00:00Talk about teeing off in your bank account.
00:01That's what you want to do here.
00:03The Pittsburgh Pirates laying the lumber into Mr. Griffin here.
00:08What a contract he got nine years, $140 million.
00:11Whoa, let's get to the press conference.
00:15Oh, class.
00:16Yeah, thank you for all being here today to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
00:22Bob, and thank y'all for believing in the deed.
00:25Y'all took a chance only two years ago,
00:27and I felt nothing but support through this whole process.
00:33I'm super excited to be here for nine years.
00:37This is where we're going to call home.
00:40Me and my beautiful wife.
00:42Thank y'all for being here for me and my own dad, Caden, Serene.
00:47Thank y'all for always being my big supporters.
00:50I got questions.
00:52This is an unbelievable day for me.
00:54I'm pumped to be a pirate.
00:57Be a part of this wonderful clubhouse.
00:59A lot of great talent back there and coaches and staff.
01:02Thank y'all for being here to support me.
01:05Y'all made this transition to the big league super easy.
01:10I'm pumped to go compete.
01:12Good goals to win.
01:13Good goals to win a World Series.
01:16I think we got a great clubhouse.
01:18I'm going to be a part of it.
01:20Can't wait to continue to get better as a player and just continue to grow as a person as well
01:27in this clubhouse.
01:29You know, they're not here today, but just give a big shout out to Joey Devine and Casey Close from
01:36my agency for working super hard on this.
01:40So, yeah, I'm super excited.
01:42Thank you again for this opportunity and couldn't be more proud to be at Pittsburgh, Connor.
01:47Well, a little enough for questions.
01:49Just raise your name.
01:49I'll call on you.
01:50I need some help here quickly on this, Joe.
01:53Number one, when you show that and the guy's like, I just signed for nine years, 140.
01:56And you look at the picture.
01:57I think, yeah, the guy's probably 29 years old, which is what he looks like.
01:59He's 19.
02:01And he thanked his wife.
02:04Mike, yeah, I got it a lot.
02:06I got questions.
02:07I got questions.
02:08Who allowed that mustache?
02:10Number one.
02:10What is it?
02:11Kent Ticolvi?
02:12Like, stop it with that.
02:13That's not even remotely.
02:15Like, shave that.
02:17And first of all, he's only been up a week.
02:19So the big question to me is, A, how are you married at 19 already?
02:23That's a whole different discussion there, Donnie.
02:25But B, are you leaving?
02:27If you're this kid, you're a shortstop.
02:30You're a power-hitting shortstop.
02:32By signing this deal, you've basically eliminated the ability for arbitration down the road for you.
02:38How much money does this kid leave out on the table by agreeing to this deal right now, Donnie?
02:43Because a power-hitting shortstop in Major League Baseball is worth double that in the next five to seven years.
02:52Who are we kidding?
02:54It's interesting, too, because you give him the comfort of a life no matter what happens now.
02:58He could come up and hit 176 the next three years, and they tell him to go home.
03:02That's all his money guaranteed.
03:04But you're right about one thing.
03:05The interesting part, though, Joe, is actually the CBA that's coming into place.
03:08If we're just under normal baseball rule, you would get a guy like Scott Borson.
03:12He's like, no, no, no, no, no, kid.
03:13You believe in yourself?
03:14Yeah, good.
03:14Well, in five years, your arbitration is going to be like $35 million a year, if not more.
03:19And then if they keep playing, it goes up to $50 million, $65 million.
03:21And then when you're a free agent, I'll get you a 10-year, $1 billion deal by the time that
03:26comes.
03:26But he's obviously like, you know what?
03:27I'm going to take this board.
03:28I'm just growing my family.
03:29I don't have any fault in that.
03:31But usually, you see, Joe, they buy out the arbitration.
03:33He's like, hey, we're going to give this young kid a five- or six-year deal.
03:36This is a nine-year deal, which takes them way out.
03:39Which, again, you're saying to yourself, I have comfort.
03:42I'm never going to have to work again.
03:43It's a lot of money.
03:44But a lot of these guys understand, like, I'm the best at this position right now.
03:48I'm buying into myself.
03:49I'll make my money down the line, which now you say to yourself, instead of making $1 billion in your
03:55career,
03:55if you're really good with who never knows where the pay is going in five to six years,
03:58or you're making $600 million in your career, which, again, we're fighting over crazy numbers.
04:04But if he just played this out, which he thinks he's as good as he's going to be, yeah, he
04:07left money on the table.
04:10Again, not some sort of, well, he's a good glove.
04:13I mean, this is a power-hitting shortstop here who is going to be worth twice this in another five
04:20years along the line.
04:22But like you said, we've already seen this, right?
04:24We saw Acuna Jr.
04:25The Braves kind of did this.
04:27We're doing it before anybody.
04:29Strider, Harris, Austin Riley.
04:32Remember, they locked all of those guys up because they knew down the road it was going to cost them
04:37a fortune.
04:39So they locked them up sooner rather than later.
04:41And it looks like that's the direction Pittsburgh is going.
04:45But this kid, I think, might have left a little bit of money out on the table down the road
04:49here.
04:49But in another, we're going to work together.
04:50Look at Facebook, let's get the right back.
