00:00Jeff Halfley yesterday he was asked if he is going to bench Malik Willis and here's what
00:05Jeff Halfley had to say to that. Are you giving any thought to starting time as the Jets after
00:12the bye? No. And you're thinking and saying no is what? We've played five games and Malik is our
00:22quarterback. All right. I agree with that. I'm not saying that he's been great but I'm saying
00:36this whole season is supposed to be a development season, correct? Why does that apply for everybody
00:43with the quarterback? We've had situations where young quarterbacks have taken over and
00:48been terrible their first year, right? And we've all had patience with him. Why are we
00:53not that way with Malik? Not everybody has patience with him. Not everybody, right, Tennessee. But
00:59why are we, knowing what this team is going to be, knowing what the situation and circumstances
01:06are, why are we have zero patience for Malik? It's been five games. I think people who don't
01:15have patience for him probably are like, well, he's not a rookie. He's already had his chance
01:22in Tennessee. He's supposed to come in here and be a caretaker of the team.
01:26So let me ask you a question. If you had done producing for four years, right? And this profession
01:43is a little bit different, because you're very on the radio, even though you're just
01:48I'm a prodigy.
01:57I guess that was the foolery thing.
02:04Okay, prodigy. Okay. So anyway.
02:09Don't worry, the chat's gonna burn me up. When guys get the job, right? Yeah. When you
02:16get your first gig, there's some mistakes, there's some stumbling, there's some, right?
02:21Like, it just, and it doesn't matter that, like, I can't come at you and say, you've been
02:26in radio for five years. Sure. You haven't been doing that? Oh, dude, listen, it was like
02:32the Jen Hale thing. Like, it was funny what happened to her, but like, I've been there where
02:35you've had a mess up like that. And honestly, let me tell you this. I would think it'd be
02:41worse if you did bunch Malik Willis, and I'll tell you why. If these guys came in here, okay,
02:47John Eric Sullivan and brought their guy, they brought their guy who they have more information
02:53on than anybody. And they wimped out after five games. I would ask them to hand in their
03:00key cards because they don't have the stomach for this. You can't tell the fans to have the
03:03stomach for this. You can't tell, you can't tell fans to be patient with something if
03:07you're not. Yeah, you can't do that. I'm sorry. Like, that is, and honestly, he better
03:13play all, healthful, if he's healthy, he better play all 17 games this year. Right. I better
03:18see every one of those games better be about Malik Willis because that's, that's what part
03:22of the season is supposed to be. Is he going to be good enough? I don't know. I'm not here
03:26to tell you he is good enough or not good enough, but I'll tell you one thing, I am not
03:30benching him after five games because if you do that, what was the point that that's,
03:35that's kind of my whole point with all of this is that like five games on a team that
03:45you know is rebuilding. Yeah. Right. Like this isn't like, yeah, man, it's, it's, it's brutal.
03:52It's, it's brutal. Some of the, like to even suggest like for a report even suggest
03:58that right now, I will say, and, and here's where you can start.
04:05You have to have the conversation if he continues not making good decisions, right? Like if he
04:15continues trying to throw in the middle of the field sidearm while falling down and throwing
04:21picks, then you got to have a conversation because the conversation is not about his
04:25ability. It's about his decision-making shirt. But the thing is, he's already been on the
04:30bench enough. Like none of this is going to get better without playing. Right. So you just
04:34need to know I'm not defending Malik Willis. He's stunk. He has, is he the only reason they've
04:42stunk? No, he's got a bunch of guys who don't know what they're doing out there. Pretty clearly
04:45the, the, the, the right tackle, you know, he's not in the best situation either. Bobby
04:51Sloick. It ain't like he's got Kyle Shanahan calling him plays or Matt LaFleur, you know?
04:58So I think he's got things working against him too. I'll give him some, some reprieve,
05:02but dude, the, if you, if I, if I heard from Jeff Halfley that all things are on the table
05:09after five games, I would have, I would have confidence in you. I can't have confidence
05:13in you. That means we can fire you after one year. You don't got the stomach for it. Like
05:16that means we can fire you after one year. Right. That, that, that to me is ridiculous.
