01:00It's going to be a capacity crowd very close to 103, 104,000.
01:06The Redskins that took the field against the Miami Dolphins in January of 1983 were largely a team nobody wanted.
01:13They were 53 misfits, outcasts, and rejects.
01:17But together, they won.
01:19Let's go out to the field today and look at each other and say, we've done all we can.
01:22If we win, we win.
01:23If we win, we win.
01:23We're going to win.
01:25No one typified this team of wanderers more than quarterback Joe Theismann.
01:30While he always wore number seven, Theismann wanted to be number one so badly that he changed his name at
01:37Notre Dame.
01:37Theismann, Theismann.
01:39Roger Valdiserri, our public relations director, called me in his office.
01:43He asked me how I pronounced my last name.
01:44Told him it was Theismann.
01:45He told me it was Theismann.
01:47I told him it was Theismann.
01:48He told me it was Theismann.
01:49He said, Joe, there's a trophy out there called the Theismann Trophy.
01:52We think you have a shot at it.
01:53We're going to change your name from Theismann to Theismann to rhyme with Theismann.
01:58I said, fine.
02:00Contrary to popular myth, the newly christened Theismann never did win the Theismann Trophy.
02:06In 1971, he was drafted by Don Shula's Dolphins, but bolted for the riches of the Canadian Football League.
02:14We're getting out there.
02:15A reporter from Miami calls me.
02:18Bob Greasy had just gotten hurt.
02:20Earl Morrow was going to be the quarterback.
02:22They had to go get Earl Morrow because I didn't go.
02:25How do you feel now?
02:26Bob Greasy's hurt.
02:28You would have had an opportunity to be the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins.
02:32The Dolphins have won Super Bowl VII.
02:35Have completed the greatest season in NFL history.
02:38Through the three years I went to Canada, the Miami Dolphins went on to Super Bowls.
02:44And I thought, jeez.
02:47Man.
02:49You blew it.
02:50You know, you blew it.
02:54In 1974, Theismann joined the Redskins, but rarely saw the light of day.
03:00The quarterback grew so frustrated, he volunteered to return punts.
03:05Holy moly.
03:06He is a little devil, isn't he?
03:09In 1978, he became the starter.
03:12But after three seasons and no playoff berths, Theismann desperately hoped a new coach could
03:17rescue his aimless career.
03:19I would like to give the Redskins fans the type of team that I think that they would be proud
03:26of.
03:26In Joe Gibbs' mind, that team did not include Theismann, unpredictable running back John Riggins, or straight-ahead dinosaur Mark
03:35Mosley.
03:36The new coach wanted to replace Washington's old guard.
03:40I mean, everybody had somebody else's job.
03:43Tom Flick was drafted to take Joe Theismann's job.
03:46Joe Washington had John Riggins' job.
03:49The guys they went and got were the offensive linemen.
03:51And even those were stories.
03:53You know, Joe Jacoby came in, they thought he was a defensive lineman.
03:56They didn't want to play him an offensive line.
03:59I guess we were just a greatest collection of misfits and retreads in football.
04:05These Redskins were unwanted, but clung to their jobs.
04:09And in the opening weeks of the 1981 season, executed Gibbs' wide-open offense to perfection.
04:15Through the first five weeks of that season, we led the league in yards, completions, touchdowns.
04:23We're leading everybody.
04:24We have the best offense in football.
04:26Problem was, we're 0-5.
04:28The pressure now shifted to Washington's rookie head coach, winless in his first five games.
04:34Your successes in this league are marked in wins.
04:36We're going to have to win to be successful.
04:38And I would be kidding anybody if I said anything differently.
04:42Tight end Rick Walker, number 88, had seen this all before.
04:47In four seasons with the Bengals and Redskins, he had seen four head coaches fired.
04:53Me, having seen four coaches kick to the curb, I thought, this is going to be 0-5.
05:00The thing that was so impressive about Joe Gibbs is that he never changed his approach.
05:06Maybe, maybe, Doc Walker, maybe he was getting the coaches fired.
05:11No, I'm just kidding.
05:13And you come in, you see Joe's car with the do on it, and you go, hey, this guy hasn't
05:18left.
05:19If your coach is sleeping at the park, you don't want to be the guy that hangs out at a
05:24club all night
05:25and doesn't do what you're supposed to do.
05:2744!
05:31What quarterbacks are supposed to do is win.
05:34Drowning in trade rumors, the 33-year-old Theismann was determined to convince his coach
05:39they shared a future beyond 1981.
05:43I didn't like the way things were between Joe and I.
05:46Drove to his house, and I can almost still see his face.
05:51Like, what are you doing here?
05:54And I said, coach, we need to talk.
05:56Football is my life.
05:58I think somebody sold you a bill of goods.
06:01I think somebody's telling you that I don't love football.
06:03Yeah, I have restaurants.
06:05Yeah, I've done commercials.
06:06I do a lot.
06:08But I'll give up everything if you tell me to.
06:13And I'll just be your quarterback.
06:17Gibbs embraced Theismann and redesigned the offense around the players he had.
06:23We started to go to two tight end offense.
06:25We started to change and run the football a little bit more.
06:28We became more of a control-the-game style offense versus let's-try-and-outscore-the-world
06:34offense.
06:36The Redskins were reborn.
06:39They won eight of their last 11 games in 1981.
