00:00:00Good role players and sometimes this is a great opportunity continues presented by State Farm on a very warm night in Dallas, Texas second game of our doubleheader the Mavericks hosting the New York Knicks and the house the dirt built in need of some repairs right now. It's been a rough start to the season for the Mavericks and their fans. Meanwhile speaking of fans good news for these young fans number 11 the former Mav back in the lineup.
00:00:30That's right Jalen Brunson the Knicks NBA all NBA point guard returns after missing the past two games with a sprained ankle. Meanwhile for the Mavericks PJ Washington and his team shorthanded again especially now with news that Cooper flag is going to miss his first game of his rookie season. He is out with an illness and good evening everyone with Richard Jefferson and Tim Legler Mike Green on hand George Sedano with us as well for the Knicks they've been almost unbeatable at home but have yet to win a road game.
00:00:590-4 so far their chances have increased to winning now that Jalen Brunson's back and he's ruling the court brought to you by Burger King our subject. He does so many things well. What's your favorite thing about his game Richard?
00:01:12Oh well that's tough. When we start I want to talk about his intangibles. His toughness. How clutch he is. But more importantly if you look at his skill set it's his ability to stop and start.
00:01:21He has the ability to be efficient driving into that paint knocking down big shots over trees and trust me no one benefits more from his skill set than his partner Carl Anthony Towns.
00:01:32Special number from Brunson of course played his first four years in Dallas. Meanwhile for the Mavericks we just received word they're so so shorthanded that Jason Kidd is going to be a player coach tonight. He's going to suit up and play in the game for the first time since he retired in 2013.
00:01:46It would be nice to see but clearly they're short handed legs. But nights like this there's a lot of really good role players on this Mavericks team. This is a golden opportunity for them.
00:01:56Well we joke about Jason Kidd playing because he's down two all-stars and the number one pick in the draft. Look times are tough offensively for this team. But it also means expanded opportunities for other guys. Brandon Williams will be at the top of that list. Averaging just under 15 points a game in his last five. He is an explosive talent. And also Max Christie. He will get additional opportunities to shoot the basketball as well tonight. That's what Jason Kidd is going to be counting on.
00:02:21They'll have more minutes. They'll have more shots. They play with reckless abandonment. Meanwhile our starting lineups are delivered by Taco Bell. Landry Schammett starting once again. OGN and OB still out for perhaps another couple of weeks with a hamstring injury.
00:02:38But Brunson does return. Williams of course and Christie that likes talked about. Derek Lively back in the lineup. He missed the last game.
00:02:45P.J. Washington continues to have a good solid season so far for these Mavericks.
00:02:50Though we're set to go. And despite all the problems. All the drama. All the injuries. This Maverick team is. They've stuck together. And they play hard every night.
00:03:01Well that's half the battle. If you can play hard and keep your 14 blocks in. If you get your stars back. Then everything starts to roll.
00:03:09They've had a bunch of close losses. Not been able to finish. Obviously with key guys out.
00:03:14Washington is guarding Carl Anthony Towns.
00:03:17Schammett right back to Towns. Nice give and go. Schammett the layup. And a foul.
00:03:22Landry Schammett who's done an excellent job both off the bench and some starting assignments as well.
00:03:28Talked about increased opportunities tonight for some of the Mavericks guards.
00:03:31Landry Schammett has found himself with Expanded Roll this year with Mike Brown.
00:03:36And this is one of the things he was talking about before the game. Very hard with his off ball cuts. And that time got rewarded.
00:03:44Last Friday he had the game of his life. One he will soon not forget. Had a 36 point off the bench performance for the Knicks.
00:03:51And a victory against the Heat. And the entire Madison Square Garden crowd was chanting his name.
00:03:57Here's Williams. He is quite the speedster.
00:04:00Backs up. He's got Carl Anthony Towns on him. Goes right at the big man. Can't get it. Fight for the rebound.
00:04:07Williams comes out of it. Smallest guy out there. Clay Thompson lines it up. That won't go. Fight for the rebound.
00:04:13Williams almost had us another. Lively has it blocked by Robinson.
00:04:16And here comes Bridges.
00:04:20Mikael Bridges up to Towns. Towns the three-pointer.
00:04:23They're well short. And Christie will bring it up.
00:04:29Mavericks four wins. Three of them have come at home.
00:04:32They're three and seven here at the American Airlines Center.
00:04:36Washington goes inside.
00:04:38Little jump hook won't go. Robinson the rebound.
00:04:42Knicks meanwhile again.
00:04:44Only four road games.
00:04:45This is the second game of a five-game road trip.
00:04:47But still looking for that first win as Bridges able to connect.
00:04:50And that's one of the things that Bridges does when we had an opportunity to talk to coach Mike Brown.
00:04:55He talks about when he finally got to have his eyes on him and coaching.
00:04:59He sees his versatility.
00:05:00The ability to defend. Pull up. Does so many things.
00:05:03He's really a glue player for him.
00:05:05But so much more than that.
00:05:07Williams guarded by Brunson.
00:05:10Williams super quick but he has struggled from three.
00:05:12Thompson back in the starting lineup.
00:05:15Finds Brandon Williams.
00:05:16Over to P.J. Washington.
00:05:18Washington goes right at Shamit.
00:05:19Too strong. Wigely offensive rebound.
00:05:22And a whistle and a foul on the board.
00:05:24So it'll be Mavs side out as Bridges picks up his first.
00:05:27The activity level has been there for Dallas offensively.
00:05:29You're getting good looks.
00:05:31You've gotten a couple of extra opportunities on the offensive glass.
00:05:34They just have not been able to get one to go here early.
00:05:37Want to take the lid off this place.
00:05:39Let some people sit down too, Mike.
00:05:40I know your favorite thing.
00:05:41That's a tradition in some arenas.
00:05:44Back door.
00:05:46Well detected by the next kickball so they'll reset the shot clock.
00:05:49The Mavericks offense has been a problem with, again, Anthony Davis only playing a handful of games.
00:05:55They're the 29th rated offense in the NBA.
00:05:58They've done a solid job defensively, despite the fact that Davis has missed so much.
00:06:07Williams looking.
00:06:07Shot clock at five.
00:06:08Gets in the paint.
00:06:09Short shot.
00:06:10Won't go.
00:06:10But they call an offensive foul on Williams.
00:06:13He's got two quick ones.
00:06:15The last thing Jason can need is that some of these guys get in foul trouble as Bridges took a shot.
00:06:21Tough to see it from here.
00:06:23It looks like potentially maybe caught him with an elbow on the way up.
00:06:27Knicks are looking for perhaps a review for a flagrant.
00:06:30Yeah.
00:06:31Bridges checking for blood and for teeth.
00:06:32Counting those teeth.
00:06:33He caught an elbow, I'm guessing, as Brandon Williams is leaving the ground right there.
00:06:38No, that's not, to me, that's a natural basketball shooting motion.
00:06:43That's a natural basketball shooting motion.
00:06:46There was nothing that he did.
00:06:46It's a natural basketball shooting motion, but that's been called since the beginning of time.
00:06:51No, that's not.
00:06:52They called that all the time.
00:06:54You catch a guy with your off elbow going off.
00:06:56It looked like he was.
00:06:57Especially the player reacts like that.
00:06:58I would love to see the replay again.
00:07:00It looks like it was his shoulder more than it was his elbow.
00:07:03And again, we only had a brief look.
00:07:09Okay, so that's his shoulder.
00:07:10That's not his elbow.
00:07:11His elbow was in front of his face.
00:07:12He was in front of his face, but he was in contact to the face.
00:07:14He was just a common foul.
00:07:15That's not.
00:07:16That's been a natural at the elbow by the offensive player.
00:07:18But the offensive foul will stand.
00:07:20Not a player, but that's a foul.
00:07:21That's going to get called.
00:07:22So you could just put your face on everybody's chest and it's now a foul?
00:07:28Look.
00:07:28Okay.
00:07:29All I'm telling you is that call is called repeatedly.
00:07:34If you're going up for a shot and you're off hand or the hand closest to the defender,
00:07:38your elbow shoulder catches a guy under the chin.
00:07:41If the guy sells it the way that Mikael Bridges is able to sell.
00:07:44So he sold it.