05:20Like the idea that five games in that this was a guy you invested in. I would be like
05:26Troy Aikman fly down here and take their key cards. If they would have bailed on him
05:30after five games, what a waste of time because you should have just give me Quinn Ewers
05:33that. But just, but think about this. Think of some of your better quarterbacks to ever
05:41play the game. Right. I would say it's about half and half guys who were productive their
05:49rookie year. And I'm talking about the upper echelon and guys who were, we got questions,
05:56right? Peyton Manning would not survive today's football based on what he did his rookie year.
06:03Josh Allen. It wasn't the best rookie year. Drake May wasn't his rookie year. No.
06:12Yeah. I mean, like, I don't think he had one of those disasters where the team stunk,
06:16but Oh, okay. So, so there we already know. We didn't know that team was going to stink.
06:23We know this team's going to stink. We knew this team was going to stink. Right. So
06:28I think, I think people, I think the thing with Malik that I think you could say is fair
06:33is he doesn't look like he's getting better. Like we've gone. I think that he's looked a
06:38little more solid in the previous weeks, like Kansas city. Then he has these last two.
06:43And that's why, that's why I started the week off by saying he had a bad week. He had a
06:49bad
06:49week. I think we need to see how he responds to that. And that will be a bigger indication
06:59of whether he's long-term or not responding from these different issues, because guess
07:05what? Quarterbacks are going to have bad weeks. Isn't this a victimless victimless crime though?
07:09Like, okay, let's say he sucks. Then they have a great pick. Like, I don't mean to be that
07:16guy, but that's kind of the point is you knew this was going to be a bad season. If he's
07:22the,
07:22okay, you gave, Oh, we didn't have any cat. We gave them this money for what? What are we
07:27going to spend it on for this roster where, where, where I got the special teams. It looks
07:33like 11 blind mice out there covering kickoffs. I have never. And, and I don't know if you say
07:41it's coaching because if you think of special teams coaches, they're like the strength and
07:48conditioning coach, the old Miami hurricane strength and conditioning coach. They're very
07:53intense. They're very, it's all energy. And that's what they, they, they strive on energy,
08:00energy, energy, energy. Um, everybody had to be a part of special teams and it was a way in coaches
08:08made a point of this. Listen, if you're not playing, you better show me you can play special
08:15teams. And that gives you a shot. If you can't play special teams and you're in second or third
08:22string at a position, it's going to be hard for us to keep you. So everybody will bust their ass
08:27to
08:28play special teams because it was a way to kind of still be on the team. Cause you know,
08:34during the course of the season, people are going to get banged up and you're going to get your
08:37opportunity. I can't for the life of me figure out. And, and part of the problem is, is everybody's
08:45so young, right? So it's different when you have a one or two year NFL vet, who's been on practice
08:53the squad, finally getting on the field and playing special teams versus a guy that comes
08:58out of college. That's never played special teams. Cause he was a star at some little school
09:03he went to. Sure. So there's that. But also the problem has been like, even the vets who
09:08are, you know, I know we're talking about coverage, but like even the vets who are supposed to like
09:11Patterson's played, Pinion's played, Malik Washington has done reception. These guys have
09:16been critical special teams errors too. It's been bad. But now that they're playing,
09:19like I would say with Malik, now he's playing more offense. You know what I mean? It's, it's,
09:25it's a, it's a, there's so many different angles, right? As to why this is what it is.
09:36But let's start this way, this way. Very rarely do you have a team where the players are so young
09:45and so inexperienced that they don't know about the other ways to contribute on the football team.
09:52A lot of them just don't because wherever they were, they were stars. Like you very rarely going
09:58to have a college, the Rudy, the guy who plays all the special teams. And then he goes to the
10:04NFL,
10:04does the same thing there. No, it's usually a guy who started at linebacker, but at a smaller
10:11university that fought like hell and was tough and whatever you say, Oh, we need that on this
10:16team. We don't have a spot for special teams. That's how that works.
10:20Shmethen says Malik was a waste of money. They should have eaten to his full cap this season.
10:25You still know. Um, okay. Save the caps. 300 million. Was it two A300 somewhere in there? All right.
