00:06What did you see?
00:08I saw a complete body hanging by the neck
00:10from a length of string tied to the top horizontal scaffolding tube.
00:14His feet were dangling in the water.
00:16The hurried British investigation was very badly handled.
00:20They hadn't investigated the scene properly
00:23because the police suspected it was suicide.
00:26Roberto Calvary was certified dead at Waterloo Pier.
00:29The cause of death, the asphyxia due to hanging,
00:32and that he killed himself.
00:34To be frank about it, it would have been done,
00:36but then the family hired their own investigators.
00:40The question of who killed Calvary is who didn't kill Calvary.
00:44It could have been the mob, P2, the Vatican, the CIA, even the KGB.
00:51This man had so many enemies.
00:53If you wanted to come up with a suspect list, it's a long list.
00:59Calvary was somebody whose time had come.
01:16The KGB is no one of them.
01:17The KGB.
01:19The KGB.
01:20The KGB.
01:46The family hired an investigative agency Kroll,
01:50which is run by former FBI agents at the time.
01:53And there was a fellow that really came on the case for two years, Jeff Katz.
02:00He was somebody who was a superb investigator.
02:03He didn't want to do it the wrong way.
02:05He didn't like dumpster diving, illegal phone taps,
02:09cutting the corners that many private investigators had before Kroll came around.
02:14He viewed investigations as intelligence gathering,
02:18shoe leather work, meticulous details,
02:21trying to piece things together that might unearth the truth in Roberto Calvi's death.
02:25Your assertion is that your husband was murdered
02:27to keep him from naming people involved in international fraud.
02:31We want to prove not only that he was murdered,
02:34but that he was the victim of forces out of his control,
02:40forces that ultimately controlled him.
02:46We need to look again at the crime scene.
02:48We need our own forensics expert.
02:50Ten years later, what can we expect to find?
02:53We need to review what exists.
02:55We need to understand all the possible ways he could have ended up hanging from that bridge.
02:59How did he get there?
03:00I hear a lot of conjecture, but what's actually scientifically plausible?
03:04Anyone in mind?
03:05Angela Gallup.
03:06She's the best.
03:09In 1992, Jeff Katz of Kroll Associates got in touch with me.
03:14Gallup is a forensics expert.
03:16She resolved the question whether Princess Di was pregnant when she died
03:19by taking a part of her stomach lining
03:22and being able to show that it didn't have the right chemical.
03:24Angela, Jeff Katz from Kroll.
03:26How can I help you, Jeff?
03:28Well, I'm asking you ten years later than I should,
03:30but I have a job for you.
03:32The original crime scene was botched.
03:34I need you to take a look at the evidence that still exists.
03:37Jeff wanted me to look at the forensic science aspects.
03:41I'm known for setting up and running full-scale forensic laboratories
03:46and also my particular interest,
03:49which is leading teams for cold case investigations.
03:53I was very aware that this high-profile Italian banker
03:57had been found hanging from scaffolding underneath Blackfriars Bridge.
04:02Everybody had assumed it was suicide and so they hadn't investigated the scene properly.
04:08I remember saying, well, this is a very unusual case
04:11and I don't know at this stage whether I will be able to help.
04:19I spent some time down at Blackfriars Bridge.
04:23It was a little bit different.
04:25There was no scaffolding there in 1992.
04:27But I was very much looking at the foreshore there
04:30and what happened at low tide when it got exposed.
04:34I must admit, sometimes as I started to get into it,
04:37I thought, you know, my goodness, you know, what have I bitten off here?
04:42It's a bit more than, you know, maybe I can chew.
04:49You always have to understand the context of the case that you're investigating.
04:55It's within that context that you look for certain types of evidence.
05:00It's about the crime scene,
05:01but it's about everything that went on around the crime scene as well.
05:05Details like that can be really important.
05:11The web of players is complex.
05:14Each with a strong motive to want Calvi disappeared.
