00:00Let's go to Sushi Steve in San Jose.
00:03Hi, Steve.
00:04What you doing?
00:06I'm in San Francisco, but yeah.
00:07So listen, guys, in high school, in high school, my favorite teacher was this guy named Tom
00:15Willard at Burlingham High School.
00:17And the reason I love this guy, I'll tell you, listen, the reason I love this guy is
00:22because he spit knowledge in a fun way.
00:25And he was the first teacher I've ever had in my life up to that point that made learning fun.
00:31So before the commercial break, you know, Willard was, you, Willard, you were spitting knowledge
00:37about the whole Kerr blasphemy because that's the topic that I just, I can't, if anybody
00:44says anything bad about Steve Kerr, I get really irritated and I can't hold it in.
00:48And so I was just happy that you were acknowledging that.
00:52And, you know, I get it.
00:56It sucks, the situation we're in.
00:58Like, I've never seen a dynasty end well.
01:00I thought the Warriors dynasty actually was going to end well because we had that Wiseman
01:05pick and we had, you know, we had high draft picks.
01:08And so I don't put this on Steve Kerr.
01:11I really don't.
01:12I put it more on, I mean, Bob Myers cut out at a great time.
01:15He cut out at a, if Bob Myers was still around, he'd be getting a lot of this blame, you
01:20know.
01:20So that's the thing.
01:22I mean, my thing is that if, if, if you're going to point out a flaw, you need, you need
01:27to point out a potential solution.
01:28And everyone, again, I'm getting this from not just 95, but I'm getting this from being
01:32online and just reading stupid stuff from people, you know, tweeting, whatever.
01:37And, and, and it just, and I get very defensive online.
01:41Like I'm not a, I usually just read and whatever, but when it's about Steve Kerr, I defend, I defend
01:47it.
01:47And I'm thinking, is it because I'm a homer?
01:49I don't think it's that.
01:50I think Steve Kerr's awesome.
01:52He'll get picked up by someone else super fast as a GM or a coach.
01:56And we're going to be like in the Bruce Bochy situation again.
01:59We're, we're going to be searching for a coach after the dynasty is over.
02:02You're like, that's, we shouldn't do that.
02:04Let's keep Steve Kerr.
02:06You know, Steve Kerr's doing the best that he can with a really bunch of bad tactics.
02:11That's honestly what it is.
02:13That's all guys.
02:13Okay, Steve, thanks for the shout out on my, uh, on my dad.
02:17He got, uh, he got home from the hospital yesterday.
02:20Everything's good.
02:20Spitting knowledge in a fun way.
02:22That's a great way to describe a teacher that you like.
02:25Oh, he was a phenomenal teacher.
02:27Absolutely phenomenal teacher.
02:29I, I, this is what I'll say though, about the whole, like getting defensive about Steve
02:33Kerr.
02:34Cause I've clearly done that a time or two or a thousand here on, on this show.
02:38Um, nobody needs to wonder about what my opinion is of, of Steve, but what I was talking about
02:45earlier this hour, wasn't so much about like, I don't, it's not right now for me about sparring
02:51with people about whether Steve is, or is not doing a good job.
02:55If, if you are currently in a spot where you think, um, he's made some mistakes and, uh,
03:02and, and, and I don't think he's the right coach for the Warriors over the next few years.
03:06I actually don't even think that that's the craziest opinion.
03:10I do think that things get pinned on him that are not him.
03:13Like if I, man, if I have another drive to work where someone calls in and goes, um, I
03:21can't believe that Steve put this roster together like this.
03:25I'm just going to like, I'm going to go crazy.
03:28Like he doesn't put the roster together.
03:30I don't know why Steve likes all of these crappy players.
03:33He, that's he not in charge.
03:35He is not in charge of the roster part of the collective, but he is, but the biggest
03:40evidence is actually the biggest emotional linchpin of this whole conversation.
03:45You'll scream and yell about Jonathan Kaminga.
03:48If Steve had his way, he never would have even been picked.
03:52So like, well, he got his way now.
03:54Cause he's, uh, about to tip off for the Hawks.
03:57Right, right.
03:58So, but again, I digress.
04:01What I was saying earlier this hour is I wonder if people have the capacity to just look at
04:06this through his eyes.
04:09How would you feel if, and I know some of your answers are, well, for $16 million, people
04:15could hate me all they want.
04:17That's fine.
04:17How would you feel if, how would you handle the fan base, the media, whatever it may be,
04:24if this had been your last 12 years, you've coached this team for 12 years.
04:30There are four rings, six trips to the finals.
04:33And then when you get to the end, when you get to the end and the inevitable takes place,
04:41which is age, injury, defections.
04:45And in that moment where it doesn't just start to decline, but is actually not even available
04:51to you in that moment, you go out, you coach games with a lacrosse player at point guard
04:57in an NBA game.