00:07:45So the selling means that it was the foul.
00:07:47Well, that matters.
00:07:48That matters.
00:07:49We both know that.
00:07:50All right.
00:07:50I disagree with you.
00:07:52Man, I love this.
00:07:53Two minutes into the game, you guys are fighting.
00:07:56As Richard would have been the first guy begging for that call if he got hit in the chops with an elbow.
00:08:02That's not what I said.
00:08:03Javon goes inside.
00:08:04Leans in.
00:08:04Shot blocked by Lively.
00:08:06Towns picks up the loose ball.
00:08:07His jumper in and out.
00:08:10And here's D'Angelo Russell.
00:08:12Russell came in after Williams picked up his second.
00:08:14Russell's had an up and down start to his Mavics career.
00:08:18He's had some big games.
00:08:19He knocks down his first shot.
00:08:20And the fans can sit down.
00:08:22Bridges.
00:08:30Good defense from Lively and forces a turnover.
00:08:34Russell comes the other way.
00:08:35Gets inside.
00:08:36Layup is good for Christie.
00:08:39That was a good delivery by Russell in the open floor.
00:08:42He had two options.
00:08:43I think he made the right decision.
00:08:45Allow Christie to get to the rim before that health defender could get there.
00:08:48Bridges felt the contact on Thompson who doesn't like the call.
00:08:51But Thompson picks up his first.
00:08:54And two free throws for Bridges.
00:08:55Do want to go back to that, though.
00:08:57Because it's interesting how that is called, that play.
00:09:00Because if a defensive player does stick his face into the normal shooting motion of a player,
00:09:05that should not be an offensive foul.
00:09:07You know what, Mike?
00:09:07This is the first time that we have agreed since we have known each other.
00:09:11And so what I am saying as Bridges knocks down the free throw, it's different if you lead with an elbow.
00:09:15It's different if your off arm gets it.
00:09:17It's literally a shoulder.
00:09:19Watch this.
00:09:19I'm going up.
00:09:20My arms are in.
00:09:21So how can a player shoot?
00:09:23He's even going away from the basket there.
00:09:25He's not going towards.
00:09:25And I actually agree with you that I don't want it to see at home.
00:09:29So we're three for three.
00:09:30What I'm saying to you is, it's always called if a guy's head jerks back and then they check it and there's contact.
00:09:36Most of the time, that's called an offensive foul.
00:09:39And I think sometimes it's a disservice to the defense or to the offense, excuse me.
00:09:45It's P.J. Washington knocks down a three.
00:09:47And the Mavericks take a two-point lead.
00:09:53Christy guarding Brunson.
00:09:55Christy's a good young defensive player.
00:09:57And as Brunson's first shot can't get it, Bridges' offensive rebound.
00:10:05Brunson on the drive.
00:10:06Gets in off the glass.
00:10:07Blocked by Lively.
00:10:09That's two projections already.
00:10:12Russell can't hit that long rebound out to Towns.
00:10:15That was a difficult block by Lively to block a floater from as far away as he was.
00:10:20And Brunson released that ball.
00:10:22Incredible timing.
00:10:23Towns wanted some contact.
00:10:26Instead, a good interior defense again.
00:10:28Washington sidestep blocked by Bridges.
00:10:32Some excellent defensive plays here in the opening minutes.
00:10:36Brunson trying to draw a foul on Washington.
00:10:38Klay Thompson the other way.
00:10:40His jumper's good.
00:10:42Another three.
00:10:44And a nice spurt here from the Mavericks.
00:10:46Has the crowd a little fired up and forces Mike Brown to call timeout.
00:10:49Well, Klay Thompson and the Mavericks after trailing by five.
00:10:54Quickly turning around.
00:10:55They're up five.
00:10:56The NBA on ESPN is presented all season long by State Farm.
00:11:04Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.
00:11:07And in part by Walmart Black Friday deals.
00:11:10Shop online November 25th through the 30th.
00:11:12For tonight's Star Watch brought to you by Co-Pilot by Microsoft.
00:11:16Karl-Anthony Towns, a strong start.
00:11:18Third in the NBA in rebounding.
00:11:20And tied for first in double-doubles.
00:11:22An excellent start to the season.
00:11:23Almost a Knick record.
00:11:25As Towns beat his second year with the Knicks.
00:11:27With more on Karl-Anthony Towns.
00:11:30Let's go to George.
00:11:31Thanks, Mike.
00:11:32With Mike Brown's new system as the first-year head coach of the New York Knicks.
00:11:36A lot of changes for Karl-Anthony Towns from the offensive end.
00:11:41Coach Brown wants him to play from five different spots.
00:11:45Where he's going to initiate his offense.
00:11:47Which, again, is a big adjustment for him.
00:11:50And he's had to get comfortable with it.
00:11:51It's been a bit of a struggle at first.
00:11:54But Towns is certainly easing into that.
00:11:57And when you see the way that Coach Mike Brown has coached him.
00:12:01I think that's the thing that they talk about the most between the two of them.
00:12:05Coach Brown said, look, I keep it 100 with him.
00:12:06I keep it real with him.
00:12:07And you know what?
00:12:08He's embraced the way that I've coached him.
00:12:10Which I certainly appreciate for a guy like that who's so important to the team.
00:12:14For this particular New York Knicks team, Mike.
00:12:17All right, George.
00:12:18Thompson misses that.
00:12:19Knicks come the other way.
00:12:21Of course, Towns is one of many adjusting.
00:12:23Most of this team the same from last year under Tom Thibodeau.
00:12:26And they had terrific success the last couple of years.
00:12:29Legs, is there that much of a difference in Mike Brown's system than what Tom Thibodeau ran?
00:12:35Well, I think in his perfect world, yes, for Mike Brown.
00:12:38And he said they're not there yet.
00:12:40But he absolutely wants a little bit more ball reversal, off-ball cutting,
00:12:45and just in general the pace of the next movement to be quicker in his offense.
00:12:50They're getting there.
00:12:51But he said he still thinks they can be much, much better.
00:12:54They were a good offensive team last year.
00:12:55I mean, let's not forget that.
00:12:58He just thinks there's more there to grab for their top guys, especially.
00:13:02Substitution, Najee Marshall comes in.
00:13:05Roshan Yavaselli also in for the Knicks.
00:13:10Christie's going to come out.
00:13:14Knicks have hit just 3 of 10 from the field.
00:13:17Christie sits.
00:13:18And the Mavericks just 4 of 13.
00:13:25Daniel Gafford checking in for the first time.
00:13:30Shamit fighting under the screen.
00:13:33Marshall against Josh Hart.
00:13:35First minutes off the bench.
00:13:37P.J. Washington, difficult shot.
00:13:38Well defended by Yavaselli.
00:13:40Towns cannot hit the 3.
00:13:48He's not shot the ball well from 3 on the road this year.
00:13:52He's going to get another look this time.
00:13:53Fakes, drives, kicks it back out to Josh Hart.
00:13:57Hart gets in the paint.
00:13:58Floater, that won't go.
00:13:59Washington, the rebound.
00:14:01Both teams shooting bricks right now.
00:14:02We've got a foul.
00:14:03He could have shot the 3 if he was going to shoot it that hard off the backboard.
00:14:06I agree.
00:14:07I was thinking he clearly didn't want that 3, but he actually ended up taking such a tough shot.
00:14:12He was going full speed and tries to release that thing from 10 feet.
00:14:16So tough to get touched on it.
00:14:17Bridges back in.
00:14:19This is a great play by Carl Anthony Towns.
00:14:21He tried to attack the closeout.
00:14:23He saw all the traffic.
00:14:24Josh Hart looked at it.
00:14:25He thought about it for a second.
00:14:26But it's his first look of the night.
00:14:28And I think he wanted to get something a little bit closer.
00:14:30But that is tough to put enough soft touch on a shot like that from that distance.
00:14:35And he got called for the foul.
00:14:36Now Washington kicks it out.
00:14:37Good ball movement.
00:14:38Leaving Russell wide open.
00:14:40But he can't hit.
00:14:42Two teams now combine 7 for 27.
00:14:46All right.
00:14:46This time takes the 3 and rattles it in.
00:14:48No hesitation there.
00:14:49That's why you take that first shot.
