01:57It's time for the bounce you've all been waiting for.
02:08The undisputed ruler of the ring, HBO.
02:12For over 25 years, the heart and soul of boxing.
02:17Exhilarating. Hard-hitting. Unbeatable.
02:21HBO Sports.
02:28And now, the HBO Sports presentation, Boxing After Dark.
02:50The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
03:04He has been screaming.주세요.
03:251958
04:25Bringing you a look at a handful of heavyweight hopefuls who we hope will provide for an evening of fireworks,
04:31the kind only the big guys can really offer.
04:33And with our featured bout, it doesn't get any bigger than the six-foot, eight-inch Lance Goofy Whitaker taking
04:39on the equally imposing six-foot, seven-inch Jameel McCline.
04:43So sit back and enjoy an eye-popping doubleheader with four big attractions and knockouts written all over it.
04:53Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley. We welcome you to this edition of Boxing After Dark, which was originally scheduled
04:58here at HBO as a world championship boxing showcase with a rapidly rising heavyweight star and contender Vladimir Klitschko, who's
05:07from the Ukraine, fights out of Germany, and may somewhere down the line be a likely opponent for Lennox Lewis
05:13or whoever holds the heavyweight championship at that time.
05:17However, on Thanksgiving Day, Klitschko phoned the United States to say that he had torn a shoulder muscle in training.
05:23So he fell off of the card. The man he was originally scheduled to fight, David Izon, now moves into
05:29the preliminary bout against Frazo Kendo, who's intriguing, unbeaten, has a slightly different style, and is trained by the father
05:36of Felix Trinidad.
05:38And then in the main event, you'll see the bout, which was originally scheduled as the warm-up, as six
05:43-foot, eight-inch Lance Whitaker, now changing his name to Goofy, takes on Jameel McCline.
05:48So let's take a look at the tail of the tape for the first bout between Izon and Okendo.
05:56And you can see that David Izon, who was on the 1992 Nigerian Olympic team, has already reached the relatively
06:03advanced age of 33.
06:05Okendo is 28. There's a one-inch height advantage for Izon.
06:09They're equal in reach, and they weighed in a couple of days ago at 228 and 222.
06:16Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
06:20The David Izon-Frazo Kendo fight is scheduled for 10 rounds, non-title, using the rules of the New York
06:27State Athletic Commission.
06:28The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
06:31The doctor-order referee can stop the fight.
06:33You go to the scorecards if a cut is caused by an accidental headbutt, if the five rounds have been
06:38completed,
06:38and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the 10th and final round.
06:43Jim.
06:46All right, Harold, I'll be calling the boxing match, of course, with HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant
06:53and Boxing After Dark expert, legendary trainer manager Emanuel Stewart, coming off his giant success.
07:00Harold, I'll be calling the boxing match, of course, with HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant
07:06and Boxing After Dark expert, legendary trainer manager Emanuel Stewart, coming off his giant success two weeks ago with Lennox
07:15Lewis regaining the heavyweight championship.
07:17Right now, both fighters are in the ring, so let's take a closer look with Larry Merchant at Frez O
07:23'Kendo.
07:26Kendo, as Jim mentioned, is trained for the last five fights by Don Felix Trinidad, and that helped him become
07:37more established as a potential challenger,
07:41because he was known as a boxer, but seven knockdowns against up-and-coming Cliff Etienne gave him a higher
07:49profile.
07:52Well, and if he wins tonight, he may fight Chris Bird for a vacant heavyweight belt, should Tyson and Lewis
08:04engage in a championship fight.
08:07Across the ring from O'Kendo, the most frustrated man in the heavyweight division, David Izon.
08:12Here's Larry to tell you why.
08:16David Izon won a silver medal in 1992, beating on successive fights Bay, excuse me, David Tua, and Cliff and
08:29Kirk Johnson, both top heavyweights.
08:32He later lost to Tua in a 12-round slugfest as a pro.
08:36No, but for the last 14 months, he's been idle, because six or seven different fights he was supposed to
08:44have, including tonight's, incidentally, with Klitschko, have all fallen through.
08:50You'll be hearing from Emanuel Stewart as the fight begins.
08:54Oh, go ahead, Larry.
08:55Just one last item, Jim.
08:56Izon has fought in two off-beat venues here in New York before, in the Apollo Theater in Harlem and
09:06Radio City Music Hall.
09:08On both occasions, he pulled off upsets.
09:11Great vote.
09:12Now let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official introductions.
