00:00:00few years ago all the 42 numbers are now dodger blue which you will see on the uniforms of every
00:00:09single player tonight jackie robinson not only one of the greatest baseball players and most
00:00:14important baseball players of all time but one of the most important americans in the history
00:00:20of our country and we will celebrate that legacy once again tonight
00:00:24red louder will don the 42 as the reds and giants do battle the call is next
00:00:34that swordfish won me the tournament

00:01:16key brian hayes and company getting set to back up the pitching of red louder middle match of three against
00:01:23the giants well red louder the key is for him to pitch ahead in the count
00:01:30only six times out of the 26 hitters he faced thursday in miami was he ahead in the count
00:01:36so what that allows him to do when he's ahead is to be able to pitch unpredictably
00:01:41you know it's really it's about him just controlling and commanding that fastball
00:01:45to both sides of the plate and carve up these giant hitters
00:01:52full nine for the giants first year skipper tony vintello is willie adamas his everyday leadoff man
00:01:59he's been hot louisa rise three hits yesterday the switcheroo casey schmidt hits third in a
00:02:05starting lineup for just the second time in his career first time this season devers chapman who was
00:02:11originally listed as the dh he flip-flopped positions with schmidt before the game got underway
00:02:17jung-hooo lee daniel susak gets a nod will brennan and drew gilbert were just summed up from triple-a
00:02:23after injuries to harrison bader and oliva
00:02:30adamas homered yesterday among his two hits
00:02:33in his last seven games hitting 393
00:02:37and nine of his eleven hits in that time have gone for extra bases
00:02:43in that time have gone for extra bases square yanked back hayes started to crash from third and we are
00:02:47underway
00:02:57bounced foul
00:03:03a louder thursday in miami career worse and runs earned runs hits
00:03:08it's famous came at five and a third against the fish reds had to split that set
00:03:14lands that changeup
00:03:16you can throw just about any pitch in any count
00:03:26hines adjusted right
00:03:28through the slider strike three
00:03:37really good slider he showed
00:03:39him just about every single
00:03:40pitch he had that at bat but
00:03:43pitching ahead in the count is
00:03:44so critical when you're not a
00:03:46high velocity guy so that you
00:03:50can throw any particular pitch
00:03:52at any particular time.
00:03:55We survive seem to be taking all
00:03:58the way ball one was three for
00:04:02four yesterday already his fifth
00:04:04multi-hit game this month he's
00:04:06hitting 390 in April that was his
00:04:11first action after he got kicked
00:04:14in the hand on an odd nullified
00:04:17would it be double play came
00:04:19Saturday in Baltimore he said
00:04:20Sunday both teams were off on
00:04:23Monday that's Pope to shallow
00:04:27left Spencer Steer coming on he
00:04:29glides underneath and makes the
00:04:31play to away Reds defense keep an
00:04:36eye on Reese Hines he has elite
00:04:39speed and a strong arm so far he
00:04:41has just one outfield assist in the
00:04:44major leagues in the minors he had
00:04:4640 outfield assists one of his
00:04:49goals this year not just to amp up
00:04:52the contact but prove elite defense
00:04:55he has the raw tools to be able to
00:04:57do it ball one to Casey Schmidt and
00:05:03something that I've seen in just
00:05:04his two games back in the bigs he
00:05:06plays a shallow a right field as
00:05:08I've seen in our shared time in
00:05:10this booth you've talked about his
00:05:11athletic ability I think he's
00:05:14daring those guys to try to hit
00:05:16that ball over his head he does
00:05:19play awfully shallow and it's
00:05:21interesting you know because no
00:05:24I'll be Marte also is a very
00:05:26gifted athlete he happens to play
00:05:28deep and the reason for that is
00:05:31because he doesn't go back on the
00:05:33ball very well where Reese Hines
00:05:35does so both of those guys
00:05:38athletically gifted but different
00:05:40styles of playing right field
00:05:43field simply because of some of
00:05:45their abilities that young man has
00:05:48a lot of ability three and one
00:05:55count on Schmidt takes a strike he
00:06:04was 0 for 3 yesterday struck out
00:06:06was hit by a pitch has been a
00:06:11hotter bat that's part of why he
00:06:12got bumped up in the order this is
00:06:15bounced to third base keep Ryan
00:06:16Hayes 1 2 3 for loud and debuted
00:06:31with the Reds his first five and a
00:06:33half years of the bigs came with
00:06:34Cincinnati welcome back Tyler Malley
00:06:37facing the Reds for the first
00:06:39first time you know what you're
00:06:45going to see a lot of fastballs you
00:06:47mentioned it I wonder the emotions
00:06:52that are running through this young
00:06:54man's body and mind coming back
00:06:56here to Cincinnati T.J.