00:14:51You want the first floater, especially when you first come in the game.
00:14:54So for him, even that miss gives you a little bit more rhythm.
00:14:57Let's you tee it up a little bit more.
00:14:59Russell turns it over.
00:15:00What I like about this pass is look at the cross court.
00:15:03Brunson gets it over to Bridges.
00:15:05Then it's 1-2.
00:15:06That all is initiated there by Brunson.
00:15:10Seeing the late transition play.
00:15:14Brunson back here in Dallas.
00:15:17He was a fan favorite.
00:15:18First four years.
00:15:19And that sign is a Knicks free agent.
00:15:24This is fourth year already with the Knicks.
00:15:25And he has turned the franchise around.
00:15:29Five on the 24.
00:15:30Yavaselli.
00:15:31Good looking jumper there.
00:15:33He's been in and out of the rotation.
00:15:36It was a nice pickup in the offseason.
00:15:38But has yet to find his consistent rhythm.
00:15:40Marshall, wide open.
00:15:45Connects out of threes.
00:15:48Dallas is fourth made three.
00:15:50I mean, you talk about a welcome sight for Jason Kidd.
00:15:52This team only makes ten at night.
00:15:5429th in the league in made threes.
00:15:56They've already got four here in the first seven minutes.
00:15:59Brunson pulls up.
00:16:00Baseline jumper.
00:16:00It won't go.
00:16:01Hart trying to come up.
00:16:02But it cannot.
00:16:05Hardy's in the game.
00:16:06Throws it to Russell.
00:16:07Stolen by Hart.
00:16:08But Washington takes it right back.
00:16:11Marshall, wide open.
00:16:12Another three.
00:16:13But P.J. Washington involved in a lot of plays at both ends.
00:16:19Defense.
00:16:25Dallas is one of eight from two-point range.
00:16:29But five of nine from three.
00:16:31Yavaselli goes backdoor.
00:16:33And foul.
00:16:34They're going to call in the act of shooting.
00:16:35Not sure.
00:16:36Hardy.
00:16:36They're going to take it side out.
00:16:40And Najee Marshall knocking down a couple of them right here.
00:16:44And again, this is not a team that typically is going to hurt you from beyond the yard.
00:16:49But he hits one and there's nothing better.
00:16:52When you hit one and get that basketball in the very next possession, you're feeling it right now.
00:16:56And Dallas shooting the ball extremely well from outside by their standards.
00:17:00Marshall, I was in 11 points per game.
00:17:02That was a shot by their standards.
00:17:05It is what it is.
00:17:06That was a shot.
00:17:08I'm just going off the raw numbers, Richard.
00:17:10Oh, Carl Anthony Townsend goes down hard.
00:17:14Gafford moves a good rim projector.
00:17:17Didn't stand a chance there and a chance for a three-point play.
00:17:20Carl Anthony Townsend has had an outstanding start.
00:17:24I love some of his playmaking.
00:17:26But here, off of Brunson, we know he can shoot.
00:17:29Doesn't settle.
00:17:30But right there, Gafford is understanding why you have to cut him off on that right hand.
00:17:35Because he can finish with the best of them.
00:17:37That's just difficult.
00:17:40Off the 1-2.
00:17:42Yeah.
00:17:44I like big man on big man crime.
00:17:46I like it when big men...
00:17:47Don't dunk on the little guys.
00:17:48Dunk on the big fellas.
00:17:49Just to remind you of the old days.
00:17:51Yeah, the good old days.
00:17:55Townsend at the line.
00:17:56There's a lot of Knick fans in attendance.
00:17:58Townsend is a great free throw shooter.
00:18:01Misses that.
00:18:02He's been shooting 91% from the line.
00:18:05Washington lost a dribble.
00:18:11And a kickball.
00:18:17Kickball.
00:18:18See, now, that's a rule that drives me nuts.
00:18:22The player dribbles the ball off the defender's foot.
00:18:26Why is that a kickball?
00:18:27Now, if he sticks the foot out to try and kick it.
00:18:29But you're penalizing good defense.
00:18:32Yeah, I agree, Mike.
00:18:33And if you want to talk to Adam Silver...
00:18:36Bridges brings it up off the turnover.
00:18:41Deuce McBride right off the bench.
00:18:43Misses.
00:18:43Bridges had it.
00:18:44Lost it.
00:18:45But Hart there to pick it up.
00:18:46Brunson tries a three.
00:18:47That won't go.
00:18:49Knick just one of seven from three-point range.
00:18:53Mavericks by two.
00:18:54He's over three and a half remaining here in the opening quarter.
00:18:57Russell searching.
00:19:01Hardy.
00:19:02That three is good.
00:19:03He had a good game the other night.
00:19:05Hitting four three-pointers.
00:19:06Well, sometimes you take the lid off of it as a team.
00:19:09And now everybody's feeling it a little bit.
00:19:11But I think the Knicks right now are a little bit too collapsed in that paint.
00:19:14You're going to see Mike Brown make that adjustment.
00:19:16Because these shooters are getting far too much space to get comfortable.
00:19:20Mitchell Robinson hands off to Bridges.
00:19:22Bridges back to McBride.
00:19:23No hesitation on his three.
00:19:25And the draft continues from downtown.
00:19:28Here's Russell.
00:19:31Across the court.
00:19:33No hesitation.
00:19:34Hardy can't hit that one.
00:19:35Long rebound to Brunson.
00:19:36Do we feel like we can get better shots at any point in time than the last four or five we've just taken?
00:19:42Just a lot of threes.
00:19:44McBride gets in the paint.
00:19:47Bridges.
00:19:48Six on a 24.
00:19:54McBride's going to try again.
00:19:56Going to miss again.
00:19:59Nick shooting overall 30%.
00:20:01One of eight from three-point range.
00:20:04Part of it's good Maverick defense.
00:20:07Hardy.
00:20:08Not that time.
00:20:08Brunson a rebound.
00:20:09I think they're doing it just to bop me now at this point in time.
00:20:14And then Josh Hart draws the foul.
00:20:16They're going to say in the act of shooting.
00:20:17So free throws.
00:20:19And what has been a low scoring, poor shooting first quarter.
00:20:22I don't think Mike Brown expected this out of the Dallas Mavericks.
00:20:26Heating up from outside.
00:20:28ESPN Bet, the official sportsbook of ESPN on NBA TV tomorrow night.
00:20:34Spurs hosting the Hawks on Prime on Friday.
00:20:37Pacers and Cavs from Cleveland.
00:20:39Rockets host the Nuggets.
00:20:41A terrific matchup there.
00:20:42More on these games.
00:20:42Go to NBA.com or visit the NBA app.
00:20:47So Josh Hart will shoot free throws.
00:20:49We're at 219 remaining.
00:20:52Hart coming off the bench last year.
00:20:54Started every game he played.
00:20:5577 of them led the NBA minutes per game.
00:20:58And now he's accepted the role off the bench.
00:21:01And Mike Brown was telling us before the game how he's starting to learn how important Josh Hart is.
00:21:07He said he reminds him a little bit of Andre Iguodala from this perspective.
00:21:12He's a connector on the floor.
00:21:13The players and the team just seems to play better when he's on the floor.
00:21:17Well, you don't have many guards, especially his size, that will get as many offensive rebounds.
00:21:21That will do those little bitty things that get your team second chances.
00:21:25And he's not always looking to score.
00:21:27So he will get that offensive rebound, kick it out to the scores.
00:21:31Those are the things that bring a team together, having a player that is so selfless.
00:21:36Russell Elliott knocked away by Robinson.
00:21:41Last touch by the Mavericks, the rookie Moussa Cissé in the game.
00:21:50Mavericks by four as we hit the two-minute mark.
00:21:53Only by four despite awful shooting by the Knicks.
00:21:56Six of 20 overall.
00:21:58One of eight from three.
00:21:59Bridges finds some room.
00:22:03Turns, fakes his time and knocks it down.
00:22:11Marshall goes right at Jalen Brunson.
00:22:13Bridges trying to help out.
00:22:15Stripped down low.
00:22:15Marshall gets it back and scores.
00:22:17Good second effort from Marshall who thought he got hit.
00:22:19He was determined to get that up.
00:22:21It looked like, you know, he was surrounded by three players.