09:18Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to the Jacob K. Javits Center here in America's greatest city, New York,
09:26New York, where tonight, Cedric Kushner Promotions is proud to present heavyweight action on HBO Boxing After Dark, brought to
09:35you in association with your King of Beer, Budweiser, and Everlast.
09:40First bout also in association with Don King Productions and America Presents.
09:45These contests are sanctioned by the New York State Athletic Commission Chairman Raymond Kelly.
09:49The three judges assigned to ringside scoring this bout on the 10-point must system will be Bob Gilson, Tony
09:57Palillo, and Tom Schreck, and when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Mike Ortega.
10:04And now 10 rounds of boxing, this is in the heavyweight division.
10:12Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing blue trimmed with white, and weighing in at 222 pounds.
10:21His professional record, a perfect one.
10:2421 bouts, 21 victories, including 12 knockouts from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
10:31Here we go, the undefeated, Fas, Frasor Kendall.
10:41And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner, wearing red trimmed with white, and weighing in
10:48at 228 pounds.
10:50He has an excellent professional record, 27 victories, including 23 knockouts with only three defeats.
10:57Fighting out of Benzacola, Florida, here is David Eisen.
11:20Okay, gentlemen, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
11:23I want a good, clean fight.
11:24Protect yourself at all times.
11:26Obey my commands at all times.
11:28Good luck to both of you.
11:29Touch them up.
11:33David Eisen is a gatekeeper kind of heavyweight.
11:39The kind of fighter that an up-and-coming fighter is supposed to beat.
11:46We'll see if a kendo can.
11:51There aren't many braver fighters than David Eisen, who in at least two of his wins absorbed so much punishment
11:59that ringside observers were calling for the fights to be stopped before Eisen came back to gain miracle victories.
12:07David has admitted himself that he's taken a lot of punishment in his recent fights,
12:11and has said that he's been concentrating a lot more in training camp now on being more diversified in his
12:18upper body movement.
12:19And instead of just holding his hands over his head, basically walking opponents down,
12:25much in the style of a lot of the boxers who come from the African countries.
12:28He trained the fight, the six-foot-six-inch, 255-pound boxer-puncher, Vladimir Klitschko.
12:36He finds himself instead in against a 220-pound heavyweight who boxes and moves an entirely different style,
12:45Okendo.
12:45As a matter of fact, Okendo probably is one of the few heavyweights today who utilizes footwork a lot.
12:52Most of the fighters, including Chris Berry, who's a good defensive fighter,
12:56but primarily uses his elbows and his upper body movement without much footwork.
13:01But in Okendo, he's going to deal with a target who's going to be steadily moving and changing angles.
13:06And just as you were making the point, Emmanuel, Okendo used his feet to set up a left hook
13:10by jumping into a different angle and firing the left hook lead that landed against Aizon.
13:15Aizon is working out tonight, but at least he's showing better upper body movement himself.
13:19I guess training with Roy Jones where he's been for the last three or four years
13:23and Roy Jones' trainer has improved him a little bit too.
13:27To what degree it's going to be effective tonight, I don't know.
13:30Because of all the fits and starts in Aizon's career, we haven't seen him in 14 months.
13:35So what he's been doing in the gym will all be revealed tonight.
13:40Okendo with a solid right hand to the body.
14:04Okendo with a long jab and he's using it effectively right now.
14:09Ok, very effectively and it is amazing most of the times when the jab is coming at Aizon,
14:15he moves his body to the left, he never hardly slips to the right where he can avoid that.
14:19Okendo with a jab, He's getting hit with a jab.
14:24Once again, he was getting hit with a jab.
14:26He's always moving his body to the left as he feels that he's getting close to Okendo.
14:31And you saw Okendo look upstairs and land the jab to the body.
14:35Jab has been a very effective weapon at this point in the fight.
