00:00...all downhill once you hit 30.
00:02Mill Royal Hustle...
00:03It has been referred to as the theater of the unexpected.
00:07With any fight.
00:10What an uppercut by Douglas.
00:13Down goes Tyson.
00:14At any place.
00:16And somebody in a parachute has just landed on the edge of the ring.
00:24In any round.
00:31If he gets up, he probably wins the fight.
00:37Unbelievable! Unbelievable!
00:40Richard Steele stopped the fight a few and a five seconds ago.
00:43By any punch.
00:47Down goes Thor on the right hand.
00:50An unbelievably close-in right-hand shot.
00:55Anything can happen.
00:58I expect a clean fight.
01:00You protect yourself at all times.
01:01Take hands.
01:02Can I possibly get the belt?
01:03Good luck.
01:0412 rounds.
01:06Who would have believed that a 10-to-1 underdog would have outjammed,
01:10outsped, and outslugged one of the best in the business?
01:17Off-lock.
01:18Hard run.
01:19Bo rumbles into the corner.
01:21Galana goes in the look.
01:22Let's see how much more he can do.
01:25Who could have thought that the young heavyweight would have been leading on every scorecard despite his lack of control?
01:34He looked.
01:35Here's another low blow.
01:37That's the second point.
01:39It does it from the scorecards against Galana.
01:41Who would have imagined that the former champion would have escaped victorious while lying on his back?
01:49That was another low blow.
01:51Down goes Bo.
01:52Now that's the disqualification.
01:56And who would have envisioned the nightmare that would follow?
02:00And now there's a thing in the ring that's been started by some of Bo's handlers who went after a
02:06little too good.
02:07Somebody's going to get hurt in there.
02:09Somebody's going to get hurt.
02:10Millions of people still have questions, but only two men have the answers.
02:45Millions of people still have questions, but only two men have the answers.
02:46Live from the Atlantic City Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, TVKO presents the rematch of Bo versus Galana.
02:54The night begins with Terrence Coffin taking on Victor Miller in a lightweight fight, followed by a junior lightweight bout
03:00featuring Cuban defector Joel Casamayor against Roberto Sierra.
03:04Then three heavyweight matchups, South African knockout sensation, Courage Shabalow, facing Brian Scott.
03:12Former champion Tim Witherspoon battles the dangerous Ray Mercer.
03:16And in our main event, the much-anticipated rematch between Riddick Bowe and Andrew Galata.
03:24Bowe versus Galata is being brought to you by Beachwood Age Budweiser.
03:29It's always been true.
03:30This Bud's for you.
03:32And by AT&T, your true choice.
03:38Atlantic City, New Jersey.
03:39This is the scene where two men will find each other again in the middle of the ring.
03:44One desperately seeking to find himself.
03:47The other looking to make his mark in indelible ink.
03:50There is a golden opportunity waiting to be won here tonight.
03:54But just as this is a place where winning and losing are clear-cut, only one man will leave the
04:01ring tonight with what he came to find.
04:03And that is victory in this Saturday night showdown by the shore.
04:10Hello again, everybody, and welcome.
04:12I'm Nick Charles here at the Atlantic City Convention Center where boxing takes center stage tonight.
04:17We've got five fights to bring you.
04:19You'll see one of the smoothest and potentially exciting junior lightweights to hit these shores in years
04:24as Olympic gold medalist Joel Casamayor pursues his American dream.
04:29There's also power-punching, unbeaten South African heavyweight Courage Shabalala.
04:34We'll watch veterans Ray Mercer and Tim Witherspoon clash,
04:38both in need of the win that would vault them back into the heavyweight title picture.
04:42But the main course this evening is the main event.
04:45Riddick Bowe against Andrew Galata.
04:46Will Bowe, in essence, be able to save his career, which some say is on life support because of Galata,
04:53who was beating him from pillar to post five months ago?
04:56Bowe escaped that riot-torn night in New York City.
04:59But there is nowhere to hide tonight.
05:01Can Andrew Galata do it again?
05:04Will Riddick Bowe be able to answer the alarm?
05:06Those are the two most intriguing questions of this night.
05:09The answers are just ahead.
05:11And now to the men at ringside who can tell us more.