00:22:23Had a teammate open at the top of the key, but he realized he could pick that up and get one up the rim.
00:22:28Brunson nails the long three-pointer.
00:22:30A rare three to go down here in the first.
00:22:33And it's back to a one-point game.
00:22:36You don't see a lot of 22-21 first quarter scores lately.
00:22:40Not especially with the amount of free throws that are being shot.
00:22:46Cissé got his first career start the other night.
00:22:50Brunson knocks it loose.
00:22:51That's five turnovers for Dallas.
00:22:53That's been a problem for him this year.
00:22:56Brunson fires away.
00:22:58And that one will go.
00:22:59Mitchell Robinson grabs the offensive rebound.
00:23:02Brunson will try again.
00:23:04And that one's good.
00:23:05Jalen Brunson with a couple of threes to regain the lead.
00:23:08A couple things there.
00:23:09Jalen Brunson twice fights over the screen, ends up with this deal.
00:23:13And then you see what Mitchell Robinson does.
00:23:15Number one in the league in offensive rebounding.
00:23:17And he gave Jalen Brunson a second opportunity.
00:23:20Marshall tries to answer.
00:23:22Bridges the rebound.
00:23:29Marshall guarding Brunson.
00:23:32Eight on to 24.
00:23:37Nick's taking their time.
00:23:39Brunson makes his move.
00:23:40Gets inside.
00:23:40Trying to draw contact.
00:23:42He thought he got hit from behind.
00:23:44And Marshall grabs the rebound.
00:23:45Shot clock turned off.
00:23:46Knicks do have a foul to give.
00:23:50Russell back up top to Marshall.
00:23:53Again, a wide open look.
00:23:54That's good.
00:23:55Just what you're talking about, ladies, with 1.4 left here in the quarter.
00:23:58Mavericks are 7 of 14 from 3.
00:24:04They'd only lead by 1.
00:24:05Bridges placed it up.
00:24:07Good attempt.
00:24:08Almost went down.
00:24:10And that ends quarter number 1.
00:24:12Dallas needing the 3 ball.
00:24:14Well, we talked about their offensive struggles, but they are shooting it tonight from deep.
00:24:20And it's giving them an opportunity to take the lead here early.
00:24:23Najee Marshall on fire.
00:24:28The McHale Bridges of the New York Knicks.
00:24:31Looks like you guys had a little spurt there towards the end of the quarter to get within 1.
00:24:34What led that?
00:24:35Getting stops.
00:24:36This defense.
00:24:37And getting out after that.
00:24:38You guys are shooting only 36%.
00:24:40What do you make of your shot profile thus far?
00:24:42It's all right.
00:24:42We're fine.
00:24:43You know, the big is going to help and try to block things.
00:24:44And we're going to be better when we get to paint.
00:24:46But other than that, a few good looks.
00:24:47But, you know, we can't let no block shots.
00:24:49We can't give them no block shots.
00:24:50McHale, good luck.
00:24:51Yeah, no doubt.
00:24:52Mike.
00:24:53All right, George.
00:24:55Lively.
00:24:56Christie.
00:24:56Thompson.
00:24:58Williams.
00:24:59And Marshall out there for Dallas.
00:25:02Williams can't connect.
00:25:04Man, he's so quick and so fast, but he has really struggled from three-point range.
00:25:13Hart.
00:25:14Inside.
00:25:15Tough shot.
00:25:15Can't get it to go.
00:25:16Lively the rebound.
00:25:18Well defended by Marshall.
00:25:19Yavaselli and Clarkson.
00:25:22McBride and Hart.
00:25:24Four reserves.
00:25:25Alley up inside to Lively.
00:25:26Hooked out of bounds.
00:25:27Last touch by Lively.
00:25:29Good defense from Yavaselli.
00:25:30And I don't think Lively dove hard enough to go get that lob.
00:25:33I mean, after Yavaselli missed the steal, you got penetration right down the lane.
00:25:38Derek Lively's got to go up and get that basketball.
00:25:40That ball was not going to be gotten.
00:25:42He did not break hard toward it, is what I'm saying to you.
00:25:46If I'm a passer, I'm upset right there that he's not where he's supposed to be.
00:25:50As a lob catcher, that was not going to be caught.
00:25:53Clarkson can't hit the three.
00:25:55Thompson the rebound.
00:25:55Thompson's start of the season as a starter, then off the bench recently.
00:26:03And a reach and a hold.
00:26:05Josh Hart will pick up his second foul.
00:26:10You're lucky they're not showing that replay here, Likes.
00:26:13I wish they would.
00:26:14I wish they would.
00:26:16Christie gets inside with a left hand, well defended by Townes, altered that shot.
00:26:26And the Knicks will come the other way.
00:26:28Knicks have not shot well on the road.
00:26:3031% from three.
00:26:32As Townes snap in and out there.
00:26:34Three for 13 tonight.
00:26:36They really struggle from three and a loss to Miami to start this trip on Monday.
00:26:42Christie kicks it out in the corner.
00:26:43Williams is going to try again, and that won't go.
00:26:46Townes with a rebound.
00:26:50Williams is now 5 for 33 from three-point range on the season.
00:26:54And coming into the game, he and D'Angelo Russell combined 12 for 106.
00:27:0022 for 106 from the three-point line out of two guys that play a lot of minutes in the guard spot.
00:27:05And both guys, talented scorers, they have just really struggled to shoot the ball from deep.
00:27:10Fortunately, tonight, some other guys have picked up the slack.
00:27:12Hart turns it over.
00:27:14Third turnover for the Knicks.
00:27:16Mavericks have six.
00:27:18Williams finds Lively.
00:27:19Nice pass there, but Lively too strong.
00:27:27Townes drives on Lively.
00:27:29Lost it.
00:27:29Got it back.
00:27:30Thompson looking to help.
00:27:35There's a double team leaving the grind wide open.
00:27:38And that three will go.
00:27:39Clarkson offensive rebound.
00:27:42Yeah, Vasily's going to try.
00:27:43Another miss from three.
00:27:45So are we doing the hopes and prayers thing right now for three?
00:27:50They just have so much talent that they don't need to do what they're doing there.
00:27:54That's my opinion.
00:27:55You can get into the paint.
00:27:57You can get some free throws, some easy buckets.
00:27:59But to keep shooting threes, yeah, shoot your good shots.
00:28:01But sometimes you don't need to search them the way the Knicks are right now.
00:28:05McFry picks up his first foul.
00:28:07Second team foul here in the second quarter.
00:28:11Diowaro, the rookie's going to come in for the Knicks.
00:28:13Mohamed Diowaro, second round pick from France.
00:28:19Josh Hart will sit down.
00:28:21Townsend Lively fighting in a backcourt violation.
00:28:30Lively got possession.
00:28:31And then that court went into the backcourt after having frontcourt possession.
00:28:35That's seven turnovers now for Dallas.
00:28:40So far, this one is not going to go into the archives.
00:28:43It's early, Mike.
00:28:44It's early.
00:28:46This looks like scores from, like, the 90s.
00:28:48Start of the second quarter.
00:28:56Deuce McBride looking.
00:28:58Finds Towns.
00:29:00Well defended by Lively.
00:29:03Townsend goes past him.
00:29:04Gets inside.
00:29:05Kicks it out.
00:29:06McBride.
00:29:06Wide open three.
00:29:08Another miss.
00:29:08Lively grabs another rebound.
00:29:10That's his fifth.
00:29:13Marshall goes right at Towns.
00:29:16Can't get at the four, but a whistle and a foul.
00:29:18And Anaji Marshall will shoot two.
00:29:22With just over three minutes gone by here in the second.
00:29:28Little inside-out dribble.
00:29:30You see him give him the head and shoulders right there to get Carl Anthony Towns a little bit off balance.
00:29:34You just see that left arm of Carl Anthony Towns with a push to the upper back as Marshall tried to get to the other side of the rim.
00:29:41Marshall had the best game of his career last year against the Knicks at a 36-point game at Madison Square Garden.
00:29:49As a reminder, our annual NBA on Christmas Day tradition continues this year.
00:29:53Dunk the Halls is back.
00:29:54The first of our five games, Cavs-Knicks at noon Eastern on ABC and ESPN with a real-time animated version from Main Street USA at Magic Kingdom on ESPN2.