14:46Aizan missing wildly with the left hook
14:48Okendo continues to land the jab
14:51Increasingly effective as round one has gone on
14:54The jab as well as the balance and the footwork
14:57Is making a big difference right now
14:58And Okendo is working it to his advantage
15:02And in Okendo's corner
15:04Where they will speak Spanish between rounds
15:07Our interpreter is the familiar Hector Garcia
15:22Keep walking that ring
15:23You have to walk a little more that ring
15:25Use that jab
15:27Your jab is good but you have to keep walking around
15:30Be calm
15:33You got to move side to side
15:35Always to his left
15:39Don't stand still in one spot
15:42You got to move around
15:43Never near the ropes
15:46You just got to keep moving around
15:53Well whatever there is new about David Aizan wasn't working in the first round
15:58Let's see what plan B is
16:00CompuBox numbers focusing on Okendo's jab
16:04He landed 15 out of 44
16:06Aizan was 1 of 17
16:08And the poultry 2 out of 28 connects in the entire round for Aizan
16:12So Okendo got off to a good start
16:14And mounted an offense that dictated the initiative in round one
16:20Both fighters had very good amateur background
16:22But it's amazing that still Aizan
16:25But it's amazing that still Aizan for the most part fights with his body square
16:42Okendo was raised in Chicago
16:45Both of his parents were from Puerto Rico
16:47So he felt comfortable going back to Puerto Rico a couple of years ago to work with Trinidad
16:52Took his family from Chicago to Puerto Rico
16:54As an amateur in Chicago
16:55He had designs on making the 1996 American Olympic team
17:00But was stopped short of that goal by fellow Chicagoan
17:03Nate Jones who went on and took the heavyweight spot
17:06He was introduced as coming out of San Juan
17:10Which he is now
17:11But from the age of 2 for the next 25 years
17:15He never was in Puerto Rico
17:24You're going to continue to see Okendo land a jab
17:27And get away with it because of Aizan being bent over to the left
17:32Where he can't effectively do anything after that
17:37And as Aizan keeps his body squared up
17:39It just makes him that much more available to target for Okendo's jab
17:43Very much so
17:44And he's also still flat for the two
17:46And that's going to be sooner or later
17:48I think Okendo's going to open up with more punches
17:50As he did there with a chopping overhand right
17:53That's the punch that bedeviled Clifford Etienne
17:55The night that Okendo shockingly knocked Etienne down seven times
18:00And embarrassed him on his way to an easy victory
18:03He's so affected with the left jab that the guys get preoccupied with trying to handle the jab
18:07And all of a sudden the big shots come and they never see it
18:11Aizan's left eye is beginning to swell and redden from the impact of Okendo's jab
18:17As Okendo keeps landing those jabs
18:18His confidence is going to go in pretty soon
18:20He's going to hold up with more other punches
18:22The big artillery is going to come pretty soon
18:31There are people who question how much big artillery Okendo has
18:39I'm one of those but I think you're going to see quite a bit tonight
18:41I think his confidence has grown a lot more
18:44In particular with the effect of the jab
18:46But he's going to sit down on punches a lot better
18:59Left hook landed for Okendo
19:02Another solid round for the moving heavyweight

19:31Since their memorable featherweight fight 27 years ago
19:35And World Championship Boxing returns December 15
19:38With the rubber match between heavyweight belt holder John Ruiz
19:41And former title holder Evander Holyfield
19:44HBO, the heart and soul of boxing
19:50Not back and laughing
19:52Alright, let's go
20:03David Aizan hasn't fought for more than a year and it shows
20:07Yeah, and watching Aizan eat Okendo's jab in the first couple of rounds
20:12And also get painted to a certain degree with Okendo's power shots
20:15You shudder to think of what it might have been like for Aizan
20:19Against the kinds of opponents he was expecting to fight in the last year
20:22Mike Tyson on three different occasions
20:25Haseem Rachman, that date was set up once
20:27Vladimir Klitschko
20:29It might have looked a lot worse for Aizan against guys like that
20:33Even than it has against Okendo
20:35Don't keep your hand out there
20:36Don't keep your hand out there
20:38Okendo said that earlier in this career he was a big kid for his age
20:41And as a result he was boxing with a lot of men
20:45So he had to box a lot to protect himself
20:47And I think now as he's matured as a man himself
20:50He's becoming more of a puncher in addition to being a boxer
20:59What is a puncher who doesn't land a punch?
