The Most Beautiful / Ichiban utsukushiku (1944) — Akira Kurosawa’s wartime semi-documentary (screenplay Kurosawa; cinematography Jōji Ohara; music Seiichi Suzuki) . At the Nippon Kōgaku precision-optics plant in Hiratsuka, dormitory leader Tsuru Watanabe (Yōko Yaguchi) rallies a team of young women volunteers who feel slighted by a smaller production target than the men’s; they persuade management to raise their quota and push themselves to exhaustion calibrating lenses for the war effort . Illness, a broken leg, and fatigue take their toll; Tsuru obsessively hunts a missing lens (the “for want of a nail” motif) and even refuses leave when her mother dies . The film was shot on location with the cast living in the factory dorms to learn the work .