06:43Will it be long enough?
06:44Yeah.
06:44Will it go through?
06:45Yes!
06:46The football game is over!
06:48Washington had found a winning formula that would serve them well in 1982.
06:59Washington Redskins.
07:02And 0-4 preseason only made things worse.
07:08After every preseason game, Joe Gibbs would come in and be screaming because we're not good
07:14enough.
07:15We would go into the preseason games for like three runs.
07:19We'd go in with like maybe four passes.
07:22Where's all the stuff we were running when we were winning?
07:26I actually thought he wanted us to lose every preseason game.
07:30Because when you win, complacency sets in a little bit.
07:34Complacency was not a problem for the Redskins in their roster of retreads.
07:39In the first game of the 1982 regular season, it was one of their misfits, kicker Mark Mosley,
07:45who fired the decisive shots.
07:4826-yard attempt.
07:49Snap.
07:50Hold is good.
07:51Kick is up long enough.
07:52It's good.
07:53Mark Mosley's toe has sent it to overtime, and Mark Mosley's toe has won it in overtime.
07:59Mark Mosley, without question, was the most valuable part of our football team.
08:05Every time we needed a clutch kick, Mark would get it done.
08:1213 socks, specially made shoe.
08:16Shoe had to weigh 4,000 pounds.
08:18I don't know how he got it on.
08:19I swear his right leg is twice the size of his left.
08:23Go out there and kick it the best you can, and don't worry about it.
08:27He had the blue collar style.
08:29You know, straight on kicker, big thighs.
08:32But, you know, he still had that kicker personality.
08:35He still had the fluffed up hair and, you know, the cologne.
08:40Yeah, he was, I guess, a metro, whatever you call it, guy, who actually cares about his appearance
08:45way before the term was ever introduced.
08:48He had mirrors, he had hairspray, creams, and he took a lot of abuse.
08:53You know, Mosley was tied up, gagged, thrown in the mud.
08:58He was totally abused, and he was our MVP.
09:03To this day, I always say that he's a single reason that we're able to have flashed the
09:08hardware, because the guy kicked us out of a lot of jams.
09:13In Washington's second game, Mosley buried the Buccaneers with three field goals, but
09:18he could not kick the Redskins out of the gathering storm of a player strike.
09:22All NFL training facilities will be struck.
09:27We are prepared to withhold our services however long it takes.
09:39My initial reaction was, you know, why are we striking?
09:43I didn't play the game for the money.
09:45I played it because it was fun playing, and I was good at it, and the money was extra.
09:48I mean, that was a bonus.
09:50And I couldn't really understand why, you know, I mean, what else did you need?
09:58The players' union wanted more money.
10:00The owners wouldn't give it to them, and NFL stadiums fell silent.
10:06As the schedule toppled like dominoes, the rhetoric only intensified.
10:11They could take my car back, and they could take my apartment.
10:14I really don't care.
10:15I'm sitting out for what I want, and right now, this agreement is not what I want.
10:18We've lost half the season now with the cancellation of next week's games.
10:23We're very close to losing the 1980s.
10:25Work stoppage in NFL history finally came to an end.
10:30The strike is finally over.
10:32The players are back, the coaches are happy, and who knows about the fans?
10:37First hit of the game, first hit of the new season, kick some ass.
10:46The Redskins had hung together.
10:48Now, they hung the Giants out to dry.
10:51Put count on the far side to Charlie Brown.
10:53Beats his fans, spins away from him.
10:5415, 10, 5, going for the end zone.
10:58Touchdown!
10:58And off Riggins, sweeping left side.
11:01Then goes the Diesel for a touchdown.
11:03Washington Redskins.
11:04You weren't in shape, you will be.
11:06The strike had shortened the season to just nine games.
11:101982 would be a sprint, not a marathon.
11:13And the 3-and-0 Redskins were first off the blocks.
11:23The free agent, the number 68, Russ Grimm, was a high school quarterback still learning the intricacies of line play
11:30and the geography of the eastern United States.
11:34I got drafted.
11:35If he was a high school quarterback, how big were the linemen in his high school?
11:43The Redskins in the third round and actually thought I was going to Seattle, Washington.
11:49I followed the Redskins, knew who they were.
11:51But for some reason, it was just always stuck in my mind that it was the state of Washington.
11:57As a rookie in 1981, Grimm was relocated from center to left guard.
12:02He could handle the NFC East's finest.
12:05He was the only Redskin who could block one of the most feared players in football,
12:09the Cowboys' nine-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, Randy White.
12:14In his second season, Grimm was the inspiration for the legend that grew around Washington's offensive line.
12:21They needed some kind of a nickname.
12:22Just looking at Russ Grimm and Jeff Bostic, short little chubby fellow,
12:26and I said, come on, you hogs, let's get down here.
12:28And it kind of got a kick out of him.
12:29It kind of spread throughout the team.
12:31When he first said it, it's, I mean, it was just a statement.
12:36I mean, I didn't think anything about it.
12:38It was just a simple remark made during the course of a practice.
12:42It ended up that it looked made into the paper.
12:45No one would really think it's anything glamorous.
12:48People want to be associated with hogs.
12:50Run it out! Run it out! Run it out! Run it out, hogs!
12:53But when things come out that blue-collar guy can attach to himself with,
12:58it goes off the chain.