00:06:59Friedle up the middle at some of
00:07:01the best contact we have seen from
00:07:03Friedle who did extended work with
00:07:05Chris Vileka and the hitting staff
00:07:07yesterday a lot of it Lark he
00:07:10bumped it for a long stretch I like
00:07:13the fact that he bunted a long
00:07:14stretch because what that means is
00:07:16you have to let the ball get there
00:07:18and that's exactly what he did on
00:07:19that fastball he let the ball get
00:07:22deep banged it right back up the
00:07:24middle good start the board for Matt
00:07:27McLean 0 for 2 couple of walks
00:07:30yesterday was caught stealing he's
00:07:34been walking a lot he and Friedle
00:07:38are tied for the second most walks
00:07:40on the team the contact is not
00:07:42regularly there but he's not
00:07:44chasing he's overwhelmingly swinging
00:07:47at strikes and that bounces it
00:07:51gets to the backstop easy advance
00:07:53for Friedle on a wild pitch you
00:07:56mentioned the homecoming from
00:07:57Valley Lark he did not pitch well in
00:08:00Cincinnati as a red his ERA
00:08:03lifetime at Great American
00:08:04ballpark 5.02 that is third
00:08:07highest by any pitcher who was
00:08:10started 30 games here those are his
00:08:14composite numbers but he was way
00:08:16better on the road as a red than he
00:08:18was in Cincinnati 3 and 0 now he is
00:08:26very fine command but he often
00:08:28pitches to the edges of the zone he
00:08:32does have a nasty split it's way
00:08:34better now than it was in his Reds
00:08:36days it's a good finishing pitch and
00:08:41there's a four pitch walk to
00:08:42McLean well that split is effective
00:08:44if you're throwing your fastball
00:08:46for a strike couldn't find it right
00:08:49there against Matt McLean so now he
00:08:52contends with Ellie de la Cruz
00:08:54Malley goes four seam or half the
00:08:56time the Reds as a team have
00:08:59struggled hitting barely over 200
00:09:01against four seamers that's third
00:09:03worst in baseball one of the Reds
00:09:05who's excelled Ellie de la Cruz four of
00:09:08his homers unforeseen fastballs that's
00:09:11tied for the most in the majors and
00:09:17while he's off to an incredible start
00:09:20284 shares the team lead at homers
00:09:23OPS over 900 he's still not yet hot
00:09:27and that's that's that's the thing
00:09:29about it it's like good start but he
00:09:33has yet to get hot a lot of
00:09:37expectation from this young man
00:09:43big chance first inning 0 2 on base
00:09:54and 14 straight all but one of his
00:09:5717 games he's been on base this
00:10:06year strike three punched out on a
00:10:09heater just a forcing fastball got
00:10:21a lot of the plate maybe Ellie was
00:10:24thinking about that split locked him
00:10:28up Sal Stewart homered after a nine
00:10:34pitch battle in the fourth inning
00:10:36yesterday Stuart at this point has
00:10:47to be the odds on favorite for
00:10:48National League rookie of the year
00:10:50year it's April 15th but he's off to
00:10:53a terrific start now tip well
00:10:59yesterday talk about being able to
00:11:02hit a fastball how about a fastball
00:11:04up in your eyes Sal gets to it and I
00:11:12know after the game Terry Francona
00:11:14talked about that top hand I think
00:11:16we're gonna talk about that a little
00:11:18bit more as the game goes on but he
00:11:22Tomahawk that ball at the top of
00:11:24the zone just a fantastic swing and
00:11:27he has had a fantastic start to one
00:11:36early swing on that split good
00:11:48the combination fastball up in the
00:11:49zone and then the split you can see
00:11:51Sal just way out in front
00:11:54the valley coming off his best start
00:11:56as a giant five and two thirds
00:11:58scoreless against the Phillies on
00:12:00Wednesday it's driven by Stuart right
00:12:12he takes the team lead outright give him six
00:12:17it's three nothing
00:12:25Cincinnati has homered it's seven straight games
00:12:34well stay hot young man
00:12:39you know the beautiful thing about
00:12:42this what's out it's like this is what
00:12:47he's expecting himself to do
00:12:49like there's no really surprise this is
00:12:54this is what he does now stand ball
00:13:00one to a you hadio Suarez he got a
00:13:05fastball and did not miss Daniel
00:13:16Susek receiving for the Giants today
00:13:19just his fourth start
00:13:25Giants are high on him that's driven by
00:13:28Suarez to right John who leads steeper
00:13:31trade and that's gone back-to-back jacks
00:13:354-0 Red Ligs a trio for Gino on the young
00:13:49year three runs scored in the game
00:13:54yesterday won by the Giants Willie
00:13:56Adamas home run Spencer Steer and
00:13:58South Stewart today four runs on the
00:14:02long ball entering the game in the
00:14:07National League only the Phillies and
00:14:09Dodgers had leaned on the long ball for
00:14:11runs more than the Reds could they do
00:14:14three in a row up the middle off of
00:14:18Malley it rolls and that's going to be
00:14:20a base hit Spencer Steer came to the
00:14:23Reds in a trade for Tyler Malley in
00:14:252022 and he gets the best of him first
00:14:28time tonight let's look at these home
00:14:35run swings fastball down over the
00:14:38plate we saw the high fastball home
00:14:40run yesterday this time little lower
00:14:44in the strike zone but the same
00:14:47result on a lot of drive and then a
00:14:50you heavy or Suarez you see that
00:14:53slider rotation he just waits
00:14:59it drives this ball out to right
00:15:01field Suarez 192 homers as a Red that
00:15:12shot propels him to 12th place in Reds
00:15:14history ahead of Brandon Phillips
00:15:23so after a check of Malley the Reds
00:15:27have worked a comeback hit a four pitch
00:15:30walk a backward K and now a ball in the
00:15:35dirt a second wild pitch on Malley
00:15:37gifts second to Steer and Reese Hines
00:15:40ahead in the count one and oh this was
00:15:46the comeback or by steer Hines over three
00:15:56struck out twice yesterday broke his
00:16:00bat chopped to third Chapman on the run
00:16:16five-time Gold Glover records that second
00:16:19out now Tyler Stevenson who walked
00:16:22yesterday struck out twice went over
00:16:24two he is among the Reds who have hit
00:16:27the ball hard in fact by average exit
00:16:31below he's hitting it harder than
00:16:32anyone else on the team now he has
00:16:39been striking out he has also been
00:16:42walking how do you add up that hard
00:16:44contact to one sixty two this is bad
00:16:47luck just got to keep hitting it
00:16:55hard though that's that's the thing
00:16:57you know John is a frustrating
00:16:59frustrating game the fact that you
00:17:01can do everything in your power
00:17:04correctly and make Chris solid
00:17:07contact guys out there on the field
00:17:11that have those gloves on they got a
00:17:14job to do as well swinging the
