Shy Belgian manicurist Carol lives in a London flat with her older sister Helen. She’s repulsed by men—especially by Helen’s married lover Michael, whose razor and toothbrush in the bathroom make her vomit. When Helen and Michael leave for a holiday, Carol is left alone. Her fragile grip on reality collapses: she leaves a rabbit to rot in the kitchen, hallucinates a man raping her, hears footsteps, sees cracks split the walls and hands reach out of them. Suitor Colin breaks in to declare his love—Carol bludgeons him with a candlestick and hides his body in the bathtub. Later the landlord forces his way in and tries to assault her; she hacks him with a straight razor. When Helen and Michael return, they find the apartment in squalor, Colin’s corpse in the bath, and Carol catatonic under the bed. The final image—a family photo—hints at a childhood trauma as the source of her breakdown.