13:00And this is exactly what happened with the hogs.
13:02I love them hogs! I love them hogs!
13:06I love them hogs! Yeah, I love them hogs!
13:09The marketing capabilities of George Stark, who was the right tackle,
13:13sort of thought, you know what?
13:15In this era of merchandising and marketing, why not make t-shirts?
13:20George Stark, you know, formulated Super Hogs Incorporated,
13:23three full-time employees, shirts, hats, a whole product line, and engagements.
13:27Why don't you turn around and scoot around and get back here?
13:29We do what other companies do.
13:32They're just companies that are independent outside of football.
13:34I just thought that it was inappropriate that the hog individuals be exploited by those who don't play.
13:42The company comes in.
13:44We want to pay you $2,000, $3,000.
13:46Back then, to put a tux on and stand next to a big pig in a farmyard.
13:51It was like, are you serious?
13:53The name got so big that restaurants would call us and say,
13:59we would love for you guys to come over for dinner on Thursday night at 7 o'clock,
14:03and we'll pick up the tab.
14:05The hogs were an exclusive group.
14:08Most redskins failed to cut enough bacon.
14:11To become a member of the hogs was a special thing.
14:15Hey, guys, can I get...
14:16No, get out of here.
14:18They don't even do it in a nice way.
14:19They just tell you no.
14:21You can't be a hog.
14:23Hog or no hog, Washington had plenty of hams,
14:27and nicknames exploded
14:30across the Redskins roster.
14:33Every unit sort of developed their own personalities,
14:37and they decided they'd have to have their own monikers.
14:42The linebackers began calling themselves the Bald Eagles,
14:46and the secondary adopted an equally patriotic nickname.
14:50The bombardment has been so intense it seemed not even this could help.
14:54So the Redskins dubbed their deep backs the Pearl Harbor Crew.
14:57The Pearl Harbor Crew was actually people making fun of people bombing us.
15:02Instead of turning it as a negative, it turned it into a positive,
15:04and we had a lot of fun with it.
15:07You had Rigo, the diesel,
15:09because he ran like a giant diesel truck going through everything.
15:13Drag up that diesel.
15:18You know, I watched the Smurfs.
15:20They were little purple guys.
15:22Here we had these little...
15:26What is his name?
15:27Alvin something in downtown Charlie Brown.
15:33What a better name for him.
15:34Hey Smurf!
15:35Virgil!
15:36You know, it's amazing.
15:37Virgil's the smallest guy in the bar club.
15:38He's the only guy sitting down watching the game.
15:40On the ground.
15:42Smurf one and Smurf two back into the game.
15:44What's that mean?
15:46Smurf.
15:46A little blue.
15:47They went with this band of gypsies.
15:51Coach Gibbs must have said to his office and go,
15:54what in the heck is going on with these people I have?
15:57But he let it breathe.
15:59Joe Gibbs allowed the Redskins to be themselves.
16:02Even a Sunday carpool could become a train wreck.
16:06Dave Butts, Mark Mosley and I,
16:08we used to drive to games together.
16:10And this was a circus unto itself.
16:13Dave had this superstition.
16:15If he could run over certain types of roadkill,
16:19going down the G.W. Parkway,
16:21it would determine how he was going to play.
16:24All of a sudden,
16:26and Dave would go,
16:27yeah, Groundhog,
16:29gonna have a heck of a day.
16:30That's all you need to know about the Washington Redskins.
16:34We're a bunch of characters with character.
16:40In Washington's fourth game of the 82 season,
16:43all those characters overwhelmed the Eagles.
16:46The big hero was the Smurf with the Peanuts name,
16:49a good man named Charlie Brown.
16:52The Redskins let's go deep.
16:54He's got Charlie Brown down there,
16:56well covered.
16:57He makes a crash at the five,
16:59and dives to the two.
17:01Whoa, what a play.
17:04Charlie Brown wide open,
17:06touchdown, watching the Redskins.
17:07These oddballs could play ball.
17:11At 4-0,
17:12the Redskins were the NFL's only perfect team.
17:18Redskins were now on America's radar,
17:20but if they were ever going to be number one,
17:23they would have to beat America's team.
17:26George Allen taught me to hate the Dallas Cowboys.
17:29He taught me to hate the star.
17:31He taught me to hate their shiny uniforms.
17:34The Roger Staubachs,
17:36the Danny Whites,
17:37the Tony Dorsets,
17:38the we're better than everybody attitude.
17:42The problem with all that was,
17:44they were right.
17:45They were that good.
17:50And they came in in 82,
17:51and they kicked our tails.
17:54Joe Theismann was sacked seven times.
17:58It was a humiliation for the Hogs.
18:01Our pass protection broke down.
18:03And give him the credit,
18:04they broke it down.
18:05They were just better.
18:08Blitz showing.
18:09Theismann straight drop.
18:10He's going to get hit on the blitz.
18:11And sacked.
18:13Kind of busts you both.
18:15The next week in St. Louis,
18:17the offense failed to score a touchdown.
18:19Only four Mark Mosley field goals
18:21saved the Redskins from an upset.
18:25Thysman's set.
18:25Snap.
18:26Hold.
18:26Kick is up.
18:27Long it up.
18:28Is it good?
18:29It is good.
18:30Mosley had made 18 straight.
18:33He would become the only kicker in NFL history
18:36to be named the league's MVP.
