Existing penalties for offences involving driving while intoxicated should be reviewed to strengthen their deterrent effect and overall impact, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Speaking to reporters on Friday (April 3), she said current road traffic offence provisions are too lenient and fail to serve as a strong warning. Stricter laws may be needed to instil caution and deter risky behaviour.

00:00I just want to ask, do you want to talk about the public reaction of the club drivers that have
00:05been charged with you?
00:06I don't want to respond, let me talk about it.
00:09But I think in terms of the law, the law is quite small.
00:16It has a law for RTA, road traffic.
00:20I said before, in the case of bus, I said that there was a corporate manslaughter because it was a
00:27company that was handling bus.
00:28But in the case of individual, we have a lot of rights.
00:34But in the case of the hukuman, as a person who has been involved in the undang-undang,
00:40sometimes we can do the undang-undang to make a decision for the undang-undang to make a decision.
00:46If they see the undang-undang that's not, they can pay it.
00:50Maybe that's the message.
00:52Maybe the government can watch the akta that they have, they can go to Parliament and ask for the rights
00:58that is what they are.
01:00That is what's the right to the government.
01:02That's what's the right to the government.
01:03But in my opinion, maybe the government has to see the human rights that they have to do it as
01:08well.
01:10If not, it's maybe that if they can say that they can get $50,000,000, they can get discount
01:15to $20,000,000.
01:17Maybe it's true, but it's not true.
01:18But it's the government that is the right to the government.
01:20Emotiv?
01:21Emotiv lah, but I can't answer.
01:22But if I see, I have a law that is a good thing.
01:27But it's not me.
01:27I'm not the Minister of Pengangkutan.
01:29Okay, thank you.