05:19Suspects span Italy's vast centers of power.
05:23The Vatican, a secret Masonic lodge, the American CIA, and Cosa Nostra.
05:31One of the problems with the Calvi case was the excessive number of suspects,
05:37starting with the Vatican itself.
05:40He was potentially a source of major embarrassment
05:43and reputational harm to them.
05:46The Vatican is an extraordinary power behind the scenes,
05:53which mustn't be ignored.
05:56How does the Vatican get so caught up in something like this?
06:00You mean out millions, marred by scandal and accused of murder?
06:04I have books for you.
06:08The reputation of the Vatican has really taken a hit for decades,
06:13particularly when Archbishop Paul Marsinkus
06:16dragged it into the whole problem of the Banco Ambrosiano.
06:20The chairman is found hanging under a bridge in London.
06:24It was an extraordinary moment of crisis for the reputation of the church.
06:33Pope Paul VI named Marsinkus secretary of the IOR in 1969,
06:37around the time he became an archbishop.
06:39Why a priest from Chicago?
06:41Didn't he want a banker?
06:43He's not even Italian.
06:44Paul VI wanted someone he knew he could trust, someone loyal.
06:48And that was Marsinkus.
06:52He is Archbishop Paul Marsinkus,
06:54who climbed from the blue-collar churches of Cicero, Illinois,
06:57to this tower in the outer walls of St. Peter's,
07:00where he heads the Vatican bank.
07:02He was very unlike the typical priest who might be small and meek.
07:07He was a big kind of macho man.
07:13The nickname for Marsinkus inside the Vatican was the guerrilla,
07:16and it was not said as a term of affection.
07:19Because of his size, six feet, five inches tall,
07:22he became the unofficial bodyguard of the Pope
07:25as they went around on trips.
07:27He didn't have any sort of financial training or background at all.
07:31Although I will look at that and say,
07:33boy, did they pick the wrong guy to run the Vatican bank.
07:37From Sindona's perspective, the Pope picked exactly the right person.
07:42Marsinkus was the perfect person for the other two to use
07:45because they had, by him, the stamp of approval of the Vatican bank.
07:51The Vatican bank could handle money
07:53and it could be distributed around the world in a confidential manner.
08:00The operation that brings these three key players together
08:04is when they set up the Banco Ambrosiano Overseas Limited in the Bahamas.
08:11It was believed to be the only example of a Catholic bishop in the world
08:16who was serving on the board of a bank.
08:19By having untraceable funds,
08:22they could be used for any ideologically driven projects
08:26as well as money-making projects.
08:31The Vatican bank has no balance sheets.
08:33There's no advisory board.
08:35There's no independent board.
08:37It has one shareholder, the Pope.
08:39So therefore, you don't have to worry
08:42if you happen to take a few dollars on the side for yourself.
08:44But that wasn't Marsinkus.
08:46He was interested in their own power.
08:48He did, at times, take off millions of dollars.
08:52An example was when they did this backdoor deal on this Catholic bank.
08:59Calvi wanted to acquire a Catholic bank in Venice
09:03called Banca Cattolica del Veneto.
09:06With Banca Cattolica del Veneto,
09:09Banca Ambrosiano will be the largest private sector bank
09:12in the Italian banking system.
09:16Marchinkus actually sold him 50%.
09:18The deal was that Calvi would buy,
09:21through Ambrosiano, 37%.
09:23And you know what happened on the side?
09:25The extra 13%.
09:26That money comes back into the Vatican bank
09:29as cash that Marchinkus uses for other things.
09:32Six and a half million dollars
09:33to buy himself a cardinal's position.
09:36But the top Catholic official in Venice,
09:40Luciani,
09:41was opposed to the deal
09:42and he objected to Marcinkus.
09:44This deal is against the church's long-term interest.
09:49And excuse me,
09:50but I don't think Calvi has the best interest
09:53of the parishioners in mind.
09:55Eminence, no disrespect.
09:57But don't you have anything better to do?
10:00Sono stato trattato da Marchinkus
10:02come se fosse un bidello.
10:05This is a conversation
10:07no number of Hail Marys will fix for Marchinkus.
10:10A conversation he will live to regret.