05:13Here's Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, and George Foreman.
05:18All right.
05:18Thank you very much, Nick Charles, and welcome all of you in our audience tonight
05:22to the continuation of what is already boxing's most bizarre story of 1996
05:26and what has every potential to become one of the most significant as well.
05:31Working with me as always, and as Nick mentioned, our fight analyst, Larry Merchant.
05:36Larry, looking down the road to the main event, Galata against Bowe,
05:39what most intrigues you about this rematch?
05:41Coming off a two-man riot that turned into a 500-man riot,
05:46I'm wondering whether we might have a one-man riot tonight,
05:51whether Riddick Bowe, in fact, can dominate the fight the way he was supposed to the first time,
05:59and whether Andrew Galata can raise his game against a Bowe,
06:04who presumably is better prepared this time.
06:08Jim, this is the first rematch I can recall
06:11in which the winner of the first fight demanded it
06:16because he knew he had performed poorly
06:19and had suffered serious damage to his reputation.
06:23A winner, incidentally, whose esteemed trainer, Eddie Futch,
06:27was so disgusted with Bowe and his manager, Rock Newman,
06:33that he walked out on both of them.
06:35I'm ready for anything tonight, Jim.
06:37The last time that Bowe was in a rematch,
06:40the second fight with Evander Holyfield,
06:42some nutball flew out of the sky and tried to crash the ring.
06:46Who knows?
06:48Yeah, anything is possible tonight.
06:50Futch's departure, just one of the many salient subplots
06:53that attach to this drama tonight.
06:55Of course, no one knows more about the battles between big heavyweights
06:58than the man with the highest knockout percentage
07:01in the whole history of the division.
07:03Our George Foreman and George Larry established the irony here.
07:06The man who dominated the first fight
07:08didn't walk away with a victory.
07:10Riddick Bowe hopes to use what happened in Madison Square Garden
07:13as an embarrassment to motivate him tonight.
07:16Galata, of course, draws a lot of confidence
07:19from what he was able to do.
07:20Who, in your view, is the biggest beneficiary, psychologically,
07:23of what happened on July 11th?
07:25Hey, I beat this guy.
07:27I whipped him from pillar to post.
07:28Why would he want to fight me again?
07:30That hurts a guy psychologically.
07:32Riddick Bowe is sitting high now.
07:34He's thinking, hey, this guy thought he whipped me,
07:36and I'm fighting him again, and I volunteered for the fight.
07:38He's got to be sitting high.
07:39Now, Galata's got to be wondering, hey, this guy's not afraid of me.
07:42I hit him with my best, and yet he wants some more.
07:45I think Riddick Bowe has more to gain here,
07:47and he has the psychological advantage here.
07:49All right, we'll be talking plenty about Bowe Galata
07:51as the evening goes on, but first,
07:53because Terrence Cawthon won an Olympic bronze medal this summer.
07:56He gets to make his professional debut
07:59on a boxing card like this in the first fight.
08:01Pretty exciting for a young fighter, huh, George?
08:03No, I think so.
08:04The whole world is going to see him.
08:05You start on top, but if you lose,
08:07the whole world will see you, so you only can go down.
08:09So he's better be on the best of conditions.
08:12Well, there is young Terrence Cawthon,
08:14who comes from Trenton, New Jersey, by way of Philadelphia,
08:16and the Joe Frazier Gym in Philadelphia.
08:19You see his amateur record, 150 wins, 9 losses, no draws, 45 KOs.
08:25That was Terrence Cawthon's record in the amateur ranks.
08:28Now he gets ready to make his professional debut,
08:31and we remind you, as we will all through the evening,
08:33when you see the records of the fighters tonight,
08:35they're being brought to you by The Ring, the Bible of boxing.
08:39It is likewise the professional debut for 30-year-old Victor Miller,
08:45who is cast in the role of the hapless opponent here.
08:49Let's see if he cooperates with the opportunity for young Cawthon.
08:53You can see that the amateur record for Victor Miller wasn't all that bad.
08:57184 wins and only 16 losses.
09:05Victor Miller shadowboxing in his corner of the ring.
09:09Terrence Cawthon over on the far side.
09:13And we look at the tail of the tape for this professional Cawthon debut.