21:01Step back, step back
21:03Not a puncher
21:04A swinger
21:07Right hand partially blocked
21:09But enough of it got through
21:11To stop Aizan in his tracks
21:13And Okendo is rapidly getting into that target practice area
21:17As David just hasn't been able to mount an attack
21:19Nope
21:20And Aizan seems to be now moving into the area
21:23Becoming more like he would with Jared Jefferson
21:26More into a defensive mode now
21:30I don't think that he can expect Okendo to get tired and keel over
21:34The way Jefferson did
21:35In their bout at Radio City Music Hall
21:37Not going to happen
21:47The good news is that Aizan is not getting hit
21:53By fuselage of punches in which you almost want to close your eyes
21:58The bad news is he himself is landing even fewer punches
22:05And I guess he's had success in fights where he was getting beat quite a bit
22:09And hurt and came back and won the knockout
22:12So knowing that's still in his mind
22:14He's going to keep coming at all times
22:16He'll never give up
22:26That's true
22:26He won't give up
22:28And that alone has caused some people to grin
22:31In situations where David
22:33Has gotten himself whacked around
22:36As he's getting whacked around right now
22:56David Aizan is taking too much punishment
23:04And Okendo has a big win
23:09David Aizan is not only a rusty fighter
23:13He's a shot fighter
23:15Yeah, he's finished
23:16And we've seen a number of Nigerian heavyweights in recent years
23:22Some of them very, very pressing
23:26Impressive
23:27But none of them able to really
23:30Get over the hurdle into being serious heavyweights
23:35As a result of this upset win
23:38And the upset win that Okendo scored
23:41Over Etienne
23:43He right now is in the midst of possibly fighting
23:46For a heavyweight championship fight
23:49Absolutely right
23:50Maybe against Chris Bird on a certain condition
23:51Because in one governing body's rankings
23:53Okendo has now moved into a spot
23:55Where conceivably
23:57He could fight for a belt
23:59Against Chris Bird
24:01And that doesn't make him a heavyweight champion
24:02In our view
24:03It means that he gets a chance
24:05To fight for a belt
24:06For a governing organization
24:07Which may choose not to recognize
24:09The real champion
24:10Lennox Lewis
24:11If he doesn't fight Chris Bird
24:12But Okendo is a threat fanning by the night
24:15He's got good boxing talents
24:16From his amateur background
24:17But now he has much more confidence
24:20In his punching power now
24:21And he was really in
24:22He was in there against
24:22An underprepared opponent
24:24Who really didn't have anything tonight
24:25You're going to watch Okendo closing the show
24:27He landed 20 of his last 39 power shots
24:32Aizan may have been looking
24:34To try to counter back off the ropes
24:35With one big shot
24:36And he took a couple swings
24:38But referee Michael Ortega
24:40Ultimately judged that Aizan just
24:42Was not doing enough
24:44To defend himself
24:45That's what he told the fighter
24:46After the stoppage
24:48I don't think there could be any complaints
24:50Coming back from Aizan
24:51And in particular
24:52In the view of so many punches
24:54He's taken in recent fights
24:55And it's a danger for him being hurt
24:57Which would hurt the entire sport of boxing
25:02Interestingly
25:04I think you're right
25:05Emmanuel
25:06I think it's a good stoppage
25:07And there's no point in watching David
25:09Continue to take that kind of punishment
25:11But frankly
25:11He's won two fights
25:13In which he got beat up worse than that
25:14That's correct
25:15But I think this was not going to happen tonight
25:22All right
25:23Let's go ring announcer Michael Buffer now
25:25For the official particulars
25:26On Okendo's TKO
25:28Ladies and gentlemen
25:29Referee Mike Ortega
25:31Calls a halt to this bout
25:33The official time
25:35Two minutes and 54 seconds
25:38Of round number three
25:39The winner by knockout victory
25:42He is still the undefeated best
25:47Freso Kendo
26:00So Freso Kendo remains undefeated
26:04And continues his upward path
26:05On the heavyweight division
26:06Final CompuBox numbers show you that
26:09David Aizan landed a pitiful nine punches
26:12Out of 72 thrown
26:13In two plus rounds
26:15While Okendo was landing a very serviceable
26:1860 out of 166
26:20Okendo began his dominance of the fight
26:22By consistently landing his jab
26:25In the first round
26:26And continued with the jab
26:28Through the second round
26:29Ultimately going almost exclusively
26:31To power shots in the third
26:33Final jab statistics
26:355 out of 36 for Aizan
26:3733 out of 111 for Okendo
26:44And now let's go up to Larry Merton
26:45In the ring with the winner
26:47Thank you Jim
26:49Congratulations Freso
26:50It's been a long journey
26:52To this night
