00:08We're all for suspension of belief, but this is a little ridiculous.
00:12Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're looking at the biggest plot holes and lore inconsistencies
00:18found within the Resident Evil series.
00:26But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long.
00:29So, be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:35Sturdy Heroes
00:42First up, something that we can't realistically fault only Resident Evil for, as there are
00:48plenty of zombie-related video games that do the same thing.
00:51That being said, it's still guilty of it.
00:54We watch plenty of NPCs get turned into flesh-eating monsters whenever they themselves are bitten
00:59but, as for us, just heal up with some first-aid spray or an herb and you're good to go.
01:05From Jill to Chris to Leon, we've all been chewed on by a zombie while in control and
01:11walked away without fear of ever actually turning into the undead.
01:15We suppose none of the viruses are 100% contagious, but it's curious that we always happen to
01:21be immune while everyone else is not.
01:28Too much mass
01:39We've seen it time and time again.
01:42Someone is infected by a virus, mutating into this hulking monstrosity with extra limbs,
01:48and dwarfing you in size.
01:50It makes sense from a gameplay standpoint.
01:52It often serves as an intimidating final encounter, and it looks terrifying to boot.
01:57But when we think about it, the immense size for some of these encounters is questionable.
02:10Where does all this body mass come from?
02:13Because people like William Birkin aren't exactly imposing before they mutate.
02:18And mutation doesn't necessarily mean the body should grow to such an extent.
02:22Admittedly, it can be waved away by fictional science as a means to an end, but it still doesn't
02:28make much sense.
02:48Now, let's get into some specifics.
02:51The problems with Resident Evil 6 have been talked about to death, but the fact remains
02:56its story is full of plot holes.
02:58For starters, Carla Radamez as a fake version of Ada Wong.
03:02As we come to learn, she was a virologist responsible for the C-virus, a project started by the foundation
03:09of Derek Simmons.
03:10It was meant to be a commercially viable bioweapon, but it could also theoretically be used to create
03:16a clone of someone by splicing it with their DNA and injecting it into a host.
03:21Simmons, obsessively in love with Agent Ada Wong, experimented on and mutated over 12,000 people
03:29in an attempt to create a clone.
03:31And it only worked on Carla, the person who just so happened to be the scientist behind
03:36the virus.
03:37We know Resident Evil has some wild plotlines, but that is absolutely batshit.
03:44It was only a way to keep Ada in the shady backstabber role, but it's way too convoluted
03:49to make any actual sense.
03:51Unreal!
03:53I don't need help from anyone!
03:57Rebecca's Characterization Resident Evil Zero
04:08Resident Evil Zero is a prequel to the original game.
04:11It tells the story of Rebecca Chambers before she heads into the Spencer Mansion, a setup
04:16that brings some big problems.
04:19She goes from fighting off some pretty horrendous threats on her own in Zero, only to be in
04:25need of rescue from a minor enemy in the next game.
04:33She also learns some fairly useful information about the Umbrella Corporation that she neglects
04:39to tell Chris after the two meet up, which would have been pretty handy for him to know.
04:44What made her characterization such an obvious plot hole was that Resident Evil Zero was released
04:49the same year as the original game's remake, so comparing the two versions of Rebecca was
04:55painfully easy to do.
04:57Hey, that must be the old mansion that Enrico was talking about.
05:06Chris's Motivations Resident Evil Village
05:19There are a lot of things to love about Resident Evil Village, though Chris Redfield's behavior
05:26isn't one of them.
05:27He essentially acts villainous to maintain an air of mystery for the player, which is not
05:32only completely out of character, but ends up making the situation harder than it needs
05:37to be.
05:38From gunning down who we assume to be Mia, to kidnapping Rose without explaining that it
05:43wasn't Mia but Mother Miranda, to constantly scolding Ethan despite us doing a pretty good
05:48job all things considered.
05:56We know mischaracterization isn't necessarily a plot hole.
06:00Even still, Chris's choice to withhold vital information feels like a forced way to hide
06:05a plot twist.