18:38But Washington's best player
18:40was its most outlandish.
18:43In 11 seasons as a pro,
18:46John Riggins had wandered through hairstyles
18:48and watering holes
18:49in a one-man carnival of the absurd.
18:52Being around John Riggins
18:54is like going to a soap opera
18:57or a circus every day.
18:59I believe that Coach Gibbs
19:00was scared to death
19:01to be alone in a room with John Riggins.
19:05Riggle was a...
19:06He went to a different beat.
19:08I don't think I've ever played
19:09with a tougher guy than John Riggins.
19:12I've seen him score
19:15umpteen touchdowns
19:16and never spike the football.
19:18I've seen him take some late shots,
19:20never get up and say anything
19:21to whoever hit him.
19:23If you didn't get your defender
19:25out of the way where he's coming,
19:26he'll run you over,
19:28he'll run the defender over.
19:30He's taking it to him, isn't he?
19:32You know, J.R. was an honorary hog,
19:34but J.R. could have been
19:35in the over-the-hill gang,
19:36he could have been with
19:37the Pearl Harbor crew,
19:38he could have done anything
19:39he wanted to be
19:39because he would have been
19:40accepted by all associations.
19:46Riggins served as president
19:47of Washington's
19:48most prestigious fraternity,
19:50the Five O'Clock Club.
19:52The Five O'Clock Club
19:54used to get together
19:55in a little shed
19:56that was located
19:57right off of one
19:58of our practice facilities.
20:00It was a shed
20:01that couldn't be
20:02four feet square,
20:03and it's where they used
20:04to stick all the dummies.
20:06And the guys decided
20:07after practice
20:08it would be a great place
20:09to sort of hang out
20:12some guys hung out
20:13much, much longer
20:14than others.
20:15Some guys might have
20:16slept there
20:17on a couple of occasions.
20:18There was some Gatorade there,
20:20and there was
20:22Miller Lite,
20:23Budweiser,
20:24and believe me,
20:25there was no champagne
20:26in the Five O'Clock Club.
20:28I'm sort of like
20:29the leader of the football team.
20:30You know,
20:31I now have become
20:31the quarterback.
20:32I wanted to be a part of it.
20:34He applied for membership
20:36to the Five O'Clock Club,
20:37which was denied.
20:39He was not getting
20:40in the Five O'Clock Club
20:41or the Hawks.
20:44Theismann had no trouble
20:46getting on television.
20:48Self-assured
20:48and silver-tongued,
20:50the Q rating
20:50overshadowed the quarterback.
20:53Going out for a pass.
20:54All right.
20:54With the AE-1,
20:55it's easy to shoot
20:56like a pro.
20:57The incomparable
20:58Canon AE-1.
20:59You know,
20:59he'll come across
21:00as cocky.
21:01Some fans liked him,
21:03some fans didn't.
21:05That's Joe's personality.
21:09To be a top NFL quarterback,
21:12you have to be
21:13a little top guy.
21:14You have to be able
21:15to sit back there
21:16with defensive linemen
21:17trying to take your head off
21:18and say,
21:19I can still fit this ball
21:20in between this linebacker
21:22and safety.
21:22First down pass
21:23ends up.
21:24Touchdown!
21:25I'll play with Joe Theismann
21:26any time he wants to play.
21:27He's a great leader.
21:29He's a tough guy.
21:31He's somebody
21:31that's going to fight
21:32to the end.
21:33That toughness
21:34was on full display
21:35in Washington's
21:36seventh game.
21:38The Redskins were playing
21:40for their first playoff berth
21:41in six years.
21:43I'm going to throw
21:44a quick hitch.
21:45I look out
21:46to my left side
21:47and all of a sudden
21:49Byron Hunt
21:49comes in from the right side
21:51unblocked
21:51and for some reason
21:52I turned and faced him.
21:56His helmet comes up
21:58under my single bar
21:59face mask
22:00and catches me
22:01right on the front tee.
22:04And so I lose
22:05my two front teeth.
22:07Joe T.
22:07The toughest individual
22:08I've ever seen
22:09in battle.
22:10As Hollywood as Joe
22:12was and could be
22:13he was still
22:15a caveman
22:16when it came to Sundays.
22:18I'm looking at Joe Gibbs
22:19and he's looking at me
22:20going
22:21holy crap.
22:23And I've got no teeth
22:24and I'm trying
22:25to talk to him.
22:26It's okay.
22:26I'll be all right.
22:27I can communicate.
22:29Joe Washington
22:30starts to run a sweep
22:31out to the right side.
22:33All of a sudden
22:33he turns
22:34and starts to come back
22:36my way.
22:37Now I all of a sudden
22:39have a chance
22:39to become a lead blocker.
22:41And I remember
22:42coaches saying
22:43throw your head
22:45across the front of him.
22:46Throw that right arm out.
22:48Now all of a sudden
22:48I'm possessed.
22:50I'm a pulling guard.
22:51He got a block
22:52from Seisman.
22:52He's to the five.
22:53He's to the end zone.
22:54Touchdown.
22:55Before I know it
22:56I'm being lifted up
22:57in the air.
22:58They're jumping up
22:59and down
22:59because Seisman
23:00threw the key block
23:02on Joe Washington's
23:03broken play.
23:04Touchdown run.
23:06I became a piglet.
23:09I did.
