00:00:01Well, postponements have jeopardized Holyfield Tyson fights over the years to the point where many of us wondered if we'd
00:00:06ever really be here tonight.
00:00:08It all goes back to their ill-fated 1991 fight.
00:00:11So when Tyson announced he'd suffered a cut over his left eye in sparring to postpone the original May 3rd
00:00:16rematch date,
00:00:16many said, uh-oh, we may never see these guys fight again.
00:00:20But despite the history of postponements, there has always been a feeling of inevitability,
00:00:25an aura of fate that finally brought them together and now brings them together again, maybe for the last time,
00:00:32maybe not.
00:00:34We bring back the fight, Doctor. What's at stake here for Tyson, aside from the obvious heavyweight title?
00:00:38I think the rest of his life is at stake. If he loses here, he loses that edge of being
00:00:43a great fighter or the possibility of joining the great heavyweights
00:00:46and becomes just another one of those heavyweights that didn't quite arrive at greatness.
00:00:50And, of course, for him, he has no other recourse but to fight.
00:00:54So it's an extremely important fight for his lifestyle, for his mental condition, and what he's going to do.
00:00:59As far as Evander Holyfield's concerned, his is already done. He's already up there.
00:01:04And if he wins again, he secures his place. And if he doesn't, he's still a great champion.
00:01:08But more so, he has faith, he has other business interests, and he has a life.
00:01:13He has a life to go to. Tyson does not. Tyson must win.
00:01:17And, Bobby Chez, what changes does Tyson have to make to get his redemption?
00:01:22And does Holyfield even have to make any changes after his successful game plan of the first fight?
00:01:26Well, Holyfield certainly does not have to make too many changes.
00:01:29He sat inside the eye of the storm where he needed to.
00:01:31Got inside Mike's big stuff, made him pay on the inside, punished him.
00:01:34On the wind, he used a jab. He counter-clock fires, walked him around the ring, tying up his left
00:01:38hand, pushing away from his strength.
00:01:40He did all the right things. He rolled with punches. He countered back. He made Mike get tired.
00:01:44Now, on the other side of that coin, Mike has a lot of adjustments to make.
00:01:47He's got to get back to a double-triple jab behind the bobbing of the head.
00:01:50He stopped moving his head and became a stationary target for Evander Holyfield.
00:01:54And he's got to work the body and come up with combinations.
00:01:56No more one haymaker at a time looking for the home run shot. It just won't work this time.
00:02:00Bobby, is Tyson capable of making changes at this point of his career?
00:02:04Well, he's already made some changes. He changed Jay Bright. He brought in Rich Giacchetti.
00:02:08They have a relationship. They have a history. He's making the changes. He has a different corner.
00:02:12I'm sure he's made the adjustments in training. He's at the lightest weight he's been in 10 years.
00:02:16I'll tell you what, he's good.
00:02:17How about leading us into some key highlights?
00:02:19Okay, we'll take a look at some of the things from the first fight, some of the key points.
00:02:23What you're looking at here. Watch Evander Holyfield grab Mike Tyson and walk him around.
00:02:29He ties him up. He grabs that arm. He walks him counterclockwise.
00:02:32He doesn't allow Mike to stop, plant his feet, and use that left hook and bang him on the inside.
00:02:37And he pushes him back. Mike Tyson cannot fight going backwards.
00:02:40This is what Evander did all night long. Mike got inside, tied up that left hand.
00:02:44Mike's big bomb, big weapon, and walked him around.
00:02:47Now, he also countered back. Watch him roll his head as he...
00:02:52And he fires back. Mike's gonna throw a right hand. He'll roll with it.
00:02:56Fire right back. Bang. Roll with the shot. Fire back. Counter.
00:02:59Make Mike pay. He did that every time. Each and every time.
00:03:03Now, you watch here. When he doesn't tie Mike up, look, both hands are staying up in a clinch.
00:03:07Mike, his hands are free. He doesn't push Mike back.
00:03:11He digs to the body, and he digs with the uppercut.
00:03:13That hurt, Evander. That's probably the most that was hurt in that entire fight.
00:03:16He can't allow that, but that's what Mike has to do.
00:03:18All right. Some final thoughts before the ring walks.
00:03:21Going into the first fight, almost everybody expected so little.
00:03:25Remember how we thought, hey, maybe Holyfield will at least be game.
00:03:28Maybe he'll last a few rounds before Tyson rips him apart.
00:03:31But then round by stirring round, Holyfield took Tyson apart.
00:03:34He exposed a one-dimensional attack.
00:03:37Not only did most of the so-called experts underestimate Holyfield, but so did Tyson.
00:03:41He underestimated Holyfield's strength, chin, boxing ability, courage, and will to win.
00:03:46Tyson admittedly tried to obliterate Holyfield quickly, anticipating the home run punch as his saving grace.
00:03:52But Holyfield's heroics made many of you want to believe again, just like he believed.
00:03:56He showed how powerful the human spirit can be.
00:03:59Yes, for countless people, it was the feel-good event of the year.
00:04:03But now, going into the second fight, nobody really knows what to expect.
00:04:08We're entering the great unknown.
00:04:09But while the first fight was famous for its shocking upset, one thing is known.
00:04:13The rematch could produce the greatest heavyweight of his generation.
00:04:18How does history figure in?
00:04:20It's Holyfield's third rematch.
00:04:21He made it two straight over Alex Stewart within four years.
00:04:24After losing the undisputed world heavyweight belt to Riddick Bowe,
00:04:27he regained the WBA IVF titles from Bowe,
00:04:29but then lost to Bowe again at their third meeting at an untitled bout.
00:04:33Meanwhile, seven years separated.
00:04:35Tyson's first fight and rematch victories over Frank Bruno, the latter for the WBC crown.
00:04:40But it took only three months for Tyson to win back-to-back fights with Razor Ruddock.
00:04:44Overall, in 24 World Heavyweight Championship rematches,
00:04:47the champion has won 17 times.
00:04:49The challenger's sixth one draw.
00:04:51History dramatically on the side of Holyfield.
00:04:57We're awaiting the ring walk of Mike Tyson.
00:05:00There is the door to his dressing room.
00:05:04He'll be in the uncharacteristic position as challenger, coming in first.
00:05:08First, the former undisputed heavyweight champion
00:05:10and the youngest champion in heavyweight history.
00:05:14Bobby Chez, should we look to the first round as being critical for telltale signs?
00:05:20I think the first round's going to be critical for a lot of things.
00:05:23If Evander Holyfield can establish the jab and push Mike back once again,
00:05:26we may have a rerun.
00:05:27If Mike starts being effective to the body, throwing combination
00:05:30and wearing down Holyfield in the early going, we will look at revenge.
00:05:34Ferdy, do you think Tyson's going to come out in furious fashion?
00:05:36I do. I think he's got the one-punch knockout,
00:05:39whereas Evander has to wear you out, so he's looking to get out of there fast.
00:05:43Right now, getting out of the dressing room is the main thing,
00:05:45whether he was going to play the game or not, and he's not.
00:05:47He's coming out, so he's not going to play that sight game.
00:05:50Led by Richie Dricetti, his returning trainer.
00:05:53Here comes Mike Tyson, and the crowd erupts here in the arena.
00:05:57He's trying to win the heavyweight title for a third time
00:05:59and to emulate Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield.
00:06:03As usual, no robe, just the cut-out towel, no socks.
00:06:11But a mystique, a cloak of invincibility that is tenuous
00:06:16predicts, in his words, a sensational victory,
00:06:18looking for the early knockout,
00:06:20but says if a decision comes, he'll take that too.
00:06:28Tyson said he can't conceive of himself losing,
00:06:32but in contradiction, he also says there is some doubt.
00:06:36They reported cut over the left eye,
00:06:38sustained in training, which postponed the original May 3rd date,
00:06:41said to be of no consequence now.
00:06:45He claims he's 100% ready physically and mentally,
00:06:48saying, quote, if Holyfield wins, he'll beat me at my best.
00:06:55Bobby, do you think Tyson will resort to roughhouse tactics?
00:06:58You know, I think on the inside, he will try some roughhouse tactics.
00:07:01That's what he's supposed to do.
00:07:02Put some hurt on Fandaholio, wear him down.
00:07:05He has what appears to be a stronger body.
00:07:07Wear it down Fandaholio.
00:07:08The old man who will come, look back, I can't blow.
00:07:12Watch, look, look at how many children are.
00:07:15And what you need to be done.
00:07:17Oh, you have told me to be true.
