00:00All right, so the Department of Justice has the NFL in their bullseye.
00:04And, boy, I'll tell you what, here,
00:06you're talking about double-dipping on fans, cable bills,
00:09and now how they're packaging up and bundling up how you see games.
00:13Michael, when I wanted to watch NFL football on the holidays,
00:17I had to get Prime Video.
00:19I had to get Netflix.
00:20I had to get Amazon.
00:21I had to get Piedmont.
00:23You tell me on how this whole thing plays out here.
00:26Do you think the NFL's in trouble with the DOJ?
00:28I think this is a very serious problem for the NFL
00:31because, you know, there's a perception out there
00:34that they're chasing the last buck when it comes to media rights.
00:37And even though, you know, the majority of their games
00:39are still on free broadcast TV, you're right.
00:42There's a lot of frustration out there amongst people
00:44having to buy this streaming package and that streaming package to get games.
00:48And, look, the NFL has been the most brilliant league ever
00:53because they never went full cable and they never went pay-per-view, right?
00:57What happened to boxing?
00:58They went pay-per-view.
00:59They went closed circuit.
01:00They died as a sport.
01:01The NFL grew to be the most popular league in America
01:05because it was always available on free TV.
01:07And I think they should do everything they can to maintain that.
01:12You know, of course, the streamers are going to come
01:14and, you know, they're going to want more and more.
01:15But, you know, as you said, the government's pushing back.
01:19And, you know, people are starting to ask about this exemption
01:21that the NFL has had for decades.
01:23I think it's a serious problem they need to address.
01:26Absolutely.
01:27Because if I'm not mistaken, that DirecTV case ended up hitting them
01:31right between the eyes and they lost that case.
01:33So, this could play a factor here.
01:36Now, you know, you mentioned pay-per-view.
01:38So, you'd never see, like, in the future, you'll never see,
01:42you don't think, the World Cup, the Olympics,
01:46a Super Bowl, potentially, on pay-per-view.
01:49Because the way streaming is going, Michael, I mean,
01:51this is another avenue where you're seeing another revenue stream.
01:54In the NFL, always look where they are with the money.
01:57They chased the dollar bill and the cash register.
02:00Do you ever think you'll see that?
02:02I do think it's a possibility down the road
02:05that you could see a pay-per-view Super Bowl.
02:07You know, it depends on, you know, whether the government would okay it.
02:10But let's face it, if there was a pay-per-view Super Bowl,
02:13what could they charge for it?
02:14They could charge $150, maybe more.
02:17And you know what?
02:17I'd pay it.
02:18So would everybody else.
02:20But again, you know what I mean?
02:22That's very high risk, high reward.
02:25Imagine the potential backlash to that amongst fans
02:29who are used to, you know, having the Super Bowl for free,
02:31amongst government regulators.
02:33I mean, that could be, you know, one of the all-time money grabs.
02:37But boy, I'd hate to be the commissioner who made that decision
02:40because you're going to be in for a lot of trouble.
02:43Hey, finally here, YouTube's place in all of this with the NFL.
02:47We're going to think their place is.
02:48I see they're teaming up with Fox now.
02:51They're going to have like a five-game package coming up here,
02:54this coming 2026 season.
02:58Where is YouTube in this whole landscape
03:00when it comes to presenting NFL games?
03:03I think like Prime and I think like Netflix, they want more.
03:07You know, the streamers are very smart in that in the beginning,
03:10they were going after small sports.
03:12Now they go after the big ones.
03:13They go after the most valuable.
03:14They go after the NFL.
03:16They go after the Yankees.
03:17They go after, you know, home run.
03:20They go after, you know, these huge events and the biggest brands.
03:23So I think like a lot of all the streamers, they want more.
03:27But, you know, can they get it?
03:29You know, the broadcasters have woken up, Dan.
03:33I mean, it used to be that they would lend their talent
03:34to a YouTube or a Netflix to produce a game.
03:37Not anymore.
03:39You know, you go to Fox now and say,
03:40hey, you know, can we use Kevin Burkhart?
03:42And their answer is no.
03:43Can we use Tom Brady?
03:44No.
03:45You know, ESPN the same way.
03:47So, you know what I mean?
03:48There's been a real schism here
03:49where I think the broadcasters realize
03:52the NFL is the last thing holding up the Jenga block
03:55that's entertainment.
03:56And if they lose that, they're done for.
03:57So they're going to fight like hell.