23:09I became a piglet.
23:11You know I had
23:11I made it sort of
23:13into that fraternity
23:14of hogs.
23:16With just seconds
23:17to go
23:17Seisman hooked up
23:18with Doc Walker
23:19setting up Mark Moseley
23:21for an NFL record
23:2221st consecutive field goal.
23:25A 42 yard attempt.
23:27Plenty long enough.
23:28It's good.
23:30Mark Moseley
23:31has broken
23:31the national football league record.
23:34The Redskins
23:35were going to the playoffs
23:36and their quarterback
23:37was all smiles.
23:40Joe where are you going
23:40after you take a shower?
23:42I have to go
23:42to the dentist Jack.
23:44That one blitz
23:45that came from the right side
23:46knocked my two front teeth
23:47out.
23:47You want to zoom in
23:48on him here.
23:49Bring in the camera.
23:50There goes his TV career.
23:52That's
23:52this is when we ought
23:54to have that cannon
23:55shot of you.
23:57That's terrible.
23:59Lied on Mark Moseley.
24:01Five of Washington's
24:02first six wins
24:03were ultimately decided
24:04by their kicker.
24:06In the Redskins
24:07final two games
24:08they won
24:09in more convincing fashion.
24:11He's gone.
24:12Touchdown.
24:13Washington Redskins.
24:15Washington beat the Saints
24:16and Cardinals
24:17and Cardinals
24:17by a combined margin
24:18of 55 to 10.
24:21Far side.
24:22Gets away from the man.
24:23Touchdown.
24:24Washington Redskins.
24:25Hey.
24:26He kicked our ass.
24:27That's what he did today, man.
24:28I'm sure you're going
24:29to get me all night.
24:30Despite finishing
24:31the strike-shortened season
24:32with an NFL-best
24:338-1 record,
24:35Washington's postseason
24:36prospects were not rosy.
24:38Four of their wins
24:39were by five points
24:40or less.
24:41Mark Moseley
24:42had finally missed
24:43a field goal.
24:44And their best receiver,
24:46Art Monk,
24:46was out for the playoffs
24:47with a stress fracture.
24:49You know,
24:50we weren't really
24:50an 8-1 football team
24:51in most people's minds.
24:53We were lucky.
24:54The real powerhouse
24:55in the conference
24:57had beaten us.
24:58So how good
24:59could we really be?
25:00I think the part
25:01about the 82 team
25:03that was so unique,
25:04we were dependent
25:06upon one another.
25:07We realized
25:09that we weren't good enough
25:11to get cocky.
25:14The Redskins
25:15were beginning
25:16to question themselves.
25:18Before their first
25:19playoff game
25:20against the Detroit Lions,
25:21John Riggins
25:22strolled into team headquarters
25:24with the answer.
25:26John never said much.
25:28When John spoke,
25:29everybody listened
25:30because he said
25:31things so infrequently.
25:33He went in
25:34and talked to Coach Buehler
25:35and said,
25:37I want the ball.
25:39He says,
25:39I'm ready to bust loose.
25:42And Coach Buehler
25:43told him
25:44to go see the man.
25:46I'd love to have
25:47heard the conversation,
25:49but I guarantee you
25:50Coach Gibbs
25:50had very little to say.
25:51I bet J.R.
25:52was doing all that.
25:54John said,
25:55we wanted to run the ball.
25:56You know,
25:57let's run it.
25:58Load the wagon.
26:05Regan's shifted
26:06into overdrive,
26:07running for 119 yards
26:09and wheeling
26:10Washington to victory.
26:12But inside the beltway,
26:13the big story
26:14was a choreographed salute
26:16to Art Monk.
26:17We decided,
26:17hey, man,
26:18you know,
26:18when you score,
26:19we're going to get together
26:20and we're going to have this jump.
26:21And really,
26:22we're jumping for Art.
26:24Filling in for the 6-2 Monk,
26:265-7 Smurf Alvin Garrett
26:28put on a larger-than-life performance.
26:31Alvin scores
26:32and everybody's so excited
26:33and Alvin forgot.
26:36He scores again.
26:38Back is Seisman.
26:39Quick lob
26:40into the corner of the end zone.
26:41Touchdown!
26:42Alvin Garrett
26:43with his second today.
26:44He forgot again.
26:46He scores a third touchdown.
26:48Near corner.
26:49He's got Garrett.
26:50He's got it.
26:51And this time,
26:52he remembers.
26:52Oh, look at this.
26:53They're swinging their arms.
26:54Oh, a volleyball high five.
26:56And like the Hogs,
26:58phenomenon,
26:58it just took off.
27:01The front bunch
27:02became the newest addition
27:03to Washington's cast
27:04of outrageous characters.
27:07Progress!
27:08Redskin, progress!
27:09Redskin, progress!
27:11In their second playoff game,
27:13the Minnesota Vikings
27:14issued a direct challenge
27:16to the Redskin offensive line.
27:18In Washington,
27:19everybody talked about the Hogs,
27:21this great offensive line.
27:23And the Vikings take it personal.
27:25So they start talking about,
27:27obviously,
27:28if you're gonna,
27:29I guess,
27:29cut up a pig or a hog,
27:31you butcher them.
27:32That's the worst thing
27:34they could have done.
27:3440 got first play.
27:3750 got second play.
27:4050 got third play.
