00:10I have a few rules in life, and one of them is never trade anything with Bill Belichick.
00:15If Bill Belichick is selling you a bill of goods, that means that bill of goods is probably
00:22not going to help your team.
00:24You do not want to call up Bill Belichick when he's trying to get rid of a player.
00:28Usually, he knows why he's getting rid of a player.
00:33The Deion Branch trade in season from the Patriots to the Seahawks after Deion Branch won the Super
00:40Bowl MVP in 2005, it seemed odd.
00:45This was a disastrous trade for the Seahawks.
00:50Branch was traded to Seattle for their first round pick in 2007.
00:54Deion Branch was a good receiver.
00:56He was not worth a first round pick.
00:58I mean, they gave up a great pick, and he had about one halfway decent year in five seasons
01:04there.
01:05That's going to throw.
01:07That's time.
01:08Throws to the end zone.
01:09The catch is made.
01:09Touchdown, Seahawks!
01:11All right, baby!
01:12We're just getting fired!
01:16Do you know why that was a huge in-season trade?
01:18It had nothing to do with what the Seahawks got.
01:20It has everything to do with what the Patriots did not get.
01:23You look at that 2006 team, if they kept Deion Branch, if they found a way to keep him on
01:28that roster, I think there's a real good chance that 2006 team is able to finish that job.
01:32They're able to beat the Colts.
01:33They're able to go on to the Super Bowl and beat the Bears, and you get into the Super Bowl
01:37for Tom Brady.
01:38If Deion Branch were catching passes for the Patriots all year instead of, you know,
01:42Rache Caldwell and Doug Gabriel...
01:52If Bill Belichick could get a mulligan for a trade over the course of his career, maybe
01:56that's the one.
01:59Deion Branch was a Super Bowl MVP, and he was good.
02:02So in your mind, you weigh...
02:04Was he a product of the Patriots' system?
02:07Initially, I thought he was just a product of the system.
02:09It turns out he was much, much more.
02:11And if you go back and you talk to Tom Brady, he'll talk about how in sync he was with
02:16Deion
02:16Branch.
02:18Deion Branch has it.
02:19At the pin.
02:20At the five.
02:21In the end zone.
02:22That's the end zone.
02:24This kid is a real find.
02:26Brady, very early on, took to Deion.
02:29And he developed a really good chemistry in the early going.
02:33I think, if not for the injury, he would have had a much better success than Seattle.
02:38He was a terrific player.
02:39Not quite great, but a terrific player.
02:41He just got injured.
02:42He hurt his knee and was never the same player after that.
02:45So I think he probably gets unfairly maligned a little bit.
02:48And then the Patriots ended up getting him back for free.
02:51The number nine in season trade.
02:53Trent Richardson to the Colts.
02:56When Trent Richardson was traded,
02:59everyone said the Browns were making a huge mistake.
03:04Oh, baby, and we got somebody special.
03:08How can they trade their centerpiece away after just a season and a game?
03:13And to do it two games into the season,
03:16Brown fans have the right to kind of go,
03:18Oh, gosh, not again.
03:19Here we go.
03:20I thought the Colts got like they just stole something from these poor Cleveland Browns.
03:29There were no doubts about Trent Richardson going into that draft.
03:31Everybody to a man said he's the next Adrian Peterson.
03:35Mike Mayock saying it.
03:36Greg Cosell saying it.
03:38I had him ranked as arguably the best player in the draft.
03:42Did I say that out loud?
03:44No, for me, I feel like I got a lot to prove in this league.
03:48And following the footsteps of my father name, you know,
03:50with the great Jim Brown with his shoes, it's big.
03:53The leader in touchdowns by a rookie-round running back.
03:57Jim Brown was a seer.
04:00That was good.
04:01I'm trying to get out there.
04:03We're trying to get out of time.
04:04He thought Trent Richardson was an average running back.
04:12You put roll out the championships, right?
04:20This should be easy.
04:21One day I'm at Pregerson, one of the Browns,
04:23and the next day I'm here.
04:24I've been on the team for three days.
04:26It just didn't work.
04:29They lose the first-round pick that they could have used,
04:32and for two years, Trent Richardson gave them very little.
04:35All day, man.
04:37That's easy.
