00:00over games that season.
00:01What a great catch by Randy Moss!
00:03This is as good a running back as I've seen emerge from the college ranks in many, many years.
00:08Eric Dickerson!
00:09Wow!
00:10He is awesome!
00:12And we all went...
00:15Ha!
00:16Hey!
00:20Rookies get a bum rap in the NFL.
00:22These guys come in this league. This ain't like playing Wake Forest now.
00:25They get hazed.
00:26I promise you, no lie. I can't even feel my arm or legs.
00:30Struggle to adjust.
00:31Rookies all over the place. Get them lined up right.
00:34And just plain picked on.
00:36The ball! Now don't move my ball up! Get your ass back!
00:39But there are a precious few who break the mold.
00:43Has the kid from Boston College been good today or what?
00:46To make our list, you need both individual and team success.
00:51The Steelers win it over time!
00:53Without further ado, the top ten rookie seasons of all time.
01:00The number ten rookie season of all time.
01:02Adrian Peterson.
01:04Who made up this list?
01:07Hand off Adrian Peterson.
01:08I mean, who made... How could he be number ten?
01:11This guy is insane!
01:13He is the best running back I remember coming to the league for a long time.
01:18I have not seen that kind of speed, that kind of size, that kind of strength in one running back,
01:26maybe ever in my lifetime.
01:30With the seventh pick in the 2007 NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Adrian Peterson.
01:39Despite running for more than 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns in only nine games in 2007, our number ten
01:47rookie still can't dodge his skeptics.
01:49I think Adrian Peterson is a little overrated.
01:51I think he's soft.
01:53What?
01:53He'll have a big game, then he'll disappear for a couple games.
01:56I'm not a huge Adrian Peterson fan.
01:58He was a dominant player on a team that had the offensive line to allow his skills as a running
02:04back to shine.
02:05And it's loose!
02:06And there he goes!
02:07Touchdown!
02:13But even Peterson's biggest doubters couldn't deny how impressive he was against the Bears in week six.
02:20He had over 200 yards rushing in the game against the Chicago Bear defense.
02:25That was one of the best in the National Football League.
02:28Runs for a bear!
02:29And then he reads the ball!
02:30He's inside the body!
02:32To the 20!
02:33Great block by Ferguson!
02:35Touchdown!
02:37He was against what I thought was a pretty good defense that all of a sudden looked like a Pop
02:41Warner team trying to catch him.
02:43He breaks the tackle!
02:44And Adrian Peterson is loose!
02:47All of a sudden, these guys who were supposed to be so good couldn't touch him.
02:51And Adrian Peterson is gone!
02:58I could not keep up with him.
03:00This is defending NFC champions.
03:03I didn't want to believe the hype on Adrian Peterson when halfway through his rookie season, people are saying he's
03:08one of the greatest running backs ever.
03:11And he's only played like seven games.
03:13And then he played the San Diego Chargers.
03:15Jackson hands the ball off to Peterson.
03:17Hand on Adrian Peterson.
03:1820 carries, 145 yards.
03:2123 carries, 186 yards.
03:24Uncle!
03:24I mean, seriously.
03:25It was two yards here, three yards here.
03:27But soon later, you know, it's going to come open.
03:32And he rips off 296 yards against that defense.
03:37Sold.
03:38Okay.
03:39296 yards for Adrian Peterson.
03:42The greatest rushing performance in the history of the National Football League.
03:48Our number 10 rookie season ended in Hawaii.
03:51But to Peterson, the Pro Bowl was no vacation.
03:54I remember being at the Pro Bowl and him being real serious over there.
03:58And I was on the other side saying, uh-oh, and sure enough, MVP for him.
04:02But it was a football game for him.
04:03And he was going to play hard.
04:04And I like that about him.
04:06The offensive linemen who blocked for him, who weren't his teammates, just were amazed by the effort that he showed.
04:12And it wasn't just a case of a rookie not knowing you're supposed to slow down a little bit in
04:16the Pro Bowl.
04:16He just knows one speed.
04:23I think he got shortchanged at 10.
04:25That's probably too low for him.
