00:01Ladies and gentlemen, from the Tumas Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, this is Showbox, the new generation.
00:15And nobody gonna give you nothing for nothing, you gotta work for what you get.
00:21You gotta get them shots off. Left hook, right hand.
00:24Both hands up, both hands up, let's go.
00:27Go out there, focus on the job that has to be done.
00:31This is what it takes for a chance, this is what it takes, right here, baby.
00:35Opportunity only nothing once, let's go.
00:53Tonight on Showbox, the new generation.
00:56Last day of November, the final Showbox of 2007.
01:00Live from the Tumas Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California.
01:06Get ready for a boxing doubleheader here on Showtime.
01:12Hi, everybody. I'm Nick Charles.
01:14Welcome to Showbox.
01:16On a night all four fighters on the card make return appearances to our show.
01:20We've got an intriguing main event between two junior middleweights coming off sizzling wins here on Showbox.
01:27Unbeaten James Kirkland never looked sharper in a two-round demolition of a durable opponent.
01:33Alan Conyers gave us five minutes of fury and knocked out a previously unbeaten prospect in the biggest win of
01:41his career.
01:42So what we have tonight are two guys riding a wave of momentum, and now they meet.
01:48Let's bring in my broadcast partner and pal Steve Farhood for more on this main event matchup.
01:53Steve, we all know very well how exciting James Kirkland is.
01:57Alan Conyers, though, calls him an overhyped, one-dimensional fighter.
02:01What do you say?
02:02Nick, Alan Conyers claims you and me for overhyping James Kirkland.
02:06Alan, sorry, I'm not buying it.
02:08James Kirkland, simply put, is the most exciting prospect we've had on Showbox all this year.
02:14What he isn't yet is a contender because he hasn't fought a top-20 opponent.
02:18What he is is a very angry young man who treats his opponent like the guy just stole his meal
02:23money.
02:24Is James Kirkland one-dimensional?
02:26Perhaps, but what a dimension.
02:30James Kirkland is an in-your-face junior middleweight
02:33whose smoldering intensity sets him apart from almost all other prospects.
02:37In 20 fights, no one's really tested Kirkland.
02:40Sometimes I think his toughest opponent is himself,
02:43whether because he's struggled to make weight,
02:45or because he's unhappy with the conditions of his training,
02:47or because he's impatient with the rate at which he's being moved.
02:51Kirkland's 23. He still has a long way to go.
02:53But it might be a good idea to try and get him to where he's headed sooner rather than later.
02:59No one's ever rushed Alan Conyers, who's 31 years old,
03:03had only 11 amateur fights, and has had only 13 fights in six years as a pro.
03:08Here's what best tells the story of Conyers' career to date.
03:11He scored a brilliant KO on Showbox nine months ago and hasn't fought since.
03:16Conyers can punch, and if confidence is worth some points, he's already ahead on the cards.
03:20Alan Conyers has crushed every lefty he's faced and done so quickly.
03:24Let's see what he does tonight with James Kirkland.
03:28Two junior middleweights, each with a KO mentality clash,
03:32when James Kirkland meets Alan Conyers in our main event later in the hour.
03:38Our leadoff bout tonight is another matchup between aggressive junior middleweights,
03:43unbeaten Alfredo Angulo and Archak Termalek Setian,
03:47in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.
03:50Alfredo Angulo is a four-time Mexican national champion
03:54who fought in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
03:56He turned pro the next year and this past September
03:59took his first step up in class on Showbox
04:02against unbeaten Emmanuel Gonzalez.
04:05Angulo went right after Gonzalez.
04:08He fought aggressively but under control,
04:11selecting his shots beautifully,
04:14working head and body with both hands,
04:16and keeping the heat on.
04:18He dropped Gonzalez twice in the second round
04:22to score an impressive early stoppage.
04:2725-year-old Alfredo Angulo back on Showbox,
04:31fighting for the fifth time this year,
04:33now 10-0, 7 KOs.
04:36Steve, take us behind his numbers.
04:38Well, Angulo's a Mexican baby, Nick.
04:40He looks older than 25,
04:41and he already resembles a classy pro,
04:44but let's not forget he's fought only 30 rounds as a pro
04:46and against easy pickings.