04:38It's like those horror movies where the lights come on
04:41and Dracula just, you know, falls apart.
04:43Like, he was no more.
04:45He turned to dust.
04:46Are you serious, my brother?
04:50Trust your instinct.
04:51Trust your instinct.
04:53Okay?
04:53He looked nothing like he did at Alabama.
04:56He looked slow.
04:57He looked stiff.
04:59Shouldn't be doing all this.
05:00He knows.
05:01He's not going to be wrong.
05:02I'll be shaking at all.
05:03I'm sure you're going to have a montage of him missing,
05:06wide-open rushing lanes
05:08as he runs right up his centering guard's abs for no gain.
05:16This guy is terrible.
05:19I remember the playoff game that year.
05:21Trent Richardson got one touch and fumbled the ball.
05:25That kind of sums up Trent Richardson's career in Indianapolis.
05:29Nothing went right for that guy at all.
05:30You're good.
05:31Come on.
05:32You're always good.
05:33That's all.
05:35I'm shocked that the Browns actually pulled this off
05:38and that they didn't trade for him.
05:41It's great that they got a first-round pick for Trent Richardson.
05:45They used it on Johnny Manziel.
05:46You look at what Cleveland did with the pick that they got.
05:50Cleveland Browns select Johnny Manziel, quarterback, Texas A&M.
05:56This is the ultimate lose-lose trade in NFL history.
06:01Classic rounds.
06:03They don't actually...
06:05They get the first-round pick,
06:06and then they waste it on Johnny Manziel.
06:09The major lesson there is any time the...
06:12Carson Palmer to the Raiders.
06:19Carson signed a contract.
06:21He made a commitment.
06:24And throwing a long left side.
06:26He's got T.O.
06:26He's got it!
06:29He gave his word.
06:31We relied on his word.
06:33A painful, painful loss for the Cincinnati Bengals.
06:36We relied on his commitment.
06:41He quit.
06:41He quit on the Bengals.
06:43He quit?
06:44Gosh, when you say,
06:45hey, I'm going to retire or trade me,
06:47you can't really bring a guy back after his day, can you?
06:49I smelled the top of my hand two days ago.
06:52I ate a lot.
06:53And I thought I stuck it in the toilet.
06:55He needed it out of there.
06:56It was kind of toxic for all parties.
06:58I'm from Cincinnati.
06:59I totally understood where Carson Palmer was coming from.
07:03I'm going to go sit on my couch.
07:04I don't need to play for the Bengals.
07:05There are frustrating organizations.
07:07I totally understood where he's coming from.
07:11Usually the NFL trade deadline kind of comes and goes a couple minutes here and there.
07:16But wow, what a blockbuster on this text.
07:18Palmer held out the first six weeks of the 2011 season
07:21before the Bengals shipped him to Oakland for a first and a second.
07:25Al Davis had just passed away.
07:29Losing that man hurt me more than you'd know.
07:32Hugh Jackson was basically running the entire team.
07:37Jason Campbell goes down.
07:39He thinks they're a wild card team or possibly win the AFC West.
07:42So he swings for the fences, sends two draft picks for Carson Palmer.
07:46Carson Palmer did not want to play in Cincinnati.
07:49And he gets his wish.
07:50He's going to play in Oakland.
07:52I made better trades in my middle school lunchroom.
07:55Like, they gave up a lot for this guy.
07:56News right slot, top of the right.
08:00News left slot, top of the left.
08:02Hugh Jackson made a bold move and told everybody,
08:05I think it's the greatest trade in NFL history.
08:10What?
08:12I say it was the greatest trade in football,
08:14but I wasn't saying it because of the trade.
08:16I was saying it because I wanted to give our team hope.
08:20Short drive.
08:21Pass left side.
08:22Picked off.
08:23And the three of them flared.
08:25Palmer won just eight of his 24 starts in silver and black.
08:28Less than two years later, both he and Hugh Jackson were elsewhere.
08:34People forget that he had an elbow injury for two or three years
08:37where he eschewed Tommy John surgery, probably should have had it,
08:41was not the same thrower then that he is now.
08:44Left, he got hit, now see, he bumbles the ball.
08:47That's a killer.
08:49The problem with the trade wasn't Carson,
08:51it was the rest of the Raiders.