04:58And then when it doesn't go well, there's a line of people around the block to go,
05:03boy, boy, are you in the wrong job?
05:07Who gave you this gig?
05:09Yeah.
05:10How would, again, this is not, your opinion is your opinion, but how would you feel?
05:16How would you feel if you were him?
05:18You would probably be annoyed, but at the same time, he can rightly look at it and say,
05:24he probably hasn't had a great year.
05:25And he said that to us as well.
05:27And he said it about games and situations.
05:30And it's the interesting thing about coaching.
05:32And we all look at it the way we want to look at it.
05:35Having coached at a number of different levels, I can tell you that when I had really good
05:40teams, I was a phenomenal coach.
05:42And I was the coach of the year at Drake high school in 2004.
05:472004, we went 32 and seven.
05:49I won my third straight title and I was the coach of the year for the entire school.
05:55I got an award at the district office.
05:57I had eight seniors.
05:58I had a phenomenally talented team.
06:01And to be honest, that was probably the least coaching I've ever done.
06:05I showed up with the key to the gym.
06:07I opened the gym.
06:08I put the net up and then they just were phenomenal.
06:12Nobody could touch us.
06:14But, oh, coach of the year.
06:15Meanwhile, I coached a team that was 0-26.
06:17I told that story.
06:19That was my best coaching job ever.
06:21I mean, it could have been a little better.
06:22It could have won one game.
06:23We lost by 25.
06:24That was our best result.
06:26And it was only because Scott Carroll, rest in peace, was a co-worker of mine and he refereed.
06:32We shot 39 free throws that game.
06:34Oh.
06:34I got the whistle.
06:36Oh.
06:37Blow the whistle.
06:38He blew it.
06:38I got every call into the sun.
06:40We still lost by 25.
06:41Long story short, you look at Steve Kerr this year, is he suddenly a bad coach because he's
06:47got a lacrosse player at point guard and he doesn't have his two best players?
06:51Or when they go 73-9, was he phenomenal?
06:55Because, oh, best record in regular season history.
06:58Well, there's probably, yeah.
06:59There's an over-elevation at times.
07:02And then there's an over-degradation at times.
07:07Yes.
07:09No question.
07:10No, no, no question.
07:11So, like, I get that.
07:13Do you know, is there, I guess what you're saying is, within the career of Steve Kerr,
07:18is there a sprinkling of Forrest Gump?
07:22Is there a little bit?
07:23Life is like a box of chocolates?
07:24Well, if those of you who don't get the reference, it's sort of the just seemingly whoops,
07:29accidentally ending up in just the most wonderful spot.
07:32I remember when he was an Alabama football player and he just kept running and just ran
07:36right out of the stadium.
07:37You know, there's Phil Jackson.
07:40Phil Jackson.
07:41Best coach of all time.
07:42Maybe.
07:43He had Michael Jordan.
07:44And then he had Kobe and Shaq.
07:46Right.
07:46Right.
07:46And when he didn't have those people, he didn't win.
07:49So, sure.
07:51Like, I don't know.
07:52Nobody is saying Steve Kerr is the MVP of the dynasty.
07:56Nobody's saying that at all.
07:57In fact, I don't even want this conversation to go into a yay Steve or boo Steve.
08:03That's boring to me and I know where that goes.
08:06I just want to know if that was your career, how would you feel?
08:12You know what I mean?
08:13You get to the, I mean, this is relatable to someone who spends, you spend 15 years with
08:19your company and you're the best at what you do.
08:22You're the best salesperson at the company.
08:24And then you sort of get toward the end of your career and the industry, whoop, it changes
08:30a lot and it kind of goes sideways and, you know, there are younger people that are coming
08:35up and doing it.
08:36Maybe you're doing it a little bit better, but whatever.
08:38You're still, you're still there.
08:40You're still doing it.
08:40You're still active.
08:41You're still succeeding on some level.
08:46That company usually makes you a cake.
08:51They make you a cake and they, they set aside a day for you.
08:57They don't throw stuff at you.
08:59Depends on, uh, if you have a bad year selling, then you might get shown the door.
09:04You might.
09:05You might get run.
09:06And he might.
09:07Right.
09:07I don't think he's going to get fired.
09:08They wouldn't like pitch it that way.
09:10You know, he made mutual parting away.
09:13Yeah.
09:13Steve wants to spend more time with his grandkids.
09:16Exactly.
09:16Sure.
09:17Sure.
09:18It just, it always goes a certain way.
09:20It isn't a guarantee that it's going to go that way.
09:23It just depends on how things, you know, eventually end up.
09:27And right now in this spot with this team and this record, if I look at this season right
09:32now and I want to, you know, make that pie and slice out where you put the, the reasons,
09:38not the blame, not the excuses, the reasons why the warriors are where they are.
