00:00Wednesday, oh my god, basketball, sports, amazing.
00:04Friday was like, ugh.
00:07I was so happy that it was a Friday, though.
00:10I was just like, I'm going to open a bottle of wine and just...
00:14I was kind of like Steve Kerr.
00:16We're going to take the weekend.
00:17Just kind of get away from this.
00:19Yeah.
00:19We'll come back with a statement on Monday.
00:21Let's go to Dibs, half in the bag.
00:24Yeah, you get to halftime and it was like, all right.
00:26Did you drink a lot this weekend?
00:28On Friday.
00:28You did?
00:29Yeah.
00:30Every time they missed a three, took a shot.
00:32No, you didn't.
00:33They missed a shot.
00:34Oh, God, you're still with us?
00:35I took a shot.
00:36No, you didn't.
00:37Missed a shot, take a shot.
00:39Did you ever play the...
00:42I think this was the police Roxanne drinking game.
00:47You ever played the Roxanne drinking game?
00:48For sure.
00:49You have?
00:49Absolutely.
00:50Oh, yeah.
00:52Please explain.
00:53Every time they say Roxanne, you take a drink.
00:57It's a little deeper than that.
00:58It's a shot of beer.
01:00Every time they say Roxanne is a shot of beer, and then I think every, it's like every chorus
01:08or whatever, then it's a shot of alcohol.
01:13And it goes fast, dog.
01:16It's a red light.
01:18It's Roxanne.
01:19No, he says it like a thousand times.
01:22Rox.
01:22And you're like, shot of beer?
01:24Trust me.
01:25It goes fast.
01:27Fast.
01:27Yeah.
01:29It's been a long time since I played that game.
01:31Anyway, let's go to Tony in the city.
01:33Tony, thank you for calling Willard and Dibbs.
01:35What's up?
01:36Oh, hey.
01:37Right on, fellas.
01:38Can you guys hear me okay?
01:38Okay, I'm on the freeway right now.
01:40We got you, man.
01:40It's raining pouring down.
01:42Okay, I got my radio turned down.
01:43I'm a first-time caller.
01:44I want to make sure I'm doing everything okay.
01:45You're doing great, Tony.
01:47So far.
01:48Right on.
01:49Well, Dibbs, love the game of your plan.
01:51I was feeling the same pan as you guys.
01:54But I just want to say, so I don't want Steve Kerr to be out as a head coach.
01:59Really don't.
02:00But I heard you guys talking before the commercial.
02:02And if we were to get someone else, I want to throw someone by you,
02:06which is Dan Hurley from the UConn head coach.
02:09I feel like his energy and his passion for the game is enough to corral Draymond
02:14and also maybe bring in some new ideas that Steph, maybe not new ideas,
02:18but he could adapt to Steph's game.
02:22Um, I'll take you guys' call off the air.
02:24First-time caller.
02:25Love you guys.
02:25You guys are pure comedy.
02:27And, uh, take care, fellas.
02:28Tony, guys, man.
02:29All right.
02:29Appreciate you.
02:30Thank you for your energy.
02:31Appreciate you.
02:31And drive safe, Tony.
02:32Yeah, whatever freeway you're on.
02:34He's on the freeway.
02:35It's raining.
02:35Yeah, he's on the freeway.
02:36And it's raining.
02:37Could be anywhere.
02:38But, I mean, I like Dan Hurley, the idea in a vacuum, but not now.
02:43Do you?
02:43And not here.
02:44I like Dan Hurley, the idea of, like, bringing in somebody with energy to, like,
02:49reinvigorate a young team and, like, be the guy to lead a bunch of 20-year-old
02:54somethings.
02:55Did you like him when he was nose-butting the referee in the tournament?
02:59Didn't really mind it because I know that there was more to it than just, like, you
03:04know, the first time that he ever talked to this person, he head-butted him.
03:07No, there was a long back and forth, and I get that.
03:09And so we only saw what we saw, and we all think that, you know, he went after him.
03:14No, he was just excited, and I'm sure that they had a much deeper relationship, and it
03:20was probably a little bit of an inappropriate interaction, but it didn't bother me.
03:25He was excited.
03:26You know me.
03:27I don't mind when people authentically get excited in sports.
03:32I think it's really weird that some people try to police that.
03:35You know what I mean?
03:36Yeah.
03:37Like, celebrate, but no, no, no, not that much.
03:39Don't do champagne if it's only round one.
03:42Like, stop.
03:43Just, like, have fun.
03:44Go to a baseball game in the Dominican.