08:53Palmer throws the right, down the ground.
08:54Nice.
08:56I think Hugh Jackson, to some degree, was right.
08:58It was a really good trade, and Carson Palmer, as has been proven,
09:02had a ton of gas left in his tank.
09:04Here they come.
09:05Palmer throwing deep, far side jump ball.
09:07Off, it's caught.
09:08And you look at what Carson Palmer has done since,
09:12maybe Hugh Jackson wasn't so crazy.
09:14That's what we're really all about, man.
09:16That's what Raiders do.
09:17It's not the greatest trade, but I think it was a pretty good trade.
09:21Number seven in season trade.
09:23Bobby Lane to Pittsburgh.
09:26Poor Detroit fans.
09:27You know, you can always come up.
09:29You know, it's not high enough.
09:31This affected franchises, the past of both franchises since that day.
09:39You know, it's not high enough.
09:42You can always come up with where it all went wrong.
09:46And for Detroit fans, the trade of Bobby Lane is where it all started to go wrong.
09:52The legend of this in-season trade for Bobby Lane has just always fascinated me.
09:59I mean, there are people in Detroit that to this day still think that it's almost like a curse of
10:03the Bambino thing.
10:04Bobby Lane saying you will not win another playoff game for 50 years is the NFL's equivalent of Babe Ruth
10:12calling his shot.
10:13He put a pox on the Lions fans.
10:20Lions fans that are under the age of 50 don't believe this ever happened.
10:27Bobby Lane and the Lions won three championships in eight years.
10:32So for the second year in a row, the professional football world championship goes to the Detroit Lions.
10:38And then they trade them away, and there you go.
10:41It's the Bobby Lane curse.
10:42Bobby Lane was so ticked off that the Lions had the audacity to trade him to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
10:51As legend has it, on the way out, he says this franchise will never win a championship in 50 years.
10:58In that 50 years, the Lions won one playoff game, lost 10.
11:03The last year of the curse, 2008, the Lions go out in 16.
11:07He ran out of bounds. He ran out of the end zone.
11:09They are the worst team in league history.
11:16Detroit received her a moral and two draft choices, but not everyone cursed the trade of Bobby Lane.
11:23I like this trade because at the time, Bobby Lane leads the Lions to their greatest era in franchise history.
11:30They were the team of the mid-1950s.
11:32Bobby Lane is the playboy quarterback.
11:33He's taking his linemen out drinking every night.
11:36He's on top of the NFL world.
11:38He goes to Pittsburgh.
11:39At Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, former Lions favorite Bobby Lane led the Steelers.
11:43And the impact there, if Pittsburgh says, no, we're good, we're straight.
11:47We got Bobby Lane.
11:48We're going to cut Johnny Unitas.
11:49We're going to cut Len Dawson.
11:51Two Hall of Fame quarterbacks because the Steelers are set at quarterback with Bobby Lane.
11:57Bobby Lane had a type of leadership that was partly on the field.
12:00And it was partly in the locker room.
12:03And it was partly on the streets at 11 o'clock at night.
12:07One time we passed him a halftime coming out for the second half in Baltimore.
12:11I said, Bobby, how are you doing?
12:12He breathed on me.
12:13I said, Jesus, is that from last night?
12:15He said, I had a couple at halftime.
12:19Bobby Lane, yeah, he might have drank a lot and caroused and had late nights and bickered
12:25with coaches.
12:26But man, when you're winning three titles in eight years, little do you know, you've got
12:32Matt Millen coming.
12:33Keep Bobby Lane as long as possible.
12:36You go through history and you see these names like Greg Landry and Gary Danielson and Eric
12:40Hipple and Rodney Peet.
12:42And we can go on and on and on.
12:43This is a...
12:45Uh, I think Jeff Kamlo.
12:51...that has not recovered from a trade.
12:54The number six in-season trade.
12:56Roy Williams to Dallas.
12:58The Roy Williams trade is gonna be on Jerry Jones' tombstone.
13:03You heard it here first.
13:05I loved him coming out of Texas.
13:06I thought he was gonna be a great, great player.
13:09He was long.
13:10He was tall.
13:11He was athletic.
13:12He could run.
13:13How about that?
13:15I thought Roy Williams was gonna be a superstar.