00:07:22Niggas know what you can ruffle over,
00:07:24the weed thrower.
00:07:25Have you seen others like LOWER,
00:07:27the rhyme flowa?
00:07:28B-I-G.
00:07:28Hotalar with the clock, check your pockets,
00:07:31and your sockets.
00:07:32Just run my pockets,
00:07:33talk to what they're doing,
00:07:34drop check them thoroughly.
00:07:35The bastard Mike's been around and tried to bury me and death me
00:07:38Just don't make no moves
00:07:39When I'm slingin' in the hood, I don't think no moves
00:07:42I reminiscing on my swingin' days
00:07:44When I drove a catty at my big sporting finger
00:07:46Here comes Mike Tyson
00:07:55The reaction is mixed, but mostly applause and cheering
00:08:06The question is, in many minds, what will happen to Mike Tyson the first time he gets hit?
00:08:14Well, you know, many times fighters do revert back to what comes natural today
00:08:17Rolling and banging
00:08:18But let's remember something
00:08:19If they're rolling and banging and they're getting that kind of bite
00:08:21I think it's advantageous to Mike Tyson
00:08:24If Evander can revert to that type of bite himself
00:08:27I think one of the things we haven't covered is this eye cut
00:08:31As a fight doctor, I can tell you
00:08:33It is no problem at all
00:08:34Had plenty of time to heal
00:08:36If it's cut again, it's just an accident
00:08:38Because that is not a factor in this fight
00:08:41Yes, I mentioned
00:08:42They say it's no consequence
00:08:45We're standing by for the champion
00:08:49And here he is
00:08:50Evander Holyfield
00:08:53And the crescendo from the sellout crowd build
00:09:06His demeanor
00:09:08The same
00:09:08You know what?
00:09:09He's confident
00:09:10He's very religious
00:09:11He's sold
00:09:11He knows he did what he had to do
00:09:13There's nothing left in his mind that he has to do
00:09:20I said, ah, I said, you're ready
00:09:22Put your hands together
00:09:23Come on
00:09:24Through the spirit of the Lord
00:09:27Cause upon my heart
00:09:29I will dance
00:09:30I gave it his
00:09:32Through the spirit of the Lord
00:09:35I will dance
00:09:39I will dance
00:09:43I will dance
00:09:54I will dance
00:10:01I will dance
00:10:03I will dance
00:10:05I will dance
00:10:05I will dance
00:10:05I will dance
00:10:05Like David James
00:10:07The spirit of the Lord
00:10:09Comes upon my heart
00:10:11I will pray
00:10:12Like David pray
00:10:15When the spirit of the Lord
00:10:17Comes upon my heart
00:10:20I will pray
00:10:21Like the death ray
00:10:45This crowd explodes.
00:10:49No matter what happens tonight, Holyfield's name is secure in boxing history for what
00:10:54he did in the first meeting.
00:10:57Now he tries to punctuate it.
00:11:04Both principals are in the ring.
00:11:05Let's run down the figures as we go to the table of tape, brought to you by The Ring
00:11:09Magazine, The Bible of Boxing.
00:11:12As you can see, Holyfield older, taller, with a big reach advantage.
00:11:18Tyson turns 31 in a couple of days.
00:11:21Holyfield three pounds over the first fight, his highest weight.
00:11:25Tyson four pounds less than the first meeting, both well sculpted.
00:11:29WBA rules for this title fight.
00:11:31The key rules, no standing eight count, free knockdown rule is in effect.
00:11:35Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:11:38A fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round.
00:11:41If an accidental foul occurs before the end of the fourth round, the fight is declared
00:11:44a technical draw.
00:11:45If it happens after the end of the fourth, they go to the cards.

00:19:35Right
00:19:36Any questions from the champion? Chief second
00:19:39Let's get it on
00:19:40Let's get it on
00:19:46The waiting is over
00:19:49The talking is done
00:19:51The rematch is here
00:19:53Evander Holyfield
00:19:55Confident, relaxed, cool
00:19:57He says he doesn't look for the Tyson he fought November 9th
00:20:02He thinks Tyson will be more aggressive
00:20:04Which he feels plays into his hands
00:20:06Mike Tyson predicting a sensational victory
00:20:11The sense of anticipation as before the first fight is almost palpable
00:20:15Here we go, fight two, round one
00:20:19A straight right by Mike Tyson
00:20:22Shrugged off by Evander Holyfield
00:20:24Mike came in with the same thing on one-two looking to go over the jab
00:20:27And a lot of movement
00:20:28All right
00:20:29By Tyson, which we did not see in the first fight
00:20:34Now, Ducati said he's gonna be bobbing, weaving
00:20:36He's gonna be jabbing
00:20:37Well, he certainly started out jabbing
00:20:39And then throwing right afterwards
00:20:41So, let's see if we see improvement
00:20:42In the offense of Mike Tyson
00:20:45I think you can sense the amount of respect here too by both fighters
00:20:49And some wrestling tactics as they come together
00:20:54Look at the look on Tyson's face
00:20:56As he goes eye to eye with Holyfield
00:20:58Mills Lane
00:21:03A wild swing and a mesh with an overhand right by Tyson
00:21:08That's interesting to see who's gonna push who back
00:21:10Ducati said, I'm gonna let this guy get pushed back
00:21:14Branched off the side of Holyfield's head
00:21:16And overhand right by Tyson
00:21:20You know what Mike's doing?
00:21:21Mike's looking to duck and keep his leverage low
00:21:22And come up banging
00:21:23I notice he doesn't want to go backwards
00:21:26And Evander right now is picking his spots
00:21:29But he's looking for something
00:21:31Mills Lane jumping in there
00:21:33Trying not to have Holyfield punch and grab
00:21:38But Holyfield's coming in low
00:21:40That last time he was standing straight up
00:21:42Now when he rushes in, he's rushing in low
00:21:44So you can't just grab him
00:21:45See that little waltz?
00:21:46Now he went backwards
00:21:47Evander Holyfield went backwards
00:21:51And the first fighter was Tyson going backwards
00:21:53And he can't fight that way
00:21:57Good coach by Evander Holyfield
00:22:00Holyfield
00:22:01Measuring Tyson out now with the left jab
00:22:03Looking to set up the right
00:22:04There it is
00:22:05Way on the top of the right
00:22:06David Holyfield's trying to play that strategy too, Steve
00:22:08He's trying to push Mike back
00:22:10Starting it right now
00:22:11Setting the tone
00:22:12Step back, come on
00:22:13Step back
00:22:14Come on here
00:22:16Under a minute remaining in the opening round
00:22:22Right there, where Mike goes to come in
00:22:23Evander ties him up
00:22:24Mike cannot allow it
00:22:25He's gotta have some punches
00:22:26Being on the way
00:22:27They have to be en route
00:22:28Before he gets that close
00:22:34Oh, Tyson to the head
00:22:36Evander Holyfield
00:22:37Back comes Tyson with the left hook
00:22:38To the head of Holyfield
00:22:39He hurt Mike really good with that right hand
00:22:41I tell you what though
00:22:42Mike hit him back with the left hook
00:22:43This is gonna be a war
00:22:47What a first round
00:22:48He was in trouble there
00:22:50He shook
00:22:50Tyson
00:22:51He shook him
00:22:53Why won't you go
00:22:54Where's he going
00:22:55I'm going
00:22:56Straight left
00:22:57By Holyfield
00:23:06The chance that Holyfield stopped early
00:23:08He started in the sixth round
00:23:10Of the first
00:23:21Holyfield
00:23:39Okay, stay with the jab, stay with the jab, see when you're stiff jabbing, I want you
00:23:44now jab for the throat, jab him for the throat, you're moving good, keep off the center, keep
00:23:49moving and punch, you got to punch, now wait on him, let's take a look at how Tyson got
00:23:54in trouble, whang, they went that punch, that wasn't the one that got him in trouble, that
00:23:58wasn't the clear, clear punch that got him in trouble, there's a punch to the side, it's
00:24:04not much, and again, the struggle, let's look at it again, Bobby, you'll see a right hand
00:24:09a little later in the round, there's the right hand, that's the one that got him in trouble,
00:24:11right in the button, he got Mike on his heels, got him on his heels, Mike's not going forward.
00:24:15Bad intentions on the punches from both fighters in round one, from the very first second.
00:24:21Evander Holyfield makes his point in the first round.
00:24:24Yeah, and he looks much more confident in the way he punches, he almost has a confidence,
00:24:28I'm going to hit this guy when I want to, and then it's going to hurt him.
00:24:30I wonder what that did to Tyson's confidence.
