00:00lights up an nfl game more than a great quarterback duel both of these quarterbacks
00:05good as advertised the proverbial aerial circus right
00:12anyway fighters just don't want haymakers
00:16and when you talk about a duel like that
00:21that's almost like a duel at the okay crown really
00:28some of the most memorable games in nfl history have featured two qbs battling it out mono a mono
00:35each of the shootouts that made our list may have its own unique flavor
00:45or could you use a hot dog with chili mark sanchez is trying his best to hide a hot dog
00:51but there are
00:52some standard ingredients required for a great quarterback duel the recipe for brilliance is
01:02like we got a track meet going here a lot of points no defense
01:11that's a game where you have bragging rights you go home with gizelle say look here baby i'm the man
01:16i kick pay nanny's ass i think for a classic duel first of all you got to have a stakes
01:21game
01:22it has to be minimum playoff game preferably a championship game
01:28no it doesn't necessarily have to be in the postseason it doesn't necessarily have to be two
01:32big name guys these are like hall of fame numbers for and stafford
01:39while no two goals may be exactly alike each of the qb clashes that made our countdown have one thing
01:46in
01:47common plenty of excitement when it mattered most it's always the finish it's the fourth quarter you
01:53can take the first three quarters you can take the yards you can take the touchdowns and all that i
01:57could care less it's about who has the ball last about that i want to see two guys duking it
02:03out and
02:03i want to see the guy who has the ball last to win the game to me that's a great
02:07quarterback duel
02:08no way this should be number 10 on the list i mean i was there and i'm still in awe
02:21of what i saw
02:231087 yards in offense that would place it tied for third all time two of the great quarterbacks right
02:30two hall of famers okay let's start with that and then two offenses that let them loose the 49ers with
02:36their west coast attack young wants to throw goes to the right sideline all alone turner should get
02:41in touchdown 49ers and the bills with their k-gun attack kelly to throw he fires it a wide open
02:49thurman thomas touchdown we're able to beat respected defenses that were good this buffalo defense has not
02:56played the way it normally can
03:01kelly and young may have combined for an impressive 852 passing yards and six touchdowns
03:08but the reason this qb duel made our list involves a first ever goose egg no punts and jerry rice
03:15didn't
03:16even play three of those quarters in an nfl box score what i remember is looking at the stat sheet
03:23afterwards and saying did anybody put in this game now it goes for the
03:26and goes on for buffalo that's the lars again chris moore and klaus wilmsmeyer did not step foot on the
03:33field neither king had to punt once that's just how effective the offensive were no reason to have
03:41punters in a game where jim kelly and steve young are the quarterbacks there's another requirement for
03:46a great quarterback duel no punts that's kind of the essence of perfection like a baseball perfect game
03:54in addition to punts our number 10 duel was missing something else like the greatest receiver in nfl
04:01history wow for steve to put up that many yards without jerry rice in the game jerry rice has not
04:07gotten up might have caught a knee in the helmet now it's just cracking into a whole new level of
04:12epicness that was the game that jerry rice left early with a concussion to think that that game
04:18happened without jerry rice is astounding when you look at the numbers if that game had you know
04:25another quarter or two to it it probably would have gone into the hundreds and there still wouldn't have
04:30been a punt
04:35like all the great duels on our list this one also came down to the wire so why is it
04:41ranked number 10
04:43because the outcome wasn't decided by a qb
04:57it's probably a game we should revisit more on nfl network let's put that on the classic rotation i'd
05:03like to see that one one sunday night at about you know one one in the morning crack open a
05:07beer and
05:08watch it coming up getting into a duel with peyton manning is no easy the number nine quarterback
05:13duel of all time peyton manning versus tony romo in 2013. oh i remember that game it went bonkers yeah
05:21it was a back and forth game between the cowboys and broncos and and what a quarterback duel it was
05:26between peyton manning and tony romo amazing game shootout with peyton manning who would have thunk
05:31that tony would keep up with peyton here's a shoulder pass julius thomas catches a simple
05:36touchdown peyton manning's 2013 season is the greatest quarterback season of all time to date