13:17What a play by Roy Williams!
13:21Roy Williams caught 28 touchdowns in his first four seasons in Detroit.
13:25But in 2008, on their way to an 0-16 season, the Lions shipped him off to Dallas.
13:39A major deal at the trade deadline.
13:42The Cowboys acquiring Lions receiver Roy Williams and the seventh-round draft pick in exchange
13:47for Dallas' first, third, and sixth-round picks.
13:50It was like bringing home the hero of the state of Texas, and it just seemed like a match made
13:55in heaven.
13:56Dallas likes stars.
13:58Jerry Jones likes stars, right?
14:00Well, we're excited because it gets Roy Williams back to Texas, but it gets him on the other side of
14:05Terrell Owens.
14:05This is the ultimate Jerry Jones in Dallas trade.
14:10Start it now.
14:11Get out of here!
14:13I don't know what I'm talking about.
14:14You really are asking me what Jerry Jones was thinking?
14:19Ha!
14:20Roy Williams said, I'm more happy to be a Dallas Cowboy than I am when I got my first bike.
14:27It's going to be a costly deal for the Dallas Cowboys and the picks that they pay Detroit and the
14:32money they pay to Roy Williams.
14:33But the bottom line, Roy Williams will be tied to the Dallas Cowboys as they move into their new stadium
14:39for the next five years.
14:40You can buy 10,000 bikes with the contract that Roy Williams got.
14:47I wish we could trade for a day.
14:48I don't even remember being that happy when I got my first bike.
14:52It raises your eyebrows when a franchise gives up their best player, their best receiver.
14:58There's a problem there.
14:59I smell pink, and there's no need to panic at this time.
15:04Kind of like for the Cowboys and Charles Haley did for the Cowboys.
15:07They thought Roy Williams was going to do that for the Cowboys in his era and lead them to a
15:11Super Bowl and put them over the top.
15:13It's not that you leave Detroit and things get worse.
15:17I ain't got nothing.
15:18Trading for Roy Williams, giving up all of that, and paying him that money was the biggest mistake Jerry Jones
15:25has ever made.
15:26Was it the biggest mistake?
15:28It's the playoffs, neighbor.
15:31You made the best team win.
15:36In 10 games following our number six trade, Roy Williams averaged under 20 yards receiving a game.
15:44In two and a half years in Dallas, he topped 100 yards receiving just twice.
15:50Please come back at a later time.
15:53I'll be with you in just a moment.
15:55In the end, he got Wally pipped because Miles Austin comes in when he's hurt and has his career game
16:01against the Kansas City Chiefs.
16:03Austin foot race!
16:04Austin score!
16:06And Roy Williams never gets his job back, and that's kind of the end of the Roy Williams era in
16:11Dallas, as short-lived as it was.
16:13What's your favorite cartoon movie?
16:15Cartoon movie?
16:17No, just cartoon.
16:19Like Tommy, Jerry, DuckTales.
16:23You don't remember DuckTales.
16:24The number five in-season trade, John Hadle to the Packers.
16:30John Hadle was an AFL quarterback who put up very good numbers for that era.
16:37Wiston Gilman, they aired it out.
16:40John Hadle is the guy you always see on Lance Allworth's highlight reels.
16:44Throw him a deep ball.
16:46He wore 21, which was such a cool quarterback number.
16:49All right, here we go.
16:51He went to the Rams in the early 70s, and in 1973, had a very good season.
16:56The Rams won the NFC West.
16:59Hadle was a big reason why.
17:02By the time we get to the mid-70s, he's no good anymore.
17:06We just stuck this joint out so badly, it's unbelievable.
17:20The Packers ran out a quarterback list that included names like Scott Hunter, Jerry Taggy, Jim Delgazzo, and Jack Concannon.
17:31Head coach Dan Devine was desperate to acquire a legit quarterback.
17:35This was Dan Devine at the end of his rope going, I'm going to get fired here.
17:40I'm going to get canned.
17:41I'm going to get the zig any moment.
17:43So what do I do?
17:44I don't have a quarterback.
17:45Can I get a quarterback?
17:46Where can I get a quarterback?
17:47Ah, yes, there's John Hadle.
17:49He was good 12 years ago.