00:24:33Holyfield picking up where he left off with the crowd behind him, 220 at his best combination.
00:24:43Again, more head movement from Tyson, something we didn't see in the first fight.
00:24:48He looks over to Bill's lane, it's a cut around the right eye of Mike Tyson from a clash of
00:24:53heads,
00:24:53I believe.
00:24:54That's just what happened, and Mike said, what about this buddy, what about this head?
00:24:58That's a butt!
00:25:01Deja vu!
00:25:02The cut's a butt!
00:25:03Here we go, tie him in, let's go!
00:25:06Look at the blood streaking down from the outer portions of the right eye of Tyson.
00:25:12What a terrible thing, and what an anticlimactic way to have this fight unfold.
00:25:21Well, it should spur Tyson to big effort.
00:25:24It's the same eye that was cut while he was sparring that postponed the rematch date of May 3rd,
00:25:30but we're not sure if it's the exact same cut that reopened.
00:25:37Well, one thing is different.
00:25:38He has now got pressure on him, and he's just started this fight.
00:25:42And again, just like in the first fight, Tyson looks over for help from the referee.
00:25:46I think he was complaining about a low blow there.
00:25:48I didn't see a blow go south of the border, but that's what he's complaining about, I think.
00:25:52And there's Amanda Holyfield mauling and pushing him around to the ropes.
00:25:59If an accidental foul occurs before the end of the 4th round, the fighters rule the technical draw.
00:26:05After the end of the 4th, they go to the car.
00:26:09Holyfield digging in with uppercuts to the body, now going upstairs, looking for the cut.
00:26:15Evander is beating Mike to the punch, and he's making Mike pay.
00:26:18When Mike comes in, he smothers his shot, and he counters well, and Mike doesn't counter the counter.
00:26:24What Mike is doing, though, is at least he's crouching down a lot more than he did before,
00:26:29and those punches are going over where they were landing last time.
00:26:33And that cut over the right eye is fairly deep.
00:26:37He just got a pretty good glance at it.
00:26:40Pushing it into the ropes by Holyfield.
00:26:44Holyfield showing he's stronger.
00:26:45Again, he's pushing him around like a ragdoll.
00:26:48Well, that's not good.
00:26:49Hey, hey, hey, hey, come here.
00:26:51You know better than that.
00:26:52All right?
00:26:53Let's go.
00:26:54Come on.
00:26:57Mills Lane taking charge.
00:27:01Over the top.
00:27:02Mike throwing a nice right hand, but you see he's not following up with the big combination.
00:27:05It's got to be 2-3.
00:27:06It can't be one at a time, Steve.
00:27:07That's not the way to get this one done.
00:27:09And Tyson really beginning to look frustrated now.
00:27:14As they continue to dance around, holding on to one another.
00:27:20That one punch at a time, Bobby, referred to just happened right then again.
00:27:23If he doesn't do better than that, this is going to be the same thing as the last time.
00:27:27Don't forget Tyson with a plastic surgeon in his quarter.
00:27:34He's going to need it.
00:27:41No problem, Mike.
00:27:45Nothing.
00:27:48Okay, it's nothing.
00:27:48A couple deep breaths.
00:27:50I'm sorry.
00:27:50A couple deep breaths.
00:27:51You're fine, Mike.
00:27:53Yes, he is.
00:27:54I know.
00:27:55All right, set him down.
00:27:56Okay, you're fine, Mike.
00:27:57No problem.
00:27:58Got to do.
00:27:59That's what you want to know.
00:28:02I need a towel.
00:28:03Give me a towel, guys.
00:28:05All right, let me take a look underneath, Mike.
00:28:07Give me a look.
00:28:08All right, can I hold pressure on it longer?
00:28:10You see Evander coming in, and the head just winds up slamming into Mike's eye.
00:28:15And unfortunately, it's a cut already.
00:28:18Wasn't a big deal, but I'm sure he didn't meet it.
00:28:19But his head was down.
00:28:22Another look at Evander just kind of dives.
00:28:23There it is.
00:28:24Right there.
00:28:25Puts his head down and comes straight in.
00:28:26And hits Mike right in the corner of his right eye.
00:28:29Bad luck.
00:28:30Dr. Ira Trocky telling Tyson he's fine, but that may be wishful thinking.
00:28:36But before the bell for round three, Tyson comes out fast, but forgot his mouthpiece.
00:28:42He's anxious to get this on.
00:28:43I think he's blown the first two rounds, and he better get started.
00:28:47Round two, very bad for Tyson with that bad cut.
00:28:50Pushed away by Holyfield.
00:28:53Again, showing his strength.
00:28:54A sense of urgency here by Tyson.
00:28:58And that's the old Tyson we know.
00:29:00That's the Mike Tyson that came.
00:29:01That's the Mike Tyson that needed to come.
00:29:03A ferocious Mike Tyson.
00:29:06Bobbing and leaving.
00:29:08If he can keep that up for the whole round, he can even this thing out as far as intentions.
00:29:14He's got to show he's got it.
00:29:16He's got to bring it.
00:29:17He has to reverse what's going on here.
00:29:19Momentum still with Evander.
00:29:21And the crowd really picking up now.
00:29:24Let him go, Mike.
00:29:27Come on.
00:29:30A frantic pace.
00:29:36Listen.
00:29:39The crowd is turning.
00:29:42Benny Elling Tyson.
00:29:45A swing and a miss with a straight right by Holyfield.
00:29:48Good duck under move by Tyson.
00:29:51But Tyson's still throwing more right hands than he's normally used to doing over the top.
00:29:55He has seen something in the tapes.
00:29:56Not effective yet, but he is working on it.
00:29:58Will we see his lethal left hook suit?
00:30:01Mike Tyson.
00:30:03A lot of wrestling early in round three.
00:30:07Nice right hand by Mike.
00:30:09He is trying to get that right hand home.
00:30:11They seemingly are relying on one big shot.
00:30:15There you see Evander put that arm around Mike's left hook arm again.
00:30:18Walking him off.
00:30:19Doesn't want to get hit with that bomb on the inside.
00:30:23Oh, a low blow by Holyfield with the left hook.
00:30:25And Bill's wing gives him an air full.
00:30:29Back comes Tyson on the belt.
00:30:32Tyson with a short left hook to the head of Holyfield.
00:30:35A right hand by Mike Tyson to the head of Holyfield.
00:30:38A straight right.
00:30:39The left hook got his attention.
00:30:40Then he came back with a nice one-two.
00:30:41A left hook and a right hand.
00:30:42And Holyfield looked like he was stunned.
00:30:43But what a chin by Holyfield.
00:30:51Good stiff jab.
00:30:52That's the jab Mike didn't have in the first fight.
00:30:59What happened here?
00:31:01He got bit, I think.
00:31:03Evander Holyfield.
00:31:04Look out.
00:31:04He's pushed right here above us by Tyson.
00:31:09He's got bit in the ear.
00:31:10Oh, my goodness.
00:31:11He's got a bloody right ear.
00:31:13Holyfield bit by a dirty Mike Tyson.
00:31:17I can't believe what I'm seeing.
00:31:19Well, first he had a parachute drop on him.
00:31:21Now he had a heavyweight binder.
00:31:24He's got a big bite.
00:31:25When do we get that untaped?
00:31:26Biting Holyfield in the right ear.
00:31:29What a reaction.
00:31:30Well, and he certainly hurts like hell,
00:31:32but he certainly had a big bite.
00:31:33And that's a dangerous bite.
00:31:39Oh, disgusting tactics here by Mike Tyson.
00:31:43He did it.
00:31:44He did it.
00:31:46Hey, he did it.
00:31:48He did it like that mail.
00:31:51He did it, he did it.
00:31:52He did it, he did it, he did it, he did it.
00:31:55We understand one point has been deducted from Tyson
00:31:58for that vicious exhibition.
00:32:03Now, they could disqualify him,
00:32:05but they've taken a point, that's for sure.
00:32:08Oh, here comes the commissioner now.
00:32:10They've got to figure it out.
00:32:12Well, this is the doctor and the commissioner
00:32:13who both take a look at.
00:32:15He bit his ear.
00:32:16He's out.
00:32:17He disqualified.
00:32:18He bit his ear.
00:32:19I can see the bite mark.
00:32:20He bit his ear.
00:32:21He's out.
00:32:21Telling Mark Bratner, head of the commissioner.
00:32:23Well, let me ask the doctor.
00:32:24He bit his ear.
00:32:25Can you, can he go on?
00:32:26Yes.