00:17:18miss the split gets the strikeout but
00:17:21the Reds go deep
00:17:25Sal Stewart with the three run bomb
00:17:28he just keeps cooking followed up by
00:17:31you Henio Suarez
00:17:33for nothing rest
00:17:42he is locked in rookie Sal Stewart
00:17:45thunders a three run homer the big
00:17:47blow in a four run first so the Reds
00:17:52have staked an early lead you Henio
00:17:56Suarez also went yard both right
00:17:59handed bats to right field rent
00:18:02louder velocity up in a one two
00:18:04three first zips in a strike to
00:18:08Rafael Devers he walked was 0 for
00:18:11three yesterday did strike out
00:18:130 and 2
00:18:30and the dirt bounces away from
00:18:32Stevenson
00:18:44louder got Adamas on the strikeout to
00:18:47begin the game
00:18:48and the dirt bounces away from
00:18:48our Kia player profile against leadoff
00:18:51men in any inning he has done wicked
00:18:55well the league is four for forty
00:18:57four nine strikeouts one extra base
00:19:00in that's an expansion lark of the
00:19:09tone setting you're talking about
00:19:10with the first pitch strike how he
00:19:12handles the first hitter of a frame
00:19:14yeah one hundred percent a lot of
00:19:17success when you're pitching a
00:19:35two two struck him out on the slider
00:19:41Devers tomahawk his bat into the dirt
00:19:44and broke it in frustration well this
00:19:52is what you want from your pitcher
00:19:53after you go out and score some
00:19:55runs you want a guy that's going to
00:19:58go out there and challenge got a
00:19:59four run lead and frustration is
00:20:03mounting the Giants dead last in
00:20:10seven runs per game barely more than
00:20:11three a contest they entered sharing
00:20:15the cellar in the National League
00:20:17West six and eleven on their year
00:20:19the Reds are ten and seven they share
00:20:22the penthouse in the central with the
00:20:24pirates at the day start strike one
00:20:27on Matt Chapman 0 for 4 reached on
00:20:32error did line out yesterday and
00:20:35bounced into a key double play link
00:20:42Chapman hails from California
00:20:45himself went to El Toro High School
00:20:49that alma mater can put its alumni
00:20:53network up against many in the
00:20:55country similar to what your alma
00:20:57mater and Joel Luck up as well
00:20:59Moeller does here in Cincinnati
00:21:01Chapman goes to right center
00:21:05among the big leaguers that played at
00:21:07El Toro Nolan Arenado another
00:21:09outstanding offense defensive third
00:21:12baseman like Chapman Paul schemes and
00:21:17there was one red briefly a red as a
00:21:19catcher Austin Romine also went to
00:21:21El Toro High School
00:21:27Jung who Lee he doubled had two hits
00:21:40yesterday part of a generational legacy
00:21:43in Korea his father Lee Jong Bum dubbed
00:21:51the each row of Korea considered one
00:21:54of the greatest all around talents in
00:21:57KBO history pops was an MVP he was an
00:22:01MVP pops was rookie of the year he was
00:22:04rookie of the year first father son duo to
00:22:07do that at KBO law and there is a tie
00:22:14between that and Cincinnati in fact to
00:22:16part of the genesis of Jackie Robinson
00:22:20Day and everyone wearing the number 42
00:22:23that was of course first displayed by
00:22:25Ken Griffey Junior as Jim detailed in
00:22:27the open in 97 later adopted a decade
00:22:30later on a bigger level in the world
00:22:33baseball classic in 2006 Jung who Lee's
00:22:37father played for the bronze medal
00:22:40Korean team in the WBC the all WBC
00:22:44outfield was each row his father and
00:22:47Ken Griffey Junior he works a walk so
00:22:59now louder's got a couple of men on he'll
00:23:04contend with Daniel Susak strong
00:23:07athlete a dual threat quarterback in
00:23:09his high school days first rounder by
00:23:13Oakland who was rule five by Minnesota
00:23:15that's the Reds next foe this coming
00:23:17road trip and traded to San Francisco
00:23:21and all happened this offseason the
00:23:23rule five and the trade he came off
00:23:26the bench and hit an impressive
00:23:27final out to end the game last
00:23:29night yeah as soon as it left his
00:23:31bat I thought this was a tie ball
00:23:33game that was the pitch that
00:23:38Emilio Pagan through and off the
00:23:43bat I was thinking oh no thank goodness
00:23:47didn't quite make it to the wall
00:23:49hit it at one oh one and a half
00:23:51will Benson had just been added for
00:23:53defense he went to the gap to make
00:23:55the catch 2 0 is fair past the
00:23:59backhand of key Brian Hayes Chapman
00:24:01around third he scores Jung who Lee
00:24:04given the windmill he rips around
00:24:05third base de la Cruz lobs it to
00:24:08third as Lee crosses standing a two
00:24:10run just fair double for Daniel
00:24:13Susak and the Giants get two back
00:24:15it's now 42 well Susak has certainly
00:24:20been really good so far this year
00:24:22hitting over 500 mentioned the
00:24:27swing he put on that pitch from
00:24:31Emilio Pagan last night and then
00:24:34drill in this double down the
00:24:36left field line speaking to Sean
00:24:40Estes he's doing play by play for
00:24:43the Giants he said he's been very
00:24:45impressed by this young man and
00:24:53now he is in scoring position
00:24:56the game louder has seen three
00:24:58straight Giants reach at the pitch
00:25:02from behind there against both Lee
00:25:05and Susak well Brennan stands in
00:25:09first met Terry Francona at a
00:25:12Royals game he grew up in Kansas
00:25:13City he was 12 years old when he
00:25:16got Tito's autograph later they
00:25:21crossed paths in Cleveland
00:25:29he was among the ads today when
00:25:31Jared Oliver and Harrison Bader both
00:25:34hit the I.L. for the Giants to
00:25:38know all of a left wrist hammy
00:25:42fracture Bader a left hamstring
00:25:45strain he had sat for a couple of
00:25:47days so Brennan and the man on
00:25:49deck Drew Gilbert came up from
00:25:51triple A as louder had some of his
00:26:03struggles in Miami I thought we
00:26:04saw some of the similar com takes
00:26:07the Giants have had this inning
00:26:10softly tapped louder off the hill
00:26:12and the ball has it gets that second
00:26:14out Susak over to third so now
00:26:28Gilbert first rounder by Houston
00:26:32and twenty two he was a college
00:26:34teammate of Chase Burns they both
00:26:36played for now giant skipper Tony
00:26:38Vitello at Tennessee Gilbert at one
00:26:42point was both a pitcher and an
00:26:43outfielder but later focused on
00:26:46position play check swing tap to
00:26:49Hayes Giants get two back Reds
00:26:54still have a two run lead it's a
00:27:04home run thing in the Reds
00:27:06organization right now here's
00:27:07today's new era presented by
00:27:09DirecTV triple A Louisville hit a
00:27:11franchise record seven home runs
00:27:13last night 18 to three win J.J.