17:52Who would ever give up like a million picks for a 34-year-old quarterback?
17:58Normally, you don't pay for 35-year-old quarterback.
18:02Well, now, that doesn't, that hasn't sounded too bad since like, I don't know, 2005.
18:11But, 34 in 1974 was not 34 now.
18:19John Hadle's hairline went away from him when he was about 29.
18:36Draft picks, it's just a little bit overpriced, you know?
18:40If you go to the supermarket and, you know, can of soup costs $3.99, you're probably not
18:45paying $120 for it.
18:46And for the man most responsible, for Dan Devine, it was undeniably a crowning moment.
18:52Should Dan Devine have a statue next to Lombardi?
19:00That's a question that I have.
19:06What was common in that era was to trade draft picks because there were coaches who believed
19:11that draft picks were almost worthless.
19:13The teams that did this routinely wound up at the bottom of the standings.
19:18And very often, it was because they were bringing a 30-something quarterback to play a game that
19:23they were more suited for 10 years earlier.
19:26Hadle comes in, as you might imagine, he's a disaster.
19:30He lasts a season and a half in Green Bay, and then he's gone.
19:34Dan Devine ends up in Notre Dame.
19:37So this guy runs the Packers franchise into the ground.
19:42They're terrible for the next 10 years, and he gets his golden parachute to Notre Dame.
19:48The number four in season.
19:49Try the next 15 years.
19:52Trade Marshawn Lynch to Seattle.
19:57Marshawn Lynch in Buffalo is one of the most interesting...
20:03He just didn't want to be in Buffalo.
20:06Clearly he had plenty of good football left.
20:10Marshawn Lynch shaking the tackle.
20:11With a 45-league field.
20:13He's going.
20:13He's going to the house.
20:14Marshawn Lynch at the second.
20:16Just to take five.
20:18Touchdown, Marshawn Lynch.
20:19Why would you trade Marshawn Lynch?
20:21That was a trade that had to happen because they had Marshawn Lynch already.
20:25They had Fred Jackson, who was coming off a 1,000-yard season.
20:29Unbelievable run for Fred Jackson.
20:31And then they drafted C.J. Spiller.
20:33Touchdown!
20:34Touchdown!
20:35C.J. Spiller!
20:36The thriller!
20:39He was 24 years old.
20:42Had been to a Pro Bowl.
20:43Had a 1,000-yard season already.
20:45And you knew he was going to be great somewhere.
20:48Lynch cuts it up the middle and he walks it to the end zone.
20:51Touchdown!
20:52Buffalo!
20:53Marshawn marches on!
20:55Buffalo received a fourth and fifth round pick from Seattle.
20:58And Lynch packed his bags for the Emerald City.
21:01For whatever reason, there are times when a player and a city and a team just have this perfect intersection.
21:08You are spectacular!
21:10Goodness!
21:11Gracious!
21:11Be small!
21:12Marshawn Lynch became the heartbeat of Seattle.
21:16Don't you guys know you can't tackle beach mode like that?
21:20When you went into that locker room and you talked to every single player on any of those teams, they
21:24would say the same thing.
21:26Marshawn Lynch drives this bus.
21:28He is the beating heart of the team.
21:29He is the one who gave us the toughness we have.
21:32And we only go as far as he takes us.
21:34I'd like you to take this to the Super Bowl.
21:39It's one of the great trades in NFL history because the Seattle Seahawks built the championship team.
21:43basically around Marshawn Lynch and his identity on offense.
21:47They gave up a fourth and a fifth for a guy who was basically the centerpiece of their team for
21:53a number of years.
21:54Marshawn gets it!
21:55You're the great buddy!
21:57Are you kidding me?
21:58It's a rare thing for one player to change the culture of a franchise that much, and not specifically.
22:06especially if you're not a quarterback.
22:08It doesn't happen a lot.
22:12I'm going to be in the woods living out there just like me no more out, baby!
22:16Like me no more out!
22:17Trying to restore my community!
22:19Going to Seattle was the best thing Marshawn Lynch ever did.
22:22Because this is where his wonderful character that we know blossomed.
22:27It looks so good!
22:29It looks so good!
22:31It must have changed from his thighs off the thighs!
22:33And then he has that historic great rock.
