00:46In order to begin our meeting, we must first cast a circle. There are many ways to do this, but
00:52what I like to do for our videos is imagine a sphere around me, take a hit, and then imagine
00:57that sphere filling up with my smoke, cleansing and protecting me, and then we will invite the entities that we
01:03want to join us.
01:25In the spirit of cannabis, I invoke you. Hekate, goddess of witchcraft, I invoke you.

01:51For this week's meeting, we will be discussing Hekate, the Hellenic goddess of witchcraft.
01:57Since Hekate is one of the most popular Hellenic deities for witches, there is a lot of information about her,
02:05so I'll just be going over the basics today.
02:08We will likely revisit the topic of Hekate another time, but leave your questions and insights in the comments and
02:17I'll answer them the best way I can.
02:19With all that said, let's get into it.
02:22Hekate is the Hellenic goddess of magic, the moon, liminal spaces, necromancy, the unknown, and ghosts.
02:30Her name means work from afar. She is known as the triple goddess.
02:37Most people nowadays see her three forms as maiden, mother, and crone.
02:43However, many of us see those forms as guide, guardian, and gatekeeper.
02:50Her symbols include the triple moon symbol, red, torches, crossroads, keys, blue, dogs, especially black ones, weasels, the color black,
03:04lambs, especially black ones, bulls, fish, wreaths with herbs in them, goats, horses, garlic, snakes, elder trees, lions, belladonna, and
03:17wolves.
03:17Born to the titans, Persis, who is the titan god of destruction, and Asteria, who is the titan goddess of
03:26night, stars, and nocturnal prophecy.
03:31Hekate is a titan as well.
03:36She is a deity of the underworld, the mortal world, and Olympus.
03:41She guides shades to the underworld, and if you don't know, shades are the souls of the dead.
03:47She is also thought to aid in birth, so she is seen as very active in the lives of humans.
03:56During spring, when Persephone brings spring to the mortal world, Hekate supports Hades and performs Persephone's underworld duties.
04:05When Persephone is in the underworld, Hekate comforts Demeter in the mortal world.
04:13Some people believe that Persephone, Demeter, and Hekate were the same goddess, with Persephone being the maiden, Demeter being the
04:22mother, and Hekate being the crone.
04:24However, this is incorrect, and Hekate was actually portrayed as a young woman in ancient times.
04:32Hekate is also strongly connected to Artemis.
04:36In some traditions, the two goddesses have merged, but in most, they are two separate goddesses who happen to have
04:43a very strong connection.
04:45Artemis is often invoked to balance the intensity of Hekate's blessing and presence.
04:53Hekate's powers are vast.
04:55She can decide the outcome of battles.
04:58She can grant prosperity, wisdom, and power.
05:02She is honored above all other deities, even by Zeus, who we all know is selfish.
05:09She has many epithets for her various roles and symbols.
05:13She is called Anodia for being the guardian of crossroads.
05:19She is called Perseis for being the child of Persis, the titan god of destruction.
05:25She is called Nyctopolos, meaning night wandering.
05:30She is called Anasa Eneroi, meaning queen of those below.
05:36For being the key bearer, she is Klydokos.
05:40For being a savior, she is Soterra.
05:43There's also Epipargidia, meaning on the tower.
05:48Chorotrophos, meaning child nurse.
05:51And Trioditis, meaning triple formed.
05:53The night before the new moon was known in the ancient Hellenic world as Hekate's Depnon.
06:01It is a time for purifying the home and household and seeking blessings or wisdom from Hekate.
06:08There would be offerings for both Hekate and the restless dead.
06:12The rituals of Hekate's Depnon would both end and begin each month.
06:20Another celebration of Hekate is the Hekatea, which is a Thessalian festival that's held on November 19th.