00:27:16Bulladay Michael Tolia Edwin Arroyo
00:27:19Michael Chavis Von Johnson at two
00:27:22Blake Dunn two thousand eight
00:27:24hundred thirty nine feet of home
00:27:26runs and that is carried over here
00:27:28to the big club here and early in
00:27:30this a half a mile of homers is
00:27:33pretty good that's a lot of home
00:27:35runs from he Brian Hayes who has
00:27:40hit Tyler Malley well lifetime upstairs
00:27:46Miss Louisville one again today
00:27:48by the way not a home run for Chavis
00:27:52home run for Hector Rodriguez
00:27:54three hits for Blake Dunn who's
00:27:56hitting three eighteen borderline
00:28:04miss and that's where Malley can
00:28:07live at times the four run first
00:28:10inning one of the worst Malley has
00:28:11ever suffered he's only had one
00:28:13worse ending to begin a start in
00:28:16his career that came late September
00:28:18of nineteen here in Cincinnati against
00:28:21the Brewers when he surrendered six
00:28:23lead off walk and the other
00:28:26similarity it was back to back homers
00:28:28by Stewart and Suarez here today it
00:28:31was back to back homers by Ryan
00:28:33Braun and Eric Thames then there's
00:28:36only one other game in his life he's
00:28:38never allowed back to back home runs
00:28:43that was against the Cubs by the way
00:28:45with Schwarber and Harvey Baez T.J.
00:28:47Friedel hard single up the middle
00:28:49first time soft bunt back to Malley
00:28:51play at first sacrifice complete he
00:28:55gets Hayes up to second and I think
00:28:58that does go down as a sacrifice
00:29:00however I think T.J.
00:29:01Friedel is good enough get the ball
00:29:03down and try to bunt for a base
00:29:05hit is not great placement so he
00:29:10doesn't square around as if he's
00:29:12just going to give himself up I'm
00:29:15thinking he's thinking hey worst
00:29:17case scenario he's he's out there
00:29:18at second base and I get thrown
00:29:20out at first but he's not giving
00:29:22himself up there as part of his
00:29:24game he's trying to get a base
00:29:25hit I agree this way to Matt
00:29:30McLean but that's a team concept
00:29:33that that's a that's a individual
00:29:36at bat and the constructs of
00:29:38trying to play winning baseball
00:29:42that's what major league players
00:29:43do that's what a team guy does
00:29:45really nice job T.J. Friedel
00:29:47and mentioned Friedel had that
00:29:49extended bunt work on his personal
00:29:52off day yesterday he's a lefty
00:29:55starting now to do some extra
00:29:57work he wasn't by himself also
00:30:00out there with him was Will
00:30:01Benson doing a lot of the same
00:30:02things and even though he was in
00:30:04the lineup last night Matt
00:30:06McLean and once again the idea
00:30:11of bunting and the whole reason
00:30:14why it's such a good drill to do
00:30:18is because in order for you to
00:30:20bunt you kind of have to catch
00:30:22the ball if you will or you have
00:30:24to let the ball get to you a lot
00:30:26of times when hitters don't have
00:30:29their timing they're so far out
00:30:31in front say all the time man I'm
00:30:33not seeing the ball deep I'm not
00:30:35seeing the ball deep when you
00:30:36bunt you see the ball deep so
00:30:39regardless if you go out there and
00:30:41employ a bunt or not it's still
00:30:43good to let yourself see that ball
00:30:45travel and keep and maintain your
00:30:48balance first three two count for
00:30:53Malley today he walked McLean the
00:30:57first time he later scored big
00:31:00lead for Hayes pickoff play nearly
00:31:03the ball he gets away got it right
00:31:04on the helmet oh great glove by a
00:31:07rise and hey slow to get up he's
00:31:12got that hand clutched doubled over
00:31:15here comes athletic trainer Sean
00:31:17of the Queenie Hayes tensing that
00:31:22right hand this was a design play
00:31:30and Louisa Rice I think his foot is
00:31:34in front of that bag and that's
00:31:38where keep Ryan Hayes his hand
00:31:39hit and the umpires are going to
00:31:41conference the Reds just got
00:31:43burned on something similar on a
00:31:45caught stealing what that McLean
00:31:47was deemed to have interfered
00:31:49that's what first broke the Reds
00:31:51errorless streak they did not
00:31:55change the interference but
00:31:56change the scoring from an error
00:31:58now his foot was obviously in front
00:32:00of the bag the question is did the
00:32:02throw take him to that area or was
00:32:06he set up there out is confirmed as
00:32:09the signal well the throat took Matt
00:32:11McLean there and it was deemed to
00:32:13be interference you have to give a
00:32:16lane you do give you have to give
00:32:17him a lane but if the throw takes
00:32:19you into that lane which is what
00:32:23happened right there it's illegal
00:32:27play pick off goes one for pay off
00:32:34bounces home Valley is spiked at
00:32:37least three pitches so far that's
00:32:42already a third walk to have been
00:32:43drawn by McLean who now shares the
00:32:45team lead and walks drawn he's a
00:32:51board for Ellie de la Cruz who went
00:32:54down looking at a foreseen fastball I
00:32:59have to imagine he'll be a little
00:33:00more aggressive this time around
00:33:02Chapman on the grass at third off
00:33:04the line.