22:36I just think Marshawn Lynch didn't want to be in Buffalo weather.
22:40He didn't want to be on the east side of the country.
22:43He wanted to be on the west side.
22:45He's from the west coast.
22:47He's from Oakland.
22:51He's from the west side.
22:52By the way they have a whole people's life moving.
22:54He's a top to 40.
22:55Midfield.
22:5645.
22:57He's on the run Lynch.
22:5840.
22:58He's a bad 45.
23:00He's down to 20.
23:0215.
23:03He's a go.
23:04He's gonna go.
23:06Touchdown Seahawks!
23:07Oh my word!
23:09Probably the most memorable playoff touchdown run in history.
23:12The Beastquake.
23:13If that had been the only thing that he did for the Seahawks.
23:16It would have already been a lopsided trade.
23:21That was an incredible trade by the Seahawks.
23:24The Bills not so much.
23:25It's a steal.
23:26I mean it's hitting a grand slam.
23:28Freaking sick of the best.
23:29It was one of those days where you look at it and when it happens you just kind of shrug
23:33your shoulders a little bit and think okay maybe.
23:38Do Bills fans or people associated with the Bills get down on CJ Spiller?
23:44Because what I know is barring injury he averaged five yards a carry for them and he could return
23:51kicks.
23:53He wasn't as bad as people try and say.
24:01The Raiders had to be having a party after that trade was consummated.
24:07Just win, David.
24:09Oh, by the way, you're gonna have Mike Haynes here and Lester Hayes over there.
24:12We'll just have two locked down corners.
24:14That was an iconic trade for them in their history.
24:20In 1983, Pro Bowl quarterback Mike Haynes was holding out.
24:25The Raiders pounced, but almost too late.
24:31So the Haynes trade was not submitted before the law, so it ended up in court.
24:36Huge surprise, Raiders, NFL, in court.
24:39Who would guess?
24:41You got the Raiders in the 80s.
24:45A lot of their big stories involve court.
24:50I'm from Los Angeles, and so for me it was an opportunity to go home and play in front of
24:55my family and friends, the city I grew up in.
25:00The Raiders won their day in court and added a future Hall of Famer.
25:05If you're looking for an ideal corner to play, other than me, of course, my size, would be Mike Haynes.
25:13Mike could have made all pro as a wide receiver, but he was just that good.
25:18He'd lower you to sleep and think you're getting away, but next thing you know, you turn, Mike is all
25:22over you.
25:25He was still in his prime, and he would have several more Pro Bowl seasons after this.
25:32First day I saw him in El Segundo, he walked in.
25:35I said, you know, Mike, if we can get this done, but you'd be in here playing for the Raiders.
25:40We will go to the Super Bowl.
25:41The 80s Raiders were prophets.
25:45Haynes' future quarterback partner predicted the trade eight months before it happened.
25:50Lester's first Pro Bowl, I guess it might be where we first met, and he said to me, you're going
25:56to be a Raider.
25:57I have talked to the stars, you know, and has foretold that you will wear the silver and black.
26:06And sure enough, later that year, I'm a Raider.
26:09And I said, Lester, do you remember?
26:11He goes, hey, you can't beat Destiny.
26:14It is Destiny that you're going to be here.
26:19You can't beat Destiny or Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes as a tandem.
26:26He was able to step right in and play at a high level immediately.
26:30The price was a first and a second round pick.
26:34The result was arguably the best cornerback tandem in NFL history.
26:39When the Raiders got Mike Haynes, they said, oh, my God, we got it all now.
26:43Put him on the other side of Lester.
26:45You could forget about anybody throwing on him.
26:47Stop back, sets up, delivers one to three.
26:49You get it, it's up to Hayes.
26:5018-9, 5, 15, 10, 5.
26:53Touchdown, Raiders!
26:54When Haynes hooked up with Lester Hayes, it formed, you know, a great tandem.
26:59For cornerbacks, and not many teams lacked going against the Raiders back in that era.
27:05When you put those guys on the edges, guys couldn't get off the line of scrimmage.
27:09That was a fun theater, fun theater out there watching those guys play.
27:16You guys were magnificent.
27:19You dominated.
27:20You deserve to be the champ.
27:22Their destiny was complete in January.
27:26Three months after the trade, the Raiders were champions.
