There is no need to introduce the death penalty into the Road Transport Act 1987 for offences involving driving under the influence, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Speaking to reporters on Monday (April 13), Loke said existing laws are sufficient to prosecute serious cases, with offenders still able to be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder where applicable.

He said the government is considering amendments to strengthen support for victims’ families, including mandatory compensation from offenders, adding that the proposed amendments are expected to be tabled in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session in June.

00:07YB, in the weeks of the viral cases and for driving under influences,
00:11will the Ministry of Transport consider to propose a death penalty charge?
00:16As far as government is concerned, we have already stopped mandatory death penalty.
00:22So this is not something we are looking at.
00:24So this is from the calls from the opposition itself, so you will not consider it?
00:29It doesn't mean the opposition call everything, we will do everything, right?
00:33So who, no, definitely it's not a death sentence.
00:36As currently, even without the death sentence on the Road Transport Act,
00:42AG Chambers can still charge somebody under 302.
00:46So this is already assisting provision, assisting law there.
00:52So what we are amending on the Road Transport Act is to ensure that
00:58they are compensation to the families, to the victim's family.
01:03If, let's say, they are found to be guilty, then the be faxed jail sentence and also penalty,
01:10they are also liable to pay compensation to the victim's family.
01:15So why we want to take up this proposal is that because currently the venue for the victim's family is
01:28to true civil action.
01:30So this will, of course, will be tedious.
01:32Sometimes it's, you know, took a very long time and they are caused to it.
01:37So instead of asking the victim's family to take up civil action,
01:42so probably we can look at the provisions to be added on to the current regulations, to the current law.
01:50So that besides jail sentence, they are liable to pay compensation to the victim's family.
01:55So this is something which we are looking at right now, but not death penalty.
02:06That means that you have lost all these charges of commission.
02:08So that even if there are charges that jail sentence were followed through that,
02:09that they couple of charges against Ainu Chahi Chahi and yet they are perpetually