09:19They weigh in at the lightweight level, about 135 Cawthon, three-quarters of a pound,
09:23over the limit of one-and-a-half-inch reach advantage for Miller.
09:26All eyes on young Cawthon here to see what kind of a prospect he's going to be.
09:30Rules of this first bout, and they are the rules for every fight you'll see this evening
09:34with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
09:36The Terrence Cawthon-Victor Miller fight is scheduled for four rounds.
09:40The standing eight count is in effect.
09:42There is no three-knockdown rule.
09:44Only the referee can stop the fight.
09:46And you cannot be saved by the bell at any round, including the fourth and final round.
09:50Jim.
09:51All right.
09:51Now let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer to start the evening off from there.
09:55Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to an evening of world-class professional boxing
10:01brought to you by Main Events and Caesars Atlantic City
10:05in association with your undisputed, undefeated king of beers, Budweiser.
10:11This Bud's for you.
10:13All the bouts tonight are sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board,
10:17Boxing Commissioner Larry Hazard, Sr., Chairman Jerry Gormley,
10:21Board Members Stephen Katz and Gary Shaw,
10:23Deputy Commissioner John Greco, Chief Inspector is Sylvester Kyler,
10:29the Chief Physician at Ringside, Dr. Charles Wilson,
10:31attending ringside physicians Dr. Eric Wernser, Dr. Earl Shaw, and Dr. Richard Snepper.
10:38The timekeepers will be Earl Curry and Roosevelt Gilbert.
10:41The three judges for this first contest will be Melvina Latham,
10:46Joseph Pasquale, and Barbara Perez.
10:49And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action, your referee, Earl Morton.
10:56And now, ladies and gentlemen, a special four-round bout in the lightweight division.
11:02Introducing first, fighting out of the red corner,
11:06he's wearing blue trunks and weighs in at 135 pounds.
11:10He comes to us from the Bronx and New York City.
11:13Let's welcome, making his professional debut, Victor Chenuwine Miller.
11:24And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner.
11:28Wearing white, trimmed with red letters.
11:31Also making his professional debut,
11:33he fights out of smoke in Joe Frazier's gym in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
11:38He weighs 135 and three-quarter pounds.
11:42Ladies and gentlemen, from the U.S. Olympic team,
11:45a 1996 Olympic bronze medalist,
11:49making his pro debut, Terrence the Heat Cawthin.
12:08A pretty good heavyweight, Joe Frazier, is in Cawthin's corner.
12:14His son, Marvis Frazier, also a heavyweight, trains and manages Cawthin.
12:26Cawthin couldn't quite find his way through the forest of Olympic scoring
12:30to that gold medal, hopes to achieve gold in his professional career.
12:36At only 20, Terrence already has two children and a third on the way,
12:40and he's quite realistic about his professional career.
12:42He says, I've got to do my best to put bread on the table for my kids.
12:54He says, I'm a good man.
12:55He says, I'm a good man.
13:02Round one of a scheduled four, Terrence Cawthin, the Southpaw,
13:06intent mostly so far to let the middle of the encounter,
13:09but there Cawthin steps in behind a jab
13:11And pounds to the body a little bit
13:14When you think about Terence Kaufman coming from Joe Frazier's camp, he may be a softball
13:19You gotta slip maybe a softball, but Joe Frazier would not be any trouble trying to coach a left-handed
13:24because in Philadelphia
13:25They love to throw left hooks anyway
13:29Left is the power punching hand in that Philadelphia tradition Joe Frazier of course
13:34Couldn't get that left hook on you quite enough George, but did a lot of damage to a lot of
13:39other heavyweights
13:41I'll watch those feet
13:44Victor Miller seemed to be steady doesn't back up
13:50Probably what you don't want to fight a Philadelphia fighter a guy coming out of Philadelphia. You don't want to
13:54walk to him. They love that
13:58Well, it was the two-time New York State Golden Gloves champion at the national finalists a
14:05Couple times in his amateur career
14:0789 and 90 I'm told he won the New York State Golden Gloves awfully late to start a pro career
14:12at age 30, but
14:14Whatever obstacles might have stopped him along the way. He surely comes in with high hopes tonight
14:19And a chance to get a lot of attention if he can spring an upset against Terence Kaufman in his
14:23pro debut
14:30He'll are missing wildly with a right and coffin shows an ability to counter accurately inside
14:36and he moves out of the way, so
14:39There's some boxing coach in that camp also. This guy's doing a good job of boxing
14:44Hit and move out of the way
14:47Kaufman
14:50Harvest wasn't a bad boxer himself got rushed along a little bit in his professional career and probably had a
14:55date with Larry Holmes too early
14:57Date with Mike Tyson at the wrong time in his career. Marvis knew a thing or two about boxing
15:02That's probably the coach input. Frazier sure they'd like to slug it out
15:15Relatively uneventful round one of Terence Kaufman's professional debut first of five fights tonight on this TV KO live car
15:29Oh
15:30Oh
15:30You're doing beautiful
15:33He's throwing one jack
15:34He's throwing one jack
15:35All you do is throw the double jack and everything is set up right from there
15:38Okay, this guy's trying to punch you
15:40Yeah, okay, and I want you to pop after you throw the hook, okay, but you're doing beautiful out there,
15:45baby
15:46You got to take it to him, okay?