06:13Jake Muller's Existence Resident Evil 6
06:24Back to Resident Evil 6, and unfortunately not for the last time, we have Jake Muller,
06:30the secret son of villain Albert Wesker.
06:32Setting aside how lazy the secret relative plotline is, as is the fact that Jake's blood
06:38holds highly useful antibodies for vaccines because of who his father was, there's a bigger
06:43problem with his existence.
06:45The same strain that you just took a dose of, it didn't affect you because you've got
06:51the antibodies.
06:53As we'd seen countless times, Wesker was one of the most intelligent and resourceful
06:58men on the planet, with access to a global intelligence network.
07:02You're telling me he never once learned about his secret son with the profitable blood that
07:07he would without a doubt exploit?
07:09Yeah, I'm not buying it.
07:12You've really become quite an inconvenience for me.
07:17The Outbreak Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3
07:25What's going on out there?
07:28The timeline of the second and third game have their stories overlapping with one another.
07:33RE3 shows the beginning of the outbreak in Raccoon City with Jill Valentine, while RE2 shows
07:39the city 24 hours later, when Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield arrive.
07:43Here is where a minor plot hole arrives, one that's more obvious in the remakes.
07:48The situation is, understandably, heavily televised, yet Leon and Claire are completely
07:54caught off guard when they make it to the city.
07:56You'd think that one of them would've heard about it, or at the very least, that there
08:01would've been blockades set up around the city keeping the damage from spreading further.
08:28The Umbrella Corporation has long been an overarching source of villainy throughout the series.
08:33We know it was started with the generational wealth of its founders, but with so many
08:38well-documented catastrophes, we have to wonder how it has managed to hold onto the seemingly
08:44endless resources that it uses for shady bioweapons research.
08:48To be fair, the outbreak of Raccoon City did have a significant fallout, as stated in RE4,
08:54and Umbrella has had less of a global impact in later games.
08:58Yet, we've seen retcons that have expanded on the lore, making it clear Umbrella should
09:03have been questioned long ago, and there have been several offshoots concerned with their
09:08own experiments, showing that the well will never truly run dry.
09:29one last time for RE6, we have a small detail that actually makes Chris look a lot worse at
09:36his job.
09:37Although it's really Karla in disguise, Chris meets Ada Wong for the first time in this game.
09:42While it's true they had never met in person before, he should still absolutely know who
09:48Ada is, and not be caught off guard when she starts acting like a villain.
09:52She played important roles in two games starring Leon Kennedy.
09:56And even if Leon never directly told Chris about her, the events of the fourth game were documented
10:02in something called the Kennedy Report.
10:04This was given to the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, or BSAA, of which Chris
10:11is a member, and so would have read.
10:14She's a key witness, we need her.
10:16A witness?
10:17She's the one who did all this!
10:19No, it wasn't her, it was Simmons, the national security advisor.
10:23I lost all my men because of her!
10:24And I lost over 70,000 people!
10:26The effects of the mold, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.
10:31Look at all the pretties my little girl is giving me!
10:38Kiss me, lover!
10:41By the time Ethan arrives at the Baker House in RE7, the mold has long taken hold of the
10:47family's minds and bodies.
10:49Produced by Evelyn, a genetically modified human, the mold makes her victims powerless against
10:54her control.
10:55But as far as the timeline goes, how long it takes for someone to be brought under her
11:00influence, it's a little messy.
11:03In the base game, you find notes explaining that it took some time for the Bakers to be
11:08fully lost.
11:09There's even a note that states Marguerite went to see a doctor.
11:12But in the DLC chapter, Daughters, we see when Evelyn first arrived.
11:16And the mold appears to work far more quickly.
11:20Immediately, actually.
11:21Either it happened right away, or it was gradual, but it cannot be both.
11:27She wants me to do this.
11:31Do you know of any other problematic plot holes in Resident Evil?
11:35Share them with us in the comments, and we will see you next time.