05:48he put up more yards more touchdowns and had a game like this an incredible scintillating performance
05:54peyton looking right a rose right welker has a denver touchdown while peyton's 2013 season was rare
06:02in our number nine goal manning did something else uncomfortable with the play fake he ran for a
06:08touchdown pey manning with a 7.57 second 40 goes untouched all of a sudden you see peyton manning
06:16holding up the ball in the end zone peyton manning had not run for a touchdown in forever
06:20it took him four years to run five to the end zone peyton manning had the best supporting
06:26casting away romo had no support demarco murray only ran for 43. hey hey hey he had dez brian
06:33that's it yards
06:36romo got sacked four times with the broncos pass rush romo was out there practically by himself in that game
06:41romo was keeping plays alive for four and five seconds spinning and finding a guy downfield i mean it was
06:47magical romo back and look at the look at him run it throws to wick touchdown he comes back he
06:52takes
06:52the lead he does everything that you have to do he looks he's out playing peyton they might as well
06:57just take both sets of linemen off the field because this is strictly a seven on seven passing
07:02league right now and it's manning and romo and to this point romo has got the best of it
07:08boy tony romo you would have thought tony romo was stabbing this way to canton ohio during that game
07:13quick screen beasley on the left side touchdown daddy where romo
07:19in classic dueling fashion our number nine game came down to a last minute throw 48 48 here a
07:27truly historic game snap to romo throws back he intercepted he threw for 500 yards he threw for
07:33a number of touchdowns the cowboys should have won the game and at the very last second he throws
07:38the interception that loses right this is the ultimate romo game the worst time it could come
07:46what's been an otherwise magnificent afternoon for you know what the story will be romo can't handle
07:52it two things happen on that play that no one talks about one is that the rookie tight end who
07:56he's targeting on the play runs a pretty bad run
08:01into him and he steps into his leg but no one cares about that all anyone cares about is the
08:06tony
08:07romo narrative that here we go tony romo choked again you can't help but feel bad for tony romo
08:12you know his best game ever as an nfl player comes against peyton manning who's just a little bit
08:19better and found a way to win that ball game
08:23you can't fault either of those quarterbacks 51 48 game you've got to give credit to the quarterbacks
08:29for getting it done i think this game could be higher if you really think about what it represented
08:34during that super if you look at the numbers over 900 yards 10 touchdowns accounted for
08:4199 points scored
08:44bowl season for the denver broncos this was one of the biggest tests that they had 900 yards of offense
08:50from two guys that sit pretty high in the record books it was a pretty special game to be at
09:03that's a quarterback duel that we're talking about 894 yards passing it has been a spectacular
09:09show of aerial fireworks for both teams you had two guys who could throw the ball about as well as
09:15you
09:15could throw it you could easily make a case for that game being more entire than eight both of these
09:20quarterbacks were as good as advertised best game ever dan marino's first game off the achilles injury
09:25missed all the year the year before seeing him come back from an achilles and put up a game like
09:30that
09:30doesn't surprise me
09:38on a muddy field in the 1994 season opener marino faced doubts about his ability to rebound from that
09:45devastating injury as well as an ascending afc east rival bledsoe was absolutely positively the
09:53heir apparent he performed so well at the end of his first year that people hoped he could somehow
09:59stand up against the dolphins marino my childhood heroes are still playing elway and marino and now
10:05get out on the field and instead of being my heroes now i just want to go kick their butts
10:12week one right away right out of the chute boom marino slogging in the mud back to pass he throws
10:18downfield has a hand open mark ingram has it at the 30 he is gone danny marino is back baby
10:25two bloodstones matching the great dan marino at the peak of the completion touchdown for
10:31touchdown fires it up the field then coach open 40 35 30 breaks the tackle touchdown
10:37that's the way to throw the ball through that's perfect growth and the momentum now belongs to
10:43the men in blue marino's greatest efforts were when the opposing quarterback also had a great
10:49effort you think back to that bledsoe game and they're going toe-to-toe you say give me the rock
10:55i got to keep going downfield marino to fire a touchdown dolphins
