00:19mojo and don't have a great grasp on the English language and focus instead on the scariest moment

00:43before you even settle into the spencer mansion in resident evil the game has set the tone fog
00:48blood mutated dogs the usual once inside though there's a deceptive calm sure zombies shuffle
00:54around corners but the mansion itself starts to feel completely manageable no surprises you solve
01:00a puzzle you unlock a door you stab a zombie regular Tuesday then comes the hallway brightly lit
01:05lined with windows fairly innocuous nothing out of the oil holy jesus without warning glass explodes
01:11inward and undead dogs crash through making you jump higher than a young australian boy has jumped

01:28both the original and the remake of resident evil 2 are incredibly scary both in their own ways and
01:33with their own moments but this very particular moment stands out for me because not only is it a nice
01:39subtle throwback to our previous entry but it hits hard in both the 2019 version and the original 1998
01:45version of re2 up until this moment the game has trained you to expect build-up so when you wander
01:50into
01:50an interrogation room with its one-way mirror and sterile lighting it feels routine you move to the
01:56far end with your inventory management brain fully engaged then the mirror borderline explodes and a liquor
02:02crashes through no warning no cinematic flourish just chaos and it works perfectly because the flow of the
02:07game sets you up to completely have your guard down that's game development poetry

02:31trying to pick a single scariest nemesis moment in resident evil 3 is pointless because it's nemesis and
02:37the real terror is that he never really leaves but i've got a job to do so i'm focusing on

02:41right outside the raccoon city police department brad's death brad's death in resident evil 3 is
02:47terrifying because it rips away the illusion of safety instantly you run into him expecting a
02:52familiar ally a returning face from the first game maybe even a source of comfort in the chaos of
02:57raccoon city instead nemesis casually lifts him and impales him without hesitation it's fast brutal and
03:03completely unfair there's no boss arena build-up no dramatic warning just raw dominance in one scene the game
03:10shows you exactly what kind of monster you're dealing with if brad can't survive what chance do i have

03:29we're jumping to the back end of this game for a truly goosebump inducing moment in resident evil code
03:34veronica you find yourself descending further into the antarctic base already uneasy from the tone
03:40of this whole section then the game pulls the curtain back on nosferatu it isn't introduced like
03:45a typical boss there's no immediate arena showdown instead you're shown something restrained screaming
03:50hidden like a total mistake that reveal lands because it feels aggressively unsettling the series
03:57often primes you for combat but here it leads with spectacle and horror

04:16i promise myself not to talk about the remake but when i think of scary moments in the series
04:21this always pops into my head so i'm going to allow the resident evil 1 remake a spot on this

04:26in the remake of resident evil the scariest lesson comes after you think you know everything you drop
04:31a zombie clean headshot corridor secured bing bang boom you move on feeling efficient maybe even a
04:37little smug i know this game i know my then later in a hallway you mentally checked off a safe

04:43corpse gets back up only now it's faster redder twitchier and aggressively wrong your first crimson
04:49head isn't just a jump scare it's a rules rewrite suddenly every fallen enemy becomes a liability
04:54do you burn the body and spend precious fuel or risk it turning into something worse
05:07leech man stands resident evil zero you expect me to trust you a wanted felon i don't need your help
05:14i can handle this on my own and don't call me little girl trains are already tense places and this

05:20before you chuck in the zombie infested version you see in resident evil zero this train is cramped
05:25and packed with narrow corridors and tight rooms that turn every encounter into a choke point you're
05:30also juggling two characters two inventories and constant backtracking which keeps your brain busy with
05:36train logistics train logistics then the leech man appears at first glance it's almost like a regular human
05:42silhouette stumbling towards you for half a second your brain files it under zombie then the illusion breaks
05:48the body shifts strangely its posture unnatural and you realize the person is actually a colony of
05:54writhing parasites pretending to be human that realization hits harder than a normal jump scare
05:59there are few escape routes and every door forces you to commit to a direction

06:20after your little incident i assumed that you went and hit under a rock like the little child that you
06:27are
06:28outbreak's scariest moment isn't really a single moment it's a single moment that gets repeated
06:32constantly it's the instant you realize the game has introduced a quiet death clock infection
06:38you get hit you keep moving and then you notice that this isn't like other re games where healing
06:43means safety you are deteriorating and if your team doesn't coordinate you become a problem for
06:48everyone else this turns survival horror into social horror you're not afraid of the monsters
06:53you're afraid of being the weak link inventory is limited curses are contested and the environment
06:57feels hostile because it is now an enemy that never stops walking towards you offline this is failure
07:03online this risks turning you into an enemy
07:12first regenerator encounter resident evil 4
07:20by the time you reach the later chapters of resident evil 4 the game has already convinced you
07:24that you're unstoppable leon's arsenal is stacked enemies drop quickly and the action heavy pace
07:29makes you feel like the hunter rather than the hunted possibly for the first time in the series
07:34then the regenerator shows up and casually shreds that illusion the first encounter is almost
07:40mundane you wander into a lab notice a strange alien looking body lying on a table and keep exploring
07:45nothing jumps out no dramatic music cue but eventually you find a memo explaining that the creature
07:51can regenerate damaged tissue and limbs that's unsettling that's almost a warning then you hear the
07:57crash suddenly the thing is up wobbling towards you with those eerie labored breaths you unload bullets
08:03into it and nothing works limbs burst apart only to grow back seconds later the terror isn't just
08:08the monster itself it's the confusion of the monster itself it's the confusion of that moment
08:21crocodiles resident evil 5
08:31resident evil 5 leans heavily into action explosions and co-op firefights which means genuine scares are a
08:38little harder to come by than in earlier entries but to match the tone of this new setting the biggest
08:42scare doesn't come from zombies or parasites it's crocodiles they only appear in one swampy stretch of
08:48the game but that single encounter is enough to catch plenty of players off guard the area looks
08:52harmless at first it's just high water and some quiet exploration the game doesn't really telegraph
08:57the danger either you step forward thinking it's another routine path and suddenly a crocodile erupts
09:03from the water and snaps you in half before you even process what happened for many players that's
09:08their first death in the game for me not so much i didn't even get scared i just said checks
09:13out