10:40Eating Tua's full salary. Oh, you say it should have kept Tua? No, I think he's just saying like
10:46you should have just eaten the dead cap this year, like taking it on the chin this year.
10:49You have to spend the money anyway. You have to spend 300 million. So the dead cap counts
10:53against the 300 million. But say if you got only a hundred million dollar roster, you still got
10:58to spend 50 million. So at the end of the year, it's all going to add up to 300 million.
11:04Right. If that's what the cap is, if the argument is, could Quinn yours go out there and have you
11:08own five right now? Yeah, he definitely could have like the dolphins are literally and the
11:12worst position they could be a flyer for 20 million. That's not in, in, from quarterback
11:18perspective. That's not. Yes. But like one, it's like, but it's not supposed to be a flyer
11:26when you knew the guy like that, that to me is a fair criticism. You knew the guy, regardless
11:31of whether you knew him or not, you still have no idea how he's going to handle being
11:35a quarterback for the whole year. Right. Being the backup is a lot different than being the
11:42starter. You have nothing to lose as the backup. Cause at the end of the day, you're just going
11:46to go back and get the clipboard. Look, they've already shown. It seems to me. And, and the
11:51numbers are bearing this out. Like they have nailed a lot of these picks. Like they didn't now
11:56they haven't, you know, maybe taken the most premium positions. They didn't take a pass
12:02rusher. They didn't take a wide receiver, you know, but all these guys with Proctor and
12:08Johnson and Jacob Rodriguez leading the league in tackles, like, okay, it looks like he nailed
12:12all that. Um, this was kind of his big ticket. Like, even if it's not quarterback, big ticket,
12:18it still was their big ticket item. Cause they don't have any money. Right. But, but again,
12:22if let's think of it this way, if I gave you and you knew you had 20 to 25 million
12:32to spend on a player with all these young players and draft picks and you going young
12:38and whatever, there's really no other position on the field that you could have more of an
12:47impact other than taking a chance with a quarterback. You understand what I'm saying?
12:52Especially one they're familiar with. You go and spend that money on what, but an offensive
12:58lineman or, or whatever. I think the thing is, the thing is, is like with, with Malik. And
13:04again, I am not for benching Malik Willis. If they did that, I would, I think I would be rats
13:08off a ship on them already on the front office. Cause that's a coward. That's a coward's way
13:11out. But I think the idea is you bring him in. He's supposed to be your Sam Darnold. He's
13:18supposed to be your next retread that you've polished up a little bit. And he still looks
13:23like he got, he's got a long way to go. Not that he doesn't pop. Like he's got some pop
13:27plays, but he doesn't, he doesn't look like he can, he can take care of a drive. He can,
13:32he can take care of the football, but there's still a lot of growing that has to happen.
13:35That's part of having this job on a daily basis is that, you know, you can't be the one
13:41to get flustered. You can't be the one to force things. You can't be, you have to be
13:46patient. Right. And, and I think that's what they're, they're trying to get to him. Like
13:51it's hard going on that field and saying, and, and not wanting to make an impact every
13:57time you go out there, but you can't do that. You don't have the same capabilities at that
14:02position because sometimes trying to make something happen ends up being a pick or a turnover or
14:08a fumble or a strip sack. So you have to also be patient with the process. Yeah. If you're
14:16trying, if you're trying, no, no, no, no, no. What do you mean? I wasn't going to say anything.
14:23Jennifer buckle up. What do you mean? I wasn't going to say anything cute.
14:28No way to buckle up. I wasn't going to say anything cute.
14:30Stop lying. What do you mean? Seatbelts on. Got that harness. Go. I'm ready. If you try
14:38hard, too hard to make things happen, they won't be clapping. Okay. Removing myself. See,
14:44I told you. I know. That's so bad. That's terrible. Minus minus one. That's so bad.
14:58For show poniness. You knew it was going to be bad, too. You knew it. You ruined my flow.
15:02I didn't ruin your flow. It would have been better in the moment. You had no flow. You,
15:05you, you know, you know, respect. I patted the ball. You could see that I was going to throw
15:09it. Yeah, that's why. Like him, them patting the ball had no reason why to do with him throwing
15:15it to the other damn team.