10:18I have been an investigating judge
10:22in the 70s and 80s.
10:25Through our investigations,
10:28relationships came out
10:30that the Vatican bank
10:33was related with the finance affairs
10:37of Michele Sindona,
10:40Roberto Calvi,
10:41and the mafia.
10:47The new mafia,
10:49ruthless and acting without compassion.
10:51The gangs control the food markets
10:53and almost every form of commerce,
10:55but they make their big money
10:56in the drug rack.
10:57It was the beginning
10:58of the drugs story
11:02in Palermo, Sicily.
11:04From the port in Palermo,
11:06between two and four tons of heroin
11:08are shipped to the U.S. each year.
11:10They made a lot of money,
11:11so they needed someone
11:12to invest that money.
11:24Sindona was the right guy
11:26in the right moment.
11:28People called him the treasure
11:29of the mafia.
11:30This was a very important name.
11:34He specialized in money laundering.
11:37Signor Calon.
11:38From what we know
11:39from mafia witnesses,
11:42Sindona was the main banker
11:43for the older Palermo families
11:46who were the ones
11:47who were first involved
11:48in the heroin trafficking.
11:50People would say,
11:51don't cross Michele Sindona
11:52because he's connected.
11:54You'll have nothing but problems.
11:58Mafia operatives
11:59could have been just the kind
12:00of personnel that you needed
12:02on the ground
12:02to park Mr. Calbee
12:06under the bridge
12:07with a noose around his neck.
12:10Looking back,
12:11we all know where the downturn starts.
12:18When Sindona's at his height,
12:20he's now a storied success
12:22because he's gone on
12:23to make it big
12:24in America.
12:28Sindona acquired
12:29an American bank,
12:30which was one of the largest banks
12:32in the U.S.
12:34He's buying a stake
12:35in Franklin National,
12:36the bank,
12:37to use that bank
12:38to further his transfers
12:40and his offshore accounts
12:42and to run it
12:43through Franklin National.
12:45This empire
12:46that he's built
12:47has hundreds of millions
12:48of dollars
12:49in loans
12:49that aren't going
12:50to be paid back.
12:51It's not,
12:52will it fall apart?
12:53What will fall apart first?
13:001973 dramatized
13:01dependence on foreign oil.
13:03All countries
13:04that were heavily dependent
13:06on foreign oil imports,
13:08such as Italy,
13:09their currency plummeted
13:10in value.
13:12This caused havoc
13:14for Sindona.
13:16At the same time,
13:18the currency traders
13:19inside Franklin National
13:20made the wrong bet
13:21on the lira and the dollar
13:22and got creamed
13:24by the market.
13:26Franklin National
13:27becomes the largest bankruptcy
13:28in American history
13:30at that point.
13:32The man Fortune magazine
13:34pegged the previous year
13:36with a $450 million net worth
13:39now holds huge paper losses
13:41on foreign currency trades.
13:44Plummeting stock prices
13:45mean he cannot raise
13:46enough money
13:47to cover his bad bets.
13:49He had lost money
13:50for powerful people.
13:52He had lost money
13:53and put the Vatican
13:54into a terrible position.
13:57With a financial empire
13:59that is on the edge
14:01of collapse,
14:02Sindona thinks
14:03I will call in
14:05all the favors
14:06that I gave in the past.
14:08I'm Sindona for Calvi.
14:09Thank you, Graziella.
14:11Sindona tried to get help
14:13from Calvi
14:14by saying
14:15you should give me
14:16back my money.
14:17Ho 18 milioni
14:19di dollari
14:20in una joint venture
14:21con te
14:21e ho bisogno
14:23di quei soldi
14:24indietro.
14:25Michele,
14:26il denaro
14:26è impegnato
14:27in affari
14:27con altre società
14:28incluso il Vaticano.
14:31Buongiorno
14:32dottor Sindona.
14:33Il dottor Calvi?
14:34Il dottor Calvi
14:35è uscito.
14:36È normale
14:37che mi eviti.
14:38È spaventato
14:39dalla mia situazione
14:40e ha paura
14:41di essere mandato
14:42in rovina
14:42per associazione
14:43con me.
14:44E se non
14:44sta attento
14:45potrebbe pure
14:46succedere.
14:50Calvi
14:50was very
14:51nervous.
14:53He turned
14:53to the P2
14:54Lodge
14:55for protection.
14:56They claimed
14:57to have
14:58political influence
14:59so he asked
15:00them to help him.
15:03P2
15:03was extremely
15:04powerful
15:05in Italian
15:06business.
15:07It was
15:07an elite club
15:08to be part of
15:09to advance
15:10your career.