11:03it was an epic game you know there's nothing that lights up an nfl game more than a great
11:08quarterback duel after the fourth touchdown pass today for bledsoe new england goes back on top of
11:13miami but what will marino do next that should be number one on your list you know why because on
11:22fourth and five dan marino had the onions to go deep down the field trailing 35 32 late in the
11:28fourth
11:28quarter marino all they needed was a field goal he threw a touchdown prize not everyone on the
11:35biggest play in our number eight duel got to get it almost to the 30th everybody including the defense
11:44expected us to go for the five yards to pick up the first down to maintain possession of the ball
11:49to me
11:49one of the
12:04irving fryer touchdown see you later dolphins way you talk about championship courage a flame burns
12:12inside batman dan marino quarterback duel of all time the fourth and two game 2009
12:20although they've met a lot of times during the course of their careers it was the game where
12:25two of them were both playing at the highest level there just isn't enough room to include all the great
12:34brady versus manning matchups over the years no question hands down the rivalry of the decade
12:40so how did this duel make our list it comes down to simple math both quarterbacks have never combined
12:47for as many yards or touchdowns than in that week 10 game in 2009 really
12:56you've got to have a brady manning game on the list in this game in 2009 and they were both
13:01putting
13:01great numbers especially considering how good those defenses were the number one scoring defense
13:05in the nfl is the indianapolis colts and so far they've been getting scorched down here welcome
13:12back good job thomas
13:13direct snap to brady looks fires left
13:1631 indianapolis 14. brady has always played well against the colts brady is so good in the pocket
13:26they don't get to him if this were heavyweight championship fight i think they would be sending
13:30new england to a neutral corner right now to give india break the 2009 game had a different
13:34tenor than most of the manning brady rivalry games the script had flipped manning and brady have had
13:40some great great duels over the years after manning had a few tough games against the patriots early in
13:45his career he has pretty much with consistency ripped the patriot defense apart now you need three scores in
13:5314 minutes
14:08with a six point lead and 208 remaining in the fourth quarter
14:12even bill belichick got caught up in our number seven duel and the patriots
14:18are gonna go for it on fourth down i can't believe this
14:21brady throws it at the field it is short of the first down it is short of the punch take
14:26over
14:27kevin falk was this close had they just punted it away they would have won the game
14:35colts scored with 13 seconds left and won by one point
14:41take those 13 seconds away simple
14:51another quarterback like that with new england uh you kind of expect the unexpected you could say
14:57that the game where belichick went for it on fourth down ranks above the championship games because
15:01belichick so feared manning that he chose to do something that was considered almost
15:08insane could there be a few things to talk about after this game
15:11the best part was the debate afterwards the aaron schatzes and the football outsiders guys they all
15:19came out of the woodwork of the basement and they started saying advanced statistical analysis says
15:25that to go for it on fourth two in that situation was the right play
15:33while plenty of question marks surrounded belichick's decision manning took the ball and put an
15:39exclamation point on our number seven door manning looks for the quick throw
15:44it was one of the all-time great games if you like quarterbacks
16:02flinging the ball all over the yard manning against brady doesn't get any better than that
16:07number six quarterback duel of all time dickey and theisman light up monday night 1983
16:14this was a great one 771 yards to the air but how many football fans do you think if you
16:21polled
16:21would say i remember where i was for dickey theisman nothing like being 15 years old without a driver's
16:28license no girlfriend nothing to do but stay at home on a monday night and root for your redskins
16:32the legendary curly lambeau field a sellout crowd 56 000 plus viewers who expected a blowout between
16:40the defending super bowl champs and a team with the nfl's worst defense were entertained by the
16:45highest scoring game in monday night football history
16:51it's like we got a track meet going here it's got a football game put punters out of work
16:56in terms of quarterback duels i'm not sure theisman versus lynn dickey is going to
17:00really tickle anyone's uh excitement meter but when it's the highest scoring monday night football