00:33:24two and oh not many pitchers attack
00:33:32de la Cruz like this a lot try to
00:33:35pitch him backwards back to back
00:33:36fastball misses the cutter is a
00:33:40three and oh here's another walk
00:33:56back to back three passes that's
00:33:59four issued by Malley reds have
00:34:01two on for Sal Stewart you
00:34:04mentioned the top hand referenced
00:34:06by Tito Francona Jim Day what did the
00:34:08skipper say well he said basically
00:34:12intimating that you you don't hear
00:34:14much about the top hand anymore in
00:34:16an era where you talk about launch
00:34:18ankle he loved the fact that he has
00:34:21such a good top hand had he been
00:34:24swinging for the so-called launch
00:34:26ankle swing he would have swung and
00:34:29missed but his top hand on that
00:34:32swings it flat even though it's up
00:34:34and out of the zone and Tito said
00:34:37listen I'm old school I love that
00:34:41driven right field the first career
00:34:46multi home run game for Sal
00:34:48Stewart he is two for two with a
00:34:51pair of three run bombs I don't
00:35:00know if you can get any more hot
00:35:02than what Sal Stewart is right
00:35:04right now it is such a relaxed
00:35:10mature approach and he is dominating
00:35:16the baseball four of his homers
00:35:21have gone opposite way that is the
00:35:23most in the majors when you have
00:35:26confidence that you can hit the
00:35:27ball the other way you're not
00:35:28worried about the ball on the
00:35:29inside part of the plate don't try
00:35:32try to pull the ball to create your
00:35:33power Sal Stewart has just been on
00:35:37fire another fastball elevated in
00:35:41the strike zone but out over the
00:35:43plate to allow Sal to get his arms
00:35:45extended Suarez to short and it
00:35:49kicks on Adamus I would imagine
00:35:53that's another base hit on his return
00:36:00to face the Reds for the first time it
00:36:04has been historically rough for Tyler
00:36:07Malley the three homers allowed tie a
00:36:09career high the four walks issued are
00:36:12one off his career high the Reds have a
00:36:14touchdown on the board and he's still
00:36:16not out of the second inning well the
00:36:19boys certainly came out aggressive we
00:36:22talked about being able to hit the
00:36:24fastball and the fact that they were
00:36:27going to see a lot of fastballs not a
00:36:29lot of success but today my goodness
00:36:34the boys are letting it eat Sal
00:36:39Stewart going right to hitting coach
00:36:41Chris Vileka for the hug here's the
00:36:44high fastball home run in yesterday's
00:36:47game and then today not so high with
00:36:50Tyler Malley with a couple fastballs
00:36:52out over the plate this is the first
00:36:55one and this is the second one Spencer
00:37:00Steer so one pitch first time
00:37:04comebacker that ricocheted off Malley
00:37:13Steers homer twice in his last three
00:37:15games entering today upstairs miss
00:37:52one two strong come out red showing some
00:37:58power here Lark flexing their muscles
00:38:02south steward has just been on fire to
00:38:05home runs today and given all kind of
00:38:07love to his hitting coach Chris
00:38:09Vileka match their biggest run
00:38:18scoring output in a game on the year
00:38:20six driven in on two swings by Sal
00:38:23Stewart so rent louder stake to a
00:38:26large lead again second time through
00:38:28he gets strike one on Willie Adamas
00:38:33Adamas struck out swinging his first
00:38:35time the Reds believe that Adamas
00:38:56is a heavy pull guy look at how tight
00:38:58they're playing that five six hole
00:39:00Elliott David Cruz and key Brian
00:39:02Haynes he's got a swing he's kind
00:39:04of out and around the ball when he
00:39:05hits the ball with any kind of
00:39:06velocity most of the times it is to
00:39:08left field so yeah when he pulls
00:39:12the ball and he pulls it on the
00:39:13ground he does have a tendency to
00:39:15hit it in that five six hole it's
00:39:18one of the more aggressive
00:39:19alignments we've seen on the reds
00:39:22infield Adamas pops it up longer
00:39:24track for Stevenson and Stewart
00:39:31Jim Day there has been some
00:39:33competitive influence on infield
00:39:36defense from the platinum glover
00:39:38key Brian Hayes yes there has it
00:39:41goes back to spring training in
00:39:43which Ellie de la Cruz was basically
00:39:46accepting the challenge of they had
00:39:48a daily competition to who could
00:39:50make the least amount of mistakes
00:39:52now you can see the improvement in
00:39:55Ellie whether as another strikeout
00:39:58for louder and pretty bold of Ellie
00:40:03to challenge one of the best if not
00:40:04the best glove in the league but it
00:40:07helped them defensively and Matt
00:40:09McClain has also sung the praises of
00:40:12key Brian Hayes and the influence
00:40:14that he has had on him he simply
00:40:17says he sets our identity as an
00:40:19infield we all want to be that at
00:40:21our own position he talks about his
00:40:23pre-pitch how amazing that is Barry
00:40:25can was great at that as well he
00:40:27hasn't mapped out where he's supposed
00:40:29to go the ball's going here the
00:40:32pitch is going here I've got to be
00:40:33here he's got it all pre-pitch
00:40:35figured out and he said whether or
00:40:37not he knows it I've learned a
00:40:38tremendous amount off of him
00:40:40watching him is amazing so he has
00:40:43people have been feeding off of