04:48KO after KO.
04:50Angulo's on a six-fight KO streak,
04:52all coming four rounds or less,
04:54but I see a pressure fighter who wears you down
04:56much more than a one-punch knockout gun.
04:58And classy mates,
04:59maybe the reason Angulo looks so polished,
05:01he's sparred with Roy Jones, Ricky Hatton,
05:04Antonio Margarito, Fernando Vargas,
05:05and Carlos Valdemir.
05:07That's like working a fight broadcast with Nick Charles.
05:09Could be intimidating, huh?
05:11Six-foot-two-inch Archak Termalek Setian
05:14is definitely the most skilled and dangerous opponent yet for Angulo.
05:17Born in Armenia,
05:18he moved with his family to Brazil at age 12,
05:21won four national championships there.
05:23He now lives in the United States,
05:2429-year-old, turned pro in 2002,
05:27appeared on Showbox two years ago
05:29against then-undefeated prospect Sekou Powell.
05:32Archak got outboxed the first half of the fight,
05:34but he kept pressing forward,
05:36landed some solid shots,
05:38and made it competitive.
05:40Going 10 rounds for the first time,
05:43but losing a unanimous decision.
05:46Termalek Setian has lost four of his last five,
05:48but looked impressive at times
05:50in every one of those step-up and class fights.
05:53He's coming off a year layoff, though,
05:55and is 16-5 with 13 knockouts.
05:58What's behind the numbers, Steve?
05:59Oh, murderous row, Nick.
06:01Sure, Archak's lost four of his last five,
06:02but look at his comp.
06:04Jose Cruz was 31-2-2.
06:06Sergio Morris, 17-0.
06:07Giovanni Lorenzo, 19-0.
06:09And Powell was 17-0.
06:11That's a combined 84-2-2.
06:1412 months missing.
06:15Archak was busy in 05 and 06,
06:17but he hasn't fought in 12 months.
06:18He can't afford to start slowly tonight
06:20against the hard-charging Angulo.
06:22And veteran numbers.
06:24Archak's been six rounds or longer seven times,
06:26and he's been 10 once.
06:27Compare that to Angulo,
06:29who's been past four rounds only one time.
06:31Advantage, Archak.
06:33Two big punchers in our leadoff bout.
06:35Alfredo Angulo risking his perfect record.
06:38Archak, Termolek, Setian needing to win now.
06:42Let's meet them both
06:43and go up to ring announcer Jake Gutiérrez.
06:47Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,
06:49and welcome to the Chumash Casino Resort
06:51here in Santa Ynez, California,
06:54for Showbox, the new generation.
06:58Presented by Gary Shaw Productions

07:07by the California State Athletic Commission.
07:09The executive officer is Armando Garcia.
07:13This next bout, the three judges scoring
07:15will be Max DeLuca, Marty Denkin, and Lou Filippo.
07:19And our referee in charge is Dr. Lou Moret.
07:22This bout is scheduled for eight rounds
07:24in the junior middleweight division.
07:28Introducing first,
07:29he'll be fighting out of the blue corner.
07:31He entered the ring wearing the blue trunks
07:33with the red trim,
07:33and he weighed in at 152 pounds.
07:36His professional record stands at 16 victories
07:39with five defeats with 13 big wins by knockout.
07:43Originally from Yavar, Armenia,
07:46he now makes his home in Patterson, New Jersey.
07:49Ladies and gentlemen,
07:50introducing Archak Shark Attack
07:53to Milik Sivyan.
07:58And his opponent,
08:00fighting out of the red corner.
08:01He's wearing the black and silver trunks,
08:04and he weighed in at 153 and a half pounds.
08:07As a professional, he is perfect.
08:09Ten victories, no losses,
08:11seven wins by knockout.
08:13Originally from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico,
08:17he now lives in fights out of Coachella, California.
08:20Ladies and gentlemen,
08:21introducing a 2004 Mexican Olympian,
08:25here is Alfredo El Perro Andulo.
08:40Perro.
08:43Okay, gentlemen,
08:44I've given you instructions in the dressing room.
08:45Shake hands,
08:46go to your corners,
08:47and wait to bell.
08:47Good luck.