03:46They're dancing in the first inning.
03:47Like, just have a great time.
03:48You win in the play-in, and you want to say that it felt like a championship?
03:51Do it.
03:52Yeah.
03:52Celebrate.
03:53Enjoy.
03:53I love Dan Hurley, but two things.
03:56Not now, not here.
03:57Yeah.
03:58First of all, and I'll, like, maybe I'll just admit sort of a hole in the game here.
04:03I'm not mentally at a space right now where I can even think about who would be the right
04:09replacement for Steve Kerr.
04:11For me, we're going to have to get to the point where he actually needs replacing, and
04:15that's actually going to happen.
04:17And then I think I could think about that, because at that time, maybe we'd have a little
04:21bit better idea of the philosophical shift that's taking place.
04:25Maybe we'll have a little bit better idea of what draft pick they have and kind of what
04:29direction they're going.
04:31But if you're telling me, you know, our next big acquisition could be LeBron, and it could
04:37be A.J.
04:37DeBonsa.
04:38Well, those are two completely, I mean, you want to talk about a fork in the road.
04:42So I don't know who that coach is.
04:44But I also think Dan Hurley has already turned down the Lakers.
04:47I don't think he's really looking to leave UConn.
04:50And then our caller, Tony, also said one other thing, which is I think Hurley would have the
04:55energy to corral Draymond.
04:56Look, if you're going out in the world looking for somebody to corral Draymond, good luck to
05:01you.
05:02Like, that actually, to me, it underscores the problem with the idea of Steve Kerr not
05:09coaching the Warriors next year.
05:10Who exactly on planet Earth can come in and immediately navigate both the end of Steph Curry's
05:18career and then just anything Draymond?
05:21And you may respond to that by saying, well, that shouldn't even be the organizational
05:26focus.
05:27And you might be right.
05:28At the same time, it still has to be done.
05:30He's on the team.
05:31Unless he's not on the team.
05:32Right.
05:34But I don't, like, Draymond works solely through the idea of respect.
05:38We hear him talk about it with every opponent that he goes through.
05:42Kawhi Leonard, respect.
05:43Carl Anthony Towns, nope.
05:45Rudy Gobert, nope.
05:46You know what I mean?
05:47He's solely about the idea of respect.
05:49How are you going to bring in some newbie who's never coached an NBA game in his life
05:54and have Draymond's respect right out of the gate?
05:57I don't know how you do that.
05:59You don't.
06:00And you won't.
06:00I mean, the guy's been playing for so long.
06:03He's in the top 40 all time in playoff games played.
06:05And he's a vet.
06:07And Steph's a vet.
06:07And they've done it here.
06:08And they've won here.
06:09So the only way you would move off of Steve Kerr, in my opinion, would be to either elevate
06:14Jerry Stackhouse, a guy who is 51 and he played a long time in the association and he's been
06:19there and he's done that.
06:21And he's got, I think, enough of experience as a coach now to where if you elevated him,
06:27he could handle it.
06:28Or Terry Stotts, a guy who's coached actually almost as long, if not a little bit longer
06:32than Steve Kerr in the association.
06:34And so if you were going to make that move, I don't think you could bring in a college
06:38guy, somebody who had never been in the pros like Dan Hurley or even somebody else, if you
06:44wanted to go to like Shaka Smart or another one of these like bright young coaches, somebody
06:49who's never been in the association.
06:51It's one thing to bring Tony Vitello to the Giants, right, where you've got a few vets
06:56and Tony V had never been in the bigs.
06:59He's never played there.
07:00He never managed there.
07:00And you've got three or four guys who are veterans, four or five, maybe Robbie Ray and
07:05Logan Webb.
07:05And but it's baseball and it's not as much as with basketball.
07:09And you're not going to have anybody, quote, corral Draymond Green.
07:12That's not going to happen.
07:13My mind doesn't even go there.
07:14Like Grandy just whispered in my ear and I've seen this rumor thrown out there.
07:18And I don't even know if you call it a rumor yet.
07:19But this idea, the concept, Todd Golden, right, he's at Florida.
07:23He has ties to the Bay Area.
07:26Like, no matter what name you're going to bring up, I'm just currently in this spot
07:30where I'm like, I don't even know how to wrap my head around that.
07:35So I have to do this.
07:36I have to, for me, I have to segment this.
07:39You have to tell me first that Steve's not coming back.
07:43Then I can start to think about what might be next.
07:47But any name that you bring up right now, I'm going to go, no, I'll take Steve.
