00:00Let's stare tomorrow straight in the face.
00:03If I say to you, tomorrow might be it.
00:09Tomorrow might be the last game that Steve Kerr coaches for the Golden State Warriors.
00:17As a fan of the team, what goes through your mind?
00:22How does that make you feel?
00:24The idea that tomorrow might be it.
00:30Right.
00:30I mean, you're either in a spot of good, it's about time,
00:34or you're more in like where I am right now, which is full-on Cheryl Bosa.
00:40No, I'm not ready for that.
00:42I think he's still, I mean, not he's still, he is a great coach.
00:46He's a great leader.
00:47I think their culture is phenomenal, and Steph is still going to be here.
00:50So who are you going to bring in to be the new coach of Steph and Draymond
00:54and whatever else is left of the ALKP pods, whatever show is still going to be here.
01:01I want Steve to be here.
01:03Steve's a good coach.
01:04And forget what he does for our show, which, by the way, is phenomenal.
01:07Steve Kerr at four today.
01:08And he's been wonderful with us over the course of, what, now three years, I think, of doing it,
01:14three seasons of Steve Kerr thereabout, and we joined the afternoon portion of the day.
01:20And so that, selfishly for me, is something I don't want to let go of.
01:24But put that aside, Steve Kerr is phenomenal.
01:28As a person and as a coach, I still believe that with this team, he's the guy.
01:34Now, when you turn the whole thing over, like you do with your soil this time of year,
01:38where you till the soil, when you go to a young team with young players, yeah, it's time for a
01:43new coach.
01:44I totally see that.
01:45He sees that.
01:46I think that they all see that.
01:47But we're not there yet.
01:50You got to keep Kerr.
01:51So when I threw this out there this morning, I, you know, went through the exercise of, okay,
01:57how, how, answer your own question.
01:59How does that make you feel?
02:01And the first thing that came to my mind almost kind of surprised me.
02:05Because yesterday on the crossover, the guys were doing that,
02:10and I think it was from the morning show, like, what's one word to sort of describe the season?
02:15And the first word that popped into my head was stale.
02:20So nobody wants to stick with stale.
02:22Stale literally means, like, take it to the trash and throw it out.
02:25This is, this is not savable.
02:28We've done this before, and I don't want to keep doing it.
02:32And that was my thought on the season.
02:33But that's the season, not the entire life of the characters we've come to know.
02:42And the first thought that went through my head surprised me.
02:45But I want to say it out loud.
02:47As a fan, I'm not done yet.
02:52I'm just not.
02:53And I can totally see if that makes you roll your eyes.
02:57I can totally see if your response is how.
03:00How can you not be done with this?
03:03It has been four years since you and I were out at that parade.
03:09And it has been few and far between the moments of hope since then.
03:16And the numbers next to the three in Curry's age, they keep going up.
03:22Yep.
03:22Because four years ago it was a four and now it's an eight.
03:25When the four's on deck in that first digit spot.
03:27Right, and we're screaming toward nine.
03:29And then, yeah, then we've got to flip both numbers.
03:34But I'm looking at this through the lens of the characters we've come to know.
03:40And for the exact same reason why I would never, ever, ever, if I were running the Warriors,
03:47I would never entertain trading Steph Curry, even if you convinced me that it was the right basketball thing to
03:54do.
03:54I still wouldn't do it.
03:56I wouldn't do it for emotional reasons, marketing reasons, fandom reasons.
04:01I wouldn't do it.
04:03And I'm going to say the same thing about Steve Kerr as I will about Steph Curry.
04:10I want these guys to finish with the Warriors and I want them to finish together.
04:14And wherever the story goes, even if it's not somewhere poetic,
04:18I'm willing to listen and read that story and experience that story and go on that journey.
04:23And I want all of them to end here together.
04:28And I want to see how that goes, even if it's more play-in games next year.
04:33I'm up for that.
04:35I'm just, I'm not done.
04:36Right, and they are up for that and they are not done.
04:39That's why I think that they're ultimately going to come to the same spot,
04:42which is, okay, this year is going to either end tomorrow or Friday or in a couple of weeks
04:48or maybe in June with a parade.
04:49Somewhere in between tomorrow and June, this year will end.
04:53It'll either end with confetti and a parade, and I can't believe that just happened,
04:58or a fizz out on a Wednesday play-in in L.A., or somewhere in between.
05:03When that ends, I do think that the Warriors will look at what is going on,
05:07which is one more year of Steph.
05:09Draymond for one more.
05:11Maybe it's reworked and it's two.
05:12And if it's Al, if it's Chris Stapps, you know it's going to be Guy, it's going to be Pods,
05:17whatever's going to be coming back, it's going to be Steph and Draymond and Steve, I think.
05:22And Steve, to me, becomes as big a part of that triad as anything.
05:27I'm not saying that Steph will march in and say, give me Kerr or else,
05:31but I do think when they look back at this year, disappointing, yes, injury-related, of course.
05:38Is it going to be better next year?
05:40Who knows, but you're coming back with the same kind of old team,
05:44so why not bring back the guy who's been here for 12 years?
05:48Yeah, I mean, although, like, I agree with you,
05:51but I just think it's uninspiring when the answer is,
05:56oh, bring him back, because, you know, why not?
05:59Or, for example, look at what someone just sent this text.
06:04510, I see you.
06:05Thank you for texting in.
06:06Unless we've got a better replacement, we might as well keep him.
06:11Try to ask a girl out with that tone.
06:13I mean, what are you doing Friday night?
