The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail / Tora no o wo fumu otokotachi (1945) — Akira Kurosawa’s compact jidaigeki (screenplay Kurosawa from the Kabuki Kanjinchō and Noh Ataka; cinematography Takeo Itō; music Tadashi Hattori) . Late 12th century: Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Hanshirō Iwai) and six retainers, led by Benkei (Denjirō Ōkōchi), disguise themselves as yamabushi monks to slip past an Ataka checkpoint held by Togashi (Susumu Fujita) . When questioned, Benkei improvises—producing a blank scroll as the “kanjinchō” (subscription list) and reading it aloud—and even beats the disguised Yoshitsune to sell the ruse; impressed by this loyalty, Togashi lets them through .