00:32:27Okay.
00:32:29It's going to be a two-point deduction.
00:32:30The fight will go on.
00:32:32Two-point.
00:32:34Mills Lane was ready to stop the fight for Holyfield.
00:32:37The fight will go on.
00:32:39Overruled by Flip Hzymanski, the doctor, who said...
00:32:42Mills Lane is a take-charge kind of guy.
00:32:44He's a judge.
00:32:45He'll take no nonsense.
00:32:46He's bullshit.
00:32:47It's going to cost him two points.
00:32:48Two points.
00:32:50Two points off here.
00:32:52He bit his ear.
00:32:53Two points off.
00:32:55Two.
00:32:55Can you believe this?
00:32:57Two points.
00:32:57This is getting stranger and stranger.
00:33:00We're getting to see strange things happen in boxing.
00:33:02Two points.
00:33:02We've been Spotify today.
00:33:04We're in the stir.
00:33:04We're going to have anything to do like that.
00:33:08We go back to the change of referees.
00:33:10I wonder how this would have played in the chopper's eyes.
00:33:13Oh, my goodness.
00:33:15That's a thought, Bobby.
00:33:18You've got a big, tough judge here.
00:33:22Major controversy here in round three.
00:33:28A very angry Evander Holyfield now.
00:33:32A left putt.
00:33:34You know what's funny?
00:33:35Mike was having his best round.
00:33:36He bit him again.
00:33:37He bit him again.
00:33:39Mike Tyson has bitten Evander Holyfield for the second time.
00:33:43And he's all out for.
00:33:48I saw that one.
00:33:49That was right clear.
00:33:50It's a miracle he didn't get bit back.
00:33:53I'll tell you what.
00:33:54This is unbelievable.
00:34:14Let's take two looks at that one.
00:34:15At that bike.
00:34:16Now, here's the bike.
00:34:17Keep your eye on Mike.
00:34:18Mike has just seen it.
00:34:20Look at him.
00:34:20You can see it.
00:34:21You can see it.
00:34:22There it is.
00:34:24I can't believe what I'm seeing, fellas.
00:34:27Bobby, Bobby.
00:34:31They're going in real slow motion.
00:34:33Mike gets in a headlock.
00:34:36And look at this.
00:34:37He just reaches in and bites him.
00:34:40It's over.
00:34:41It's over.
00:34:43During that replay.
00:34:45That's it.
00:34:45I'm gone.
00:34:50Bill's lane signalling that it's over.
00:34:53I think they've just about had enough.
00:34:55Tyson showing desperation in fighting Holyfield two times.
00:35:00Look out now.
00:35:04More fighting in the ring after the end of the fight.
00:35:07Tyson's trying to get at Holyfield again, I believe.
00:35:10It is complete problem, and Tyson is just taking swipes at anybody in front of him.
00:35:16The police are coming in by the squad here, and they're still fighting in there.
00:35:23It's a fiasco in the ring.
00:35:24People are jumping above us.
00:35:27Trying to get in there.
00:35:28There's the security trying to hold Tyson back.
00:35:30This is the most unbelievable spectacle I have ever seen.
00:35:34The first one was an amazing feat.
00:35:36The second one is disastrous.
00:35:39It's just impossible to conceive.
00:35:42Tyson's bodyguard fighting with the security.
00:35:45The crowd in stunned disbelief here.
00:35:50I'm beginning more and more to believe Tyson is a confused individual.
00:35:54He is a mentally confused individual.
00:35:55I think it goes beyond confused, Bertie.
00:35:56I think it goes beyond confused.
00:35:58I can't understand it.
00:35:59Mike was having his best round.
00:36:01He was getting Dave Andrew.
00:36:02He hit him with some great shots.
00:36:03The right hand got through the hook.
00:36:05Don't know what happened.
00:36:08Let's take a look at the second bite.
00:36:09Now, he'd already bitten the man once.
00:36:15It's impossible to believe this happened again, but it did.
00:36:17Just keep your eyes on Mike's mouth as much as you can,
00:36:20because you will see it.
00:36:22Now, you see he's got his hand.
00:36:23He's got this right there.
00:36:25He's got his mouth.
00:36:26See it? See it?
00:36:27It's a shark bite right there.
00:36:29That is incredible.
00:36:32Look at the reaction again from Holyfield.
00:36:35He can't believe it.
00:36:35He got the second one on the other side.
00:36:37You know what?
00:36:38If I were Evander, I would have kicked him.
00:36:39I don't know what held him back.
00:36:41Look at it again.
00:36:42Watch, Mike.
00:36:43Come inside.
00:36:44This is the second bite of the round.
00:36:47Right on Evander's ear.
00:36:49It's like Dracula time.
00:36:51I've never seen anything like this in boxing.
00:36:54I can't understand it.
00:36:55I'm sure there will be suspensions and bands galore.
00:36:59What a wild scene here at the MGM Grand.
00:37:02Just a shame that it has to come to a conclusion in this fashion.
00:37:06Mike Tyson resorting to fighting tactics,
00:37:09and he still wants more as he's being held back by Richie Giacchetti.
00:37:15Just an awful display here by Tyson.
00:37:19I'm nothing short of shock, Steve.
00:37:21I am speechless.
00:37:22I have no response for what I've just witnessed.
00:37:27Mike Tyson has apparently lost his reason, his rationale.
00:37:34He seems possessed right now.
00:37:39He cannot be brought under control.
00:37:55It is just peddling above us.
00:37:58People stepping on our table,
00:38:00trying to break into the clear.
00:38:02You can see, of course, what's going on in the ring.
00:38:05Mike is still being restrained.
00:38:10Has Holyfield been ushered out of the ring?
00:38:12I can't even see him.
00:38:14Holyfield just came past, Steve.
00:38:15He is out of the ring.
00:38:16He is clear.
00:38:23Let's go over to Jim Gray.
00:38:25All right.
00:38:26Thank you very much, Steve, Albert.
00:38:29Steve, thank you very much.
00:38:30I have Mills Lane.
00:38:32Mills, why did you stop the fight?
00:38:33Because of the first fight on the air or the second?
00:38:35The second one.
00:38:36The first one was the foul.
00:38:38I took two points.
00:38:40The doctor said he could continue.
00:38:42So then it continued.
00:38:43And he beat him on the other air.
00:38:45I told him, I said, one more time like that, that's it.
00:38:48You're gone.
00:38:49I told him both.
00:38:50Knocked the rough stuff up.
00:38:51And he beat him again.
00:38:52I said, that's it.
00:38:53You're gone.
00:38:54As Holyfield leaves the ring,
00:38:55the condition of the air, could he have continued?
00:38:58And did you disqualify him because of the foul
00:39:00or because he couldn't continue?
00:39:01Oh, no.
00:39:01I disqualified taking for the second foul.
00:39:03I told him, do not do that again.
00:39:05If you do, you're gone.
00:39:06So he could have continued.
00:39:08The physical condition of Evander Holyfield was such a view
00:39:10that he could have continued had he not disqualified Tyson.
00:39:13Well, I didn't ask the doctor.
00:39:14I never reached that point.
00:39:16I wasn't going to ask the doctor.
00:39:17That wasn't a question.
00:39:19That kind of foul would be,
00:39:20you've got to take a position sometime, somewhere.
00:39:24That was it.
00:39:26Pandemonium breaking out here as Mike Tyson is leaving the ring.
00:39:29And we'll continue with Mills Lang.
00:39:31As you see, people getting knocked over.
00:39:33Our camera goes down.
00:39:34Mills, let me continue here.
00:39:36Mike Tyson's people and Tyson are going to say,
00:39:38I'm sure you didn't call a foul on the headbutt,
00:39:40which caused the eye.
00:39:41And this could have been a retaliation by Tyson.
00:39:43I called it a butt.
00:39:45But you didn't take a point.
00:39:47An unintentional butt.
00:39:48You don't take a point.
00:39:49An unintentional butt, unless it's occurred a second time.
00:39:52An unintentional butt, if he fights up,
00:39:56you go to the school cards after four rounds,
00:39:59there's a difference between an unintentional butt and a bite.
00:40:02Do you feel as though that's what Tyson was doing, however,
00:40:04that he was retaliating?
00:40:05I do not know.
00:40:06You'll have to ask him.
00:40:07I might have speculated.
00:40:08I do not know the answer to that.
00:40:10Obviously, disappointment.
00:40:11Mills got to be disappointing for you
00:40:12to have it come to a conclusion like this as well.
00:40:14You know, you play the hand you dealt
00:40:17and do the best you can with the cards.