04:27I think he had an incredible impact right away in this league.
04:31And I'll tell you what.
04:33He's good.
04:34The Lions will get their hats handed to him, but that kid is sick.
04:37I wondered when, if ever, will the defenders catch up to him in that rookie season.
04:42The more and more he did, he just started to think that maybe they just can't catch up to him.
04:45Maybe this guy really is that good.
04:48Can you guess which of these quarterbacks made our list?
04:51It's rare for a rookie quarterback to make an impact in the NFL.
04:55Back in 1983, even John Elway looked like a bust in his first season.
05:00But a few QBs have had early success.
05:04Not one, not two, but three rookie quarterbacks led their teams to the playoffs in the 2012 season.
05:13Unbelievable play by Andrew Luck.
05:15Robert Griffin III was named the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
05:20RG3, Electrified!
05:22And all Russell Wilson did was tie Peyton Manning with the most touchdowns thrown by a rookie.
05:28But all three got knocked off the list in favor of another gunslinger.
05:33The number nine rookie season of all time, Big Ben Roethlisberger.
05:382004.
05:43The words magic carpet ride come to mind when I think of Ben Roethlisberger's rookie season.
05:48I'm telling you, that was a terrific fight by Big Ben.
05:52Better put your seatbelt on.
05:53We're going for a hell of a ride, baby.
05:57In April of 2004, Big Ben left small-town Ohio, only to end up the last man sitting at the
06:05draft.
06:06He's sitting in the green room on draft day 2004.
06:09He's watching Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers come off the top.
06:12Robert Gallery, Reggie Williams, Dante Robinson.
06:16I honestly don't know.
06:18I don't know why he dropped.
06:19But boy, people in Pittsburgh are certainly glad it worked out the way it did.
06:23The Steelers drafted Ben Roethlisberger with the thought that he would be the man for years to come.
06:28But I know they didn't expect it to have to do it that soon.
06:32Remember Tommy Maddox was supposed to be the Steelers starter that year.
06:36Stay in the game, man.
06:37One play away.
06:38He gets hurt in the second game against the Ravens.
06:40And look at Maddox.
06:41Tommy Maddox is hurt.
06:42He's holding that right arm.
06:43There is a new quarterback, and he is the rookie out of Miami of Ohio, Ben Roethlisberger.
06:48He gets into the game, and then the Steelers never stop winning.
06:52Yeah, point out whoever on the Ravens injured him and put Roethlisberger in there and just
07:01bar that guy from Baltimore.
07:04You mean to tell me they could have gone another year or two without dealing with Ben Roethlisberger?
07:11Yeah, I bet that guy regrets he injured Tommy Maddox.
07:17Ben is running right, running right.
07:19Throws the ball to the pylon and the pass is caught for the touchdown.
07:24In 1976, Mike Kruchek, quarterback Pittsburgh, to a then-NFL record six wins to start his career.
07:30He wasn't that good.
07:31A number nine rookie more than doubled that mark, going 14-0.
07:36Throws it down the field.
07:38We got it.
07:39We got it.
07:39Touchdown.
07:40Along the way, he helped end New England's record winning streak at 21 games.
07:46He's trying to run under it.
07:47He does.
07:47Touchdown.
07:48Touchdown.
07:48And Big Ben is for real.
07:50We're going to go to the Pro Bowl 90 times.
07:54Ha.
07:56I think Ben Roethlisberger will tell you that he was able to do it because he had a really
08:00good running game and a dominating defense.
08:02I don't think Roethlisberger should have been on the list.
08:05I think that Ben charmed the voters.
08:08When you look at his numbers that year, they were fairly pedestrian.
08:11I think Matt Ryan accomplished a lot more.
08:13I think Roethlisberger came in with a better defensive team.
08:15Matt Ryan took a bad team, put him in the playoffs.
08:19He's going to throw a first professional pass.
08:20Caught.
08:21Jenkins.
08:21His first professional pass is a 62-yard strike to Michael Jenkins.
08:30Ben Roethlisberger succeeded in Pittsburgh for a number of reasons.
08:34They were a very complete team.
