00:00Couldn't leave well enough alone, huh?
00:03You just had to follow me all the way out here.
00:07How many times do I have to kill you?
00:09Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're getting scared, but with better graphics.
00:13I'll never complain about a good video game remake.
00:16I know it has problematic effects for the industry, but I just can't get enough.
00:19And a horror game remake, take my goddamn money.
00:23These are the 20 most terrifying moments in horror game remakes.
00:26Let's go.
00:27Before we continue, we publish content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:32the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:36Don't Look Back, Layers of Fear
00:44Rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5, Layers of Fear looks seriously impressive.
00:48Every detail pops more now.
00:51From the warped hallways to rooms that seem to change when you're not looking, it's fear
00:55but the way higher pixel count.
00:56One standout scare clearly takes inspiration from P.T.
01:01In the original, after a quick fake out with a curtain blowing in your face, you'll notice
01:04a message on the door saying, don't look back.
01:06Naturally, you either look back quickly, and yep, the ghost is right behind you, screaming
01:09and grabbing you with her messed up face front and center, or you look back slowly, get a
01:13look and go, damn, she's spooky, and then she jumps at your face.
01:17Either way, there's some serious face jumping.
01:19In the remake, the jump scare pre-empts and gets you moving into the room.
01:22You can look away and back to the door for an added spook, but nothing compares to that
01:26first jump scare.
01:31Intersection Creature Alone in the Dark
01:37More of a reimagining than a remake, it might not have been exactly what fans were hoping
01:41for, but Alone in the Dark is still a big step up from the original in a lot of ways.
01:46The performances alone helped carry it, especially with David Harbour and Jodie Comer, who make
01:51the hunt for the mysterious Darkman feel way more engaging than expected.
01:55One moment that really sticks is the Intersection Creature, a shadowy, warped figure, just standing
02:01there, until you get close, and it suddenly bolts straight at you like something out of
02:04your worst nightmare.
02:05Gross.
02:13Fighting David, The Last of Us Part 1
02:24I didn't feel like there was much room to improve on The Last of Us Remastered, but somehow
02:28Naughty Dog pulled it off with The Last of Us Part 1.
02:31The visual upgrade alone makes a huge difference, especially in 4K, and the added accessibility
02:36options open the door for more players to experience Joel and Ellie's story.
02:39But the real standout is the facial animation.
02:42Every emotion hits harder, and the quieter moments feel just as heavy as the action.
02:47Then, there's David, easily one of the most disturbing characters in the game.
02:51With Joel out of action, Ellie is forced into a tense, drawn-out fight, where stealth is
02:55everything, all while the building burns around her.
02:57Finding David and sneaking up on him is scary.
03:00Losing David and trying to find him when he might already have eyes on you?
03:04Unmatched scary.
03:05Man.
03:07Don't say I didn't give you a chance.
03:12Nemesis appears early, Resident Evil 3.
03:15Three more days, then I can kiss this town goodbye.
03:17Right at the start of Resident Evil 3, the game doesn't waste any time throwing you into
03:21chaos.
03:22Brad radios Jill with very helpful advice, saying,
03:25You gotta get out of there.
03:26Great tip.
03:27Noted.
03:27But before you can even process that, the game hits you with a massive jump scare.
03:32Nemesis suddenly smashes through the wall out of nowhere, and it's completely unpredictable,
03:37especially if you're expecting it to play out like the original.
03:39It doesn't.
03:40That's what makes it so effective.
03:42It's new, it's loud, and it catches you off guard in the best or worst way.
03:53The final hour's Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster.
04:06Capcom might call it a deluxe remaster, but let's be real, this version of Dead Rising
04:11feels way closer to a full remake, and it's technically listed as a remake, so I'm including
04:14it.
04:15Built from scratch, using the RE engine, it keeps the core game intact, while upgrading
04:20just about everything around it.
04:22Visually, it looks way better.
04:23The AI isn't as brain dead, and there are a bunch of small quality of life tweaks that
04:28make a big difference.
04:29But honestly, none of that is the real selling point.
04:32The actual game changer, you can skip time.
04:36No more standing around doing nothing, waiting for events to kick off.
04:39Once you use it, there's no going back.
04:41And weirdly, even with that control, those final in-game hours still feel tense, as you
04:47scramble to wrap up everything before the clock runs out.
05:01Game Over Sequence System Shock
05:03Back in 1994, System Shock didn't just release, it exploded.
05:14Set aboard Citadel Station and ruled by the unhinged AI Shodan, the remake gives the whole
05:20experience a serious upgrade, without losing what made it creepy in the first place.
05:24The visuals are now in HD, the gameplay feels modernised, but that same uneasy atmosphere
05:29is still hanging over everything.
05:31You'll deal with twisted cyborgs, mutated enemies, and a Game Over screen that is aggressively
05:35shocking.