06:15Because, I mean, I had, like, seven other people that I was looking to go out with,
06:19but, I mean, if you're free, I mean.
06:22I checked around.
06:23There's nothing going on, so you want to do something?
06:25You want to go out to dinner?
06:27Dutch?
06:28Go have these?
06:29Like, I just don't, I don't dig that energy,
06:31and I'm not asking you to be fake and be all, like, excited about Steve Kerr.
06:35I get it.
06:36He's been here for 12 years, and in the world of NBA coaching,
06:40that is, like, four lifetimes, as we just said.
06:44Like, I was in my 30s when he started.
06:46Crazy.
06:46That's nuts, okay?
06:48A lot has happened since Steve Kerr became the head coach of the Warriors.
06:53But I understand that tone.
06:55I'd almost like to take it in a different way, though,
06:57as opposed to saying, like, unless we've got something better to do,
07:00we should do this.
07:02Do you realize how awkward it would be if somebody else coached next year?
07:06Forget about the future.
07:08Depending on who, I guess.
07:09I guess, like, it's kind of like what you just said.
07:13If the Warriors have signaled to us,
07:16even through the direct words of Anthony Slater just a few weeks ago,
07:20the whole thing has come down to next year.
07:25Next year.
07:26All the contracts end.
07:28Steph and Draymond and Jimmy and his return,
07:33and then do you sign Kristaps to a one-year deal?
07:36Everything is all about next year.
07:39What a weird idea to have somebody else coach it.
07:44That just lands as awkward with me.
07:48Right.
07:48And I'm with you,
07:49and I do think that when you look at the future beyond next year,
07:53even if Steph is here,
07:54like, if next year happens and it doesn't go a certain way
07:58and you realize at that point that, all right,
08:01Steph either comes back for one more or maybe he retires,
08:04but when Steph retires and Draymond's done, Steve is also done.
08:08Steve will not coach the next iteration of these Golden State Warriors.
08:12I think you're right.
08:13I don't know, but I think you're right.
08:15I mean, I would go ahead and I would lock that up now.
08:17You're probably right.
08:18We used to do a thing where you put it in the cap,
08:20and that's kind of what you used to do,
08:24and you would lock it up from a long-term standpoint.
08:27But I can't imagine, let's just say it's next year
08:30and then Steph retires and Draymond's done,
08:33and Steve is like, all right, I'm 62.
08:35Let's do a rebuild.
08:37Until tomorrow night gets here,
08:39how does that make you Warrior fans feel?
08:43When we say, hey, like, tomorrow might be the day.
08:47Tomorrow might be the last game that Steve Kerr coaches
08:50with the Golden State Warriors.
08:52That concept and idea, how does it make you feel?
08:56What's the first thing that comes to your mind?
08:58Let's go to Dale in Palo Alto.
09:00Hi, Dale.
09:01Thanks for calling in.
09:02What's up?
09:04Hey, thanks.
09:05I love you guys.
09:06Greatest radio station, greatest radio shows.
09:09And by the way, the bench teams for your shows are great, too.
09:12You guys got a deep bench.
09:14It's good.
09:14Thanks, Dale.
09:15We appreciate that collectively.
09:18When you said, you know, do we want to see Kerr stay,
09:20I had to jump on the phone real quick before the 4.5% called in.
09:24Do you know what I mean by the 4.5%?
09:26Oh, totally.
09:26I have an idea.
09:27The lunatic fringe.
09:30No, I'm talking your actual survey one day,
09:33only 4.5% wanted Kaminga back.
09:36Oh.
09:37I believe.
09:38And it's that very loud 4.5%,
09:41just like our political environment,
09:43that we'll want to call in and jump all over him and blame him
09:46and blame Dunleavy and stuff.
09:48But Kerr's got five rings as a player,
09:51four as an NBA coach,
09:53and one as an Olympic coach.
09:55And basically, Kerr and Curry,
09:57they're the goats of their time.
10:00You can't compare generation to generation in my mind.
10:03And I can still remember the very first Super Bowl,
10:05so I'm older than almost everybody that calls in.
10:11But basically, when Kerr took over,
10:15Curry, Clay, and Dre, they were still babes.
10:17They were kids.
10:18So he can coach young players and stuff.
10:20So I want to see Kerr stay as long as he wants to.
10:23And I think he could go through the transition,
10:25but he might be tired and want to retire.
10:27Hell, he's, you know, with his winning record and stuff,
10:30he might just want to retire instead of go free and rebuild.
10:32But, you know, and this will come from a guy that three years ago
10:35wanted Draymond out.
10:37But I've come around on that.
10:39I see where he contributes.
10:40But my big question here,
10:42and you may all go offline and listen,
10:44is cannot Curry and Dre opt out of their contracts
10:48to do new, like, maybe two-year contracts at a lower rate
10:52that then would allow them to bring other players in
10:54and juggle things better and stuff like that?
10:56So the answer with Dre, Dale, thank you so much.
10:59Yeah, thanks, Dale.
10:59With Draymond, yes.
11:01With Steph, no.
11:02Yep.
11:02So Draymond has an opt-out going into this year.
11:06In theory, he would probably want to opt in,
11:09but if it allows the Warriors to do some other things,
11:13could you move this year's number down in exchange for another year?
11:17Sure, that's a possibility.
11:18Steph's not an opt situation.
11:20Steph has just got his contract next year.
11:22That's a done deal.
11:23And I would imagine if he wants another year after that,
11:25all he has to do is ask.
11:27That's kind of where Steph Curry sits in this organization.
11:30Whatever he wants, he's going to get.
11:32So that's the quick answer there.