27:30Think of the 83 Redskins as like the 98 Vikings.
27:32Or the 2007 Patriots with Brady, Welker, and Moss.
27:37And the Raiders compete.
27:38No, I mean, yes, I see what he's saying, but those 83 Redskins had legit tough defenses and a legit
27:50knack for taking away the ball.
27:54So, yeah, they were like those teams, but with better defenses.
28:10That trade cannot be underestimated.
28:13I don't know that the Raiders win that Super Bowl without Mike Haynes.
28:18Number two in season trade.
28:20Eric Dickerson to Indianapolis.
28:23I don't think when you guys are ranking the Dickerson trade, you're not looking at what happens afterwards.
28:28You're talking about the shock value of the moment when it's easy to forget now, but his first five years
28:35with the Rams,
28:36people were acting like he was going to challenge Jim Brown as the best running back of all time.
28:40He sets the single season rushing mark.
28:42Everybody thinks that Dickerson is going to be the greatest in history.
28:44And to see him get traded, he becomes available.
28:47I think that's what shocked everyone.
28:48Eric Dickerson was a different kind of bat than the NFL had seen.
28:52The entire team, not just the offense, revolved around Eric Dickerson every single week.
28:58Six five to Dickerson, third and left.
29:00That's inside.
29:01Out to the 30.
29:0235 to the 40.
29:04To the 45.
29:04To the 50.
29:05Down to the 35.
29:07Down to the 25.
29:08Down to the 10.
29:09Five.
29:10Touchdown, Eric Dickerson.
29:14Eric Dickerson was all about the money.
29:17I've asked the Rams to pay me the same salary that other successful running backs are now being paid.
29:22Jeez.
29:24He deserved the money.
29:26Eric Dickerson's first six seasons, including 88 when he was already with the Colts, he had 9,900 yards.
29:36In one of those seasons with strikes shorting, he would have had 10,000 in six seasons.
29:44As soon as the Rams vice president, John Shaw, has agreed to extend my contract for three years, I would
29:49join the Rams in training camp.
29:51He was a phenomenal player, and he was a dedicated player, but he was all about the money.
29:55I mean, I'm still happy to be playing with the Rams, but I don't want to be a fool.
29:58I have to look out there.
30:00Dickerson was on his way to the Hall of Fame.
30:03Dickerson just wanted to be paid more money, and the Rams are just sick of hearing all of his gripes.
30:08And so the Colts needing to have a splash in Indianapolis.
30:12This is what Ron Meyer and that franchise felt they needed to make the splash to get the attention.
30:18Eric Dickerson told me that they tried to ship him to Siberia if they could.
30:21Well, they couldn't, so they found Indianapolis, which in NFL terms at the time was Siberia.
30:29Consisting of three teams and 10 players, it's still one of the biggest trades in NFL history.
30:35Well, he just put it down and do another gear. That's fun to watch.
30:38One of the greatest trades, blockbuster trades in NFL history.
30:41There were 10 components, Eric Dickerson, Cornelius Bennett, and a bunch of other players.
30:45The Indianapolis Colts needed to put themselves on the map.
30:49For you, that you're worth three number ones, three number twos, and two other running backs?
30:56Well, I don't know. That's a lot, isn't it?
30:59Let me just have to wait and see.
31:01They had to give fans in a basketball city, in a basketball state,
31:05some reason to believe that this football team was anything other than a fly-by-night operation run on a
31:09shoestring.
31:11Enter Eric Dickerson.
31:14Dickerson became the face of the franchise.
31:16And at first, it kind of looks brilliant for the Colts.
31:20Strong start for that man, number 29, Eric Dickerson.
31:24And things have certainly turned for the Colt franchise.
31:28Did we run the ball?
31:30Did we run the ball?
31:32Did we run the ball?
31:37Eric Dickerson gave them national credibility immediately.
31:40That trade is massive for this city because it put us on the NFL map.
31:47Great job, buddy.
31:48Great job.
31:48Come on.
31:49Have some fun around here.
31:51Eric Dickerson did what he was traded to do in Indianapolis.
31:56He ran for 1,000 yards the year they got him.
31:59He ran for over 1,600 yards the next year.
32:02And people need to remember the Monday night game, Halloween, 1988.