05:36One, showing a character dragged into a massive machine and turned into something else entirely.
05:39It's disturbing in a way that stays with you long after you've stopped playing.
05:57The Hospital Siren Blood Curse
06:08Siren Blood Curse marked the third entry in the series, and basically reworked the original
06:12game, which made sense considering the earlier titles flew under the radar a bit.
06:16As the first one on the PS3, it blends classic survival horror with heaviest stealth elements,
06:20and it really leans into making the player feel vulnerable and scared, and about 10 years
06:25old, and named Matthew.
06:26A lot of tension comes from how little control you actually have in certain situations.
06:31The most memorable section drops you into a creepy Silent Hill-style hospital, filled with
06:35unsettling nurses and patients wandering around.
06:37The twist is, you're not some hardened survivor, you're a young girl, which makes everything
06:41way more intense.
06:49Isaac becoming a Necromorph Dead Space
06:58It had been a while since survival horror really hit hard, so EA decided to just jump
07:03back to 2008 and remake Dead Space in 2023.
07:06The remake doesn't just look better, it changes how you approach combat.
07:10The ship itself has been tweaked, opening up new paths and making exploration less predictable,
07:14especially with enemies showing up in different places after death.
07:18But the real horror comes from the Necromorphs, particularly the Divider.
07:22It falls apart into separate pieces, they crawl towards you, and if you mess up, its head
07:27can latch onto Isaac and kill him in a brutal animation where it rips his head off and takes
07:31its place.
07:31Don't lose your mind about it though.
07:39Arana Resident Evil 4
07:48Resident Evil 4
07:49Resident Evil 4 was never the scariest, and the remake followed suit, with the terror being
07:53less about jump scares and more about particular enemies.
07:56Partway through Resident Evil 4, the game throws something new at you that instantly messes with
08:00your expectations, the Arana.
08:02These things are basically spider-like versions of the Las Plagas Parasite, and unlike what you've
08:07dealt with before, they don't stay hidden inside a host.
08:09Instead, they jump between bodies, controlling them while using them as a shield.
08:13They move fast, skidding around in a way that's just plain uncomfortable to watch, and they'll
08:17even try to latch onto Leon if you're not careful.
08:28Prison of Hope
08:33Before you can reach the highest parts of Latria, or Latria, in Demon's Souls, the game forces
08:39you to climb up from its darkest depths, an area known as the Prison of Hope. And yeah,
08:44if you thought Dark Souls 3 had some nightmare fuel with Irithal Dungeon, this place takes
08:48it further. It's a maze of cramped hallways, locked cells, and sudden drop-offs that keep
08:52you constantly on edge. But the real reason this area sticks with you isn't the prisoners,
08:56it's the Mind Flayers roaming around.
09:08The Basement, The Last of Us Part 1
09:10The Basement section in The Last of Us Part 1 is one of those moments where everything
09:22just goes wrong at once. You're already on edge because the place is pitch black, flooded,
09:26and full of infected, but the second you start that generator, the game flips the switch on you.
09:31Suddenly you're not exploring, you're running, and stalkers start creeping out from nowhere,
09:35forcing you to constantly check your surroundings. And just as you think it can't get worse,
09:40a bloater shows up. That's what really seals it. You're trapped in tight corridors with something
09:45that can kill you in a second, all while trying to figure out where to go and what to grab.
09:49It's a mix of panic, limited visibility, and pooping your pants.
10:01Music Box, Layers of Fear
10:10Right at the end of the Child's Room segment in Layers of Fear, things take a seriously disturbing
10:14turn once you step into the bedroom and interact with the glowing music box. At first,
10:18it seems almost harmless, casting colourful shapes across the walls like something out of a kid's
10:22toy, but that doesn't last long. The longer it plays, the more your vision starts to warp and
10:27the whole room slowly shifts into something much darker. Toys begin moving on their own,
10:31the windows start opening and closing at a steady rhythm, and a baby doll repeatedly smashes its head
10:36against a crib in time with the music. It's less about a single scare and more about being trapped
10:40in a moment that keeps getting worse.
10:49The Falling Woman Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly Remake
10:56The Falling Woman in the Fatal Frame 2 Remake is one of those enemies that sticks with you for all
11:00the
11:01wrong reasons. Her story alone is rough. She ended her life by trying to jump from a high floor and
11:06now her spirit is trapped, forcing to relive that moment over and over and over again. You first
11:12encounter her in a sudden shocking way as she comes crashing down the stairs, screaming as she falls.
11:16It's not just a jump scare either, because what comes next is even harder to watch. The Fall has
11:21clearly messed up her body, leaving her limbs twisted and useless, so instead of standing,
11:26she drags herself across the ground towards you. I've been drunk, but not that drunk.