07:55Any name, I'll take Steve.
07:58Well, of course.
07:59Well, there you go.
08:00So that's my answer right now.
08:01My answer is Steve.
08:03Like, do you want this guy?
08:05You want that guy?
08:05Steve.
08:06Steve.
08:07And if it's definitely not Steve, now we can go to round two.
08:12But that's my round one choice.
08:14Okay, and if it's anybody but Steve, if it's not Steve, then what are we doing with the roster?
08:21Are you keeping Steph and Draymond?
08:23And by the way, Todd Golden is 11 months older than Al Horford, if you want some perspective.
08:29You know, Al's about to be 40, and then Todd will be 41 in July.
08:33I just did the quick Googlage on that.
08:34So, yeah, Todd Golden is a great coach, and I think he'll be an amazing NBA coach at some point.
08:40But not for a team that's going to have, you know, three or four guys that are his age and
08:45guys who have done a lot more in the association than he has, which is right now nothing.
08:49So, if it's not going to be Steve, are you keeping Steph and are you keeping Draymond?
08:54Because if you are, well, then to me, you need to bring in somebody that they know and they respect.
09:00And maybe it's somebody like, I don't mean Mike Brown is currently busy, but somebody like that.
09:05It's just like, I think we could all admit, it's an incredibly difficult task on so many levels.
09:12First of all, following a legend is never an easy thing to do.
09:15But second of all, you know, boy, we've spit out this idea of two timelines so much.
09:20Whoever this, if there has to be a new coach this year, and that coach both has to be the
09:27guy who welcomes the either one, two, three, four,
09:3111 or 12th pick in the draft to the team, but also navigates the end of a legendary career, navigates
09:39the end of a personality like Draymond and his Hall of Fame career,
09:44navigates the return to action in the middle of the season of Jimmy Butler, and anyone or anything else that
09:51might be going on with this roster.
09:57Okay, that's a hell of a description.
10:00You put that on LinkedIn, I'm going to keep scrolling.
10:02Well, especially if you're going to be somebody who's never coached in the league.
10:05So not only all those things, but go ahead and like learn the league.
10:09Like you are Todd Golden, who I think is great, or Dan Hurley or whoever else.
10:14Like you've never coached in the association, and now you get to do that.
10:18Plus, you have to do all these other things, like good luck, and all the media that we talk about
10:23with Tony Vitello that he's had to kind of navigate and learn,
10:26and the road trips and all the rest of it.
10:28Yeah, and whoever that person is has to talk to us every week.
10:32Right.
10:33Which, I mean.
10:34Oh, jeez.
10:35We hold their feet to the fire, you know.
10:37Brutal.
10:38Tough, yeah.
10:39It's a tough talk, yeah.
10:41The more I think about like what you're describing, like whoever that would be if it isn't Steve,
10:46like how can it not be Steve?
10:48And I guess that's where I keep going back to, and the big hug, the three-way hug,
10:52and the comments, and Draymond, and Steve, and everyone's circumspect, and all the rest of it.
10:57I think about the reality of what that would mean.
11:00It would mean that somebody else comes in and is the head coach for this.
11:05It would mean, in my mind, it would mean that Steve is not digging what is being put in front
11:09of him,
11:10and he doesn't want to be the coach anymore.
11:13I don't really see it as a scenario.
11:15I know a lot do.
11:16I know a lot of people love it.
11:17I think Joe Lacob wants Steve Kerr to be the coach.
11:20I think that Joe Lacob wants Steve Kerr to be the coach that he wants him to be, though.
11:27Like, that's what I think this is.
11:29I think Kerr wants to be the warrior coach, and Joe Lacob wants Kerr to be the warrior coach.
11:33But Joe Lacob would like Steve Kerr to be the Steve Kerr that he wants him to be,
11:37and Steve Kerr kind of wants to be the Steve Kerr that he wants to be.
11:41And you have to find out if there's common ground.
11:44Here's from the ESPN article this morning.
11:47Slates and Momo, they worked together on this.
11:50It was a collaboration sensation.
11:52That's a buck.
11:54And thank you, Grandy.
11:57I think this is the, I'll call it the phrase that pays.
12:01It's a little bit more than a phrase.
12:02But let me read this and get this out to everybody.
12:06Y'all can react.
12:07Again, we're taking your phone calls right now on whether or not you think it's time.
12:11And you know what that means.
12:13Steve Kerr even said, these jobs have an expiration date.
12:16Do you believe that April 20th, happy 420, 2026, is that day?
12:23888-957-9570.