00:40:18That's all I can tell you.
00:40:19All right, Mills Lane.
00:40:20Thank you for your time.
00:40:21Let's send it back now to Steve Albert.
00:40:27We're trying to get an interview with Evander Holyfield.
00:40:30I'd love to hear his reaction.
00:40:33Why should Holyfield even ever have to fight Tyson again
00:40:36after this terrible display by Mike Tyson?
00:40:39Steve, it's unbelievable.
00:40:42I don't believe Evander would ever sign to fight Mike again.
00:40:44I don't think there would be an issue any longer.
00:40:46It's not about the fight.
00:40:47It's just about it being real personal.
00:40:50That's beyond boxing.
00:40:56Oh, we understand now.
00:40:57Ferdy Pacheco is ready with Evander Holyfield.
00:41:01All right, Evander Holyfield.
00:41:03Two bites on each side.
00:41:04One piece is missing out of here.
00:41:06Your plastic surgeon said, your reaction?
00:41:08Well, first of all, I had to get praise to the Lord.
00:41:10You know, Jesus, Lord.
00:41:12You know, I'm still the champion.
00:41:14You still get the glory.
00:41:15And, you know, the things that happened,
00:41:17it didn't have to happen.
00:41:19You know, I was beating him.
00:41:21And, you know, he spit out of my opinion,
00:41:23bit him in the air.
00:41:24Is that the act of a crazed man?
00:41:25Because to beat you twice, I mean, to bite you twice,
00:41:27is a little crazy.
00:41:28Well, you know, the whole thing is that, you know,
00:41:30you know, in the first one, you know,
00:41:32my corner, you know, told me to just keep cool.
00:41:36And I, you know, I thought about that, you know,
00:41:39a distraction would happen.
00:41:40And his prophecy told me to, you know,
00:41:43just, you know, just breathe deep
00:41:45and just concentrate on Jesus.
00:41:47Then I went back out there again,
00:41:48and I caught him with good shots,
00:41:50and he bit my ear on purpose again.
00:41:53How can he bite your ear with a mouthpiece?
00:41:54Spit it out of the mouthpiece?
00:41:55He spit the mouthpiece out.
00:41:56He spit the mouthpiece out
00:41:58and bit me on the ear for the last time.
00:42:00You know, the whole thing is that,
00:42:01the whole thing is that, you know,
00:42:03really, the only chance that he thought he could
00:42:05is just to go, my whole thing is that,
00:42:07you know, the whole thing is my ear bleeding.
00:42:09And this guy continued to foul.
00:42:12You know, I'm thankful that we have a referee
00:42:15like Mill Lane, see the situation
00:42:17that this thing is in tension.
00:42:18And, you know, it's just, it's just a maze.
00:42:21Would this, would this rule out a rematch?
00:42:23It's stupid to ask you right now
00:42:24for a reason why I,
00:42:25because this guy went and lost his marbles.
00:42:26Is a rematch possible?
00:42:28Are you so mad you wouldn't even think about that?
00:42:29Well, you know, the whole thing is that,
00:42:30you know, I have to concentrate
00:42:31and I have to think, you know,
00:42:33have to think about the situation.
00:42:34Because the big thing is to, you know,
00:42:37a rules and regulation, mandatory things.
00:42:40But the rules, you got to understand
00:42:41when a person deliberately bites you
00:42:44constantly and trying to,
00:42:46and trying to break my arm,
00:42:47because, you know, in the corner,
00:42:49he's just doing illegal tactics.
00:42:50You know, Mill Lane said, you know, break.
00:42:52You know, the whole thing is that,
00:42:54I mean, there's just an easy way
00:42:55to get out of the fight, to foul.
00:42:56Because you know you're going to get
00:42:57disqualified still fighting through.
00:42:59I'm seeing that don't show
00:43:00no courage whatsoever.
00:43:02Everybody know how to get out of the fight.
00:43:03All you have to do is foul.
00:43:04You'll get yourself out.
00:43:05Then you can say, well, he didn't beat me.
00:43:07Would you say this is an act of a desperate man?
00:43:09Would you say he was desperate in there?
00:43:11Is that the word you think?
00:43:12To cause a guy to do something so unusual?
00:43:15Well, just the whole thing is that,
00:43:16you know, I truly believe that fear,
00:43:18fear itself calls people to do the easiest thing,
00:43:22the quickest thing to get out.
00:43:23I'm saying the whole thing is that
00:43:25we're in a fight already.
00:43:26So why do you have to bite somebody?
00:43:28If you feel that you can whoop me,
00:43:30why you can't whoop me with the gloves on?
00:43:31This is a boxing match.
00:43:33This is not a rumble.
00:43:35When the fight is over,
00:43:36then you get brave and you really want to fight.
00:43:38I'm saying, you know,
00:43:39you don't, you had a chance to fight.
00:43:40You know, why you got to bite nobody?
00:43:42The whole thing is that, you know,
00:43:44it's not real.
00:43:45You know, my whole thing is that
00:43:46I just give praise to the Lord
00:43:48that it is not worse than the other.
00:43:49I thought my ear had fell off.
00:43:50Well, your plastic surgeon here says
00:43:52a piece is missing out of your ear,
00:43:54which means you'll have to have a plastic repair.
00:43:56And either ear,
00:43:57since human bites are so dangerous,
00:43:59have to be taken care of tonight at the hospital.
00:44:01I look forward to the hospital.
00:44:03Good thing I got a doctor.
00:44:04All right.
00:44:04Good.
00:44:05I mean, remarkable.
00:44:07Let's go to Gray.
00:44:09All right.
00:44:10Thank you, Ferdy.
00:44:10We are outside of Mike Tyson's locker room.
00:44:12There is utter pandemonium going on here.
00:44:14Finally, a little bit of some quiet.
00:44:16John Horn, the co-manager of Mike Tyson,
00:44:18joins us right now.
00:44:19John, this is a scene like we have never seen before.
00:44:22It was totally out of control.
00:44:24What is the situation inside of that locker room?
00:44:26And can you ascertain why Mike bit Evander?
00:44:30Well, I'm not going to even comment on that
00:44:31until I see what really happened.
00:44:33But all I know is this.
00:44:34Evander has been headbutting Mike for two fights.
00:44:36Headbutting is a foul, a complete foul.
00:44:38But it's been happening so often, so long,
00:44:41that when a person headbutts another person,
00:44:43cuts both of their eyes, it becomes a common thing.
00:44:45And it's okay to let that go.
00:44:47Was this a retaliation?
00:44:50No.
00:44:50It turned into, Evander turned it into a street fight a long time ago.
00:44:55A long time ago.
00:44:56And I'm not going to even get off into it
00:44:57until I understand everything and see what happened.
00:44:59And all I know is Mike got a cut over his eye,
00:45:02three inches long.
00:45:03Evander got a little nip on his head that don't mean nothing.
00:45:06Mike wanted to continue.
00:45:07And after the bottom line, he jumped around like a little bitch.
00:45:09That's what he did.
00:45:11Okay, now, and Mike didn't do nothing.
00:45:12Mike didn't complain.
00:45:13He didn't say nothing.
00:45:14He didn't ask a man to stop the fight
00:45:17because headbutts been going on so long.
00:45:20It's okay.
00:45:21But it's a foul.
00:45:22You can't bite anybody regardless.
00:45:24I didn't say he bit nobody.
00:45:25I said when I look at everything,
00:45:28we'll determine.
00:45:29But it's very clear.
00:45:30Mike got a three-inch cut over his eye.
00:45:32It's not for a punch.
00:45:33Okay, so therefore, what can I say?
00:45:35One is accidental.
00:45:36No, come on, please.
00:45:38One headbutt may be accidental.
00:45:40Fifteen is nine.
00:45:41What would you have liked to have seen done by Mills Lane?
00:45:43I would like to see him let the fight go.
00:45:45The air ain't got nothing to do with his fight.
00:45:47He got a little cut on the air, man.
00:45:48The air ain't got nothing to do with the fight.
00:45:49It ain't got nothing to do with his arms, his legs, his hands, his body, nothing.
00:45:52You don't need to scream at me.
00:45:53You don't need to scream at me.
00:45:54Mike got a cut over his eye.
00:45:55Okay.
00:45:56Mike got a three-inch cut over his eye
00:45:57that the blood will penetrate to his eye,
00:46:01blur his vision, and everything.
00:46:02Now, I understand what...
00:46:04Now, Mills Lane, let me clarify for you
00:46:05since you don't know what Mills Lane has said does.
