00:07Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're taking a look at 20 times other games referenced
00:13Pokemon, whether it be through direct quotes, parodies, subtle color palettes, or other
00:19means. Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to
00:30MojoPlays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:35Rune Factory 4 The Rune Factory games hold a litany of different
00:46activities for players to partake in. However, those who spent enough time with
00:50Chlorica in RF4 might have stumbled upon this rather explicit nod to Pokemon.
00:56When talking about fishing, Chlorica shows a slight concern she has about fishing,
01:00saying, quote,
01:01"...fishing can be quite dangerous. Sometimes it's less tentacool and more tentacruel."
01:07End quote. Additionally, Dulce will make references by uttering,
01:12"...I choose you," commanding a thunderbolt attack, and talking a bit about different
01:16types of "...effectiveness," as he puts it. Really, a lot of love for the Pocket Monster
01:21franchise just in this single Rune Factory game.
01:24Digimon Story, Cyber Sleuth It's kind of odd that the IP that tried to
01:29compete with Pokemon is now paying respects to it in some way. Cyber Sleuth has a rather
01:33funny and super specific reference to Pokemon in its fourth chapter. In this portion of the game,
01:39Akami asks you to investigate an Eater, a creature that consumes data.
01:45Arata will ask Suedo if he's got any secret weapons to help them. Those secret weapons being,
01:51maybe, a camera watch that can detect hidden objects, or a ball that captured creatures can be
01:57stuffed into. Careful Digimon, having a spherical object that captures monsters might land you into
02:02legal trouble. Just look at Pal World. Them's Fightin' Herds
02:11In case you haven't played this fighting game before, you absolutely should. Them's Fightin' Herds
02:16boasts an excellent meter system that makes fights frenetic and encourages experimenting for crazy
02:22combos. As for the Pokemon references, you'll find them when choosing a color palette for some
02:27characters. Some of these color palettes reference pocket monsters such as Ponyta, Miltank, Go-Goat,
02:34Fennekin, and a handful of others. Them's Fightin' Herds is not the only fighter to pay respects in
02:39this fashion though, but we'll get to that other one later. Persona 5 Strikers
02:50The Persona games have often been cheeky with their references to video games, as well as movies
02:55and TV shows. Persona 5 Strikers, on the other hand, goes kinda nuts with the references, the most
03:02notable ones appearing when you reach Sendai Jail. In Sendai Jail, you will have to fight a group of
03:07Ango Natsume's publishers known as The Fearsome Four, who are quite literally named The Elite Four
03:14in the Japanese version of the game. As for the fraudulent writer himself, Natsume will transform
03:20into a dragon before his boss fight, and his strengths and weaknesses are about the exact
03:25same ones you'd expect from Pokemon's Dragonite. Of course, there are plenty of other works Natsume
03:32has likely ripped off between what you can find in the prison and some of the things he sends.
03:36Game Over, Mr. Overlord!
03:39Judgment and Lost Judgment
03:47Sega has shown quite a bit of love towards Pokemon, as we'll see now,
03:51and with one other entry later on. Judgment, however, is less of a direct reference and more of a profane
03:58parody. One of the criminals you'll come across is named, at least in territories outside Japan,
04:04Ash Ketchum, a serial groper who goes around grabbing women's butts. The parodied Ash Ketchum
04:12name is not the only part about this character that pokes fun at Pokemon a bit. Care to guess
04:16what criminal organization he's a part of? That's right, it's called the Filthy Four.
04:22Little Inferno. There isn't a lot of room for references and easter eggs for a physics sandbox
04:28game that's all about burning objects. Although, the flavor text can hide some neat jokes and the
04:33like. Take the spider, for instance. If you read its description in one of the catalogs, it reads,
04:39a giant spider appears. You attempt to flee. Giant spider attacks for massive damage.
04:45This is similar to how a battle begins in Pokemon if you attempt to run away on the first turn,
04:50but it is worth mentioning that this could also double as a Dragon Quest tribute. Take it as you'd like.