15:47Keep shooting that one to the right hand and once what she's in front of you when he's going like
15:51this how about shoot
15:54Yes, sir
15:55Deep breath, deep breath
15:56How you feel?
15:56Good to me
15:57All right?
15:59Double jab
16:00Double jab
16:01Double jab, right?
16:02Yes, sir
16:03Right?
16:03Yes, sir
16:04Step around one more
16:06Yes, sir
16:07All right?
16:08Just how we're going to do
16:09Here's your Philadelphia left hook coming
16:12Right there, not much power in it, an arm punch
16:16I thought that Cartman showed a lot of good quickness, reflexes
16:23But still a lot of amateur that he has to work out of his system
16:29First round of punch count numbers as our punch stat guys from CompuBox warm themselves up for the evening
16:36Terence Cawthon landing 25 punches in the first round to only three for Victor Miller
16:45And you'll be seeing Harold Letterman scores for each round at the bottom of the screen as the evening goes
16:50on
16:50From time to time we'll summarize Harold's scorecard for you
17:07Hard right hand to the chest by Victor Miller
17:10That may he may benefit by that more than you think
17:13You're fighting a fast guy, you've got to find ways to make him slow down
17:17Okay, hold it
17:17The best way to do it is hit him around the chest
17:19Okay
17:21George Foreman always a huge fan of body blows and he loves those blows to the lung area that suck
17:27the wind
17:27All right, what are we doing? Stop, let his hand go, let his hand go, come on
17:31Come on, let his hand go
17:32Okay
17:32Cawthon, some fierce infighting there
17:35Earl Morton gets him to back away without having to lay his hands on him and pull him off
17:50All right, let him go, let him go, come on, come on, come on
17:52All right, let's go
17:54Let's go
17:57Let's go
17:58Sometimes when you're training a young fighter like this Terence Cawthon
18:01They do so well in the gym
18:03Sometimes they do funny things out in the fight, you don't know what to tell them because you know they
18:07have it
18:07But why won't he just do what he's been doing in the gym?
18:10Are you suggesting, George, that this is not a good venue for a young fighter to make his debut in?
18:17With all of these folks here with all of the hoopla around it?
18:20No, I would say not
18:21You want him to get off on his own and he's doing pretty good but a lot of the amateurism
18:25is showing up like
18:26Uh, Jim said earlier
18:29But, but he's starting to open up more here in round two and now he's got Victor Miller totally on
18:34the defensive
18:35As you saw Miller covering up unable to throw punches as Cawthon fired combinations
18:39So just within the past 20 seconds Cawthon's begun to become a lot more self-assertive in there
18:52There's a good combination right in the left
18:54And now we're working to watch this carefully as Miller backs up along the ropes manages to fire a shot
19:01back
19:01But he's still defending himself
19:04Miller's having a hard time finding this guy
19:07I would hit him if I could only see him
19:09Well, when your manager lines you up in your pro debut to face a southpaw
19:14You gotta ask him
19:16What are you thinking of me?