11:38Crimson Head Resident Evil
11:44Alongside Silent Hill, the original Resident Evil helped define survival horror. When Capcom brought
11:49it back in 2002 with a full remake, the upgraded visuals and sharper detail made everything feel
11:54way more intense. The famous dog window scare is still terrifying, but at least you expect it. What
11:59you don't expect are the Crimson Heads. These mutated zombies completely changed the rules,
12:05moving just as fast as Chris and Jill, and swiping at you with brutal claw attacks.
12:09Suddenly, running isn't as safe as it used to be, and if you decide to stand your ground instead,
12:14you're in for a bad time.
12:26Opening Elevator Chase Sequence Dead Space
12:28The first real encounter with Necromorphs in Dead Space hits way harder than you'd expect,
12:39especially once Isaac and his team step onto the Ishimura. Things go south fast when one
12:44suddenly bursts out behind Chen, impaling him and smashing his body against the window right in
12:48front of you. It's brutal, and it's impossible to ignore. But somehow that's just a warm-up. What
12:53follows is pure panic. You're forced to sprint down a narrow hallway with no way to fight back,
12:58surrounded by flashing orange lights and alarms going off non-stop, slashes start bursting out of
13:03vents from all directions, and the only escape is praying you don't mess up the route.
13:14Sherry Section Resident Evil 2
13:22When Resident Evil 2 got its remake in 2019, it wasn't just a visual upgrade. It completely reworked
13:28the experience from the ground up, becoming easily my favorite remake on this list. Using the RE engine,
13:34Capcom gave Raccoon City a much more realistic and grim look, with lighting and detail that make
13:40every hallway feel alive in the worst way. The shift to an over-the-shoulder camera and tighter
13:45controls made combat feel more useful and more substantial, but one section flips the whole game
13:50on its head. The Sherry Birkin segment. Suddenly you're defenseless, sneaking through the orphanage
13:55with no way to fight back. Being hunted by Chief Irons turns it into pure survival horror.
14:00He's worse than Mr. X, trading action for tension as you hide, setting up a moment that wasn't matched
14:06until you return to the orphanage five years later in Resident Evil Requiem.
14:10You need to learn to listen.
14:13Leave me alone! Just please!
14:16Time to teach some manners.
14:21Showdown with Eddie, Silent Hill 2
14:23Couldn't leave well enough alone, huh?
14:27You just had to follow me all the way out here.
14:31How many times do I have to kill you?
14:34Eddie's breakdown in Silent Hill 2 was always uncomfortable, but the remake pushes it even further.
14:39What starts as a guy, who seems more sad than threatening, slowly twists into something much
14:44darker, and the shift feels way more real this time. Blooper team really leans into the facial
14:49detail and body language, so by the time you reach the meat locker, Eddie doesn't even feel like the
14:53same person anymore. He's laughing to himself, he's twitchy, he's completely gone. Then the fight
14:59kicks off and it's chaos. It's not scary in a traditional monster way, but it hits harder because
15:04it feels human. Except when he sprints at you through the fog, that just feels pure horror.
15:16I'm coming for you.
15:19Garada Encounter Resident Evil 4
15:27One of the standout moments in RE4 comes with Leon as he's exploring with Ashley and suddenly
15:32crashes through some rotten floorboards. That alone is enough to catch you off guard,
15:35but the real panic kicks in when he stands up and comes face to face with a Garada in the
15:40dark.
15:40It's right there, chained up, massive and way too close for comfort. The twist is that it's blind but
15:46reacts to sound, which makes every movement risky, especially with chains hanging everywhere that
15:51you can accidentally hit. It balances fear with genuinely gripping gameplay, which is horror at
15:57its best. Or its worst.
16:07Meeting Mr. X Resident Evil 2
16:14Even if you'd played the original RE2, nothing really prepares you for how Mr. X shows up in the
16:19remake. He's no longer just a tough enemy, he's a constant problem. The moment he arrives in RPD,
16:24the whole game changes. His heavy footsteps echo through the building, and that low dread-filled
16:29music kicks in, instantly putting you on edge. You can try sneaking around him, and sometimes it works.
16:35For a bit. But he always finds his way back to you. That's what makes it so stressful. He's just
16:39with you forever. Like fedora herpes.
16:52Toluca Prison, Silent Hill 2
17:03A lot of people were worried about the Silent Hill 2 remake going in, especially with Blooper
17:08team behind it, but it ended up being way closer to the original than anyone expected. Instead of
17:13changing everything, they kept the small details that made the story so rewarding, and surprisingly
17:18barely cut any content. Where things do change is in areas like Toluca Prison, which has been expanded
17:23and reworked quite a bit, and for the better. The layout is bigger, with new sections added in,
17:28and it's much darker overall thanks to the over-the-shoulder view limiting what you can see.
17:33Lighting plays a big role in this section, feeling scarier than any Silent Hill entry ever has.