00:40:45him in the infield and perhaps
00:40:46the Reds are getting better
00:40:47because of it well that's the type
00:40:50of influence you expect to have
00:40:52from a veteran player a veteran
00:40:56player but still a young man rise
00:41:01to center to down that competition
00:41:05specifically left side with Hayes
00:41:08and Dela Cruz it feels like the best
00:41:11start that Ellie's had to the bigs
00:41:13in every way what are you seeing
00:41:15from him defensively well I feel
00:41:18like first of all positioning is
00:41:21important I feel like Freddie
00:41:22Benavidez needs to get a lot of
00:41:25credit because he puts a lot of
00:41:26work in with these guys from the
00:41:29physical to the mental preparation
00:41:31he just does a fantastic job and he
00:41:34works the guys now he also expects
00:41:37them to be perfect obviously
00:41:41accepting that we're going to make
00:41:42physical mistakes but the mental
00:41:45mistakes the lack of preparation
00:41:47is where Freddie really kind of
00:41:49hones in on and he's done a
00:41:50really masterful job of working
00:41:52with these guys and of course you've
00:41:54got the platinum dub by third base
00:41:56he influences everyone including
00:41:58L.A. Dan LaCruz
00:42:06at Big Sandy Superstore I looked at my
00:42:10future career and didn't know if this
00:42:11was possible and then hopefully kids
00:42:14seeing three black outfielders out
00:42:16there to end the game on the big
00:42:18league team is inspiring to them so
00:42:20if we can inspire one kid it'll mean
00:42:22a lot we did the little spider-man
00:42:24like oh you you you and we were all
00:42:26saying so it was really cool it was
00:42:28really cool moment just to share
00:42:29with them too and be out there
00:42:30together and they're talking about
00:42:33last night's game at the end it was
00:42:36certainly not lost on them as
00:42:37Heinz was one of those steps in and
00:42:39here's that reaction after the game
00:42:42and we've heard it so many times
00:42:44over the years of just turning on
00:42:47the television or coming to a game
00:42:49and seeing someone that looks like
00:42:51you and it inspires you and on this
00:42:53Jackie Robinson day they were asked
00:42:56about it those guys went to the urban
00:42:58youth academy earlier today along
00:42:59with keep Ryan Hayes as well and
00:43:01they were asked about that moment
00:43:03last night and it was not lost on
00:43:04them the value of representation
00:43:12and Reese Hines and company knowing
00:43:14the spider-man mean to all together
00:43:21yeah this is what's great going out
00:43:23to the youth academy and spending
00:43:24time with the kids and letting them
00:43:27touch and feel and interact so
00:43:31important the Reds have done such
00:43:33a nice job with that first of all
00:43:35having the youth academy but it's
00:43:38really important to the Castellini
00:43:39family to really integrate this team
00:43:44and these players into the communities
00:43:46and give back that youth academy is
00:43:50awesome Heinz strikes out on the
00:43:56slider Tyler Stevenson struck out
00:44:06swinging his first time check swing
00:44:18that's a strike so Heinz by the way
00:44:22last night saw 14 pitches that's
00:44:26now what eight more today so he has
00:44:28seen twenty two pitches in two
00:44:31games back in the big leagues I'm
00:44:33not including the cutter that's 87
00:44:36as a fastball I consider that more
00:44:37a hard breaking ball he's seen one
00:44:39fastball yeah one well the book is
00:44:43out look at this success challenging
00:44:46the call ball ABS powered by T-Mobile
00:44:55strike calls overturn pitches a
00:44:57strike San Francisco has two
00:44:59challenges remaining but that's also
00:45:01part of why he has to be given an
00:45:04extended run right to be fair yeah
00:45:07he's not going to see fastball soon
00:45:09he's going to have to learn to hit
00:45:11the breaking ball be disciplined
00:45:13enough to hit the breaking ball
00:45:14it's not that he can't hit the
00:45:16breaking ball it's that breaking
00:45:18balls at this level are just
00:45:19better they make fewer mistakes
00:45:22pitchers make fewer mistakes at the
00:45:24big league level than they do with
00:45:25the minor leagues and Reese Hines
00:45:27is kind of really dominating the
00:45:30minor leagues there's really
00:45:31nothing else for him to prove at the
00:45:32minor league level the question is
00:45:35can you prove that you can
00:45:36consistently compete at the big
00:45:39league level against big league
00:45:41pitching and the only way you're
00:45:43going to find that out is to give
00:45:45him the opportunity to go out
00:45:46there and compete he did not go on
00:45:49appeal Stevenson works a walk so
00:45:52Malley is now tied his career high
00:45:54that's five walks he is issued here
00:45:57today and the fact that Reese Hines
00:46:01might know that he's going to get in
00:46:03near everyday shot is really going to
00:46:07help him when you're a young player
00:46:09and you're trying to establish
00:46:10yourself looking over your shoulder
00:46:12or worrying about striking out or
00:46:14going over and then am I going to
00:46:16be in the lineup am I going to be
00:46:17sent down I think this time is
00:46:19different and I think it's going to
00:46:20make a difference on him mentally
00:46:22we'll see over the long haul but