15:29but
15:30our
15:30knowledge
15:31was not
15:32complete.
15:34P2
15:35was really
15:35run
15:36by one
15:36man.
15:37He
15:38was connected
15:38to everybody.

15:48Was he
15:49too
15:49complicit
15:50in Calvi's
15:50murder?
15:54Jeff Katz
15:56told me a lot
15:56about the
15:57background
15:58to the
15:59story
16:00and there
16:00were some
16:01connections
16:01I understand
16:02with
16:02Blackfriars
16:04and therefore
16:05Blackfriars

16:07It's certainly

17:13Gelli
17:13and
17:13Sindona
17:14met
17:14in the
17:14mid-60s.
17:15Their
17:15relationship
17:16was mutually
17:17beneficial.
17:18Gelli
17:18had political
17:19connections
17:19and Sindona
17:20had banks.
17:21Money.
17:23Sindona
17:23was financing

17:33Gelli
17:34was a
17:35recruit
17:35and ended
17:36up being
17:37a good
17:37recruit.
17:39The key
17:39to P2's
17:41power
17:41was its
17:42usefulness
17:43for the
17:44Cold War
17:45and for
17:46Italy's
17:47American
17:47masters.
17:49The key
17:50cement
17:50justifying
17:52everything
17:52was
17:53commitment
17:54to the
17:55anti-communist
17:56cause.
17:57The idea
17:58was to
17:58prevent
17:59communists
18:00from taking
18:00power.
18:01Anything
18:01was justified
18:02to win.
18:04In Italy
18:06this was
18:06the beginning
18:06of the
18:07strategy
18:07of
18:07tension.
18:11This
18:12attempt
18:13at
18:14spreading
18:14fear
18:15and terror
18:16across the
18:18country
18:18by
18:19staging
18:20bomb
18:21attacks.
18:23Now
18:23behind
18:24this
18:24strategy
18:25there
18:25were
18:25rightist
18:26neo-fascist
18:27parliamentary
18:28groups
18:29and also
18:30state
18:31intelligence
18:31agencies.
18:33NATO
18:33and CIA
18:34was involved.
18:37Many of
18:37these right-wing
18:38bombings
18:39were
18:39staged to look
18:41as though
18:41they were the work
18:41of left-wing
18:42extremists
18:43with the plan
18:44of scapegoating
18:45people.
18:46For Italy
18:46it was a
18:47disaster.
18:50The
18:50fascists
18:51wanted
18:52to be able
18:53to create
18:53enough
18:53instability
18:54that
18:54average

26:46the
26:46value
26:46of
26:46the
26:47dollar
26:47to
26:47rise
26:47sharply.
26:49So
26:49imagine
26:49you have
26:50a debt
26:51that you
26:51have to
26:51pay
26:51that's
26:52in
26:52dollars
26:52and
26:53you
26:53have
26:53an
26:54asset
26:54which
26:55is
26:56in
26:56lira
26:56and
26:57suddenly
26:57the
26:59burden
26:59of the
26:59debt
26:59has
27:00doubled
27:00that
27:01led
27:02to
27:02the
27:02collapse
27:03of Calvi
27:03scheme.
27:05If
27:05things
27:06continue
27:06this
27:06way
27:07there
27:07was
27:07a
27:07real
27:07risk
27:08that
27:08Calvi
27:08could
27:09lose
27:09control
27:10of
27:10the
27:10bank
27:10the
27:11chairmanship
27:12of
27:12bank
27:12Ambrosiano.
27:13He knows
27:14that if
27:15someone
27:15like
27:15Roberto
27:16Rosone
27:16his deputy
27:17gains

27:19shell
27:20gains
27:20and
27:20he'll
27:21be
27:21finished.
27:22So
27:22that's
27:22when
27:22he
27:22starts

31:14really
31:14Jeff
31:15was
31:15absolutely
31:16amazing
31:17he had
31:17an
31:17encyclopedic
31:18knowledge

31:27When I
31:28first started
31:29to get
31:29into it
31:30I thought
31:30long and
31:31hard about
31:32what I
31:33could do
31:34how I
31:35could
31:35kind of
31:35use
31:36the
31:36scientific
31:37knowledge
31:37I had
31:38to help
31:38forensic
31:39science
31:40is all
31:41about
31:41physical
31:43evidence