09:31for a game often criticized for abandoning horror in favor of explosions and ran house kicks resident evil 6
09:37does occasionally remember what franchise it belongs to though it is rare i grant you one of the moments
09:43when it tries to be scary happens during leon's campaign in the subway tunnels unlike most of the
09:48game you can't sprint through this section blasting everything in sight the environment is dark claustrophobic
09:53and lit only by leon's flashlight which immediately slows the pace and forces you to creep forward
09:58instead of charging ahead like an action hero then the game twists the knife you can barely see the
10:03enemy's panic starts setting in as shadows close in from every direction thankfully you're saved by a
10:08train rectifying your experience from resident evil zero mayday mayday resident evil revelations
10:22who'd have thought the scariest thing in this game would be a voice in resident evil revelations that
10:28voice says a single chilling word mayday long before players actually see the creature responsible
10:33they hear the garbled distress call echoing through the abandoned ship at first it sounds
10:38like a survivor begging for help repeating the same desperate signal over and over again
10:43but something about it feels wrong the delivery is unnatural like a broken record stuck in a loop
10:49that uneasy feeling builds as you follow the sound to the ship's narrow corridors each step pulling you
10:54closer to the source when the creature finally appears the realization hits instantly the distress call
11:00wasn't a cry for help it was bait
11:09invisible glass detection panic resident evil revelations 2
11:15my vision's getting
11:23resident evil revelations 2 delivers one of its most effective scares through mechanics the moment comes
11:29when you're controlling natalia a child who can sense enemies but can barely defend herself normally
11:35that ability is helpful then the glass appears the glass is invisible which immediately turns the encounter
11:41into chaos natalia can see the creature's presence through a hostile glow but barry the character
11:46actually carrying the weapons can't see it at all suddenly the entire scene becomes frantic teamwork
11:52natalia must point and warn barry where the threat is coming from or the player scrambles to aim at
11:56something that technically isn't there one wrong guess when the glass can kill you instantly i'm
12:01currently playing this through with my girlfriend and i gotta be honest we've never screamed so loud in our lives
12:09first mia encounter resident evil 7 biohazard
12:14mia oh thank god i found you it's me it's ethan ethan ethan
12:20resident evil 7 changed the formula bringing the series back to pure horror and it wastes no time
12:26proving that shift early on you finally find mia the wife you've been searching for and for a brief
12:31second it feels like relief is coming but the game has just started this can't go well she snaps no
12:36dramatic transformation sequence no slow build one moment she's fragile and confused and the next she's
12:42violently attacking you the real nightmare though is the staircase scene watching mia twist and crawl
12:48unnaturally up the stairs jerking toward you like something wearing a human body incorrectly
12:52is deeply unsettling it's not just a jump scare it's a warning about what the rest of the adventure is
12:58gonna look like
13:06crawling fetus resident evil village
13:16resident evil village shifts the series once again giving ethan a lot more guff and pushing combat
13:21more aggressively proving this from the beginning of the game in what is basically an homage to re4's
13:27opening village segment and just when you start thinking the game isn't that scary i wish they'd
13:31pull the combat back a bit and bring back horror the game introduces the beniviento house when you
13:36first enter something immediately feels wrong it's silence and up until this point the game has been
13:41pretty loud there are no enemies just rows of unsettling dolls staring blankly at you while you
13:47wander through dimly lit hallways solving puzzles the tension slowly builds as you descend into the basement
13:52where you solve a bunch of puzzles without your weapons to help you then you hear it the cry of
13:58a baby
13:59echoing through the darkness the nightmare reveals itself a gigantic grotesque infant crawling towards
14:05you it's distorted voice crying dada while its enormous mouth gapes open you are completely weaponless
14:11and helpless and running from this thing and hearing its screams causes goosebumps for every player who experiences it
14:32the orphanage resident evil requiem we need to do something like all security but nobody answered they are out of
14:37control
14:40i knew i was gonna make this list while i was playing through this game for the first time and
14:44there were
14:44plenty of spooky moments to choose from the hag chasing you through the care center the giant spider
14:49that comes for you in raccoon city but there was only one moment where i immediately said well that's
14:54going on the list during the only section in the game where you aren't playing as either of our
14:58protagonists you are thrust back into the familiar horrifying location from resident evil 2 the orphanage
15:04you wake to find that nobody else is in their beds and after looking for everyone else you discover
15:09the children carbon copied bald red-eyed super children who have one goal kill everyone you
15:16included the horror that they create in this section from tapping windows snapping adults necks and trying
15:22to find you is unmatched and nothing will ever compare to the jump i did when one of them decided