00:46:24definitely going to give him that
00:46:26shot this time I believe that's a
00:46:29great point J.D. I agree with you
00:46:33topped foul it just allows you to
00:46:36exhale well you know you don't
00:46:38want to go home leave the
00:46:40ballpark thinking did I do enough
00:46:44to be in the lineup tomorrow right
00:46:47and the fact that you're thinking
00:46:50about that takes away all the
00:46:52mental energy and thinking of
00:46:54what I need to do to compete what
00:46:56did I do today that I need to do
00:46:59better tomorrow what were the
00:47:01mistakes I made today that I need
00:47:03to sure up tomorrow who's
00:47:05pitching tomorrow what is my
00:47:07approach going to be to this guy
00:47:08listen the preparation for the
00:47:10game does not start on the day
00:47:13of the game he starts the day
00:47:14prior or from pitchers four days
00:47:17prior right or you're starting
00:47:19pitching so it's not like you
00:47:22know and then if you have all
00:47:23this mental energy when you're
00:47:25concerned with did I do enough
00:47:27it just turns negative because
00:47:29now you start questioning
00:47:31everything you know did I hustle
00:47:33enough did I run out a fly ball
00:47:35did I feel my ground ball well
00:47:37enough all that negative energy
00:47:40energy is wasted energy key
00:47:43Brian Hayes straightaway
00:47:44center Gilbert and steep retreat
00:47:46and he's got it a long fly ball
00:47:49out it was hit hard you have a
00:47:54stat cast up in your tablet 1 0 3
00:47:57off the bat that was a slider and
00:48:03he hit it hard unfortunately to
00:48:06you're the biggest part of the
00:48:06yard two down top of the order
00:48:13Friedel who has singled up the
00:48:15middle as a sacrifice and a run
00:48:17score Chapman on the grass off
00:48:20the line in third roll to second
00:48:24arrives Stevenson stranded
00:48:38Elk and Elk injury report last
00:48:40night Emilio Pagan in the ninth
00:48:42inning felt his hamstring get
00:48:44tight earlier in the ending and
00:48:45then the final pitch of the game
00:48:47you can see him come up wincing
00:48:51his hamstring actually grabbed at
00:48:53him he said it never felt any
00:48:55snapping whatsoever it was very
00:48:57concerning at the time even
00:48:59though he recorded the final out
00:49:01for the save now after the game
00:49:03he met with the doctors good news
00:49:05no bruising there was no pain it
00:49:08was tight only he came in today
00:49:10and again just tightness went out
00:49:14to work on the field went through
00:49:15all the rigors tested hard checked
00:49:18out okay now whether he pitches
00:49:21tonight probably in question
00:49:23they're going to want him to
00:49:24throw off the mound tomorrow but
00:49:26the Reds dodged a very big
00:49:28bullet in fact they dodged two
00:49:29bullets last night and Pagan
00:49:32used that exact turn of phrase
00:49:34he says Devers fouls back strike
00:49:36to Jim what about Nick Lodolo
00:49:39Jose Trevino Trevino again
00:49:42they're progressing in very
00:49:43slowly with the back he might
00:49:45possibly could get another
00:49:48epidural injection in there
00:49:50Lodolo came through his side
00:49:52session well they're hoping to
00:49:55do an up down in Minneapolis on
00:49:56Friday if that goes well then a
00:49:58three inning up down in Tampa on
00:50:01this upcoming road trip but that
00:50:02other bullet that they dodged
00:50:05sent to left steer was Brady
00:50:08singer left the game last night
00:50:11taken one off of his foot now he
00:50:14was pitching brilliantly and
00:50:15efficiently probably would have
00:50:17gone back out there for the
00:50:18seventh inning great news on this
00:50:20front he came in with no swelling
00:50:23today which is almost shocking
00:50:26it's just a contusion he did not
00:50:28have a limp he went through all the
00:50:29pregame or post day rigors today
00:50:32and he checked out fine that's
00:50:36great news thank you Jim able to
00:50:39give his team six innings got his
00:50:41first victory of the year on just
00:50:43seventy-five pitches yeah really
00:50:45good and the good news also on
00:50:50those fronts is singer pitched well
00:50:52and Pagan said he was throwing as
00:50:55well as he has all season long
00:50:57before that hamstring caught on
00:51:00him so actually two good signs on
00:51:03top of it Chapman is singled and
00:51:07scored if Pagan had struggled some
00:51:09throwing strikes his two outings
00:51:10before and he was filling up the
00:51:12zone in his outing yesterday and
00:51:17his velocity was up and in fact he
00:51:19said that might be part of the
00:51:21reason that his hamstring tightened
00:51:22up because he was just simply
00:51:24throwing harder and working harder
00:51:26backhand table crews longer throw
00:51:28nice love to see Ellie de la Cruz
00:51:38move to his left and right just
00:51:41really solid plants that back foot
00:51:44and then lets it eat
00:52:00with Ellie on defense I think we
00:52:03saw some of it last year
00:52:05particularly before the leg injury
00:52:07I almost separate his twenty twenty
00:52:09five into that first eight weeks
00:52:12when he was pretty gangbusters and
00:52:15then after the leg injuries
00:52:16arrived that internal clock he can
00:52:19throw it at ninety nine but he puts
00:52:23as much mustard on it as it needs
00:52:25for that runner that's right that's
00:52:28right John you know we talk about