00:30:04You can also watch on Disney+, the Disney Channel, Disney XD, and the ESPN app.
00:30:11Is it too early for the holiday music?
00:30:13It's not even Thanksgiving yet, right?
00:30:15I guess in the promo...
00:30:16I think the week leading up to Thanksgiving, you can start, but you can't start playing Mariah Carey until after Thanksgiving.
00:30:23In our house, it starts right after Halloween.
00:30:26I'm just telling you right now.
00:30:27What I walk into the house to, what's on television, the music that's playing.
00:30:32You're a sociopath.
00:30:32You're a sociopath.
00:30:33I'm just telling you.
00:30:35That's what's waiting on me when I get home.
00:30:37Mike, you're an old radio guy.
00:30:39They play Christmas music and holiday music starting in, like, Halloween now these days.
00:30:44Yeah, I never liked it.
00:30:46Marshall knocks down the second one.
00:30:49That's the first two free throws for Dallas.
00:30:54McBride up top, Yavasele.
00:31:01Clarkson.
00:31:04Drives inside, layup is good.
00:31:07Nordy Clarkson.
00:31:08He's been a lot better after a little bit of a slow start finding a new team new role.
00:31:13He's had double figures in six of his last eight.
00:31:16Nice job right there attacking, using his offense.
00:31:18Nick's first field goal of the second.
00:31:21They miss their first six.
00:31:22Christy gets inside.
00:31:23Diawara alters that shot.
00:31:25Marshall again drives up and under and draws the foul.
00:31:28And takes another shot.
00:31:30He's paying for it, but he's getting to the line.
00:31:311,051, 100 yards.
00:31:34His first personal.
00:31:36Diawara picks up his first.
00:31:38Marshall in his second year with Dallas.
00:31:41Sixth year overall.
00:31:43He's a fighter just like his dad.
00:31:45Now, his dad was a pro boxer.
00:31:47But he's a different kind of fighter.
00:31:48Guy that wasn't drafted out of college.
00:31:50Had to go to the G-Leagues.
00:31:52First signed a two-way deal.
00:31:53Just kept grinding and has turned himself into an excellent player.
00:31:57Signed a $27 million contract.
00:32:00He's just a really good professional.
00:32:03Yeah, he is.
00:32:03And when you look at even this roster, one of the things that Jake Kidd said about his team
00:32:07is that a lot of these players want to make impact scoring.
00:32:10You talk about Williams.
00:32:11You talk about Marshall.
00:32:12So, it's the growth of these players.
00:32:14It's like, hey, you can do more to have an impact on this team.
00:32:17And he thinks that will help balance out their attack.
00:32:20He has more points than the rest of his teammates.
00:32:2215 for Marshall.
00:32:2329 for Dallas.
00:32:26Gaviselli hesitated.
00:32:27McBride for the shoot.
00:32:28Goes inside.
00:32:29Reverse.
00:32:29Beautiful move from Deuce McBride.
00:32:32That was beautiful.
00:32:33He gave him a little rocker stem.
00:32:35Got by Lively.
00:32:36But if he takes that ball up on the right side,
00:32:38Lively absolutely is going to pin that on the glass.
00:32:41Use the rim to help him out.
00:32:43Christie in the corner.
00:32:44Christie's been one of the best shooting threes in the corner.
00:32:46Bad pass, though.
00:32:47Towns the steal.
00:32:48The big man on the run.
00:32:49Down the lane.
00:32:50Running shot.
00:32:51Blocked with foul.
00:32:54Knicks won a goaltend.
00:32:55It appeared that he blocked it before it hit the back.
00:32:59But it's this nice year by McBride,
00:33:01who already had taken five threes on the night.
00:33:03But the clock's getting late on that closeout by Lively.
00:33:06He really set him up with a jab step.
00:33:08And again, great body control to take it to the other side of the rim.
00:33:11It's the only place he was going to get that shot off.
00:33:13So they didn't have to shoot that three, is what you're saying?
00:33:16I think he was listening to you.
00:33:17Okay.
00:33:18He heard you.
00:33:18Okay.
00:33:19Proud of him.
00:33:19He turned down one after you said that.
00:33:21And now he's got himself on the board.
00:33:24Now that next three will be a little easier for him.
00:33:25There we go, Legs.
00:33:26No, there we go.
00:33:27That next three's easier.
00:33:29Towns hits the first.
00:33:30Shammett Robertson come back in for New York.
00:33:32P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford return for Dallas.
00:33:35P.J. Washington.
00:33:37Junior.
00:33:37Again, both teams missing key players.
00:33:41Of course, Dallas without Anthony Davis.
00:33:44Another seven to ten days with that calf injury.
00:33:46And then, as we mentioned at the top, Cooper Flagg not playing tonight.
00:33:49Illness of the rookie.
00:33:51Missing the first game of his career.
00:33:53Meanwhile, the Knicks without O.G. Ananobi.
00:33:57He's off to the best start of his career, but has a hamstring injury.
00:34:04The Cats already missed a couple of free throws tonight.
00:34:07And he's 90% on the season.
00:34:10Thompson lets it fly and hails it.
00:34:12Eight three-pointers already for Dallas.
00:34:15And the lead back up to three.
00:34:20Yeah, we said it at the top.
00:34:21The Mavericks, with all the struggles and with all the off-the-court drama,
00:34:25they've been playing hard all season.
00:34:27McBride just can't find it from long range.
00:34:29He's 0 for 6.
00:34:34Shammett trying to fight over screens.
00:34:37Clarkson does it again.
00:34:38Williams will try a three.
00:34:41Downs the rebound.
00:34:47Clarkson spins.
00:34:48Gets in the paint.
00:34:50Up top to Shammett.
00:34:51Shammett finds the elbow.
00:34:53Too strong.
00:34:54Long rebound.
00:34:55Goes right back out to him on the tip.
00:35:00Clarkson, nice spin move.
00:35:01Count it and one.
00:35:04The Knicks spark off the bench with a chance for a three-point play.
00:35:08We'll take a timeout.
00:35:12And you get Jordan Clarkson, former six-man of the year,
00:35:16getting a bucket, knocking it down.
00:35:18Mixed up by one.
00:35:23By Chon.
00:35:24Well, Najee Marshall has been really feast or famine this year.
00:35:27He had 58 points in two games and averaged eight in the other 13.
00:35:33He's feasting tonight.
00:35:34Very aggressive.
00:35:35He understood without Cooper Flagg and already missing a couple of stars.
00:35:40There was going to be more opportunity to be aggressive.
00:35:42He found his three-point shot early, and it's really set up his night.
00:35:46He has carried them offensively to this point.
00:35:49Well, Marshall, excellent start coming off the bench.
00:35:54And that's exactly what this team needed with being shorthanded.
00:35:57As we said, two of his best games last year,
00:36:00and he seems to like playing against the Knicks.
00:36:04Well, Clarkson, chance to complete the three-point play.
00:36:07Clarkson, the free agent, first year.
00:36:09Knicks wanted to increase their bench production.
00:36:13And the bench minutes as well.
00:36:16Clarkson has helped that after a slow start.
00:36:18First couple of games, he's played really well.
00:36:24They find Christy.
00:36:26Christy, his three-point is good.
00:36:28And Christy was one of those players, obviously, the big trade.
00:36:32But he was having such a great year with the Lakers.
00:36:35Comes over here, is really a really good two-way player,
00:36:38and has so much more room to grow.
00:36:41Hart can't get it.
00:36:43Long rebound.
00:36:44Washington tips it, but all the way back to Clarkson.
00:36:50Clarkson alley-oop.
00:36:51Robinson, and a foul.
00:36:54Well, a free throw for Mitchell Robinson with an X-down three,
00:36:57midway through the second.
00:36:58And this is the point.
00:37:03You're not shooting the three well.
00:37:04Get in the paint.
00:37:05Get in the paint.
00:37:06Get a bucket.
00:37:07Get a lob opportunity for your big.
00:37:09Now, I understand Robinson might not be the best free throw shooter,
00:37:13but once you start getting in that paint,
00:37:15it starts opening up those threes.
00:37:16They become a lot less contested.
00:37:18And what are you about to say, Mike?