05:03Payday 2. During its post-launch support, Payday 2 added a new playable character in 2018,
05:09named Joy. No, she is not a direct reference to Nurse Joy from the Pokemon anime, though she does
05:14spit out quotes like it's going out of style. In one of her calls talking to Control, Joy assures
05:20that the situation is completely fine and that she was just looking for Pokemon before asking,
05:25you want to trade? That's not the only explicit Pokemon reference in the game, though. Something
05:30about the Electro-Rodent mask looks awfully familiar, don't you think?
05:34Super Mario Galaxy. Super Mario Galaxy does house some planets and locations that resemble
05:41familiar objects, mostly ones you have seen in other Mario games. And that's kind of what makes
05:46Boyo-based Galaxy a bit bizarre because one planet is from a completely different franchise. One of the
05:53areas you'll run around on looks exactly like a Pokeball. To this day, Nintendo has yet to provide
05:59some clarity as to why this was here. Skullgirls.
06:08Much like them's fightin' herds, Skullgirls boasts a ton of different color palettes for each of its
06:14fighters, many of which reference different games, movies, TV shows, and anime that some of the developers
06:20are fans of. You'll see color schemes based on Shantae, Dick Tracy, Marvel Super Heroes, and of
06:26course, Pokemon. For example, Valentine's 28th palette makes her resemble Nurse Joy from the anime,
06:33while Beowulf's 26th palette makes him look a bit like Incineroar. Think you can spot any other
06:39notable palette swaps? Genshin Impact. From the design in their games to the writing,
06:50play any game from Hoyoverse and you'll immediately see that this team of developers
06:54truly are fans of different games. As expected, you're likely to find a Pokemon reference here
07:00and there in their titles. Genshin Impact, for starters, hides a clever reference in the travel
07:05note called Primal Fire. In it, the writer notes how different their companions' colors are,
07:11remarking, quote, but why green, brown, and purple? Shouldn't the first companions we meet be red,
07:17green, and blue? Or yellow? End quote. Well, if you were expecting Charmander, Bulbasaur,
07:23Squirtle, or maybe Pikachu to appear in Genshin Impact, that is likely never going to happen.
07:27Honkai Star Rail. Yes, Genshin Impact is not the only Hoyoverse game filled with video game
07:33references. Honkai Star Rail contains a couple of Pokemon nods, one being pretty explicit and
07:40another being a bit more subtle. One type of vagrant you'll encounter during the Gladiator questline
07:45is named Ash the Mechanic, and he comes with an Automaton Beetle companion named Beatkachu.
07:51Meanwhile, in the achievements, you may notice one achievement is called Perish Song and requires you
07:57to KO all enemies in a fight at the same time. This requirement is basically the same outcome you get
08:03a few turns after using Perish Song in the Pokemon games.
08:13Harvest Moon 64. To see this one for yourself, you will have to fulfill certain conditions that
08:19might prove to be tricky. Harvest Moon 64 hides a Pokemon Easter Egg behind the potential marriage
08:26between two specific characters, Kai and Karen. First off, you'll have to achieve a certain affection
08:32level with Karen in a short period of time. Fail to do this, and she disappears from your playthrough
08:38forever. But if you manage to keep her around long enough and let her fall in love with Kai,
08:43the two will have a kid, and the kid will, oddly enough, sport ears closely resembling Pikachus.
08:50A lot of effort required just to see false rodent ears.
08:54Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. The GTA games can sometimes hide secrets that allude to various
09:00video game franchises. Shockingly, this little piece of art in San Andreas somehow snuck past Nintendo,
09:07Game Freak, and the Pokemon Company. Head into Los Santos and look for the Yaguetos Regalos Toy Store.
09:14You'll notice that the store's signage sports characters that look way,
09:18way, way, way too similar to Ash Ketchum, Squirtle, and Pikachu. And is that Mickey and Minnie Mouse?