27:4240 got fourth play.
27:4450 got fifth play.
27:45Inside and I'll bring a huge hole.
27:47The Vikings won't win anything.
27:49They were the ninth worst defense
27:51in the league.
27:53What makes them,
27:54what made any of these guys
27:55think they could stop
27:57the Redskins?
27:58I don't,
27:59I don't get that.
28:02Inside the 20,
28:03down to the 16-yard line.
28:05We had hand signals
28:06and Coach Bro
28:08going through these
28:09gyrations on the sideline.
28:11Why are they wasting time with this?
28:14We just want to run the same play
28:16over and over and over.
28:18John just didn't run through holes
28:20against the Minnesota Vikings.
28:22He ran over people.
28:25He ran around people.
28:27It was that game
28:28that he exploded.
28:30Big run, John Riggins.
28:33I remember hearing that horn a lot.
28:36It was a diesel horn
28:38that some fan brought into RFK.
28:40Yes, sir.
28:41Here it comes.
28:42Go 395.
28:43How he powered this thing
28:45was a big mystery to all of us.
28:47But he had that horn going off.
28:51And I'm telling you what,
28:52it was a charge.
28:53I could get goose pimples today
28:55thinking about that
28:56whenever I hear that noise.
28:58In all,
28:59he has carried the ball
29:0037 times
29:02for 185 yards.
29:04Field dives forward.
29:05Did he get it?
29:06Touchdown, John Riggins!
29:08Crowd screaming and yelling
29:10and cheering.
29:11John, ever the showman,
29:13takes his helmet off
29:14and bows to the crowd.
29:16This is John Riggins
29:17who does a bow
29:18at the 43-yard line.
29:21And then the place
29:22just goes electric
29:24with we want Dallas.
29:29I mean,
29:30it brings the hair up.
29:31It still does.
29:32Jimmy!
29:33Right, man!
29:35They said
29:35they're going to come in here,
29:36you know,
29:37they're the butchers
29:38and we're the hogs.
29:38The thing they forgot
29:39is before a hog
29:40goes to the butcher,
29:41somebody's got to kill it.
29:42Hog futures were on the rise.
29:45Only the Cowboys
29:46stood between the Redskins
29:47and Super Bowl XVII.
29:54Championship date
29:55with the Redskins' arch-rival.
29:57It just seems to be
29:58the natural instinct of hogs
30:00that when they see
30:00a Dallas Cowboys jersey,
30:02they want to tear it apart.
30:08We didn't like Dallas,
30:09they didn't like us.
30:10We have to beat these guys.
30:12I don't want to sit here
30:14all offseason
30:15again hearing about Dallas.
30:23I'm certain
30:24that threw out
30:2581 in RFK.
30:27You did not want
30:28to go there.
30:30And this season
30:31the Commanders
30:32are moving
30:33back to D.C.
30:39Safe to say
30:40the game's already over.
30:44A time,
30:45people have had
30:46this exact same
30:47feeling
30:47when they had to go
30:49into Great Conquest.
30:51It's what
30:52most guys think
30:53the Super Bowl
30:54experience will be like.
30:56But the Super Bowl
30:57pales in comparison
30:58to this.
31:04Matched against
31:05the great Randy White,
31:06Russ Grimm played
31:07the game of his life
31:08and the Redskins
31:09took control.
31:11We ran the ball
31:12like eight,
31:13nine times straight.
31:15Not so much
31:15as a statement.
31:16We just felt
31:17that we could run
31:17the football.
31:19Riggins picked up
31:21about seven
31:22on that first
31:23carry.
31:24And he moved
31:24about six people
31:25with him.
31:27Behind Grimm's
31:28fairytale performance,
31:30John Riggins
31:30ripped through
31:31the Cowboys
31:32for 140 yards.
31:37Washington was up
31:3811 points
31:39and Danny White
31:40was down
31:41for the count.
31:49first thought
31:49that went through
31:50my mind.
31:51Thank God
31:51he's out of there.
31:54They lose their
31:54starting quarterback.
31:55Got to be good
31:56for us.
31:57And Gary Huggaboom
31:58comes in.
31:59H-O-G-E-B-O-O-N-F.
32:01And then Huggaboom
32:02steps in.
32:02And my God,
32:04it's not
32:04Gary Huggaboom.
32:06It's Roger
32:06Staubach
32:07in Gary
32:07Huggaboom's
32:08uniform.
32:12So it was
32:13the highest
32:14of highs
32:14followed by
32:16being at a
32:17wake.
32:18Our place
32:19was
32:20silent.
32:22Then our
32:22defense,
32:23our defense
32:24stepped up
32:26and made
32:26another
32:26play.
32:38Wow.
32:39This was
32:39the moment.
32:41They were
32:42at it.
32:42There's a chance.
32:43They got a shot.
32:44Now they don't.
32:46The Redskins
32:47and their crew
32:48of characters
32:48were going
32:49to Super Bowl
32:5017.
32:51The only
32:52formality
32:52was running
32:53out the clock.
32:58The Redskins
32:59will lead
32:59by 14.
33:01Takeover
33:01at their own
33:0238.
33:03Joe sends
33:04the play in.
33:06Spread right,
33:0760 outside.
33:08Russ Grimm
33:09says,
33:09no.
33:11So he ain't
33:12no.
33:12He says,
33:12I want to run
33:1350 gut.