09:43Steve Kerr does not get a very big pie slice of the pie in my pie.
09:47Like half the pie would be half the pie would probably be injury.
09:51You lost Butler.
09:53You lost Curry.
09:54And because you lost those guys, that's a big chunk of why you are where you are.
09:59And then there's a big portion of it, which is you're just an older team.
10:02Yeah.
10:03Which would be the roster construction portion.
10:05Sure.
10:05Like it or dislike it.
10:07The fact that you went all in on older guys has led to having, you know, guys who aren't
10:12as available.
10:13I think what you're talking about is almost like human level inevitable too.
10:17This is the way we argue.
10:19Anybody married out there?
10:20Oh yeah.
10:21You ever been married?
10:22Everybody listening.
10:23You ever been married?
10:24All right.
10:24So you've got the big stuff, right?
10:28Like, I don't know.
10:29I'll make one up.
10:30Your kid wants to go to college out of state.
10:32And one of the parents thinks that you can afford it.
10:35And the other one doesn't.
10:36And the one who says you can afford it.
10:39I mean, come on.
10:40This kid is, they've been a great kid.
10:42They've achieved.
10:43It's amazing.
10:44They got into Michigan.
10:46They got into Michigan.
10:48We have to support that.
10:49And the other parent is like, I do want to support that.
10:52But we have, we have a whole family to support.
10:55We've got retirement to think about.
10:57That's an actual, real issue.
11:00That's a big deal.
11:02You don't fight about that.
11:03You fight about the toilet seat.
11:06You left it up again.
11:07That's what you fight about.
11:09I don't like the way you snore.
11:12I don't like the way you make noise when you brush your teeth.
11:14Drip over your shoes one more time.
11:17So.
11:17I can listen to about 12 more things.
11:19What time is it?
11:19Keep going.
11:20It's a little risky right now.
11:21I'm going to make some more bets.
11:22Go ahead.
11:23435.
11:24We're in the, might be heading over in the park right now.
11:26Yeah.
11:27They've been listening a little bit.
11:28So, so I, I hear that.
11:30That's what I hear.
11:32The, the, the larger issue is what you just talked about.
11:35Why are the Warriors where they are right now?
11:37Oof.
11:37I hate the answer because they're supposed to be.
11:41Basically.
11:42They're supposed to be.
11:43But what's the argument about?
11:45The argument ends up being about, okay, it's Jonathan Kaminga and DNPs.
11:51And where would we be if we had kept him?
11:54I'd argue the exact same spot, by the way.
11:56It's the damn rotations, Mark.
11:58He loves to play little people.
12:00He doesn't like, yeah, he doesn't like tall people, even though his front line are now both seven feet.
12:05One of them's seven three.
12:06He hates young players, unless they've got floppy red hair.
12:11He keeps playing Draymond Green.
12:13Right.
12:14So this is all, this is minutia.
12:17This is minutia.
12:19Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler are hurt.
12:23That's, that's your answer.
12:24Answer.
12:25I think, I think that's your, that's your answer for why the Warriors look the way they do.
12:32Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler are hurt.
12:35I do think that what you said about, about inevitability is really, I think even more the thing.
12:43Now, if you had Steph and Jimmy, you would be in a better spot standings wise, but it still would
12:49have the same level of inevitability, which is Steph turns 38 on Saturday and tomorrow's higher or lower is dedicated
12:57to his birthday.
12:59By the way, we're going to be out at Splash.
13:01Come see us.
13:02Yes.
13:03Or are we supposed to talk about the thing?
13:05Are we supposed to talk about the thing?
13:07The thing that.
13:08I'm just going to call it the thing until we get a yes or a no on whether or not
13:11we're supposed to talk about that.
13:12But we'll be out there.
13:13We'll be out there.
13:14Come see us at Splash.
13:15But boy, this answer from Lucas is very long.
13:18I thought it was a yes or a no question.
13:20Are we supposed to talk about this or no?
13:22We'll find out.
13:23They're going to talk about whether or not we can talk about it.
13:26But when you got your best player turning 38, the idea of inevitability is omnipresent.
13:32And that's where we sit.
13:34And, you know, Draymond just turned 36.
13:36And last week's higher or lower was going to be dedicated to that.
13:40But it'll be used now as our play-in game.
13:43Play-in game?
13:44Yeah, because Lucas is out tomorrow.
13:47We've got two people here in their stead because Grandy will be with us.
13:51Grandy's going to be with us at Splash.
13:52So Cam and Ken.
13:53Yes.
13:54Cam and Ken will be here.
13:55And they are going to have an email head-to-head battle on higher or lower.
13:59Winner gets to be the contestant tomorrow.
14:01Okay, so Cam and Ken are like the seven and the eight seed.
14:04Essentially, yeah.
14:05And they've got to play their way in.
14:06That's right.