17:05game of all time you have to give that some respect it was a great quarterback duel between dickey and
17:11joe theisman who was at that time one of the league's best quarterbacks i'll tell you something
17:16joe theisman he is a spunky little guy we'll talk your ear off i would certainly rank it higher than
17:21six
17:21when it came to entertain value quality of play i think america's loving this one
17:28i sure am we felt like we could score a lot of points we just didn't count on the other
17:33guys
17:33scoring quite that many i was there that's right nobody could stop anybody
17:44our secondary that year had a nickname the pearl harbor bombs away they're not planning on running
17:51it in that ball was thrown right on the money is really sharp tonight lynn dickey was one of those
17:56quarterbacks he sort of lost in in football history would never be considered a great quarterback but he
18:01could really throw it the coaches had a meeting a little while ago and they decided the first
18:06team to 50 wins
18:09it became more and more obvious that we were going to have to figure out a way to match them
18:14point for
18:15point looking to take the lead once again in a seesaw battle thysman looking comes into the end zone
18:20touchdown washington we score a touchdown i hold for the extra point i come jogging to the sideline
18:25reached over grabbed a gatorade russ grimm walked up to me he said let's go i said we just
18:30scored he said so did they let's go our number six duel saw five lead changes in the fourth quarter
18:36alone trailing by just the point with under a minute to play washington had a chance to go ahead
18:43for good the redskins would have won if thysman had just gotten mosley a little bit closer on that
18:49final drive being the holder for mark i knew exactly what his distances were there's the shot
18:55of the way before that is fired to charlie brown everything went according to plan except we didn't
19:01make the field goal
19:11i always thought both quarterbacks
19:14mark bosley made four field goals in that game missed that one should have retired after the game
19:20because it really wasn't going to get any better he's been already had his ring he wasn't going to
19:24get another and that was probably lynn dickey's finest moment as an nfl quarterback coming up
19:30find out which two holes and now the number five quarterback duel of all time john elway versus
19:36bernie kosar the 1987 afc championship it's unfortunate that this game is remembered by ernest
19:42biner's fumble because this is just a fun football game with two qbs slinging it all over the place
19:47from mile high stadium it's the rematch the browns have long awaited there was a lot going on in
19:52that game i mean the bitter memory for the browns of the previous year and elway leading the drive
19:5798 and a half yard drive the browns felt that they were even better in 87 than they were in
20:0486
20:04different venue same quarterbacks bernie kosar for the browns john elway for the broncos for the right
20:12to go to the super bowl there was a revenge factor and if you want to talk about a team
20:16that was
20:16looking to right a wrong in their minds
20:22elway drops the throw for the first time
20:28john elway got the broncos out of the gate fast first with his arm then his legs the most important
20:36difference between these two teams was elway's scrambling ability every time they seem to get
20:41them or stop there goes elway running with the football
20:47bernie kosar really could not run that's the difference
20:53john elway made a ton of plays in that game in which he moved including a very long touchdown pass
21:00to mark jackson which i think was close to 90 yards jackson at the 25 breaks the tackle gets out
21:06over the 30 the 35 gets a block control and here he comes down the sideline
21:14the broncos went ahead in that game 21 to 3 and in the second half bernie kosar was so incredibly
21:21sharp throwing the football he was so precise in that second half perfect touch on the football
21:27by bernie kosar it was like watching da vinci paint something stroke by stroke bernie kosar painted
21:35over the denver defense for 356 passing yards he was as accurate a long passer as i've ever seen
21:43once we started scoring in the second half they couldn't stop us and we couldn't stop them
21:48bernie's back to throw fires touchdown slaughter the browns have struggled back into an even steven
21:54football game john elway showed you why he is john elway it was a great game with two quarterbacks
22:02having tremendous days but it has to fumble near the end of the game
22:16this was just a goofy mistake i mean that was really
22:20a rembrandt of a quarterback performance if it wasn't for the fumble we'd be talking about that game
22:26not only as a great quarterback duel but as one of the greatest comebacks in nfl playoff history