00:46:07Mills Lane said he didn't disqualify him for the first fight
00:46:10because he was willing to let that go with a two-point deduction.
00:46:13The second fight, however, at the end of the round
00:46:16is what he said he had just had enough.
00:46:18Well, I have to see everything about it first.
00:46:20I can't comment on no bite or whatever the case may be.
00:46:23All I know is Mike got a three-inch gash over his eye.
00:46:25Are you unhappy with the referee in Mills Lane?
00:46:27Not at all.
00:46:28There's nothing.
00:46:29No, no, no, not at all.
00:46:30I'm unhappy with all the headbutts and stuff for two fights.
00:46:33Mike doesn't have been cut four times by this guy,
00:46:35neither time by a punch.
00:46:37Now, you tell me what that is.
00:46:39That's all I know.
00:46:40Everything else I'm going to have to see about,
00:46:41I'm going to have to go over.
00:46:42I don't know nothing about that.
00:46:43But he turned into a street fight a long time ago.
00:46:46The tapes clearly show that I'm being told in the first fight
00:46:50that Mike caused the butts, and that was ascertained.
00:46:53In this one, it was an accidental butt, or though it appeared,
00:46:56although it appeared, what would you have liked to have seen done
00:46:59at that moment?
00:47:01It's too late after the fact to bite somebody.
00:47:03What would you have liked to have seen at that time?
00:47:04All I know is this.
00:47:06There was nothing wrong with the advantage of Holyfield
00:47:08that would have kept him from performing.
00:47:10That's all I know.
00:47:12But you're not unhappy with the referee?
00:47:14This was your referee of choice.
00:47:15No, I'm not unhappy because I don't even know the order of terms yet.
00:47:17Everything happens so quickly, I don't even know all the conditions.
00:47:20All I know is my fighter got a three-inch cut over his eye.
00:47:23Can we talk to Mike Tyson?
00:47:25No, not right now.
00:47:26Mike has a three-inch cut he has to take care of.
00:47:28Thank you very much.
00:47:28Okay, John.
00:47:29Don King, obviously not the way that anybody expected
00:47:33that this was going to go.
00:47:34Very disappointing to everybody who bought the fight
00:47:36and those in attendance here.
00:47:38Your thoughts on this disqualification?
00:47:40Well, I think that the headbutts was there,
00:47:42and I think that when he had the headbutts,
00:47:44and as he had headbutts prior to that,
00:47:46it should have been some type of a point taken away
00:47:48or something to acknowledge these headbutts
00:47:52because this was said so priorly before the fight started
00:47:55to watch the headbutts.
00:47:57You know what I mean?
00:47:57And so it's very difficult when two athletes are fighting.
00:47:59You know what I mean?
00:48:00Things can happen, but these headbutts seemingly...
00:48:02Don, but the fact of the matter is,
00:48:04is the headbutts, yes, it is a problem.
00:48:06Everybody will acknowledge that Holdenfield was in violation with the headbutts.
00:48:11The proper reaction, however, is not to bite, correct?
00:48:14Well, I don't...
00:48:15The proper reaction is not to bite.
00:48:17You know what I mean?
00:48:17But I guess when a guy feels that he's pleading with the referee
00:48:20to give him some consideration,
00:48:22and he don't get the consideration,
00:48:23then he just goes beyond reason.
00:48:26I mean, you must be able to deal with reason and practicality,
00:48:28but you've got two athletes in there,
00:48:29highly passionate, very hot, ready to fight,
00:48:33and fight they would do, and the fight was just beginning.
00:48:35I don't know why it would be stopped.
00:48:38What...
00:48:38Well, because Holdenfield, it was determined by Mills Lane.
00:48:42You...
00:48:43Well, let me stop you right there before we go on to that.
00:48:45You're saying Mills Lane should not have stopped the fight on the second bite?
00:48:47No.
00:48:48When Holyfield got bitten,
00:48:51Mills Lane said he took a point from Mike Tyson.
00:48:53Then a second point.
00:48:55And what of a second point?
00:48:56And then at the end of the round,
00:48:58Mills Lane has said that Tyson bit him on the other ear,
00:49:01which in this instance I believe would be the left ear,
00:49:04two bites on the ear.
00:49:04I didn't see it, so I can't come in on that.
00:49:06That's why he disqualified it.
00:49:07Well, I don't know.
00:49:08I'd have to see that before I make any comments.
00:49:10I don't want to be irrational.
00:49:11Okay.
00:49:12Let's move on.
00:49:12Where does this leave Mike Tyson in his career,
00:49:14and will there be a third bout between these two,
00:49:17and do you think you could ever put anything like that together?
00:49:19Well, I want to find out first the facts,
00:49:21and then after you find out the facts, you see what you can do.
00:49:24I think that when a fighter like Mike Tyson or Holdenfield
00:49:27find that they're being wrong,
00:49:29and they're not getting the consideration that they think they should have,
00:49:31then they try to take it in their own hands,
00:49:32and that's not always the right thing to do.
00:49:34But nevertheless, that's what's been done
00:49:36when you have people out there that's in this type of atmosphere and climate
00:49:40and look like they were just beginning to fight.
00:49:42Could you ever, do you feel,
00:49:44convince Holdenfield to take this fight again?
00:49:46I don't know.
00:49:47I don't know whether I can or not until we find out what all of the evidence is
00:49:50and find out what is happening, what actually happened.
00:49:53I mean, I'm just like a fan of anyone else at this particular time.
00:49:55It would be a terrible disappointment if there wasn't another, correct?
00:49:57Yeah, it certainly would be
00:49:58because these guys certainly don't prove that they're two good athletes,
00:50:01but they've got to be able to fight, and they want to fight,
00:50:03and it looked like that's what they were doing.
00:50:05I didn't know.
00:50:05I thought after the points were taken,
00:50:07that was the punishment meted out
00:50:09for whatever the error was in Mike Tyson.
00:50:13What happened after that, I don't know
00:50:15because when he sat down in the barrel ring and went to the corners,
00:50:18I thought they was coming back after the fight,
00:50:19and all of a sudden it was the DQ.
00:50:20I know you don't make this decision,
00:50:22but should these fighters be paid for this evening's work?
00:50:24There's some 60-some-odd million dollars who went out tonight.
00:50:27Out of your pocket.
00:50:28Yes, they should be paid.
00:50:29They came and they fought.
00:50:31You know what I mean?
00:50:32Boxing is unpredictable.
00:50:34You don't know what's going to happen in a boxing match.
00:50:36That's what makes it so great.
00:50:37But the fact of the matter is,
00:50:39I think we should first try to find out what happened
00:50:41before we start making judgment.
00:50:42What do you say to the folks who bought the fight
00:50:44who are terribly disappointed who are watching this right now?
00:50:46I'm disappointed myself because of the outcome.
00:50:48I want to see this fight go to the finale.
00:50:52You know what I mean?
00:50:52This was the sound and the fury.
00:50:54It was something that everybody purported
00:50:56and recognized it was going to be a great event.
00:50:58And then here comes the headbutts,
00:50:59and then here comes the retaliation for the headbutts.
00:51:02But after you've taken the points from the man,
00:51:04I just think that they should have been able to fight.
00:51:07If you get a headbutt or a low blow,
00:51:09you get five minutes to recuperate.
00:51:11I think it should have took another step to say,
00:51:13give him five minutes to recuperate or something
00:51:16to let these people get their money's worth
00:51:18and be able to deal with this fight.
00:51:19As the man in charge of this show,
00:51:21I've got to put you on the spot right here.
00:51:23What will you do in the upcoming moments
00:51:25to make sure that we have a word with Mike Tyson
00:51:26before we leave the air?
00:51:28Well, I'm going to do everything I can to talk to Mike Tyson,
00:51:30to let Mike Tyson tell his side of the story.
00:51:33I think it's only fair and proper that he should do that,
00:51:35and I would do everything I can to get him to do that.
00:51:38Also, I would like to get to talk to the commission
00:51:39and find out what their judgment is
00:51:42on a situation of this type.
00:51:44And when this has happened,
00:51:46after you take the points,
00:51:47you come back and take the fight, too.
00:51:49I don't understand it.
00:51:49So maybe they can explain it to me.
00:51:51Well, as you say, only in America,
00:51:53and only in America, Steve Albert,
00:51:54would we have seen something quite like this tonight.
00:51:56We hope to have Mike Tyson, Charlie.
00:51:58Back out to you.
00:51:59All right, Jim.
00:52:00Mike Tyson disqualified for biting both ears
00:52:03of Evander Holyfield in the third round.
