00:05Welcome to MojoPlays, and I know this is very specific, but Silent Hill and Resident Evil
00:09keep dominating horror lists for classic consoles, and I just need a chance to spread the praise,
00:14so humor me. These are 20 great PS2 horror games that aren't Resident Evil or Silent Hill.
00:20Let's go. Before we continue, we publish content all week long,
00:24so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:30The Thing.
00:39Movie tie-ins have a terrible reputation, which makes The Thing such a pleasant surprise.
00:45Instead of just borrowing the name and throwing monsters at you,
00:47the game actually understands what made John Carpenter's film work. Paranoia.
00:51Your squadmates have a trust system, meaning fear and suspicion could slowly turn allies into liabilities.
00:57That made every encounter feel tense, even before the creatures showed up.
01:01Ammunition was limited, the enemies were suitably disgusting,
01:04and the frozen setting kept everything feeling isolated and miserable in the best way possible.
01:09It's a shockingly fun game, and guess what?
01:11It was just re-released on Steam with quality of life improvements. Go play it.
01:18Burn and burn.
01:21Jesus.
01:22Echo Night Beyond.
01:27Long before From Software became synonymous with Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring,
01:31it was making much stranger horror games like Echo Night Beyond.
01:35Set on The Moon, the story follows Richard and Claudia,
01:38whose honeymoon goes catastrophically wrong when supernatural forces interfere with their shuttle
01:42and cause a deadly crash. Richard survives, but many of the other passengers do not,
01:46leaving the lunar base packed with restless ghosts. Rather than fighting everything that moves,
01:50the game focuses on exploration, survival, and helping trap spirits move on.
01:55The mix of sci-fi machinery and traditional ghost story horror gives it a really unusual atmosphere.
02:01It's unrecognisable from Souls games, but recognisable in terms of quality.
02:05Commander. Everyone. I hope everyone is okay.
02:10Extermination.
02:11This is the first Antarctic mission for the Marine Special Forces recon.
02:15Don't let your guard down.
02:16Antarctica is already a miserable place to get stranded, and extermination somehow makes it worse.
02:22You play as Marine Sergeant Dennis Riley, sent to investigate a distress call from a remote
02:26research base that has clearly had a very bad week. For reals, stop doing this, people.
02:31It's never a good idea.
02:32By the time he arrives, most of the people are gone, and the place is crawling with creatures instead.
02:36Although Dennis is trained for combat, the game constantly reminds you that survival matters
02:40more than standing your ground. Running away is often the smarter option, especially when
02:44resources are limited and enemies can overwhelm you very, very, very, very quickly.
02:48Extermination may not be the PS2's most famous horror game, but its isolated setting and
02:53survival-focused design make it genuinely tense for the time. Also, it's such a rip-off of
02:58The Thing, that the fact that it's good is a testament to beating an unoriginal premise.
03:02Roger!
03:03Ha ha!
03:05Woo!
03:05Oh!
03:06Oh!
03:08Curse the Eye of Isis.
03:16A stolen Egyptian artifact, a deadly fog, and the British Museum slowly turning into a nightmare is a
03:22pretty solid setup for Curse the Eye of Isis. Set in 1890, the trouble begins after thieves make off for
03:28the
03:28Eye of Isis, unleashing a strange mist that kills or mutates anything it touches. Selfish. Most of the
03:34game straps you inside the museum, where dark holes and transformed creatures give the whole
03:38place a wonderfully creepy atmosphere. It does eventually branch out to locations including the
03:42coast and the pyramids of Egypt, adding some variety to your journey. Curse was rough around the
03:47edges and easy to miss, but there was a genuinely interesting horror game buried underneath all that
03:52jank and sand.
03:56Manhunt
03:56It looks like this goes all the way to the top. I can't trust anyone, least of all the police,
04:01and time's running out. I've got to get the one piece of evidence that will expose dark weather
04:06without a shadow of a doubt.