08:52Archak with the four-inch reach advantage,
08:55but it won't be an advantage at all
08:56if he, again,
08:57allows his opponent to get close
08:58and stay close.
09:00California rules in effect tonight.
09:03Most notably,
09:03referee or doctor can stop the fight.
09:06And one thing,
09:07in case of an accidental foul,
09:09they'll go to the scorecards
09:10after the start of the fourth round.
09:12That's different than ABC rules.
09:13Four rounds have to be complete.
09:14So, Dr. Lou Moret,
09:16our referee,
09:16man in the middle.
09:17We're in California.
09:19Our final showbox of the year.
09:21Two big punchers,
09:21Alfredo El Perro
09:23in the black and silver,
09:24and in the orange and blue,
09:26Archak Termolek Setian,
09:28who needs to win
09:29immediately, Steve.
09:31Otherwise,
09:32he goes from,
09:33well,
09:34fading potential prospect
09:36to opponent.
09:38He promises he'll box tonight.
09:40We've heard that before
09:41from the long-armed Archak,
09:43and let's see if he does.
09:44He's starting that way,
09:45but what happens is
09:46when he gets hit,
09:47or when he hits his opponent
09:49and hurts it,
09:50then he turns to puncher,
09:51and the fight goes inside.
09:52Yeah, you know,
09:53I mean,
09:53he knocked down
09:56Sergio Moreau
09:57with a short little left hook,
09:58but he does smother
10:00a lot of his own shots,
10:01and if he can fight long and tall
10:03like he's doing now,
10:04he can crack, Steve.
10:06He can't.
10:06With his left hooks,
10:07he's digging,
10:07coming over the top of his right.
10:09Now Angulo,
10:10and they're in his left vest.
10:11Let's see if that
10:12rumble mentality takes over.
10:14Exactly.
10:14Right now,
10:15Archak's getting much
10:15the better of it,
10:16especially with his straight right hand.
10:18Yeah,
10:19and Angulo
10:21starts to pull it out,
10:23and Tremel Xetian
10:24is down inside
10:26or at the minute mark
10:27of this round.
10:28Man,
10:29he was stunned
10:30by a swarming attack.
10:32Come on.
10:33Okay.
10:33And he still looks
10:35dazed.
10:36Here comes Angulo.
10:37Let's see if he can finish.
10:38Selecting shots.
10:40Tremendous right hand,
10:41and it's over,
10:42Dr. Louverat
10:43telling Tremel Xetian,
10:46that's enough
10:47two tremendous
10:49knockdowns
10:50inside
10:51a minute and a half
10:52of this first round,
10:53and dynamically,
10:55explosively,
10:56it's over,
10:57and Alfredo Angulo
10:58is the real thing,
10:59Steve.
11:00You know,
11:00just as I said it,
11:01that Archak
11:02was getting the better of it,
11:03it's the worst thing for him.
11:04Same thing happened
11:05with Maura,
11:06as you referred to.
11:06When Archak
11:07starts hitting his opponent,
11:08he turns puncher,
11:09he got into a firefight
11:11with Angulo,
11:12and look what happened.
11:12But to Angulo's credit,
11:14with all those losses
11:15that Archak
11:16has suffered, Nick,
11:17only Narhan Sullivan
11:18put him down,
11:18and Angulo did that tonight.
11:20Archak may be a shot
11:21fighter at this point,
11:22but great win for Angulo
11:23in only his 11th fight.
11:25Steve,
11:25some of the questions
11:26that they had about Angulo,
11:28at least the opponent's
11:29corner,
11:30Lou Fusco,
11:31specifically,
11:32is this guy
11:32was nothing special
11:33in terms of hand speed.
11:35Well,
11:35I thought,
11:35you know,
11:36when he started
11:36to trade with this guy,
11:38he was flashing
11:39adequate speed,
11:40and I liked his power.
11:42He showed us a lot more
11:43than,
11:43and I think he answered
11:44questions about
11:45how hard he hits.
11:46We heard him hit
11:46in the mids again,
11:47and man,
11:48there was a lot of pop,
11:49but there's a big difference
11:49doing that
11:50against a guy who
11:51we've seen,
11:52as you said,
11:53who could take a shot.
11:54Putting him down
11:54in the manner
11:55in which he did suggest
11:56this guy
11:57is the genuine article.
