Set in Djibouti with the French Foreign Legion. Galoup, a rigid, obsessive sergeant, narrates his recollection of events. He resents the young, charismatic recruit Sentain, whose natural grace and popularity threaten Galoup’s status and his homoerotic fixation on him. Galoup engineers a dangerous desert punishment that strands Sentain, leading to Sentain’s disappearance and Galoup’s own disgrace and court-martial. The film ends with Galoup’s ambiguous return to Marseille and the iconic solo dance sequence.