04:07Caster City is not exactly somewhere you would put on a holiday brochure. In Manhunt, you play as James
04:12Earl Cash, a death row inmate who survives what should have been his execution and wakes up trapped
04:17in a sick game run by a mysterious figure known as the Director. Freedom comes with one condition.
04:22Hunt down the gangs roaming the city and kill them for his entertainment. Almost anything lying
04:27around can become a weapon and the game's executions range from quick and brutal to outright disgusting
04:32and slow. That extreme violence made Manhunt infamous and led to bans and restrictions in several countries,
04:38but it almost overshadowed how decent the game actually was. It's, dare I say it, really fun.
04:48X-Files Resist or Serve
04:50The pair disappeared from their stepfather's Red Falls trailer home two weeks ago,
04:54only to reappear recently, coinciding with the mysterious deaths of three Red Falls residents.
05:00Having the actual cast and one of the show's writers involved gave the X-Files Resist or
05:04Serve a huge advantage over most licensed games. Set during the seventh season, it plays out like
05:10three missing episodes, with Mulder and Scully investigating another alien-heavy conspiracy
05:15that fits neatly into the series. The writing does a lot of the heavy lifting, but the creepy
05:19locations and survival horror structure help it feel more than a cheap tie-in. Ben's got something
05:25that actually respected the source material, while horror players got a solid PS2 game with a properly
05:29eerie atmosphere. Considering how badly licensed games can go in this era, this isn't half bad. In fact,
05:35it's half good.
05:41Step away. I'm a federal agent and I will fire.
05:44Castlevania Lament of Innocence
05:52Gothic horror does most of the heavy lifting in Castlevania Lament of Innocence. The game throws you
05:57into enormous castles, packed with skeletons, vampires, monsters and enough dark corridors to make every room
06:02feel slightly cursed. Combat is fast and flashy, so it never becomes outright terrifying, but the
06:07atmosphere stays strong thanks to the gloomy architecture and creepy music constantly hanging
06:11over everything. It's nowhere near as unsettling as Silent Hill or Fatal Frame, yet the setting
06:16gives it a distinct horror flavour that still works. Also, I know I probably shouldn't say this,
06:21but it holds up surprisingly well on modern emulators, making it one of the easier PS2 era
06:25horror games to revisit without fighting the hardware first.
06:34Onimusha 3 Demon Siege
06:45Onimusha 3 Demon Siege leads much harder into action than traditional survival horror, but its world is
06:50still packed with enough demons and supernatural nastiness to keep things dark and spooky. Samurai
06:55combat takes center stage, while ruined cities, grotesque enemies and eerie environments give the
07:00whole game a strong horror flavour. What really helps it stand out is the presentation. For a PS2 game,
07:06it still feels surprisingly cinematic, with smooth controls and combat that holds up well as well.
07:11If you want something creepy without constant bullets or getting stuck on puzzles, I'll throw this
07:16at your head. And if you catch it, you're worthy.
07:32Jennifer Tate gets thrown into the sort of rescue mission that makes a normal relationship problem
07:36look pretty manageable. In Primal, she travels through several demonic realms to save her boyfriend,
07:41joined by a gargoyle named Scree. You can switch between the two whenever needed,
07:45while the AI controls whoever you're not using. That works well, because Jennifer and Scree have
07:49completely different abilities, so progress often depends on knowing when to swap between them.
07:54It's easy to imagine how good a co-op version could have been, but the single-player setup still
07:58holds together nicely. It's shockingly fun, and available on most modern consoles.
08:05We should ask these tribesmen if they know anything about Jared's disappearance.
08:10Alone in the Dark, The New Nightmare.
08:22A murdered friend and three mysterious tablets are enough to drag Edward Canby back into another
08:27nightmare in Alone in the Dark, The New Nightmare. After Charles Fisk is killed, Canby starts digging
08:33into what happened and soon learns that Fisk had been searching for an ancient object believed to
08:37hold enormous power. Naturally, this investigation leads somewhere horrible. The game builds its
08:41tension through gloomy environments, strange creatures, and a heavy supernatural atmosphere
08:45that keeps everything feeling uneasy. As the fourth entry in the series, it brought back the
08:49long-running horror franchise onto the PS2 with a more modern presentation while still keeping the old
08:54school survival horror vibe.