22:33the fact that this game ended with a fumble by a running back shouldn't affect the ranking and the
22:37performance of these quarterbacks i have no words when i see the fumble i just have no words there was
22:44no loser in four quarterback duel of all time joe name it clashes with john unitas 1972 that game
22:54really reminded me of ali frazier three in manila because frazier and ali both were thought to have
23:01seen their better days i look at nameth unitas kind of the same way anytime the two teams meet
23:06the greatest interest has to be the anticipated duel of two pairs of shoes and the men who fill them
23:13unitas was in his last year at baltimore he finished that year only threw four touchdown passes that whole
23:17season there doesn't seem to be any chance that he's going to turn back the clock and have one of
23:22those johnny unitas days but he does johnny unitas completed 26 of 45 passes for 376 yards
23:30that was his 27 300 yard passing game you say that today seems so what that was an nfl record
23:40at that
23:41point far and away
23:46nameth was coming off two years where he had been injured and people were starting to think that even
23:50though he was not an old player he was certainly a declining player joe nameth riddled the colts defense
23:56for nearly 500 yards 496 20 passes and completed 15 six touchdowns and six touchdowns name it through for
24:10496 i think it was and he only completed 15 passes he was a mad bomber 15 passes 15 okay
24:18percent of his
24:19passes were touchdowns that he completed for 496 yards
24:27now let that settle i think you have to call that his greatest statistical performance ever
24:32he threw touchdowns of 65 79 and 82 yards when you average it all out his average attempt
24:40netted 33 yards that's mad bombing
24:47there was still plenty of time for a baltimore comeback and come back they did unitas took to
24:53the air it was almost like johnny you reached down deep and came up one more time showing why he
24:59was
24:59the most respected quarterback at that point in history as he expertly picked his spots and moved
25:05his team downfield the grand old man had done it the colts were back in the game each guy pushed
25:11the bar up
25:12and then the other guy would match it and push the bar up further it was a beautiful thing to
25:17watch
25:18broadway joe fired the final shot in this duel
25:22late in the fourth quarter to ice a 44 34 jets win
25:30when you talk about a duel like that that's almost like a duel at the okay corral
25:35they had it out both he and unitas had combined for 822 yards through the air over one half mile
25:43it was not a passing league back in 1972 exactly we were not accustomed to watching quarterback those
25:49numbers in 1972 they might as well have thrown for 1 000 yards each each i'm serious let's just drop
25:59back
25:59and throw seemingly 70 percent of the snaps the 1972 game in some ways could be brought out as a
26:07template for what the nfl has become and this was 1972 coming up a super duel obviously the difference
26:17between the two players is so great but there was a stretch in that game where jake de lome is
26:22going toe
26:22to toe at tom brady together jake de lome and tom brady threw for 649 yards all about that the
26:30highest
26:31combined total in super bowl history the patriots staring at the throw and he throws a perfect strike
26:39though brady de lome has yards it lacks the legendary luster of our number three selection
26:48the number three quarterback duel of all time bradshaw meets staubach in super bowl 13.
26:55you look back over the course of super bowls you don't see too many times where quarterbacks
27:01get out there and just really duke it out but on this day that's pretty much the way it was
27:07it was a remarkable clash of styles caught by tony hill at the 20 the 15 touchdown cowboys
27:17staubach was playing under the thumb of tom landry remember bradshaw was sort of a winging quarterback
27:24in the highest scoring super bowl to that point terry bradshaw threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns
27:33he was as good of a big game quarterback as there's ever been right there with bart star and the
27:38other
27:39guys in the end zone and it's hot for a touchdown
27:41gary bradshaw on third down eight of nine including two touchdowns that's clutch
27:49steelers had those big receivers cowboys
27:57roger staubach quarterback like staubach doesn't know the meaning of the word quick quarterback like
28:02bradshaw well there are a lot of words he didn't know the meaning of
28:08before the game cowboys linebacker thomas hollywood henderson made headlines when he said
28:14terry bradshaw couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the c and the a terry is not the kind of
28:19guy