12:25We're taking your calls right now.
12:27Do you think it's time?
12:28But listen to this from the article.
12:31More than anything, team sources said,
12:34Lacob will want to hear Kerr express a hunger to continue executing the nitty-gritty details of the daily job.
12:43Not a reluctant acceptance that he should continue coaching purely out of loyalty to Green and Curry.
12:50And the sentimentality of riding out the era.
12:54That's why, if Kerr decides he wants to return, there's a desire from management for him to sign a multi
13:03-year deal, according to team sources.
13:06So that's from Slates and Momo.
13:09And that's, I think it's very important.
13:11Because this idea of like a chasm between Kerr and Lacob, I feel like is getting sort of miscast today.
13:18I don't think there's some sort of fundamental argument between the two.
13:21I mean, Lacob is literally saying here, if he stays, I want him for more than one year.
13:27Because I don't want this to feel like some sort of nostalgia tour.
13:32Right.
13:32The last dance thing.
13:33This article for me was important.
13:35It was the first time that I think I heard ownership's thoughts expressed through the media where I was like,
13:42I get that.
13:44You have a point.
13:45Lacob has a point here.
13:46There's no question.
13:48Um, but I personally believe Steve will be able to answer that question.
13:53I don't think Steve is only doing it to hang out for Steph.
13:58I know it sounds like that when he goes, I'll never leave Steph.
14:02But I don't, he's too competitive for that.
14:04Right.
14:05He wants to win.
14:06And has he not been like drilled down on the nitty gritty of the season?
14:10Like that's the part of it, of that, uh, that paragraph that you read that I wonder about because it
14:15feels to me like Steve Curry is really all about still the nitty gritty of this.
14:20And, you know, we read the Nick Fidel article from last week from the athletic friend of the program who
14:25will join us.
14:25And he talked about, you know, Steve being in Detroit off a five game losing streak and they were just
14:31having like a shoot around or, you know, not an actual practice, but guys were just in the gym.
14:36And Steve was there and Steve was there and trying to, you know, coach guys up and look at other
14:40players and whatnot.
14:41And so I think that Steve is actually all about the nitty gritty that, that, that quote or that, that
14:47paragraph is talking about.
14:48I mean, I've never, I've never felt for a minute of my life that Steve Curry is out here just
14:55collecting a check and hanging out with his buddy Steph.
14:58Like, have you ever felt that for a minute?
15:00No, like he's just in this to be a part of, of the Steph train.
15:03Like, I just, I think that everybody needs to feel and hear that there's an openness to maybe not overhaul
15:10this, but tweak it.
15:12Why wouldn't you tweak it?
15:14And I, like what Steph said, and we have it now, this sounds like somebody who gets, you know, we,
15:21we need to tweak it.
15:23This is after the game on Friday.
15:24I've only been in one locker room for the last 17 years.
15:28And before you win the title, there was only like those first two years, like you're building the foundation for
15:33what a championship team looks like, even though you had no idea what that really meant.
15:36Then you accomplish it.
15:36Then everything else is based off of that.
15:38And it's been that way since, you know, 2015.
15:41So I think we can reshape the narrative, like knowing the back of our mind, like that is the ultimate
15:46goal.
15:47But we have to get back to the basics of what makes a good basketball team, a competitive basketball team
15:52every single night.
15:53I understand how, realize how hard it is to win in this, in this league, but can we rethink, you
15:59know, how we do things with the foundation that we've established?
16:02We don't have to keep saying championship, championship, championship every day, even though we've experienced that.
16:07Can we just build the foundation again with what this team needs to do with the way that the game
16:12is played now, how fast it is, how young and athletic it is, all of those things.
16:16We have to kind of put everything on the drawing board to get back to just being competitive every single
16:21night.
16:21He's so good.
16:22Yep.
16:22I mean, that's, that's it.
16:24That's to me, that's it.
16:25That's the middle ground that he just created.
16:27Can Joe and Steve both get there?
16:30It's like a Venn diagram.
16:32Right.
16:32I mean, you can get there, but what exactly does that mean?
16:35And what Steph is saying in a vacuum is true and it's accurate, but you also want to try to
16:41win while Steph is here.
16:42You're not just going to, you know, trade Jimmy Butler and his salary next year for whatever, some $52 million
16:50expiring bum and a bunch of picks.
16:53So you can like load up for 2032.
16:55You're still going to try to win.
16:57So what he's saying is get back to the foundation of, you know, playing good basketball and being a good
17:02team.
17:02And the league now is young and athletic and we're not.