00:52:30fielding ground balls you want to
00:52:32try to be consistent regardless of
00:52:35a guy runs a four flat or five
00:52:37flat to first base you want to
00:52:39kind of do it the same way you
00:52:41can always deviate you can always
00:52:43throw the ball a little bit harder
00:52:44but it's about you getting your
00:52:45feet in position and your body in
00:52:47position after you field the ground
00:52:49ball to throw the ball to first
00:52:50base so Ellie I feel like it's done
00:52:53a much better job with that and
00:52:55once again I have to go back to
00:52:56Freddie Benavides because these
00:52:58are the type of messages that he's
00:52:59sending and sharing with these
00:53:01guys and expecting them to go out
00:53:02there and execute Hines deep
00:53:04gap one two three for louder the
00:53:10Reds have the power so Stuart has
00:53:13slugged a pair could he add on 7 2
00:53:22Reds an explosive start crooked
00:53:28numbers in the first two innings
00:53:30scoreless in the third Matt
00:53:31McLean has walked twice scored
00:53:46twice watches a strike from Malley
00:53:59while Malley struggled lifetime
00:54:01in this ballpark Matt McLean's
00:54:05power surges here two thirds of
00:54:09his homers have come in Cincinnati
00:54:12upstairs cutter I do feel like
00:54:17that's a spot teams are starting
00:54:18to pitch to McLean more that
00:54:20upper third of the zone in I'm
00:54:22gonna tell you what anything in
00:54:24when Matt is on fire he's gonna
00:54:27be trouble for the pitchers he has
00:54:31a real good ability to get to the
00:54:33ball on the inside part of the
00:54:34plate that slider up and away or
00:54:38that fastball up and away right
00:54:39there that's been his kryptonite
00:54:41the last few years but up and in
00:54:44when he's right it's a hot zone
00:54:50elite table crews walked and
00:54:52scored his last time he's also
00:54:53struck out looking no go on a
00:54:56peel as he checks on the splinter
00:55:00Malley first couple of times when
00:55:02Adam with fastballs early
00:55:04finished him with a fastball in
00:55:06the first and when at him is
00:55:14perhaps in and of itself miss
00:55:16spoken because he was out of the
00:55:19zone that last day he just was
00:55:21close the pitch tight he's clearly
00:55:24being very careful against David
00:55:27Cruz strike.
00:55:59O'Malley has had rougher run scoring
00:56:02games against but in terms of earned runs there's only been one worse outing in his career that came in
00:56:10the
00:56:10later May 2022 against the Cubs
00:56:15surrendered eight earned runs that day
00:56:18Reds lost 11 of 4
00:56:24playoff is in the air deep center field
00:56:30crushed off the top of the batter's eye
00:56:38and enormous homer clobbered in 109 stat
00:56:43cast says four hundred and forty two
00:56:46feet on Jackie Robinson day.
00:56:50I'm just sitting here and just smiling.
00:56:54See the replay of this when you hit the
00:56:56ball in the center field normally
00:56:58you get out of the box that you're
00:57:00like well I'm not really sure.
00:57:02Wait till you see the replay in
00:57:04Ellie De La Cruz when he hits this
00:57:05ball to center field.
00:57:10Yeah no doubt.
00:57:15So now Sal Stewart it was gone deep
00:57:17twice.
00:57:18He's knocked in six.
00:57:20Now's back strike one.
00:57:22Our Liberty Mutual insurance field
00:57:25coverage the history for Stewart.
00:57:28First Reds rookie multiple three run homers
00:57:31in a game.
00:57:38He's the third youngest red to knock
00:57:40in a half dozen or more.
00:57:41The second red going back is the
00:57:43records due to 1910.
00:57:45To have six or more ribbies in the
00:57:47first two innings of a game.
00:57:54And I think what you're going to see
00:57:56from pitchers are and what you're
00:57:58going to have to do is you're going
00:57:59to have to start throwing Sal
00:58:01Stewart in.
00:58:03Because the Robbie Ray home run
00:58:05yesterday up and away the Malley
00:58:08home run early away last at bat
00:58:13away.
00:58:17You can see the adjustment right
00:58:19there.
00:58:20A couple foul balls on balls on
00:58:22the inner half of the plate.
00:58:24That's what you're going to have to
00:58:25do.
00:58:29You can get to that one too now.
00:58:38Top to Chapman.
00:58:43Tired for the first time tonight.
00:58:45That's a great game.
00:58:47Such a beautiful swing by Ellie
00:58:49De La Cruz.
00:58:51Three two looking for a fastball
00:58:53got a fastball and absolutely
00:58:55destroyed.
00:59:07We were talking about John before
00:59:10the game about how we struggled
00:59:12hitting velocity or hitting
00:59:14fastball forcing fastballs.
00:59:17It'll be really interesting to see
00:59:19what those numbers look like after
00:59:20this game today because there
00:59:23have been some balls that have
00:59:24been pummeled.
00:59:28Over two on Suarez who is homered
00:59:30has a base hit that skipped on
00:59:32the shortstop Adama's Reds entered
00:59:35the game 2 0 3 against four
00:59:37seamers.
00:59:38That was third worst in the majors
00:59:40for what it's worth.
00:59:41The worst team in the majors right
00:59:43now hitting four seamers is the
00:59:45Yankees.
00:59:46I'm not sure that's going to hold
00:59:47up.
00:59:48I'm not sure that the Reds 2 0 3 is
00:59:50going to hold up.
00:59:54Oh Suarez chips this to left and it
00:59:57gets down for a hit.
00:59:58He just went out.