28:19that was really affected by that kind of stuff i i really don't think that bothered him terry bradshaw
28:24called all his own plays and staubach had all his plays sent in for him here's the guy's thought of
28:29the dummy and he's really running the offense and the guy that everybody thinks of is the smart guy
28:33and the leader who's actually the guy who's doing what the coach tells him to do every bradshaw ain't
28:37the sharpest knife in the drawer then again he's made dumb into a millionaire business hard to be
28:45the hollywood henderson thing water up a duck's back i'm in the talk show industry so i know that
28:50an idiot babbling means nothing to intelligent people and i'm not sure why i insulted when i
28:55said that it might have been myself you need some help to be a great quarterback and i think we
29:02saw
29:03that in super bowl 13. it's third down and three dallas at the fifth bracket i just thought back
29:08christopher right on the money in the end zone big title back in the end zone jackie smith and he
29:15drops it in the end zone jackie smith all by himself the difference in that quarterback
29:21though was jackie smith chopping the pass oh bless his heart he's got to be the sickest man in america
29:27if he catches that ball there's one less lombardi trophy in that trophy case over on the south side
29:36with under seven minutes to play the steelers held an 18-point lead to have that kind of lead
29:41it should be game over i mean this is the steel curtain the steelers could not put this guy in
29:47this team away roger drops back fires it out of the flat for billy joe dupree to the five and
29:52in for
29:52the touchdown the cowboys may still be alive you're going this can't happen and it's another
29:57first down to the cowboys i'm starting to get a little nervous this can't happen here he is
30:02firing this can't happen can it isn't it amazing this is not over yet roger is giving some kind of
30:11a
30:11performance drops back two steps bumps once goes deep in the end zone caught touchdown oh maybe it
30:17can't there was drama till the very end 22 seconds on the clock and almost the cowboys remote chance for
30:25victory disappeared into the arms of rocky blight
30:32the quarterbacks beat the defenses that day didn't always happen in championship football
30:37some of these quarterbacks who may have competed in big time quarterback duels
30:41they may have choked like dogs in the super bowl these two guys did not shrink in the moment
30:46they rose to the occasion haven't been quarterback battles in the super bowl and that one was probably
30:51the best we've ever had in the biggest game i might put stallback bradshaw in super bowl 13 number one
30:58to me that's the most iconic super bowl of all time coming up did we drop the ball two quarterback
31:04rule of all time aaron rogers and kurt warner go wild in the 2009 wild card game yep it was
31:11a passing of the
31:12torch type of game you had warner but really that was his last great game and then you had rogers
31:18you
31:18see from that game this is the next great quarterback young in the nfl warner had just
31:23been in the super bowl rogers would be getting there that's kind of where their careers intersect
31:29kurt warner was 29 of 33 379 yards and five touchdowns in that wild card game it is 14 to
31:37nothing arizona
31:38five touchdowns four incompletions i don't know that there was a better game in his career
31:43packard had a pretty darn good defense and he schwedered he did that against charles woodson
31:48he did that against clay matthews that was an excellent defense that season warner's got time
31:53steps up throws over the middle it's caught by ducet at the 10 spins out of attack with the five
31:57touchdown
31:59to go toe-to-toe with this rising star and aaron rogers and emerge victorious it is 31 to 10
32:06cardinals
32:07in my mind sealed it for kurt warner as a hall of fame quarterback
32:13i always wondered what type of quarterback kurt could be if he could move what would he look like
32:19well he's in green bay same guy same arm same accuracy except aaron rogers has got the legs
32:26it's almost the perfect quarterback rogers looks drills the legs out of the hand
32:35aaron rogers to me he's the finest people don't talk about aaron rogers and how well he could move
32:42in his prime he could move so well in his prime that 17 years after this game he still can
32:50kind of move
32:52occasionally thrower ever of the football the most incredibly accurate with the most incredible
32:59velocity aaron rogers threw for 423 yards on the day and four touchdowns all in an epic second half
33:07comeback it felt like the cardinals were hopelessly ahead throughout the entire second half
33:13aaron rogers was just unstoppable
33:17tightrooping to the sideline jordie nelson to the pylon for the touchdown
33:22the Packers climbed back into it 31-24 in the fourth quarter the cardinals cannot stop the