17:05And so that's not as easy as, you know, snap your fingers and bring in four or five guys who
17:10are young and athletic.
17:11Like, no, get in the lab.
17:12Like, that's what I'm hearing him say.
17:14That's an awareness of what others might say is the game passing you by.
17:20The league is different.
17:22It's young and athletic.
17:23You're not.
17:25So step one is probably get some youth and athleticism.
17:30Right.
17:30But also, how do we combat that?
17:33There's always a yin to the yang.
17:35There always is.
17:36It's remember the read option and Colin Kaepernick was going to run the league and there was nothing anybody could
17:42do.
17:43And then defenses were like, what if we do this?
17:46It's like, oh, well, we hadn't thought of that.
17:48So now we're going to do this.
17:50And that's constantly what sports leagues are doing.
17:54And so the Warriors have got to go figure that out.
17:57No, I'm not saying it's going to be easy.
17:59And yes, your age is what your age is.
18:03Right.
18:03But obviously, Steph still has a place in this league.
18:07Draymond still has a place in this league.
18:10Kristaps, Al, I'm not sure.
18:13But there's pieces to the puzzle.
18:15They need additions and a tweak.
18:18And I don't know if it'll work, but go try.
18:22Right.
18:22And all I'm saying is that the tweak is not a one-off season thing where, oh, you know, you
18:28get a draft pick and you sign a couple of guys and there's the tweak.
18:31Yeah, we're back.
18:32We're good.
18:33And what he said about championship, he's right.
18:35Like, it doesn't have to be about just that.
18:37And Steph is 38 and he's going to have one more year, maybe longer if he gets an extension.
18:42But the long-term future of this team is going to have to be either drafted players or undrafted young
18:49people or free agents who are young.
18:51And you have to turn it over.
18:52Deborah and Hayward.
18:53Hi, Deborah.
18:54Thank you for calling.
18:55What's up?
18:58Is Deborah there?
19:01Deborah?
19:03Go on.
19:04Okay.
19:05Go on.
19:06Uh, go on.
19:07Oh, I think that's Deborah calling back.
19:09She got disconnected.
19:10I want to hear from Deborah.
19:12So Deborah and then Deborah again?
19:15I mean, it was just my guess.
19:16Same number.
19:17Phone number looked very similar.
19:18Could be.
19:19There were similar digits.
19:21I mean, you talk about a, I mean, the reboot and I can't help but think about San Antonio where
19:27it was a 2019 pick, a 2020 pick, 2021, 23, 24, 25.
19:33No, it takes forever and it's awful.
19:34But that's when you're starting from zero and the Warriors aren't.
19:37Well, they will be.
19:39They will be soon.
19:40Maybe.
19:40Right.
19:41I don't know what they're going to do between now and then.
19:43Right.
19:43I mean, they could bring in a free agent, I guess.
19:46I mean, at some point this year.
19:48I mean, I don't know, man.
19:50The constitution of every season is different.
19:52So I, you know, I know how we're all feeling right now.
19:55We're all feeling right now like this is old, decrepit, and impossible to keep healthy.
20:00But I don't know that that's the case.
20:02LeBron James just played a healthy season.
20:04He's 41.
20:05Yeah.
20:06Then, then, then the two young guys got hurt and he went out and led the rest of the scrums
20:11to a game one win over Houston.
20:14I know they didn't have KD, but still it can happen.
20:18That guy is like, unlike any other athlete we've ever seen.
20:22Yeah.
20:23Except for like Steph has some of those characteristics.
20:26He's not as large of a body, but I mean, LeBron adjusted his role mid season.
20:33And it's why the Lakers are doing so well.
20:36Maybe Steph and Jimmy and all that.
20:38Maybe they got to do the same thing.
20:39I thought to me, that's what he was saying.
20:41Right.
20:42And you can adjust your role and that's great, but who's going to take on the role that you
20:46normally have, which is best player.
20:48And that's the problem right now with them.
20:50Sure, sure, sure.
20:50Because, you know, LeBron adjusted his role because you have Luka Doncic and he is amazing.
20:55And then he got hurt and Austin Reeves is also really good.
20:58So LeBron could kind of play third fiddle if he needed to.
21:01And he did and they were like on an absolute roll and then they get hurt.
21:05So now he has to be first fiddle again, which worked for a game.
21:09Will it work all the way through the playoffs?
21:10Yeah, I mean, it worked because he kept passing the ball to Luke Kennard and he never missed.
21:15Yep.
21:16It won't always be like that, but yeah.