00:37:19Oh, he's the best offensive rebounder in the NBA so far,
00:37:23and he's only playing 16 minutes a game.
00:37:25But his free throw shooting has been very difficult throughout his career.
00:37:30He's only taken three so far this season.
00:37:32Likes the line drive, and that one goes in.
00:37:34So he's now two of four from the free throw line.
00:37:38I don't know if he likes it as much as that's just the way he shoots it.
00:37:45He's tried a lot of different ways his most.
00:37:48I'm still shocked that not one single player will try the Rick Barry underhand method.
00:37:55Players that are shooting the 50% or less.
00:37:58There's a, I think there's an ego thing.
00:38:00Oh, man.
00:38:00There's an ego thing.
00:38:01Well, I'll tell you this.
00:38:02You're right.
00:38:02It's an ego thing,
00:38:03and the way they would get taken apart, right, on social media if they did that.
00:38:07But, look, you go shoot 90%,
00:38:09people are going to shut up over a period of time.
00:38:13Russell gets inside, trying to sneak it in.
00:38:16Robinson tips it.
00:38:17Shamit did a good job.
00:38:18With some physical defense.
00:38:22Shamit to Brunson.
00:38:23Brunson checks his feet.
00:38:26Robinson, another offensive rebound.
00:38:28Knocked out of his hands and couldn't hold on.
00:38:31Good hands from Clay Thompson.
00:38:34That goes over our man.
00:38:35That's Jayden Hardy.
00:38:38And now it's Marshall.
00:38:39Hardy back in.
00:38:40Marshall's going to return as well.
00:38:42Knicks now three for 19 from three.
00:38:45And the Mavericks nine for 19.
00:38:48Yet it's only a two-point lead.
00:38:50And these two coaches never would have thought,
00:38:51if they both had taken the same number of threes to this point in the game,
00:38:55that the Mavericks would be outscoring them by 18 points from out there.
00:39:00Russell.
00:39:01Hardy.
00:39:01Hardy.
00:39:03Long rebound.
00:39:04Hardy chasing.
00:39:05And a loose ball foul is going to go against Shamit.
00:39:07Good hustle play from Hardy to draw that foul.
00:39:11First foul on Shamit.
00:39:12That's a tough block out because Hardy knew before anybody that that was well short.
00:39:16So as soon as he hit the ground, he's sprinting after this thing because he can see it first and Shamit figuring that ball's not going to come right back to where he just vacated.
00:39:28It does once in a while.
00:39:30But that's why Hardy was able to beat him to the spot and earn a couple of free throws.
00:39:33Hardy had a season-high 17 Monday in the loss at Minnesota at four threes.
00:39:38This is his fourth year, his second-round pick.
00:39:41He shows flashes, Richard, just hasn't gotten that consistency yet.
00:39:45Well, and that's the thing.
00:39:46When you're in your first three, four years, you're trying to figure out where your areas that you can grow are.
00:39:52And he's shown those flashes.
00:39:53Now it's a matter of adding to his game and then becoming more consistent.
00:39:57So those flashes are more of who he is.
00:40:00Well, he's got four points off the bench tonight.
00:40:03Mavericks' lead is three.
00:40:08Robinson sets the screen.
00:40:09Brunson fires in the corner.
00:40:11And then Shamit threw it away.
00:40:12P.J. Washington saw that coming.
00:40:14Russell on the drive.
00:40:16Scoop lamp is good.
00:40:17The Mavericks are playing some really good defense.
00:40:28Bridges pulls up, jump shot, got it.
00:40:30Bridges with seven.
00:40:32He's three for three from the field.
00:40:35And that's the rare mid-range shot for the Knicks tonight.
00:40:38It's either been three-point shots or attacking the rim.
00:40:42Gafford got hit by Brunson.
00:40:44Still knocked it in and a chance for a three-point play from Gafford.
00:40:47Brunson picks up his first.
00:40:53You know, Daniel Gafford doesn't have enough made field goals yet to qualify.
00:40:57He will eventually get there.
00:40:59But if he did, right now he's got the highest career field goal percentage in history.
00:41:04He's 70% from the field for his career.
00:41:07Really amazing.
00:41:08He converts.
00:41:08Only, obviously, takes shots he can make.
00:41:10This is pretty much what he's going to do.
00:41:12Lob dunk threat as well.
00:41:14But he does finish it if he gets his hands on it.
00:41:16Well, he knows his strengths and he sticks with him.
00:41:20He's in his seventh year.
00:41:20He's only taken one three-point field goal attempt in his NBA career.
00:41:25Like Dirty Harry said, a man's got to know his limitations.
00:41:28And he's done a pretty good job for himself so far.
00:41:30That was a terrific acquisition a couple of years ago.
00:41:35Bridges jump shot.
00:41:36And Bridges is four for four.
00:41:39The rest of the team is nine for 36.
00:41:41Washington inside.
00:41:48Guyford gathers.
00:41:49Count it.
00:41:50And another foul.
00:41:52That's a total miscommunication on the part of the Knicks.
00:41:55They tried to quickly jump into a 2-3 zone.
00:41:59But you saw on the back side, Mikael Bridges and Mitchell Robinson right here.
00:42:04Confused.
00:42:05Mitchell Robinson really just out of position.
00:42:07And once that ball gets to the middle, now you've completely broken down and compromised
00:42:11the back line of the defense.
00:42:13So Gafford now, five points, three boards off the bench.
00:42:17The foul on Josh Hart.
00:42:19That's his third in just 13 minutes.
00:42:23And Gafford hits the free throw.
00:42:24And it's the largest lead by either team here in the first half.
00:42:28Seven-point advantage.
00:42:2930 bench points for Dallas.
00:42:33Bridges.
00:42:35That's his first miss.
00:42:39Washington up top.
00:42:40Russell.
00:42:45Another turnover by Russell.
00:42:47Here comes Clarkson.
00:42:49Three-pointer won't go.
00:42:50Bridges trying to keep it alive.
00:42:52Clarkson got it back and drew the foul.
00:42:54Good hustle from Clarkson.
00:42:55And Bridges trying to keep that alive as the shooting woes continue.
00:43:00I know.
00:43:00I know what you're thinking, Parker.
00:43:03Because I'm thinking the same thing on this one.
00:43:04You got a two-on-one break.
00:43:07Look, he gets the opportunity.
00:43:08But look, there's certain people.
00:43:10Jordan Clarkson.
00:43:11There's certain people that those shots are allowed for.
00:43:13But we just see it too often from too many players, in my opinion.
00:43:18That one surprised me.
00:43:19Because looking at it on that cross-court pass from Brunson, I was looking at Clarkson.
00:43:24And immediately, I looked down to the lane.
00:43:26I'm going, he's got 15 feet of space to go attack.
00:43:29Doesn't mean necessarily shoot it.
00:43:31Maybe he makes a play at the end of it.
00:43:32But he had already determined as he was running the floor, he was going to shoot that three if he caught it.
00:43:37Now, there's certain players that you understand.
00:43:39Look at all that space.
00:43:41So for him, he's like, this might be the cleanest shot I get.
00:43:44But at the end of the day, this is a man that is a known scorer.
00:43:47Do I think people that are shooting 34%, 35% should shoot those shots?
00:43:51No.
00:43:52But how many players do you see night in and night out shoot those types of shots?
00:43:58That wasn't a rhetorical question.
00:44:02Answer me.
00:44:03Well, he's got seven points in seven minutes off the bench.
00:44:06Both teams shooting under 40%.
00:44:08But the Mavericks knocking down 9 of 20 from 3.
00:44:12Hardy up top, Russell.
00:44:15Hardy drives on Brunson.
00:44:17Falling away.
00:44:18Backs up.
00:44:18Shot is good.
00:44:19Nice soft touch.
00:44:20Hardy six points off the bench.
00:44:28Brunson goes inside.
00:44:29Blocking foul.
00:44:30Count it and one.
00:44:31Hardy not happy.
00:44:34Brunson's got a chance for the three-point play.
00:44:36Little bit of a shoulder and elbow there.
00:44:45He's clearly still sliding.
00:44:47And the Dallas bench said, do not challenge.
00:44:50You got two thumbs down.
00:44:52He wasn't square.