33:29packer offense rogers and warner matched each other nearly blow for blow
33:37by the end of regulation the game was dead even at 45 all we're tied at 45
33:48a minute gone by in overtime the real irony of that game is that defense decided it
34:03really was kind of the first time we even noticed that there was a defense involved in that game
34:08the way it ended that was like that that's all we wanted more it was a great game don't get
34:15me wrong
34:16those were unbelievable performances but number two i'm not sure a great quarterback duel the
34:21office has scored 90 points the office has scored 90 points to be roethlisberger hitting homes in the
34:27end zone it's got to end that way to me i mean that's like having two gunfighters standing in
34:31the street and one gets hit by a bus that's not a great duel how that game ended to me
34:37doesn't take
34:38anything away from how well the two quarterbacks played i'll go back to states it's the playoffs it's
34:43a young gun against an old gun how can you not be fired up they say this they say this
34:49it can't end
34:49a defensive i'd like to speak to the panel you are i would love i am the pack yes this
34:56should be
34:57number two it deserves to be brain you know as the second greatest quarterback duel of all time and
35:02to me it had to be a great contender for number one coming up with a grudge and now the
35:07number one
35:08quarterback duel of all time ken o'brien outguns dan marino 1986. splish d fish there's no rivalry that
35:18sickens me more than dolphins jets i think the jets fans hatred for the dolphins stems all to dan
35:24marino in the 1983 draft they had a chance to get him they took kenny o'brien new york jets
35:28take
35:29quarterback ken o'brien of california davis when the jets drafted o'brien the fans that were at the draft
35:41in new york city i thought they were going to tear the hotel down the folks in new york are
35:45still
35:45saying how could you take kenny o'brien when dan marino was there jets fans they get left with ken
35:51o'brien
35:52dan marino goes on to do dan marino things with his flowing locks and his cannon arm and he's doing
35:57ads for totes he's just everything that jets fans aren't he's literate he's beautiful he's smart he's
36:04talented dan marino is the anti-jet fan brian was a real good nfl quarterback he didn't deliver to
36:11the jets what marino did except on this one fateful day if you enjoy defense please exit through the
36:21rear cabin immediately the quarterback would just drop back throw and it was complete
36:25the brian back to throw brian's got the time you almost didn't even realize that defense was on the
36:30field there was nobody with a 20 yards of pocket there was no sense at any point in that game
36:36that
36:36anybody was going to be stopped don shula give her some defense for god's sake how do you score 45
36:43points and don't win a game you got to give credit for the quarterback that's what they're paid to do
36:48for making it happen both were spectacular a lot of big players a lot of long bombs that were
36:54thrown right on the money for touchdowns by both teams if you're a defensive coach you're in deep
37:01trouble
37:05i think both teams got a little shell-shocked because it was just up and down the field up and
37:12down the field what is this pinball and pretty soon you lose your confidence it was who's gonna have
37:17the ball last with just over a minute to play the jets had the ball last trailing by seven
37:23what an unbelievable finish but time was running out five seconds left in the game
37:28o'brien throwing over the middle
37:41new york's good fortune continued in overtime
37:44as soon as we won the coin toss i knew we were going to score everything was going our way
37:48at that
37:48point
38:08when you talk about quarterback duels that's what you like to see
38:11a lot of numbers and a lot of yards on the board 884 passing yards dan marino ken o'brien
38:19it was a
38:19truly remarkable shootout our number one selection has yards but should it be a playoff game
38:27no it doesn't have to be a playoff game did it have yards did it have points did it have
38:32drama
38:32did it have cool uniforms yes yes yes and yes absolutely this should be number one i was there at
38:39that game and i felt really good for ken o'brien that game kind of put some credibility for the
38:44jets taking ken o'brien number one on that day he got the better of dan marino you really want
38:51me to
38:51back off my proclamation that this is the greatest quarterback duel of all time by throwing out there
38:56really ken o'brien what was he i am steadfast in my declaration this is the greatest quarterback
39:03duel of all time end of discussion and yes it included ken o'brien i apologize but that's nfl history
39:10i can't change it
39:14ah man ken o'brien