31:44for
31:45tiny
31:46traces
31:46of
31:47material
31:47or
31:47marks
31:48I was
31:50very keen
31:50to look
31:51at the
31:51items
31:51that were
31:52available
31:53and that
31:53the original
31:53scientists
31:54had examined
31:55and they
31:55had notes
31:56on them
31:56and there
31:57were people
31:57I could
31:57talk to
31:58about it
32:00They had
32:00compared
32:01the five
32:02stones
32:03or part
32:03bricks
32:03that had
32:04been
32:04recovered
32:05from his
32:05pockets
32:06with similar
32:07bricks and
32:08stones
32:08on a
32:08building
32:08site
32:09fairly
32:09near
32:10to
32:10Blackfriars
32:10Bridge
32:11and they
32:12decided
32:12that
32:13these
32:14items
32:14had
32:15come
32:15from
32:15that
32:15building
32:16site
32:18I also
32:19had a
32:19look at
32:20the items
32:20that had
32:21been examined
32:21originally
32:23One of
32:24the watches
32:25was a
32:25wristwatch
32:26that was
32:27very badly
32:28corroded
32:28The other
32:29one
32:30a pocket
32:31watch
32:31wasn't
32:32so badly
32:33affected
32:33you couldn't
32:34see that
32:34water
32:35had flooded
32:35into it
32:37Under
32:38Blackfriars
32:38Bridge
32:39the water
32:40sort of
32:40rushed
32:40either side
32:41of the
32:41supports
32:42as the
32:42tides
32:43were coming
32:44in and
32:44out
32:46But you
32:47also had
32:47the wash
32:49created by
32:49passing river
32:50traffic
32:51which could
32:51raise the
32:52level of
32:53the river
32:53locally
32:54by about
32:55two or
32:55three feet
32:56a night
32:56So the
32:58less badly
32:59damaged
32:59watch was
33:00probably in
33:00an upper
33:01pocket
33:01and the
33:02wristwatch
33:03was probably
33:03on his
33:04wrist
33:04which would
33:04have been
33:05underwater
33:06at a certain
33:06period of
33:07time
33:07and it
33:08had stopped
33:08at 1.52
33:10which might
33:11have been
33:11important
33:13I was
33:14particularly
33:14interested in
33:15the shoes
33:15because they
33:16could reflect
33:17some of the
33:18last things
33:18Calvi had
33:19walked over
33:19including for
33:20example the
33:21stones on
33:21the foreshore
33:22the scaffolding
33:23you'd have to
33:24walk along
33:25or up the
33:26scaffolding
33:26and I
33:28needed some
33:28help from
33:29a forensic
33:29chemist
33:30who's a
33:30specialist
33:31and footwear
33:32and marks
33:32in footwear
33:33and the
33:33marks footwear
33:34makes
33:36We were
33:37interested in
33:38paint because
33:39some of the
33:39bars of the
33:40scaffolding had
33:41yellow and
33:42green paint
33:43on it
33:43and so
33:45the soles
33:46and the lower
33:47parts of the
33:47uppers would
33:48have been
33:48of great
33:48interest
33:51This was
33:52an incident
33:53about which
33:54there were
33:55still questions
33:56to be answered
33:58The framework
33:59I constructed
34:00consisted of
34:01thinking about
34:02the routes
34:03by which
34:04Calvi could
34:05have got
34:06on the
34:06scaffolding
34:07and I
34:08decided there
34:09were probably
34:09four main
34:10routes
34:11two suicide
34:12routes
34:12and two
34:13murder
34:13routes
34:14and these
34:15were the ones
34:16that I was
34:16going to focus
34:18on.

34:37Marchinkus faces
34:38his greatest
34:39crisis to date
34:40when he loses
34:41his ally
34:41at the Vatican
34:43Obviously
34:43this is a
34:44cause for
34:45concern
34:45for
34:46Marchinkus'
34:48consolidated
34:48position of

34:49within the

34:51Everything

34:58confidently
34:59expected

35:18this man

35:24He's
35:24known as

35:26He seems
35:27like a

35:33probity
35:36Things were
35:36not looking
35:37good
35:37for Marchinkus
35:40And then
35:41after 33
35:42days
35:43there was
35:44a scandal
35:45that wracked
35:46the church
35:47A faithful
35:48nun
35:48would bring
35:49him a
35:49cup of

35:51He failed