32:07Candle will give the Dickerson off on the side.
32:08Touch up the middle.
32:0930 left.
32:0930.
32:1025.
32:1130.
32:1150.
32:1210.
32:125.
32:1310.
32:1410.
32:1410.
32:1410.
32:1410.
32:1510.
32:1610.
32:1710.
32:1810.
32:1810.
32:2210.
32:2310.
32:2411.
32:3010.
32:3211.
32:3311.
32:33caliber players in two different cities
32:36the number one in season trade
32:39Herschel Walker to the Vikings
32:42it is mad bugging that we were able to make this deal
32:48one owner said it's a great train robbery
32:51yeah I don't even think there's a debate here that has to be the greatest trade
32:54the Herschel Walker trade has got to be number one
32:57it's a dynasty maker
32:58back to back baby
33:01Cowboys back to back now
33:03hey yeah
33:05woo
33:06easy choice for number one I don't think there's another contender
33:10I remember at the time I think a lot of people thought the Cowboys were crazy for doing this
33:13Herschel could be on his way to the Super Bowl
33:16while the Cowboys could be on their way to the toilet bowl
33:19it has to be the number one because still to this day
33:22nearly 30 years later
33:24people still always say
33:26the Herschel Walker trade
33:28well remember the Herschel Walker trade
33:29you don't want that to be the Herschel Walker trade
33:31the Herschel Walker trade is a cautionary tale
33:34it is a lesson to be learned
33:36it's a campfire story among general managers in all sports
33:40the Dallas Cowboys showed everybody after that the value of draft picks
33:43now everybody hoards their draft picks because nobody wants to have the reverse Herschel Walker trade
33:48I'm up there Cowboys
33:49yeah
33:50yeah
33:55he was terrible in Minnesota
33:57he was an awful player in Minnesota
33:59he was an awful fit
34:01his talents did not translate
34:04in any way shape or form
34:07to what the Vikings were doing
34:08it's not only awful from the Vikings standpoint
34:12because they traded away all these pieces that helped them get to an NFC championship game just two years before
34:17it's not only that
34:19it's that Herschel Walker in his first two plays as a Viking
34:22looked like he was the godsend that they had traded for
34:25a 52 yard kickoff return
34:28the first time he touches it in a Minnesota uniform
34:31it's called back but everyone's going oh my goodness
34:35and then his next play touches the ball
34:37here comes Herschel on second and five
34:39across the 30, 35, 40
34:41at midfield
34:42Herschel breaks away
34:43loses his shield
34:44and then from then on
34:45he was nothing
34:46poof
34:47he had two good plays
34:50this is an outstanding
34:52outstanding
34:54trade
34:55regarding the future of the Cowboys
34:57everyone loves Herschel Walker
34:59one of the great athletes of our life
35:01but to get
35:02what amounted to
35:03what 11 or 12 bodies
35:06and some of them
35:06number one picks
35:08in exchange for Walker
35:09Dallas will receive
35:10a number one draft pick
35:12plus six conditional draft choices
35:14over the next three years
35:15including two first round picks
35:17three second round picks
35:19and one third round pick
35:20just amazing amazing talent
35:22for that 92, 93, 95 world champion Dallas Cowboys
35:26the guys he got back
35:27he was able to flip them for conditional picks
35:30and it was Emmitt Smith
35:32it was Darren Woodson
35:33Dallas is the likes Emmitt Smith
35:35running back with the ball
35:37yeah the problem isn't only that the Vikings are bad because of it
35:42it's that it builds a dynasty on the other side of the ledger
35:45and there's never been a trade this clear this clean
35:47in terms of building up one franchise
35:50and sinking the other
35:51Jimmy Johnson is taking his team from the absolute worst
35:55to the absolute best in four years
35:59this trade equals three Super Bowls for the Cowboys
36:04you can't ever say that in NFL history outside of this
36:07are you having a good time now Jerry?
36:10I want to take
36:11we did it our way baby!
36:13we did it!
36:14we did it!
36:15we did it!
36:16we did it!
36:17that trade changed NFL history no doubt
36:19because the Dallas Cowboys are one of the great dynasties of all time
36:22and it just doesn't happen without that trade
36:23without all the draft picks they got
36:25we did it!