26:54Could you notice right away
26:56That you were just too quick for him
26:57And that you
26:58Did you feel that you would eventually
27:00Finish him like this
27:01First of all
27:02First of all I want to say
27:03Shout out to my cousin Jumba
27:04And Menard and all his boys
27:06Looking out for him
27:07Mami
27:08Vino from Mexico
27:09You know my kid
27:10Maya Naeem Solomon
27:11I love you
27:11We'll be home
27:12You only get a 15 second commercial
27:14In your first shot
27:14Mami te quiero mucho
27:16Well coming into the fight
27:17I knew Aizan
27:18Was one of the best
27:19Headweight contenders in the world
27:20That's why he deserved to be
27:21One of the top 10
27:22And of course
27:23Aizan gave me the opportunity
27:25And had to take
27:26To step up with me
27:28We were too much
27:29Too quick for him though
27:30Right
27:30Yeah I'm the future
27:31I'm the
27:32So the question is
27:35Can your quickness
27:36At your size
27:38Be able to compete
27:39With the giant heavyweights
27:41We have now
27:42In the heavyweight division
27:44Oh yes
27:45Without a doubt
27:45I'm like
27:46David and Goliath
27:47See how Goliath
27:48Just fell down like a tree
27:50That's why I'm here baby
27:51I'm David
27:51Alright you're 220 plus pound
27:54David
27:55The possibility exists
27:57That if one of the
27:59Sanctioning bodies
28:01Vacates a title
28:02That you might have to fight
28:04Not a Goliath
28:06But another David
28:07Chris Bird
28:09Is that something you want to do
28:10Or do you want to wait
28:12For some bigger game
28:13Well that's
28:15We got to talk
28:15With my management team
28:16My promoters
28:17Don't fret
28:17It's Nicolas Medina
28:18But of course
28:19I'll prepare well
28:20For heavyweight championship
28:21Chris Bird
28:22It'll be a classic
28:22And also John Ruiz
28:24I like to send
28:25A little message
28:26I'm ready baby
28:26Thank you very much guys
28:28Thank you
28:29Jim
28:30Alright thank you Larry
28:32Emanuel Stewart
28:32Realistically that was
28:34Not much of a test
28:35No test at all really
28:36So how good is
28:37Fresno Kendo at this point
28:39We don't know
28:40But I was very impressed
28:41With what I saw
28:42I like any boxer
28:43Who operates
28:44Behind his left jab
28:45And I thought
28:46Fres did a great job
28:47Tonight
28:47He did everything
28:48After he started
28:49Landing his jabs
28:50And he realizes
28:51That it was time
28:52To send the big boys in
28:53After he landed the jab
28:54And he's got a lot
28:55Of excitement
28:55And enthusiasm
28:56About what he's doing
28:57He's a refreshing
28:58Welcome new site
28:59On the heavyweight division
29:00The kinds of guys
29:01Who have beaten Chris Bird
29:03Ike Bayabuchi
29:04Vladimir Klitschko
29:05Big strong guys
29:06Who just went through
29:07The smaller Bird
29:08This is a different
29:09Kettle of fish
29:10Could he beat Chris Bird
29:11If you were to fight him
29:12For that belt
29:12It would be a very
29:13Interesting fight
29:14First of all
29:15Chris Bird is a very
29:16Intelligent thinking fighter
29:17Very good defense
29:19But his defense is different
29:20Because he basically
29:21Lays in the ropes
29:22Picks punches off
29:23Moves around lightly
29:24You have to put a lot
29:25Of pressure on Chris Bird
29:26You have to be very
29:27Physical with Chris Bird
29:28And you can't be intelligent
29:30When you fight Chris Bird
29:31You have to just come in
29:32And just start fighting
29:32And don't think too much
29:34And I don't know
29:34It could be a difficult
29:35Fight for him
29:36Fighting being that
29:37One guy is a very good
29:38Defensive fighter
29:39By moving around the ring
29:40Another guy is a great
29:41Defensive fighter
29:42By laying in the ropes
29:43And slipping and sliding
29:44Punches
29:44But it would be a great
29:45Defensive fight
29:46To a certain degree
29:47Until somebody decides
29:48Until somebody
29:48Has got to start fighting
29:50All right
29:50We got to get to the
29:51Second of our two fights
29:52But Larry wants to make
29:53One more comment
29:54What is
29:55People want their
29:57Heavyweight champion
29:58To be an eagle
30:00Not a hummingbird
30:01Yeah
30:01I'll just leave it at that
30:03That's what they want
30:04It isn't always what they get
30:05But yes
30:06We understand that
30:08All right
30:08One fight down
30:10Still to come this evening
30:11The second of our two
30:12Heavyweight bouts
30:13Will pit
30:13Jameel McCline
30:14Six feet seven inches tall
30:16From the north shore
30:17Of Long Island
30:18He'll have a big local
30:19Following here
30:19In the Javits Center
30:20Tonight
30:21And his opponent
30:22Is six foot eight inch
30:23Lance Whitaker
30:24Changing his name to Goofy
30:26Next time you see him
30:27He wants to be called
30:28Goofy and only Goofy
30:29They're coming up
30:30Against each other next