11:58Oh, no,
11:59you have to give Angulo
12:00the benefit of the doubt.
12:01Archak,
12:02a year off,
12:02I said he couldn't afford
12:03to start slowly.
12:05Ironically,
12:05he started too fast,
12:06and he was hitting Angulo
12:08with a lot of right hands.
12:09Now,
12:10in measuring this
12:11knockout win,
12:12you have to say,
12:13you know,
12:14how much of it is
12:14that Archak
12:15is a little bit shot.
12:16You can't really say
12:17that he was totally shot
12:18because he was in
12:19every one of those losses,
12:21you know,
12:21fighting back all the way.
12:22So,
12:23I give Angulo
12:24all the credit.
12:25Well,
12:25I went to war immediately.
12:26Opening bell,
12:28really nothing to feel out.
12:30Angulo,
12:31aggressive,
12:32but a guy
12:32who will box,
12:33but a stalker
12:34who closes distance well,
12:36and we look at him here,
12:37the kind of guy
12:39who wants to put the heat on.
12:41We're going to look
12:41at this entire fight
12:42again because it was
12:44so short.
12:45But in the meantime,
12:47talking about Angulo
12:48moving to 11-0,
12:49eight stoppages,
12:50and that the most dynamic here.
12:52Opening bell,
12:53watch Angulo,
12:54and watch Archak
12:55trying to create
12:56that kind of a distance,
12:57but he's got to plant
12:58and discourage
13:00the rushes of Angulo.
13:01So he's a puncher,
13:02and Lou Fusco,
13:03his manager said,
13:04or his trainer said,
13:05he's got to set and punch,
13:06and he's starting to do it now,
13:08but the jab is working,
13:09he's controlling distance
13:11and range,
13:12and now we'll see him
13:14get into a war
13:15rather quickly.
13:16Angulo trying
13:17to close distance,
13:18Steve.
13:19Well,
13:20if Angulo has a weakness,
13:21Nick,
13:22he's a little slow-footed
13:23and a little slow-handed,
13:24and Archak found himself
13:25quicker,
13:26and that's why
13:27he was able to land
13:28those right hands.
13:28You see a right hand there,
13:30another right hand there,
13:31and now he thinks
13:32he's got his man hurt,
13:33so he's coming forward,
13:34but worse thing
13:35could have happened to him.
13:36Yeah,
13:36and Gulo drops his left hand,
13:37too,
13:38so he was getting hit
13:39with those right hands,
13:40and now with a boatload
13:41of confidence,
13:43Termolek Setian
13:43wants to duke it out with him,
13:45so he stands and slugs,
13:46backs against the rope,
13:48and now he is getting hit flush,
13:50and there comes the bombs,
13:51and here comes the first fall.
13:52Yeah,
13:52it was three left hooks
13:53and three right hands
13:54by Angulo,
13:55and just like that,
13:56boom,
13:56Archak,
13:57his legs are gone already,
13:57you can see that.
13:59And you can just see,
14:00as we said,
14:00still dazed here,
14:02Dr. Lou Morant asking,
14:03walk to me,
14:04are you okay,
14:04and here we go.
14:06It's a minute 15
14:07into this fight,
14:08and that pulverizing right hand,
14:10that was a hammer.
14:12Wow,
14:13you know,
14:13we're going to see
14:14James Kirkland,
14:14same division as Angulo
14:16in our main event,
14:17and Kirkland's further along
14:18than Angulo,
14:19but you know,
14:19Angulo fighting Archak,
14:20Nick,
14:21in his 11th pro fight,
14:22that's an impressive win,
14:24four losses in Archak's
14:26last five fights or not.
14:27A bombardment here tonight
14:29to get Showbox started.
14:31Inside,
14:31around,
14:32Alfredo Angulo
14:33turns the lights out
14:35on Archak Termalek Setien.
14:37Let's make it official now
14:38with Jake Gutierrez.
14:42Ladies and gentlemen,
14:43referee Dr. Lou Morant
14:44stops this contest
14:45at one minute,
14:4619 seconds
14:47of the first round.
14:48The winner,
14:49by a knockout victory,
14:51he is still undefeated,
14:54Alfredo El Perro,
14:57Angulo!