00:44:53There was a push-off, but he was not square.
00:44:55And it wasn't forearm extended either.
00:44:57It was mostly just shoulder.
00:44:58And this is what the officials use the word, gets into the path of the dribbler.
00:45:02And Hardy came into the path, so he picks up his third foul.
00:45:07Goes six down.
00:45:08Thompson back in.
00:45:09Brunson misses a free throw.
00:45:11Nixon missed six free throws.
00:45:12Here we go.
00:45:14And 16 three-pointers.
00:45:16And they're only down by five.
00:45:19Marshall fakes the handoff.
00:45:20Drives inside.
00:45:21Shot no good for the foul.
00:45:22Clarkson.
00:45:24Yeah, we're going to take a timeout.
00:45:26Beautiful night in Dallas.
00:45:27Not necessarily beautiful basketball inside the American Airlines Center.
00:45:32Five-point match lead.
00:45:34Presented by State Farm.
00:45:36Well, the third annual NBA Cup rolls on with a Thanksgiving Eve group stage triple header.
00:45:42Piston Celtics begin the day at 5 Eastern.
00:45:44Then Timberwolves Thunder.
00:45:46And then the Rockets and the Warriors.
00:45:47That's the game we'll have.
00:45:48Capping the night 10 Eastern.
00:45:50All starts with NBA countdown at 430.
00:45:52Those are big games for the NBA Cup to try and get into the knockout round.
00:45:57In the quarterfinals.
00:45:58And as you see, Houston and Golden State.
00:46:01All five of those teams at 1-1.
00:46:04And the players have really embraced this.
00:46:06And not just because you're going to get a lot of extra money if you win it.
00:46:10It just, it really has raised the level of competition for these regular season games.
00:46:14I know people talk about the regular season doesn't matter.
00:46:17You do not get to be one of the 450 in this league unless you are psychotic about competition.
00:46:23It doesn't matter if there's a dollar on the line, if there's bragging rights, if there's a trophy of more money.
00:46:29So many of these players cannot sleep unless they're competing.
00:46:33Marshall competing tonight.
00:46:3516 points off the bench in 14 minutes.
00:46:40The lead is 6.
00:46:45Yavasele finds Brunson.
00:46:49Brunson.
00:46:50Nice beat inside.
00:46:51Beautiful look.
00:46:52And Yavasele off the bench with his second field goal.
00:46:58Marshall will bring it up.
00:46:59Not really a true point guard out on the floor right now for Dallas.
00:47:08Now Yavasele may have gotten a piece of Washington's first shot as Clarkson brings it up the other way.
00:47:12Thompson chasing Brunson.
00:47:23Brunson pulls up just inside the arc.
00:47:25Jumper's good.
00:47:26And he's got 12 points.
00:47:28So difficult to time that up.
00:47:29When he gets you going like that with the back and forth dribble,
00:47:32he's so good at keeping you off balance to time your contest.
00:47:36Play Thompson a little late on that one.
00:47:38Washington shot off the mark.
00:47:40Boxing grabs his fourth rebound.
00:47:41Brunson trying to get away.
00:47:47Finds Towns.
00:47:48Nice pick and roll and a slam.
00:47:50Carl Anthony Towns with authority.
00:47:52And the game is tied.
00:47:55Despite the horrific three-point shooting and disparity,
00:48:00the Knicks have come back to tie it up.
00:48:04Thompson left open.
00:48:05Can't get it to fall.
00:48:06Yavasele, who's given Mike Brown some good minutes off the bench,
00:48:10grabs that rebound.
00:48:12Brunson, too strong.
00:48:14Thompson deflects it to Gaffer.
00:48:26Marshall finds Christie.
00:48:27Christie double-team stolen by Bridges.
00:48:34Terrific anticipation.
00:48:36And the Knicks regain the lead.
00:48:38That's the 10th turnover for the Mavericks.
00:48:40Well, they don't have a point guard up here.
00:48:42They don't have somebody they can throw the ball into to initiate the offense and relieve pressure.
00:48:47They're out here figuring it out.
00:48:50Bridges amongst the leaders in the NBA and steals per game.
00:48:54He's been on a tear recently on the defensive end.
00:48:58Marshall against Yavasele.
00:49:00Gets inside.
00:49:01Tough shot.
00:49:01It's good.
00:49:02And a foul.
00:49:04Knivesley Marshall fired up in a big first half.
00:49:07About as aggressive as I've seen him all season offensively.
00:49:15I mean, he just understands.
00:49:17He is catching the ball on some of these kickouts or ball reversals,
00:49:20and he has nothing else on his mind but putting it down if there's not space
00:49:24and getting into the lane to create some contact.
00:49:28The average is 11 per game.
00:49:30That's his numbers here in the first half, as we said earlier.
00:49:32Had a 30, and again, it was a career high for him.
00:49:36Had a 38 game against the Knicks last year in New York
00:49:39and a 24-point game against the Knicks here in Dallas.
00:49:42Two-for-one opportunity for the Knicks.
00:49:45Brunson drives on Christie.
00:49:46Spinning.
00:49:47Gets inside.
00:49:48Flips it up.
00:49:48And the foul.
00:49:51And that's Brunson doing what you talked about at the top of the telecast,
00:49:54which you love about his game.
00:49:55Now, it's the stop and the start.
00:49:58You can be extremely fast.
00:49:59He's quick.
00:50:00He's fast.
00:50:00But watch this.
00:50:01Change of direction.
00:50:03Take the contact again.
00:50:04And then the ability, and it helps that he's left-handed.
00:50:06He's able to finish through that contact.
00:50:09Not many guards want contact.
00:50:11Brunson's one of those guards that wants contact.
00:50:13And then when he feels the angle he has, he stops and starts and goes the other way.
00:50:18We've got the halftime presented by Hyundai Palisade.
00:50:22And when Brunson returns after missing two games with a sprained ankle.
00:50:25We haven't noticed any effects as he knocks that one down.
00:50:29Brunson, of course, the second-round pick of the Mavericks, his first four years here.
00:50:35One year, he was, I think he was fourth in the voting for six-man.
00:50:39Of course, played with Luka Doncic.
00:50:41Two point guards that are no longer wearing a Mavs uniform, much to the chagrin of Maverick fans.
00:50:49Thompson.
00:50:51Washington.
00:50:52Marshall.
00:50:52Just standing there in the corner, in and out.
00:50:55Ball picked up.
00:50:56Bridges with three seconds to go, plenty of time.
00:50:59Bridges stops, puts up the wild shot.
00:51:02Knicks thought there was a foul.
00:51:03There appeared to be some contact.
00:51:06That will end the first half.
00:51:09Knicks trailed by as many as seven.
00:51:12Mavericks knocking down three-pointers.
00:51:14Knicks really struggling, but the Knicks finished strong to end the second quarter.
00:51:18Najee Marshall, what a half, 19 points.
00:51:24Hyundai halftime by Palisade.
00:51:27Coming up, Malika, Michael Malone, Brian Windhorst, and Kendrick Perkins.
00:51:31Two quarters complete, two-point lead for New York.
00:51:36Dell Technologies.

00:51:45Presented by Hyundai Palisade.
00:51:46Well, at the break, it's the New York Knicks that lead the Dallas Mavericks 52-50.
00:51:53Jalen Brunson, his first game back here in two games.
00:51:58And that brings us to our court vision, because Jalen Brunson back after missing the last two games,
00:52:02and that opens up a whole lot for Carl Anthony Towns.
00:52:05You can see their two-man game here a little bit, but that sounds like a job for our VR glasses.
00:52:09So, Coach, break down this play for us.
00:52:11What do you see here?
00:52:12All right, well, much has been made, Malika, of the Knicks offense under Mike Brown.
00:52:16We're going to jump right into the action here.
00:52:19Brunson's going to hit Carl, and he's going to go set this high split with Bridges right here.
00:52:23Hardcut forces a switch.
00:52:25This is going to flow into a two-man game and freeze it right there.
00:52:28Not only are they playing a two-man game, but along the baseline, a really important point,
00:52:32you have Mikael Bridges flying off this rocker screen by Mitchell Robinson, which engages Najee Marshall.
00:52:37So, now, Jalen Brunson, his job is to engage Daniel Gafford, get and run this, to open up this pocket pass.