00:52:04Let's just clean up some business
00:52:06before we talk here at ringside on camera.
00:52:09Coming up Sunday, July 27th,
00:52:12showtime presents a brand new original series
00:52:15that picks up where Stargate, the movie, left off.
00:52:18It's Stargate SG-1.
00:52:20When the gate opens, the adventure begins.
00:52:23Every week, a new gate, a new universe,
00:52:25a new world to explore.
00:52:28Don't miss the season premiere of Stargate SG-1.
00:52:31Unlock the universe Sunday, July 27th,
00:52:34right here on Showtime.
00:52:43Steve Albert back with the fight,
00:52:44Dr. Ferdie Pacheco and Bobby Chez.
00:52:47And I thought this was an inexcusable,
00:52:51despicable, illegal exhibition by Mike Tyson.
00:52:55What do you think, Ferdie?
00:52:57I agree wholeheartedly.
00:52:58I think when you're hearing Don King
00:53:00trying to kind of make a patch up,
00:53:01he didn't see the ears.
00:53:02I just came from examining his ears.
00:53:04One of them's got a chunk of flesh
00:53:06missing about a half inch off the crown.
00:53:09They're going to have to do plastic surgery,
00:53:10reconstruct that.
00:53:11It's out.
00:53:12It's a chunk of flesh out.
00:53:13That's not just a little bite.
00:53:15That is a wolf-like bite.
00:53:16I don't understand the second bite,
00:53:18and I understand why they disqualified him.
00:53:22I don't think anybody can make any justification
00:53:25or rationalization for something as bizarre
00:53:27as not one, but two bites.
00:53:30Something clicked inside of Mike's brain.
00:53:32We've been saying Mike Tyson's an unpredictable
00:53:34and confused young man.
00:53:36I don't think you can see any evidence
00:53:39of mental confusion and unpredictability more
00:53:42than we just saw there with a fighter
00:53:45biting another fighter in the same round two times
00:53:48than taking a chunk out of his ear.
00:53:50I think, end of the story,
00:53:52this guy is one confused individual.
00:53:54I'll open this up to the both of you,
00:53:55Ferdy and Bobby, perhaps construed
00:53:59as an extreme statement,
00:54:00but is Mike Tyson's career over?
00:54:02I don't think so, and I think his big aspiration
00:54:07to be considered one of the great heavyweights is gone.
00:54:09I don't care what he does,
00:54:10he's never going to be considered a great heavyweight.
00:54:12That he can fight and continue, yes.
00:54:14Okay, let's see if we can get Tyson.
00:54:16You're hearing what I'm hearing.
00:54:17We've got Mike Tyson available for an interview right now.
00:54:19Let's go back over to Jim Gray.
00:54:22All right, thank you, Steve.
00:54:24I'm now joined by Mike Tyson.
00:54:25Mike, first of all, let's go in chronological order.
00:54:28The headbutt in the second round,
00:54:31the headbutt in the second round,
00:54:32which opened the gash on your eye.
00:54:33Tell us about that first, please.
00:54:34He butted me in the first round,
00:54:36but then he butted me again in the second round.
00:54:38Then as soon as he butted me, I watched him.
00:54:40He had me holding in.
00:54:40He looked right at me, and I saw him,
00:54:42and he kept going for it, and he butted me again.
00:54:44He kept going down and coming up, and he charged into me.
00:54:47And no one warned him.
00:54:48No one took any points for him.
00:54:50What am I to do?
00:54:50This is my career.
00:54:51I can't continue getting butted like that.
00:54:53I got children to raise,
00:54:54and this guy keeps butted me, trying to cut me
00:54:56and get me stopped on cut.
00:54:57I got to retaliate.
00:54:58Now, immediately, you stopped.
00:55:00You stopped fighting immediately right there,
00:55:02and you turned to Mills Lane, and you said what?
00:55:03And the result was he did nothing.
00:55:05But what did you say to Mills right at that time?
00:55:08I don't remember what I said.
00:55:09I told him that he butted me,
00:55:10but I know I complained about being butted.
00:55:12And we complained about the first fight.
00:55:14Listen, Holyfield is not the tough warrior everyone says he is.
00:55:17He got a little nicks on him there, and he quit.
00:55:19I got an eye.
00:55:20I got one eye.
00:55:21I got one eye.
00:55:22He's not impaired.
00:55:22He got ears.
00:55:23I got one eye.
00:55:24Big deal.
00:55:24If he take one, I got another one.
00:55:26I'm ready to fight.
00:55:26He didn't want to fight.
00:55:27I'm ready to fight him right now.
00:55:28Mills Lane, though.
00:55:29Mills Lane stopped the fight.
00:55:30It wasn't Holyfield who stopped the fight.
00:55:31Oh, he didn't want to fight.
00:55:32He didn't want to fight.
00:55:33Let me ask you.
00:55:34We don't know what Mills is.
00:55:35Don't put nothing to him, Mills.
00:55:36Well, Mills said he stopped the fight.
00:55:38You bit him.
00:55:39Was that a retaliation for the eye when you bit him in his ear?
00:55:42Regardless of what I did, he butted me for two fights.
00:55:45But you got to address it, Mike.
00:55:47I did address it.
00:55:48I dressed it in the ring.
00:55:50Why did you do that, though, Mike?
00:55:52I mean, was that the proper response?
00:55:53Look at me.
00:55:53Look at me.
00:55:54Look at me.
00:55:55Look at me.
00:55:55I got to go home.
00:55:56My kids are going to be scared of me.
00:55:57Look at me, man.
00:55:58What are you going to do now in terms of your career, Mike?
00:56:00Well, you continue to fight.
00:56:01Okay.
00:56:04That's the story from back here.
00:56:06Let's send it back out to you, Steve.
00:56:08Of course, they're not going to get on Mills Lane.
00:56:10They're the ones that triggered the change.
00:56:12But let me ask you this.
00:56:13Does a headbutt warrant this kind of return on his way to a hospital?
00:56:19There he will surely need surgery to repair the damage done to his right ear.
00:56:24Again, Holyfield circled here on his way to a Las Vegas hospital.
00:56:27And now I'm told disciplinary action is already being imposed on Tyson.
00:56:33My name is Dr. Gamm.
00:56:34I'm the chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
00:56:37And pursuant to our revised Nevada Revised Statute 467.156, Mike Tyson is temporarily suspended.
00:56:47His purse will be held.
00:56:50Theories and speculation, it is safe to say that no sporting event in recent memory has provoked more outrage and
00:56:57has raised more questions.
00:56:58Now, we will try to update you on all the current issues and controversies surrounding this battle.
00:57:04I wouldn't understand why he would do something like that.
00:57:06I think maybe he did it for the pressure, under the pressure, and he couldn't beat him.
00:57:12He was feeling bad.
00:57:13There was a lot of questions to be asked.
00:57:16Why?
00:57:17Despite all of the anger, humor, and indignation over Tyson's macabre behavior, the question remained.
00:57:23Why did Tyson resort to biting?
00:57:25According to his camp, what instigated Tyson's anger and provoked the biting was a series of intentional headbutts.
00:57:33Holyfield denies the headbutts were intentional and claims it was a left hook, not a butt, that opened the gash
00:57:39over Tyson's eye.
00:57:42As we showed you in the original telecast, here's where the headbutt occurred.
00:57:47Tyson says it was intentional, but the referee ruled it accidental.
00:57:52Tyson complained to the referee as Holyfield continued to fight, throwing and landing a left hook.
00:57:59He told us he believed caused the gash over Tyson's right eye.
00:58:04Another angle shows Tyson's momentum from the missed punch puts him off balance, causing the two fighters to accidentally bang
00:58:12heads.
00:58:13Now watch this.
00:58:15You can see a small trickle of blood on Tyson's cheek.
00:58:19This happened before Holyfield landed his left hook.
00:58:24The image of Tyson savagely biting Holyfield's ears has circulated around the world, raising a myriad of questions.
00:58:32Was the biting premeditated?
00:58:33Did he do it with or without his mouthpiece?
00:58:36How serious was the damage?
00:58:38Here's what happened.
00:58:41The third and what turned out to be the final round of the fight begins with Tyson leaving his corner
00:58:47early without his mouthpiece.
00:58:50Now this raised speculation that the biting could have been premeditated.
00:58:58Here it is again.
00:58:59Tyson's trainer, Richie Giacchetti, in the upper right-hand corner of your screen, is yelling at his fighter and the
00:59:06referee Mills Lane about the missing mouthpiece.