19:18Not only a softball but a fast softball
19:21An Olympic bronze medal softball
19:23Let's not kid ourselves guys
19:25We all know why Miller is here
19:27Oh
19:32Pumelo yellow la quina
19:34Yellow la quina en la cabeza, okay?
19:36Don't go there
19:37The only thing, you're not relaxing out there, okay?
19:40You're not relaxing and you're standing in front of him to get hit, okay?
19:43I don't want you standing in front of him to get hit, okay?
19:46There's no reason for you to stand there
19:47I want you to start jabbing, okay?
19:49Start jabbing and start moving side to side
19:51Don't stand in front of him, stop
19:52I told you don't start
19:54Don't start chasing
19:56You're not, that's not
19:58You can see the kind of potential that Carthin has with his fast hands
20:04But none of those punches is thrown with mean intentions
20:09Or at least with professionally mean intentions
20:16All right, seconds out
20:18They're somewhere between a slap
20:20And a good professional punch
20:22Back up
20:23Well, he's got a habit of arm punching without his body behind it
20:26And the way they score amateur boxing now
20:28It's so easy to fall into that habit
20:31Yeah, it's gonna take a while for Joe Frazier and that group
20:33To get him to settle down and turn him over
20:36And once he does
20:38You're gonna see some power
20:40Harold Letterman, how do you have this after two rounds?
20:43Larry, 20 to 18, two rounds to death
20:45And Terrence Gawthin
20:46Not a tough fight to short
20:47The only thing tough about it was
20:48Should Terrence Gawthin have gotten a 10-8 round in the second round
20:52Because he won it so decisively
20:53Victor Miller's left eyes close it up
20:55And Terrence Gawthin got a heck of a right hand for Southport
20:57There was that vicious right hook
21:17Round three of a scheduled four
21:19A couple of lightweights professional debut of Terrence Gawthin
21:26originally from trenton now out of philadelphia and joe frazier's gym wearing the white trunks
21:32in the ring against victor miller though terence coffin has landed a harder shot done most of the
21:40damage he's still the most cautious that tells you about this guy he's in and out of the box
21:47a genuine boxer no one's going to change that nature
21:58well maybe it's a good combination a natural genuine boxer in the frazier gym where
22:02he might pick up some aggression and some power punching technique yeah that's going to be a
22:07real good thing to watch as the future unfolds itself will he put all of that together
22:21he will not be babied into joe frazier's gym he didn't even baby his son
22:29he was tough on marvis
22:33demanded a lot of it marvis wanted very much to please his dad
22:43hard right hand as miller was backing away
22:47that's what miller's having all the problems even when he back away thinking i'm out of range
22:51he gets slapped with a punch anyway
23:29three rounds down in the pro debut of terence coffin meanwhile still to come tonight
23:34a relatively celebrated recent defector from cuba joel casamayor chasing dollars here in the united
23:43states instead of further amateur gold for cuba and casamayo will be taking on a fighter named roberto
23:50sierra in what is an early showcase in his developing professional career fighting at 135 pounds tonight
23:58looking ultimately to move down nine pounds all the way to the talent loaded featherweight division 126.