14:07Because we don't do higher or lower with five people.
14:09No, it's too much.
14:09It's too many people.
14:10It's you and Grandy.
14:11It'll be either Ken or Cam.
14:13Cam is a former champ.
14:15Ken would be looking for his first title.
14:16But they've got to play their way in.
14:19Will you BCC me on the emails, please?
14:22Absolutely.
14:23I really want to.
14:24I'll BCC both of you guys, all you guys.
14:26I want to watch this.
14:27Yeah.
14:29That's awesome.
14:30So I'm going to copy-paste the ten items and the tiebreaker and obviously remove the
14:34answer and then email it off to him.
14:36So anyway, we've been talking about whether or not Steve Kerr just kind of looks exhausted
14:42because we've heard it a lot.
14:44I think we've felt it a time or two.
14:46And I think it's led to a lot of questions.
14:48Steve, you still want to be doing this?
14:50Yesterday we were asking, the way I asked it yesterday was, this is kind of new for you.
14:55You're used to coaching Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler and Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson and
15:01going deep in the playoffs.
15:02And now you're coaching games where you're like, Guy, get in there.
15:05And so how is this different in your coaching career?
15:10This is the way he answered it.
15:12Every year is different as a coach and you adapt and adjust.
15:16So I enjoy it.
15:18I'm having a great time this year.
15:20I'd love to win those games and get into the playoffs, but it's all a great challenge.
15:24And I love our guys and we just got to keep plugging away.
15:28I don't want to have this be the first question, but when I hear that, what pops to my mind
15:33is
15:33asking people, do you believe him?
15:37He says he has said this a bunch of times.
15:39I'm having a great time.
15:40Yeah.
15:41I'm enjoying coaching.
15:42I'll never leave Steph.
15:44Believe him?
15:45I do believe him.
15:46And, you know, he's talking about coaching and the way I hear him answer it is he's really
15:50talking about coaching games and then being at practice if they ever do get to practice
15:55and coaching the practice.
15:57But you think about all the other stuff.
15:59Hey, Steve, how much are you enjoying the travel?
16:01You know, when you play a game and then you get on a plane,
16:05you fly somewhere and you got to play that same day.
16:07And what do you think about hotel rooms, Steve?
16:10He'd be honest with you on that one.
16:11He'd tell you he hates it.
16:12Right.
16:13So how much time has he spent this week saying that there should be 10 fewer games in the
16:16schedule?
16:17Exactly.
16:17So if you ask him about, you know, are you enjoying this?
16:20And he talks about young people and their new experiences.
16:23Of course, you love working with the young people when you're a coach and he's 60 and
16:28all the rest of it.
16:29So when you get to that spot, that's the fun stuff.
16:32It's all the rest of it.
16:33I'm sure that drives him crazy.
16:35Grandy was just bringing something up with regard to something Steve said right when
16:39Kevin Durant left and then it was going to go to him.
16:42And then Lucas gave him a snack.
16:44And are you good?
16:45Like I was the whole snack.
16:47I literally looked at him and I go, hey, just say it, say it on the air.
16:50And he's like, it was one ship.
16:53I'm good now.
16:53I thought that there was going to be breaking news because you pointed to him.
16:57And normally that's where he goes in your ear.
16:59If I'm talking and says, no, Jawan Jennings is not a Titan.
17:02But anyway, go ahead, Grandy.
17:04What did he say?
17:05Remind everyone.
17:07The year after Kevin Durant left, it was probably pretty deep into the season because it was
17:10that terrible year.
17:11Obviously, no KD and no Clay because he was out with the injury and Steph got hurt pretty
17:15early on.
17:16And he said something along the lines of how he was enjoying coaching that group more
17:20than last year's group.
17:22And it kind of went crazy online.
17:24And he actually got pretty upset of the way that people took it because people took it as
17:28in I didn't like coaching KD, which is not what he meant.
17:31But it feels like it's fitting in the past where he has maybe enjoyed coaching units
17:36that aren't as good as some of those other ones.
17:38It's probably more coaching.
17:40I would think like what Gibbs was talking about with his with his undefeated or really good
17:45team versus the team that didn't win a game.
17:46If I'm sitting here talking to Will Richard, I've got more to say as a coach than if I'm
17:52talking to Steph Curry.
17:54For sure.
17:55Well, think about that team when it was, you know, Iguodala and Livingston and Steph and
18:00KD and Draymond and it was right.
18:03Savants and over the place, you kind of knew that you were going to win for the most part.
18:07And you also knew that the regular season was really mostly meaningless.
18:11So there's a certain amount of mundaneness that goes with that, where these guys know
18:17everything that they need to know.
18:18You call a couple of plays.
18:19Sure.
18:20But here's an idea.
18:21Get the ball to Kevin Durant.
18:22And other than that, it's not really the same level of coaching.