15:05Well,
15:05I'll tell you,
15:06if I'm the crowd,
15:06I would be on my feet
15:08for that.
15:08They're a little subdued.
15:09That was a tremendous
15:12power display.
15:13And here we're going to see
15:14the first knockdown.
15:16Best part of this fight
15:17for me was I didn't have
15:17to say Archak's last name
15:18once in the whole fight.
15:20And they're going at it even.
15:21No problem there.
15:22If anything,
15:23Archak's out fighting Angulo.
15:24But it turns on a left hook.
15:26Watch it.
15:26Right there.
15:28And the bad thing for Archak,
15:30he was against the ropes.
15:31He was a little square,
15:32giving a little bit too much room,
15:34punching room,
15:35to Angulo.
15:37Wow.
15:38I mean, you know,
15:38I would have made Angulo
15:39the favorite in this fight,
15:40but no way would I have thought
15:41he would take Archak out.
15:43Here's the first knockdown again.
15:45Archak already dipping.
15:46He's square.
15:47He's got no defense,
15:48no head movement.
15:50Nice straight shots from Angulo.
15:52And that's one of the reasons
15:52we say that this 25-year-old
15:54former Olympian
15:55is a very classy fighter.
15:56He throws punches
15:57technically sound.
16:00And now the end of the fight.
16:02Oh, he got full extension
16:03on that right hand
16:04following the left hook.
16:07And the amazing thing
16:08about Archak,
16:09he's always been a tough guy.
16:10Look at him complaining
16:11to Dr. Lou Moret.
16:12Once again,
16:15left hook, right hand.
16:18Absolutely brutal.
16:20And Archak,
16:21who's clearly beaten,
16:23complaining to the referee
16:25as Moret waved it off.
16:28Wisely waved it off.
16:30Alfredo Angulo,
16:31take it to him,
16:32back him up,
16:33in your face.
16:35And he did the job
16:37beautifully here tonight
16:39to move to 11-0
16:41with eight K-O's.
16:48Coming up next,
16:50James Kirkland
16:51wants to rock your world
16:53with every punch.
16:54Alan Conyers,
16:55ready to expose
16:56an opponent he thinks
16:57is more hype than danger.
16:59Kirkland meets Conyers

17:02or less.
17:07We've got a good weekend
17:08of boxing on Showtime.
17:09Tomorrow night,
17:10Showtime Championship Boxing
17:11presents a triple header
17:13from Connecticut.
17:14Here's more on a fight card
17:15featuring some of the most
17:17prominent names and punchers
17:18in the game.
17:19Nonito Donair,
17:20Vernon Forrest,
17:22and Antonio Tarver.
17:26Do you have any questions?
17:28I've got a question.
17:29You got any excuses tonight, Roy?
17:36For the past decade,
17:37Antonio Tarver
17:38has been one of
17:39boxing's most charismatic
17:40and colorful characters.
17:42Get in the house, baby!
17:43He was the first to stop
17:44Roy Jones Jr.
17:48And tomorrow night,
17:50this former unified champion
17:51continues his comeback
17:52and his march towards
17:54a world title.
17:55I don't think the boxing world
17:56has seen the best of Antonio Tarver,
17:58believe it or not.
17:59And that's what my goal is,
18:00to demonstrate that.
18:04After almost a year
18:05out of the ring,
18:06former megastar
18:07Vernon Forrest
18:08revitalized his career,
18:09beating Carlos Baldemir
18:11for the WBC light middleweight title.
18:13Tomorrow night,
18:14he defends that title
18:15against former champion
18:16Michelle Piccarillo.
18:18At the end of the day,
18:18I want to be considered
18:19one of the best
18:20that ever did it.
18:21And so that's the
18:22overriding motivation
18:23to keep me going.
18:25Also on tomorrow night's card,
18:26the star of the upset
18:27of the year,
18:28Nonito Donair.
18:29A spectacular,
18:30dramatic one-punch knockdown.
18:32With one punch,
18:34this former Showbox contender
18:35stunned the boxing community,
18:37leveling the seemingly
18:38invincible Vic Darchinian.
18:45A three-fight card
18:46tomorrow night,
18:47beginning at nine,
18:48to close out