24:06all right all right let's do it to work
24:08all right you understand what i'm saying
24:10all right so what are you going to do when you get out there
24:13you got to go out there and you got to throw the right hand
24:15don't get keep boxing but throw the right hand okay baby all right keep throw the right hand
24:19okay let me throw the right hand we're going to test you out
24:26last of four scheduled rounds now between
24:30terence coffin in the white and victor miller in the blue
24:45and you're going to have to take a chance now you just can't hold it back all night
24:49you're going to have to go for a knockout
24:52well he's got a shot at counter punching as long as coffin will lead with the jab because coffin has
24:57a
24:57habit of leaving the jab out there and not pulling it back in a hurry he's so quick that if
25:02you lean back
25:03an inch he seems to detect it with his eyes and he hit you if you're going to fight him
25:08you're just going
25:09to have to rush him and just fight yeah you're going to have to seize the aggression from him
25:16and of course that's doubly hard to do against the southpaw because
25:19they're coming at you from exactly the opposite angle from what you're used to
25:24destroys a lot of your reflexes in there all right let him out let him up let his head out
25:28okay
25:35he's going to the body now
25:43every time you miss coffin he makes you pay maybe he doesn't hurt you but he'll slap your heart
25:53and it reminds you a tiny bit of the early pernell whitaker
25:59maybe without quite so much natural ring stabbing
26:15he's not even breathing hard this could have been a 10 rounder for him
26:31he's not really turning the punches over and committing to the power though as you pointed
26:35out george a lot of times by the time he's finished throwing the punch he's already stepping back
26:39your trainers got they've got to make him believe in his power he has the power but for some reason
26:45maybe he's done that before and it and he's struck out well in the amateurs you learn that power doesn't
26:53pay off as much as the ability to sort of rat-a-tat-tat especially in an international country keep
26:59touching your opponent hard right hand to the body by coffin he doubled up with the right and came across
27:06the chin with it now he goes back to the body shows a lot of good instincts
27:10hey all right let him out come on come on let's go right now i'd say i can wait about
27:2015 or 20
27:21fights in a couple of years before you need to see him before i need to see carthin again
27:27and maybe he'll be a lot better than a real professional then
27:39so a confident terence coffin steps past trainer marvis frazier and pauses to await
27:46the decision of the judges and this is professional debut
27:55be that as it may this is an exciting moment for a young man
28:07showed some patience showed some skills handled the butterflies seemed to deal effectively with victor miller
28:28and ring announcer michael buffer will be stepping in there pretty quickly
28:33to bring us the official decision in this one as miller takes the gloves off first of five bouts
28:39on our live tv ko card tonight
28:46atlantic city new jersey rainy night outside on the boardwalk
28:58and now michael buffers ready to tell us who won the fight
29:03ladies and gentlemen by way of caesars atlantic city we go to the score cards
29:07melvina latham barbara perez and joseph pasquale all scored the bout 40 to 35 for the winner by
29:15unanimous decision winning his professional debut the 1996 olympic bronze medalist from philadelphia
29:24pennsylvania terence the heat
29:36and early christmas for coffin as he wins his professional debut and gets to take home santa's hat
29:41let's go back up to nick charles well terence coffin obviously cutting his baby teeth as a pro
29:47he's got a way to go to sharpen that blade though as you all pointed out downstairs but here's what's
29:51ahead tonight on the card on tv ko cuban junior lightweight joel casa mayor an olympic champion
29:57who decided to take the money over gold and who takes on roberto sierra next the heavyweight picture
30:03begins with courage shabba lala the south african with sizzling power who's out to add another knockout
30:10victim to the list when he goes after brian scott ray mercer tells us the bombs could be dropping all
30:16over the ring tonight when he collides with former two-time heavyweight champion terrible tim witherspoon
30:21and riddick bow against andrew galata in a rematch that should speak volumes speaking volumes is
30:29our frank the ford and frank your unique perspective on things is perpetually interesting and i'll tell
30:35you i didn't know you got around atlantic city to this degree nick my great distinction tonight is that
30:41i may very well be the only person in the whole history of convention hall who has covered both the
30:46boxing fight here and the miss america pageant as a matter of fact i judged miss america
30:51and let me tell you with all due respect to the guys judging the bo galata fight tonight
30:55it's much more difficult judging miss america in boxing you only got two big ugly guys punching each
31:02other at miss america you've got 50 good-looking women that you've got to sort out it's a grueling
31:07assignment but there are some similarities in boxing it's just a few of us ringsiders who dress black
31:14tie but at miss america all the pageant people are informal wear of course you certainly always
31:19do find some very snappy dressers at big fights moreover while boxing has always been filled with
31:25scandal miss america actually almost had one itself back in the 1930s before miss america was so
31:32respectable the promoters always wanted miss new york city to win it so that they would get more
31:37publicity one year as the judges came into this very building convention hall they were met by some
31:43hoods who let them know they were packing heat and they whispered miss new york but the miss america
31:51judges were a lot braver than a lot of boxing judges and they picked a little teenager from connecticut
31:56named marion bergeron and then they ran for their lives but tonight it's boxing at convention hall
32:02and i only think it would be appropriate if michael buffer announced the winner by crooning here he
32:08comes mr heavyweight jim lampley all right very much