33:14I want to run
33:15at Randy.
33:16When the play
33:17came in,
33:17it was something
33:18like,
33:18why don't we
33:19run it outside?
33:20Let's just run
33:21the ball right
33:22at him again.
33:22The gibbis
33:23to Riggins
33:23over the left
33:24side before
33:25he's driven
33:25back.
33:26I look to
33:27the sidelines.
33:28Joe signals
33:29in 60 outside.
33:31All right,
33:31guys,
33:31we're going
33:31to run 60
33:32outside.
33:33Russ goes,
33:34no.
33:3550 gut.
33:36Riggins again,
33:38sliding right
33:38beyond the 45.
33:40What do you
33:41think,
33:41Russ?
33:41He goes,
33:4250 gut.
33:43Here's Riggins
33:44again from
33:45the left
33:45side,
33:45inside,
33:46outside,
33:46big yard
33:47first down.
33:48Okay,
33:48guys,
33:48I think
33:48this is
33:49working.
33:50Spread right,
33:5050 gut.
33:51Riggins is
33:52sailing up the
33:52yard.
33:53Hey,
33:54why don't we
33:54try this play?
33:5550 gut.
33:56He powers
33:57inside the 30,
33:58down there to 26.
34:00I look at Russ
34:01and he's going,
34:01Randy,
34:02it's coming at you.
34:03Riggins again
34:04is a straight
34:04carry.
34:05This had nothing
34:07to do with running
34:07the clock out.
34:09This was between
34:10Russ Grimm
34:11and Randy White
34:12and the offensive
34:13line and Randy White.
34:15They wanted to
34:16bloody him.
34:17They wanted to
34:17beat him into the
34:18ground.
34:19They wanted to
34:19bury.
34:21The game is
34:22over and the
34:23Redskins have
34:24won it 31 to
34:2570.
34:25You will never
34:26see that look
34:27on Randy White's
34:28face.
34:28He looked
34:28confused.
34:30Like,
34:31how did that
34:31happen?
34:33And they
34:33go to the
34:34Super Bowl.
34:35You watch
34:36so many
34:37Super Bowls.
34:38Wasn't here,
34:38I'd be home
34:39here having a
34:39little celebration
34:40to have people
34:40over.
34:41And now the
34:41same people
34:42will be
34:42watching me.
34:43And I
34:44love it!
34:45We're not
34:45real talented,
34:46we're not
34:46real great,
34:47but then we're
34:48the NFC
34:48champions,
34:48that's all
34:49that matters.
34:49The fact that
34:50we were going
34:51to a Super
34:51Bowl was
34:53anticlimactic.
34:58We had
34:59beat the
35:00team that
35:01everybody hated
35:02with a
35:03passion.
35:06That moment
35:07is the one
35:08moment that
35:08stands out in
35:09my mind more
35:10than any in
35:11my entire
35:11career as a
35:13football player.
35:16sense of
35:17deja vu
35:18surrounded
35:19Super Bowl
35:1917.
35:22The real
35:23Super Bowl
35:24was the
35:24NFC
35:25championship.
35:26I mean,
35:28if the
35:29AFC let
35:30Richard Todd
35:31get to the
35:31AFC
35:32championship
35:32game,
35:34they weren't
35:35very good.
35:37It's gonna
35:38be a...
35:38The AFC
35:39championship
35:39was Richard Todd
35:41versus David
35:41Woodley.
35:43Capacity
35:44crowd
35:453,104,000.
35:4811 years
35:49after jilting
35:49the Dolphins
35:50for the
35:50Canadian
35:51Football League,
35:52Joe Theisman
35:53could erase
35:53his biggest
35:54blunder.
35:56He could
35:57have played
35:58in three
35:58Super Bowls
35:59for Don
35:59Shula.
36:00Now,
36:01he was
36:01playing against
36:02Shula in
36:03his first.
36:05The rest
36:06of the Redskins
36:07were playing
36:08for what was
36:08then a
36:09staggering
36:09amount of
36:10money.
36:11It was
36:11kind of
36:12like,
36:12how much
36:13do we
36:13get if
36:14we win
36:15the Super
36:15Bowl?
36:16I think
36:17somebody said
36:17it was
36:17like $70,000
36:18and I
36:20think I
36:20was making
36:21$60,000
36:21that year
36:22so I
36:23only got
36:23$30,000
36:23because of
36:24the strike.
36:25This game's
36:26about the
36:26money,
36:27but it's
36:27about the
36:28ring.
36:29And it's
36:29worth $70,000
36:31and a big
36:32ring!
36:32A big
36:34blanking
36:35ring!
36:40Don Shula's
36:42Dolphins
36:42were also
36:43playing for
36:43that ring
36:44and they
36:44dominated
36:45the first
36:45half.
36:4676-yard
36:48touchdown
36:48pass!
36:49David
36:49Woodley
36:50caught the
36:50defense with
36:51their pants
36:51down.
36:53After
36:53struggling
36:54for the
36:54first 26
36:55minutes,
36:56Weisman put
36:56together an
36:5711-place
36:58scoring march
36:58before
36:59halftime.
37:10We are
37:11back.
37:16Let's
37:16kick off
37:17to him.
37:18Let's
37:18kick off
37:19to Fulton
37:19Walker.
