Scandal / Sukyandaru (1950) — Akira Kurosawa’s courtroom-tabloid drama (screenplay Kurosawa & Ryūzō Kikushima; cinematography Toshio Ubukata; music Fumio Hayasaka) . In the snowy mountains, painter Ichirō Aoye (Toshirō Mifune) gives singer Miyako Saijo (Yoshiko Yamaguchi) a lift; paparazzi snap them on a balcony and the sleazy magazine Amour fabricates an affair . Ichirō sues for libel and is approached by down-and-out lawyer Hiruta (Takashi Shimura), who secretly takes a bribe from Amour to throw the case because his daughter Masako (Yōko Katsuragi) needs treatment for tuberculosis . Moved by Ichirō and Miyako’s kindness to Masako—and her disgust at his conduct—Hiruta confesses in court and wins the case .