09:27How did Disney not make a stink about this? Oh, and don't bother looking for this vector art in the
09:32definitive version. It was removed entirely for that version of San Andreas. So there's no point in looking.
09:38Yakuza Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth.
09:50Going back into Sega territory, this may have been on some of your minds the second you saw this video
09:56upload. Yes, both Yakuza Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth have entire side modes
10:02dedicated to Pokemon as a parody. Ichiban must travel the area to fight and, quote unquote,
10:07capture various criminals dubbed Sujiman. But unlike the franchise built on pocket monsters,
10:14you'll be sending out three Sujimans at a time to take on your opponent's own Sujiman.
10:20Capture as many as you can to bring down every challenger you come across
10:23and become the very best like no one ever was. Enter the Gungeon.
10:34You will find a litany of different guns to use in Enter the Gungeon, some of which serve as homages
10:39to various other video games. Before you ask, no, there are no guns based on Pokemon,
10:46as hilarious as that would be. But you're not going to go around shooting Pokeballs at people. Instead,
10:50you can find different items that grant passive traits such as the Macho Brace, the Life Orb,
10:57and the Helix Bullets. All items that can be obtained across different Pokemon games.
11:02But will these be enough for you to finally obtain the gun that can kill the pass?
11:14The Elder Scrolls III, Morrowind. There are an unnatural number of Pokemon references loaded into
11:22Morrowind. Perhaps we're exaggerating, but there are two locations named after two different pocket
11:27monsters. Merowek's Spine is a sub-area of the Illunabi dungeon, while Weeping Bell Hall can be
11:34found in Arkenthad. But the references don't stop there. You can come across the dead body of a
11:40Peek Achoo, and on his person is a note containing his last words. Turns out, Peek Achoo has died to
11:48poison. Sounds about right. Danganronpa series. There are a couple of ways Danganronpa has mentioned
11:55Pokemon, both of them requiring you to go out of your way to spot them. Danganronpa II Goodbye Despair
12:01has an achievement called Gotta Raise Em All that requires players to raise every type of virtual
12:06pet possible. As for Danganronpa V3 Killing Harmony, you'll have to start Angie's Love Across the
12:12Universe event, and she'll greet Shuichi with an Alola. Either she doesn't know how to say Aloha,
12:18or she's been playing too much of Pokemon Sun and Moon.
12:29Destiny 2. Destiny and Pokemon are two IPs we would never imagine would ever recognize each other
12:36under any capacity. And yet, here we are. Indeed, Destiny 2 pays respects to Pokemon,
12:42but not in the ways that you would probably expect. No, there is an emote called Investigative Dance,
12:49which is a tribute to the same dance featured in the 2019 Detective Pikachu movie. A surprising
12:55inclusion, considering a classic Team Rocket style pose would have sufficed. Way to go for a deeper cut,
13:01guys.
13:06The Binding of Isaac, Rebirth. Much like Enter the Gungeon,
13:10you'll come across many different items to help you in the Binding of Isaac. The Rebirth rendition
13:15specifically has four items that call back to classic Pokemon items. PokeGo, Friendly Ball,
13:22TM Trainer, and the Mysterious Missing No. Obviously, not all of these look exactly like the official
13:28versions, but they look similar enough to give the idea of what they really are.
13:37Animal Crossing
13:45Now, unfortunately, there are no official Pokemon items to get for your house or village. There aren't
13:51even any cosmetic items to dress your village up like a Pokemon trainer. The one item Animal Crossing has
13:57ever featured that's related to the RPG series is via a generalized icon. In the first Animal Crossing
14:05video game, Tom Nook may hand you a toy Pikachu to give to other villagers as a favor. Besides this,
14:12the closest we ever got to Animal Crossing featuring actual Pokemon items was during the days of the GBA
14:18E-Reader. The Animal Crossing E-Design cards featured a card that gave players a unique Pokeball-patterned
14:26wallpaper. And that's it! We've gotten jacks since. But tell us, did you spot any of these for yourself
