00:00One of the NFL stories to keep tabs on is the replacement refs.
00:09And, you know, it's an interesting thing because apparently
00:17there are a lot of different avenues that which people
00:20could have takes on this.
00:22I saw some folks on this network.
00:27What do these refs even want?
00:30Do it for the love of the game, which is one of the silliest things
00:34close personal friend Donnie Ridesides ever said.
00:37Though, if I can think back to when, you know,
00:41we used to run a three-man weave on this show,
00:43that sounds right up Joe's alley.
00:45Who do these refs think they are?
00:47Get out there, throw a flag, don't throw a flag.
00:51What do you need the money for?
00:53Joe, are you interested in the replacement refs
00:56and what might be done or not done here?
00:58Yeah, they can't be any worse than the regular refs
01:01that we have 17 Sundays every week.
01:05I mean, give me a break.
01:06First of all, Kevin, okay, what you don't recognize,
01:09and I know you do, is that these refs are part-timers.
01:12They already get big salaries.
01:14They're lawyers, CFOs.
01:16They get big salaries already, and this is a part-time gig, okay?
01:20And then, you know, they pull out calls that they haven't made all game long
01:25in the waning minutes that determine an outcome.
01:28So if you want to get a replacement refs that are hungry,
01:32that want to make a statement, I'll sign up for that any day of the week, okay?
01:38All right?
01:40Yeah, that's right.
01:42Give me the hungry guy.
01:44Give me the guy that's playing high school and, you know,
01:47doing a group of five in New Jersey, big parochial game.
01:51Give me that guy that wants to step on the field each and every Sunday
01:55in a primetime matchup that maybe will lead the flag
01:59because he understands football and some of these garbage refs
02:03that we have each week.
02:05Yeah.
02:08Man, I didn't think, again, close personal friend of the show,
02:12Donnie Rightside's take of what do these refs even want,
02:16do it for the love of the game, would be topped,
02:18and you just blew it out of the water.
02:20These refs don't love the game, and you want a hungry dog
02:24who's dying to make a name for himself at the top level here,
02:29which sounds like a legitimate nightmare.
02:31Sounds like an absolute nightmare.
02:32Sounds like, you know, guys will be excited to get on TV.
02:37And here's my worry, okay?
02:41So right now, everyone's perception of NFL refs is very, very low.
02:47But the idea is we have the best guys doing it.
02:50That's at least the idea.
02:52If you bring in replacement refs, I think the best case scenario
02:59is they do the same exact job as the current refs.
03:03They're not going to be better.
03:05That's not – people aren't going to watch a game and be like,
03:08I got to tell you, this crew, on it, on it, love their holding calls,
03:14love the lack of DP.
03:16It's not going to happen.
03:16And what's going to happen for the gamblers, Joe, is when they lose bets,
03:22now, replacement refs, what – the idea around officials is you don't want them
03:28to be a storyline.
03:29If we go into games knowing, hey, these aren't the real refs,
03:34it's going to be bad for the season.
03:36It just is.
03:36It's possible, Kevin, but let me say this, okay?
03:41The reason why you claim they're the best refs isn't because of the consistency
03:47of the calls, Kevin.
03:48The reason why they're the best refs is because they understand the handbook, okay,
03:54better and rulebook better than anybody.
03:57And that's a problem, okay?
03:58Because if you're pulling calls in Section 151, page 95 of 110 pages of the rulebook,
04:08which have absolutely no bearing of the game, but you want to showcase your knowledge
04:14of the rulebook, that's a complete joke.
04:17And that's what these refs do.
04:19How many times do we see a call come out of nowhere that affects the outcome
04:25of a particular ball game, and it wasn't called throughout the regular season once?
04:30What made the ref pull that out at that particular time just to showcase his knowledge
04:36of the rulebook?
04:38I don't think that really happens.
04:39Give me the high school refs that you – no?
04:42You want me to think you want me?
04:44Yeah.
04:45I think there's refs that wait until they can pull something out as opposed to just
04:51letting the game play out.
04:53And if you're not going to – if you're going to allow them to play, you allow them
04:57to play.
04:58That's it.
04:58You don't – you want to eat the whistle, you eat the whistle for 60 minutes.