37:27Let's
37:27stand on
37:28the
37:28sidelines
37:28and watch
37:29Fulton
37:30Walker run
37:31almost 100
37:31yards.
37:37We were
37:39ripe for
37:39the kill
37:39because of
37:40the Dallas
37:41win.
37:42The team
37:42was spent
37:43emotionally,
37:44physically
37:44spent.
37:46We needed
37:46to be
37:46forced back
37:47and desperate.
37:49In the
37:50second half,
37:51Washington's
37:52defense began
37:52suffocating
37:53David Woodley.
37:55He has no
37:56completions in
37:56the second
37:57half.
37:57That's right.
37:58even Joe
37:59Theisman's
38:00biggest play
38:01was as a
38:01defensive
38:02back.
38:03We're
38:03backed up
38:04on our
38:04own end
38:05and then
38:05Kim
38:06Boatkamper
38:06knocks it
38:07up in
38:07the air.
38:08My whole
38:09world goes
38:10into slow
38:11motion.
38:12I feel like
38:13I've got
38:13these giant
38:15cement
38:15slippers on
38:16and I
38:17look at the
38:18ball go up
38:18into the
38:19air.
38:19I looked at
38:20the intersection
38:20of where I
38:21thought the
38:21ball would
38:22land and if
38:23I could get
38:23my hand up
38:24underneath it,
38:25I might be
38:26able to
38:26strip it.
38:29Oh lordy!
38:30Was that
38:30almost the
38:31game breaker?
38:32And number
38:3358,
38:33Kim Boatkamper
38:34came very,
38:35very close
38:36to an
38:36interception
38:37for a
38:37touchdown.
38:39Theisman's
38:40stop set the
38:40stage for
38:41this team's
38:41defining moment.
38:43Trailing 17-13
38:45with 10 minutes
38:45to go.
38:47Washington
38:47bogged down
38:48on Miami's
38:4943.
38:50The Redskins
38:51entire season
38:52would come
38:52down to
38:53fourth and
38:54a yard.
38:56There was no
38:57doubt in my
38:58mind we had
38:58to go for it.
38:59This is who
39:00we were.
39:01We were the
39:02Washington Redskins.
39:03We were the
39:03Hogs.
39:04We were John
39:04Riggins.
39:05It had to be
39:0670 chip.
39:08The Redskins
39:09bet the farm
39:10on the Hogs.
39:12Let's go.
39:12Go line,
39:13go line.
39:13Eye left,
39:14tight wing,
39:1470 chip on
39:15white.
39:15Ready?
39:15Here comes
39:16the diesel.
39:17Here comes
39:18the diesel.
39:18Yellow 41!
39:20Yellow 41!
39:22Hunt!
39:23Hunt!
39:24There's the
39:25snap handle.
39:26He's got the
39:27first down to
39:2740.
39:28He's gone!
39:29The 40!
39:29The 40!
39:30The 40!
39:31He's gone!
39:32He's gone!
39:33Touchdown
39:34Washington Redskins!
39:36Woo!
39:37Woo!
39:39Holy cow!
39:40What a play!
39:4142-yard
39:42touchdown run
39:43on fourth and
39:44a foot.
39:45John Riggins
39:45has given
39:46the Redskins
39:46the lead
39:47in Super Bowl
39:53look at his
39:54face.
39:55Just look at
39:56the man's
39:57face.
39:57It tells you
39:58the entire
39:59story.
40:14That gentleman
40:15may be the
40:16nail in the
40:16carpet.
40:17No question.
40:18It is the
40:19nail in the
40:19carpet.
40:20World champ!
40:21Let's do it!
40:21World champ!
40:23It's my
40:23second year
40:24in the league
40:24and we just
40:26won a Super
40:26Bowl.
40:27Fucking
40:28Nebraska!
40:29Number one
40:29in the world!
40:31Super Bowl
40:32champ!
40:32Woo!
40:33In my
40:34mind, what was
40:36emblazoned
40:36there was
40:37Terry Bradshaw
40:39running off
40:40the field
40:41waving his
40:42finger
40:42and at that
40:43moment,
40:45the ball
40:45went up,
40:46the finger
40:47went up,
40:47and we were
40:48champions of
40:49the world.
40:50For the first
40:50time, it's
40:511942, the
40:53Washington Redskins
40:54have an NFL
40:55championship.
40:56Woo!
40:57Well done!
40:59It's the first
40:59Super Bowl that I
41:01was a part of,
41:02and those guys
41:03that were on that
41:03football team,
41:04out of 53, I
41:06bet you I'll
41:06probably, if
41:07somebody tested
41:08me, I could name
41:0951 or 52 of
41:10them, and I'd be
41:11upset for the
41:12guy that I
41:12forgot.
41:15Nothing beats
41:16the fellas.
41:16Nothing beats
41:17the moments with
41:18the guys.
41:19If I had to give
41:20the ring up, but I
41:21could keep my
41:22experience with the
41:22guys, I keep my
41:24experience with the
41:25fellas.
41:26We were a group
41:27of has-beens,
41:29would-have-beens,
41:30could-have-beens,
41:31nobody wants, and
41:33that became our
41:34battle cry.
41:35That became the
41:36common thread that
41:37bound us all.
41:43We were a group
41:44of guys who
41:45nobody had great
41:46expectations of
41:47except ourselves.
41:52Oh, I pulled it
41:53off.