08:35But I don't buy for a second in the NFL that you can hide your quarterback.
08:40So he made some plays and made some throws.
08:43You cannot hide.
08:44Whenever the Steelers called on Roethlisberger to make a big play,
08:46when necessity forced him to try to reach beyond his rookie status,
08:51he always delivered.
08:52Big Ben Roethlisberger, his first rushing touchdown.
08:56Bill Cowher has always said that Ben has a knack.
09:00And that knack is something that you can't teach.
09:02It was a tremendous rookie season.
09:08Our number nine rookie only lost one game in 2004.
09:12And that was the AFC Championship.
09:20Ben Roethlisberger came in as a stone-cold rookie who had no aspirations to start this year
09:25and only lost one game the whole year.
09:27And that being a playoff game, it's hard to believe those other guys all did that much better than him.
09:33Who's above him?
09:35The number eight rookie season of all time, Odell Beckham Jr.
09:39You want to talk about great rookie years, you've got to talk about Odell Beckham.
09:43It was a great rookie season, and I'll say this,
09:45it's one of the greatest New York Giants rookie seasons ever, and that counts for something.
09:49And this is what Giants are waiting to see.
09:51The 12th overall draft pick, Odell Beckham Jr.
09:54About to take his first snap as a Giant.
10:05This young man is one of those guys that you just have to find as many different ways to get
10:11him the football.
10:12He misses the first couple games of the season, and then he still comes back
10:15and puts up one of the three or four most valuable seasons by a wide receiver that entire year.
10:24What Odell did in not a full rookie season was amazing.
10:30Odell Beckham Jr. with the grab, terrific catch.
10:33You know, we don't always see rookie receivers make that transition so quickly to the NFL.
10:39Coming back from injury and making ridiculous catches and scoring touchdowns,
10:43he's one of the best rookie seasons I've ever seen.
10:45Oh, my God!
10:51Our No. 8 player had arguably the greatest rookie season by a wide receiver in NFL history.
10:56In 2014, Beckham recorded 81 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.
11:03But it's another talent OBJ has that makes his rookie season a memorable one.
11:08You know, when I was a kid, I used to like to go to baseball games early just to catch
11:13batting practice.
11:14Well, Odell Beckham gives you that effect if you go to a Giants game to watch pregame warm-ups.
11:25It's like it's a bigger show before the game than what you actually see once they kick off.
11:31One handy catch.
11:33One handy catch.
11:35Another one handy catch.
11:37It's not like these young receivers are the first ones to ever do it, but Odell Beckham turned it into
11:43a thing.
11:44It's a treat to watch Odell Beckham play a game, and it's a treat to watch him practice.
11:58Barely fitting into a 2X NFL glove, Beckham's hands have come in handy, making arguably one of the greatest catches
12:06in NFL history.
12:09Offset high left, Banning on a play play, rolls right, throws a deep ball down the right sideline.
12:14It's a jump ball for Odell Beckham Jr.
12:17Fees the catch with one and a half, with a touchdown!
12:20Wow, what a catch by the rookie!
12:22No one could believe that that dude made that catch.
12:24I remember watching the catch against the Cowboys on Sunday night and saying, this has made his career.
12:31That made me the greatest catch I've ever seen in my life.
12:35That catch totally changed Odell Beckham's life.
12:39Forget career.
12:40Life.
12:40When you make a play like that, against a team like that, on a platform like that, it will last
12:48you forever.
12:50Just throw it up to Odell Beckham Jr.
12:53This is sick.
12:54Put this to music.
12:56From a 1 to 10, I'd say Randy Moss' first year with the Vikings, number 1.
12:59Odell Beckham, number 2 with the Giants in 2014.
13:03Odell Beckham.
13:04Yeah, he made his mark.
13:06And now he's got to live up to Odell Beckham.
13:08A lot of these guys on this list, you'll see a running back.
13:11It's probably the easiest transition position from college football into the National Football League
13:18because it's instinct.
13:19Either you can or you can't pick the hole.
13:22In fact, half of the players on our list are running backs.
13:25Some others nearly made it.
13:27In 1999, Adrian James led the...