09:03Shadow Hearts Covenant
09:05The following day, Lieutenant Koenig, you were found by the Metz Highway, along with Sergeant Robert and
09:12eight survivors. Yes, sir.
09:14A few PS2 RPGs get as weird as Shadow Hearts Covenant. Instead of relying on traditional survival
09:20horror tricks, it builds its darker side through cursed characters, grotesque monsters, supernatural
09:25folklore, and environments that always feel slightly wrong. Combat is turn-based, so the fear comes from
09:30the atmosphere and creature design, rather than hitting, shooting, or smacking. What makes it stand out is how
09:36comfortably it mixes all of that horror with genuinely funny moments, without completely ruining the mood.
09:41It's a tough balance that most people could never nail. It may not terrify you,
09:46but it absolutely earns its place among the PS2's strangest horror experiences.
09:56Cold Fear
10:05A storm-battered ship is such a good horror setting that it's surprising more games haven't copied Cold Fear.
10:11The rocking decks, crashing waves, and cramped corridors constantly make movement feel unstable,
10:17which gives the whole game a personality of its own. At launch, plenty of people wrote it off as a
10:21Resident Evil 4 imitation, even though the two arrived around the same time. The comparison never
10:26really did Cold Fear any favours. Its controls, shooting, and environment ideas have actually aged
10:31surprisingly well, and the nautical setting still feels fresh. It may not be the better game when
10:36compared to Resident Evil 4, but it absolutely deserves more attention than it got. And today,
10:41Resident Evil can take a hike.
10:48Rule of Rose
11:01Some horror games want to scare you. Rule of Rose mostly wants to make you feel deeply
11:05uncomfortable for several hours. Its story follows a young girl trapped in a cruel world ruled by
11:10children. And the further you go, the nastier its themes become. The game has built an almost mythical
11:15reputation thanks to bans, controversy, and ridiculously expensive physical copies, but
11:20there's more here than forbidden game mystique. The combat is clumsy and the pacing can drag,
11:25yet the atmosphere is genuinely oppressive. It focuses on psychological cruelty, humiliation,
11:30and dread, instead of relying on constant jump scares. Rule of Rose feels grimy, strange,
11:35and like reading under a sheet with a flashlight. It's hard to nail that feeling.
11:43Obscure
11:44Hey Josh, get out of the way. But I've got to finish up my story on the basketball team for
11:48the paper.
11:49Yo dawg, Kenny, chill out man, leave me alone. Come on, let's hit the showers.
11:53Teen horror is everywhere in movies, but games have barely touched the idea, which makes Obscure stand out
11:58immediately. If I had my way, this would be number one. I love this game. Set around a school full
12:03of
12:03students being hunted by monsters, it leans into that slasher movie setup while adding some genuinely
12:08clever mechanics. Enemies need to be exposed to light before they can be properly hurt, forcing you
12:12to manage equipment carefully and think about what carries what. Because each character can only hold
12:17limited gear, the system works especially well in co-op, where players have to actually coordinate
12:21instead of hoarding everything. Couch multiplayer makes the whole thing more chaotic and fun,
12:25but playing alone gives the atmosphere much more room to breathe. Obscure deserved far more attention
12:30than it ever got, because it works in both formats.
12:44Clock Tower 3
12:46Dearest Alyssa, how have you been? I think of you every day. It seems such a long time since you
12:52started your life at boarding school. Being completely unable to fight back gives Clock Tower 3 a very
12:58different flavour from most PS2 horror games. The series began with point-and-click roots, but by
13:02this entry, it had shifted to direct movement while keeping the same core idea. Your teenage
13:07protagonist is horribly, horribly vulnerable. When one of the game's killers starts chasing you,
13:12the answer is usually not combat. It's running, it's hiding, and it's hoping that they lose track of
13:18you before panic takes over. That hide-and-seek structure felt unusually fresh at the time, and still
13:23works surprisingly well now, given how many games have embraced this type of game. The helpless
13:27protagonist's idea has obviously been borrowed, but Clock Tower 3 was doing it before the concept
13:31became fashionable.