00:59:09Now Lane's back is to Tyson's corner, so he can't see Giacchetti.
00:59:14Meanwhile, Holyfield spots it.
00:59:16He sees Giacchetti and gets Lane's attention.
00:59:20Lane then sends Tyson back to his corner to retrieve his mouthpiece.
00:59:24Although this doesn't shed light on Tyson's thinking, it clearly absolves Giacchetti of any premeditated action.
00:59:31Two minutes and 25 seconds into the round, Tyson shocks the world by biting Holyfield's right ear.
00:59:41Lane, surprised by Holyfield's strange antics, calls time out to find out what's going on.
00:59:50Now as Holyfield retreats to his corner, Tyson rushes across the ring and pushes him from behind.
00:59:57As we continue the saga of Tyson's mouthpiece, some speculate that he spit out the mouthpiece before he bit Holyfield.
01:00:06As you take another look of the first bite, you can see Tyson taking a chunk out of Holyfield's ear.
01:00:18And watch as he spits it out.
01:00:22It'll be circled right here.
01:00:31Now later, you'll see the mouthpiece come out of Tyson's mouth.
01:00:40And you'll see it drop to the canvas.
01:00:42And there it is, circled right there, just below Holyfield's left elbow.
01:00:47So there's no question that Tyson had the mouthpiece in when he bit Evander Holyfield.
01:00:59Now, referee Lane looks down at the canvas for the mouthpiece.
01:01:05Then up at Holyfield.
01:01:08And then calls time out to assess the situation.
01:01:15As we take a look from the overhead camera, Lane, trying to break up the clinch, sees the mouthpiece on
01:01:22the canvas.
01:01:24There it is, in the circle.
01:01:27Lane retrieves the mouthpiece, which is followed by Holyfield's reaction to the bite and then the shove into the ropes
01:01:34by Tyson.
01:01:37And again, as you can see, Lane calls timeout, picks up Tyson's fallen mouthpiece, eventually hands it to the official
01:01:44in Holyfield's corner right there,
01:01:46who in turn gives it to Holyfield's trainer, Don Turner.
01:01:52This is the same mouthpiece Ferdy Pacheco saw in Holyfield's dressing room after the fight.
01:01:59Then, just before the action in round three resumed, Giacchetti gave Tyson a new mouthpiece.
01:02:06Tyson continually fidgeted with this new mouthpiece.
01:02:11And perhaps it was this action that fueled speculation that he removed this particular mouthpiece.
01:02:18Give me a look.
01:02:20Give me a look.
01:02:20All right?
01:02:21But as you can see, he is clearly wearing the mouthpiece as the bout continued.
01:02:28Then, some two minutes after the initial bite,
01:02:36he bit the other ear.
01:02:39The second bite led to his disqualification.
01:02:45As the action, confusion, and controversy unfolded inside the ring,
01:02:49a major character in this drama was referee Mills Lane.
01:02:53Over the years, Lane has earned a well-deserved reputation as an excellent referee.
01:02:58But in this fight, questions about his decisions have been raised.
01:03:02Here is what really happened.
01:03:08You're welcome.
01:03:11Time.
01:03:13Time.
01:03:14Time.
01:03:19That's going to approach your point.
01:03:22That's going to approach your point.
01:03:25He's been in there.
01:03:28He's been in there.
01:03:29He's been in there.
01:03:32He's been in there.
01:03:33Look at that.
01:03:40He's disqualified.
01:03:41He's been in there.
01:03:42He's out.
01:03:43Coach, you can't answer.
01:03:45He's been in there.
01:03:45I can see the bite mark.
01:03:46Okay.
01:03:47You want to disqualify?
01:03:49Well, let me ask about it.
01:03:50He's been in there.
01:03:51Can you go on?
01:03:52Yeah.
01:03:53Okay.
01:03:55It's going to be two-point deduction.
01:03:57The fight will go on.
01:04:00I'm here.
01:04:01Hey.
01:04:01Let's see.
01:04:02He's been in there.
01:04:03He's got a punch.
01:04:04Bullshit.
01:04:05He's been across him.
01:04:06Two points.
01:04:07Two points.
01:04:08Two points off here.
01:04:10He's been in there.
01:04:11Two points off.
01:04:13Two.
01:04:14Two points.
01:04:16Two points.
01:04:23He's been in there now.
01:04:26He's been in there now.
01:04:35He's been out there.
01:04:56And that's it. He's gone.
01:05:00Upon further review of the fight,
01:05:02it appeared that Lane was going to deduct a point from Tyson
01:05:06for shoving Holyfield after time had been called to replace the mouthpiece.
01:05:12Only after Holyfield's corner notified the referee that the champion had been bit
01:05:18did he deduct a point for that biting foul.
01:05:22For a moment, after viewing the damage to Holyfield's ear,
01:05:27Lane appeared to want to disqualify Tyson
01:05:30and said so to Commission Executive Director Mark Ratner.
01:05:37Lane then seemed to change his mind about the disqualification.
01:05:42After learning from ringside physician Flip Pomansky that Holyfield could continue.
01:05:48Instead of stopping the bout, Lane deducted one point for the bite and one for the push.
01:05:54Incredibly, Tyson's corner claimed the wound on Holyfield's ear was caused by a punch.
01:05:59Lane quickly refuted this fiction.
01:06:01The referee did not, as previously believed,
01:06:03warned Tyson he would be disqualified if he committed the infraction again.
01:06:07It also appeared that Holyfield's corner had to tell Lane about the second bite.
01:06:12In the days following the fight, there has been a continual stream of fallout and surprises,
01:06:18including press conferences, commission hearings, and interviews.
01:06:23Van Dine, I'm sorry.
01:06:25You're a champion.
01:06:26I respect that.
01:06:28And I only shatened that the fight didn't go on further
01:06:31for that the boxing fans of the world might have seen the poor themselves who would come out on top.
01:06:37President of Nevada, revised statute 467156 that Mike Tyson be suspended,
01:06:42pending the disposition of the complaint for this mere action against him.
01:06:46I have a forgiving heart.
01:06:48You know, what happened happened, and, you know, it's behind us,
01:06:53and he said that he was going to seek to get counts to be better, and I hope that he
01:06:58do.
01:06:59As of this taping, the repercussions and ramifications from this rematch are far from over.
01:07:05Shortly, the Nevada State Athletic Commission is scheduled to impose punishment upon Tyson.
01:07:10Many believe it will exact the maximum fine, 10% of Tyson's nearly $30 million purse,
01:07:16and they predict the commission will suspend or revoke Tyson's boxing license
01:07:21for at least one year.
01:07:23But even then, the story will be far from over.
01:07:25For how will the shocking occurrences of June 28th affect the two combatants and the sport itself?
01:07:32Will we ever know what motivated Mike Tyson that night in Las Vegas?
01:07:37Was it frustration or was it uncontrolled rage?
01:07:41One thing is certain, he permanently damaged his reputation and career.
01:07:46And what of Evander Holyfield?
01:07:49Bloody but unbowed, the champion has put this unfortunate episode behind him.
01:07:53Now, he begins his quest to once again unify the heavyweight title.
01:08:00Regardless, the names of Tyson and Holyfield will forever be intertwined in boxing history.
01:08:08For all of us at Showtime Championship Boxing, this is Steve Albert saying, so long.

01:11:02As a fact, right, but Carvajal, he has a good reach advantage and punches good with his jab, but that's
01:11:08not his fight. He's going to have to become small, too, if you want to win these fights and win
01:11:11them right. Just can't stay out there with the left jab. He just doesn't know how to do that.
01:11:16He's not a jab and move fighter. Michael Carvajal has always fought as a warrior.
01:11:25Maybe Jake trying to bob and sneak inside. Carvajal moving backward and countering with the left hook.
01:11:36As Matlala shows you some of the moves which have served him through his 57-bout professional career.
01:11:45What has happened is Carvajal is laying back, trying to be a hit on the left jab. He gets behind
01:11:50on his fights and he's desperate in. He's got to wade in and fight.
01:11:53Carvajal told us yesterday that he has had difficulty with short opponents in the past. Humberto Jiquita Gonzalez was one
01:12:01who was significantly shorter than Michael. So was Mauricio Pastrana, who was able to get in and out on him
01:12:06so effectively in the last fight.
01:12:09Yeah, he decides that he's going to stand back and box and the other guys start boxing, too.
01:12:14Right hand just a little bit short by Carvajal.
01:12:25Good left hook to the body by Carvajal. He doubles up, bringing it up.