00:52:43Carl can pick and pop for the three, or in this case, he's catching inside the three.
00:52:48He's got one thing in mind.
00:52:49He's getting downhill, putting pressure on the defense, but also on the rim for a really emphatic finish in the paint.
00:52:57And the Knicks are going to need a lot more plays like that if they want to try to get their first road win of the season.
00:53:02Well, Brian, the three-pointers are also flying early in this game.
00:53:06Well, the Knicks have missed 19 of them.
00:53:09They've also missed six free throws, and they're up two.
00:53:13So, good job by the Mavericks, Steve, a close, but I don't know.

00:53:24Let's get to some action around the association.
00:53:27What do you say?
00:53:27Let's get out and run.
00:53:28Starting with, Perk, you're second-seeded Toronto Raptors.
00:53:33Yep.
00:53:33Brandon Ingram, been in his bag like he got fries at the bottom, playing exceptionally well.
00:53:39Him and Scottie Bourne's been carrying this team.
00:53:41And look, that's all right.
00:53:43You have turnovers every now and then.
00:53:45And you've done like that every now and then.
00:53:46Good decision in getting out of the way.
00:53:48Just let him have his highlight and fight another day.
00:53:50The Raptors' starting lineup in this game, Malika, shot 67%.
00:53:53Of the Raptors, Perk tried to warn us before the season.
00:53:56Did he just blow a kiss at him?
00:53:57He did.
00:53:58Five straight.
00:53:59Look.
00:53:59Win is a vibe for last night.
00:54:01That's exactly right.
00:54:02Oh, he didn't.
00:54:03That looks like a kiss to me.
00:54:05Now time for tonight's More in the Moment, brought to you by Hyundai Palisade.
00:54:08I mentioned Malik Monk earlier.
00:54:10Well, let's actually check in on the Kings and the Oklahoma City Thunder here.
00:54:14They are a wagon rolling.
00:54:16That was nasty, Chet.
00:54:18That's that lab work with KD in the summertime.
00:54:21And then SGA, surgical coach.
00:54:22I'd say there's no hangover from winning a championship as they try to become the first
00:54:27team since Golden State in 17-18 to go back-to-back.
00:54:30Shea obviously playing at an MVP level once again as he carries his Thunder team.
00:54:35Well, since they can't really pop the champagne, there wasn't going to be a hangover anyway.
00:54:39But Oklahoma City putting the finishing touches on their 15-1 start to stay a perfect 7-0 at home.
00:54:45Brian, the New York Knicks, meanwhile, halfway to getting their first road win of the season.
00:54:49Look, let's be honest, they've got to win this game.
00:54:51They cannot allow this opportunity to pass with this banged-up team.
00:54:54Clearly, Karl-Anthony Towns knows that second half from Dallas coming up after this.

00:55:09The Knicks leading the Mavericks 52-50.
00:55:13Let's take a look at the first-half stats brought to you by Chewy.
00:55:17There were some ugly stats out there.
00:55:20Knicks shooting 3 of 21 from 3, yet they have the lead with a huge disparity at the 3-point mark.
00:55:27There's also a huge disparity on the turnovers, obviously going in favor of the Knicks.
00:55:31Great bench play from Dallas as well with 36.
00:55:35Hello again, everyone.
00:55:36Along with Richard Jefferson, Tim Legler, Mike Green on hand.
00:55:38We'll check in with George Sodano in a bit.
00:55:40Knicks came in third-best offense in the NBA.
00:55:44Boy, that was a struggle big time.
00:55:45What started to work for them?
00:55:47Well, I think they just kept persevering.
00:55:49But that two-man game, that's what kind of got them out of the mud.
00:55:52Understand, when you're playing against a team that doesn't have everybody,
00:55:55but look at this easy shot that Brunson gets off this two-man game.
00:55:59Then here, they're playing off of each other.
00:56:02Karl-Anthony Towns doesn't settle for the jumper.
00:56:04But I love this two-man game because it opens up everything for the rest of their teammates.
00:56:09Once you start to pack the paint, that's when the three-point shots start falling for the Knicks.
00:56:13Licks, meanwhile, no Anthony Davis, obviously.
00:56:15Cooper Flagg out.
00:56:17First game, he's missed.
00:56:18They played so hard defensively.
00:56:20They hit more threes, yet they're down by two.
00:56:22Well, one thing that's been a constant for the Mavericks, despite the guys that haven't been here,
00:56:26they're not feeling sorry for themselves.
00:56:27They compete.
00:56:28Their defense kept them in it, and then they've had an uncommon shooting night from the three-point line.
00:56:34And a great first half from Najee Marshall.
00:56:37And Brandon Williams throws it up.
00:56:39That's his first field goal.
00:56:40He was 0 for 4 in that first half.
00:56:45And tied again.
00:56:46The game was close.
00:56:47Largest lead by either team was 7.
00:56:50Dallas had that.
00:56:51Towns gets inside.
00:56:52Tried to get inside to Robinson.
00:56:54Turned it over.
00:56:55Again, good defense from Dallas.
00:56:58Good defense from Bridges.
00:57:08Going to let Christie get it.
00:57:10Williams has it.
00:57:10Shot block at 6.
00:57:12Williams gets inside.
00:57:14Shot blocked by Bridges.
00:57:16Another excellent defensive player.
00:57:18That's his second blocked shot of the game.
00:57:20He also has three steals.
00:57:21Towns.
00:57:23He's three-point shooting.
00:57:24Right now struggling.
00:57:26He's 0 for 4.
00:57:26Feels like he's due.
00:57:27And I think all four of those have been trail threes in early transition as a secondary break.
00:57:33Clean shots for him.
00:57:35He normally will knock down at least a couple of those.
00:57:37Wade Thompson knocking that one down.
00:57:39His third field goal.
00:57:41And the Mavericks back up by two.
00:57:50Put the smaller Washington on Towns.
00:57:52He's not lively.
00:57:53He's guarding Robinson.
00:57:56Shot it.
00:57:58Kick ball.
00:58:00Shot clock reset to 14.
00:58:01Well, Klay Thompson has struggled with his shooting.
00:58:06We've talked a lot about it.
00:58:07Does a nice job here, though, getting to a spot inside the three-point line.
00:58:11He was a great, great mid-range shooter all those years in Golden State.
00:58:14Was able to keep his balance right there for the little leaner.
00:58:17They've come off the bench the last seven games.
00:58:21But with Cooper flag out, got the start tonight.
00:58:23Brunson draws the foul.
00:58:24Shot won't go.
00:58:26He'll get to the line.
00:58:28Nick struggled from three and struggled from the three-point line.
00:58:32Nine of 15 in that first half.
00:58:35Now going to the line, Danny Brunson kicks in.
00:58:40Brunson, of course, he played one year in Dallas with Jason Kidd as the head coach.
00:58:47And not many people say that they knew that Brunson had the chance to be not just a good player, but an elite player.
00:58:54But Jason Kidd said, I thought he would be.
00:58:56He always felt that way.
00:58:58Hard to get that chance when you play with Luka Doncic with the amount of usage he has.
00:59:02But Jason Kidd was one of those few that believed that Brunson could be one of the top players in the league.
00:59:08Well, and for me, when I look at it, it's like you can have two great players.
00:59:12And what I saw with Brunson and Luka is that Luka was great and Brunson raised up to an elite level.
00:59:18So that's what Jason Kidd was seeing.
00:59:20Everyday work, the consistency.
00:59:22He was even pushing that.
00:59:23He called Jalen Brunson a coachable adult.
00:59:28Very similar to myself as a young player.
00:59:30Thompson struggling with his dribble.
00:59:33Bridges putting some good pressure on.
00:59:36Robinson goes to help out.
00:59:37They get it to Lively.
00:59:38Christie gets a good look in the corner.
00:59:40And Towns, the weak side rebound.
00:59:47Bridges the handoff with Robinson.
00:59:49Finds some room.
00:59:50Tough shot over Lively.
00:59:51Knocks it down.
00:59:53He's six of eight from the field.
00:59:54He's got 13.
00:59:55A really difficult shot that time.
00:59:57Lively couldn't have done much more than that.
00:59:59He fully extended, but Bridges has that great leg.