13:37The Suffering
13:37I swear Abbott's full enough already.
13:40At least when you escort an inmate to death row, you know he's scheduled to get what he deserves.
13:44Ernesto, you can really be a jackass, you know that?
13:47You hear what this one did? I don't wanna know, and you know when I-
13:50He beat his ex-wife to a bloody pulp. Killed her with his fists.
13:53The Suffering is a tricky one to rank because it leans much harder into action than pure survival
13:57horror. If this list was based on personal favourites, it'd probably sit a couple numbers higher.
14:02The prison setting, gruesome atmosphere, and absolutely horrible creature designs
14:05make it impossible not to love. The game throws you into a nightmare full of violence and grotesque
14:10enemies, then gives you enough firepower to fight them back rather than simply survive.
14:14That makes it closer to something like Ghost Hunter, but the horror elements remain strong
14:18throughout. Its sequel, The Suffering Ties That Bind, was decent as well, though it never had
14:23quite the same impact as the original.
14:28The Suffering Ties That Bind, The Suffering Ties
14:41Kuhn
14:42Some people have Kuhn sitting on a shelf worth a small fortune. From Software's PS2 horror game was
14:48genuinely frightening, but it was also punishing in a way that made every bit of progress feel earned.
14:53The atmosphere is filthy, oppressive, and full of the kind of supernatural dread the studio clearly
14:59understood long before Dark Souls existed. Then there are the Tempest events, which feel like they
15:03were designed by someone actively offended by player comfort. Kuhn was scary, difficult, and deeply
15:09strange, which probably explains why it's become such a cult favourite. Shame my retirement plan never
15:13included actually buying a copy.
15:21Haunting Ground
15:30Give Clock Tower 3 a dog, deepen the mechanics, and polish up the gothic horror, and you end up
15:34somewhere near Haunting Ground. Capcom developed it with several people who'd worked on Clock Tower 3,
15:39so the spiritual connection is pretty obvious. Fiona is frequently hunted by deeply unpleasant pursuers,
15:45leaving running and hiding as her safest option, rather than simply beating everything senseless.
15:49It's so underappreciated that Capcom just straight up reused Fiona's face for Jill in Resident Evil 5.
15:55The big addition to the game is Huey, a dog who can distract enemies, help solve puzzles, and generally
16:00make Fiona feel slightly less doomed, and make us feel slightly less alone. That extra partnership adds more
16:05depth to the familiar hide-and-seek formula than you'd probably expect.
16:14Huey?
16:18Siren
16:18Can't you walk a bit more slowly? I'm losing you.
16:23What do you mean?
16:24Getting comfortable in Siren is impossible, which is exactly the point. The cursed village is confusing,
16:30hostile, and full of enemies who can seem almost harmless until they spot you and suddenly become
16:34a serious problem. Missions jump between different characters and objectives, so the game really
16:39lets you settle into one predictable rhythm. It's defining mechanic, and arguably the whole reason
16:43it's on this list, is sight-jacking, which allows you to see through the eyes of enemies and nearby
16:47characters. That sounds useful, and it is, but it also makes you painfully aware of how close danger
16:53really is, and it results in some of the most interesting and unplanned jump scares in PS2 history.
17:05Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly
17:15Arming the player with a camera instead of a gun is still one of the smartest ideas survival horror
17:20ever came up with. Project Zero 2 Crimson Butterfly takes the already brilliant concept
17:24and improves almost everything around it. You're forced to face ghosts directly through the camera
17:29obscura, meaning the safest way to fight is often to stare straight at whatever's terrifying you.
17:34The first Project Zero, or Fatal Frame, was more shocking because the idea was completely new,
17:39but the sequel is stronger in pacing, atmosphere, and overall design. Its haunted village feels oppressive,
17:44the encounters are more refined, and the story lands way harder. It may not have the same novelty,
17:49but as a complete horror game, Crimson Butterfly is the better package.
