00:00Previously on A Family Business.
00:02I understand how you would like to do business, but guess what?
00:05You do it this way or no way.
00:07My name is Sonya Norwood, the mother of Brandy and Ray J.
00:13It's not a good look for us to be like always...
00:16Call my mom?
00:17Call my mom.
00:18The way my mom handles business is very aggressive.
00:21We want people to want to work with us and not be intimidated by what we come with.
00:26In this day and time, eating people alive ain't it?
00:29No.
00:31Shae!
00:32Shae is my best friend.
00:35She can be very over the top, but she's an awesome friend.
00:39You work out?
00:40No.
00:40You look like you work out.
00:42You know what I'm saying?
00:44You so buff and stuff.
00:55The comedy.
00:58Yeah.
00:58You got something better?
00:59Yeah.
01:00A Grammy.
01:00Brand.
01:01Ray.
01:01Cut the crap.
01:03We should lose the fights.
01:04This family's about love.
01:07No, we keeping the fights.
01:09Let's try it again.
01:09All right.
01:11The fights.
01:12The fans.
01:13The fans.
01:14That's the business.
01:15The business of family.
01:19Yeah.
01:28I'm going to bring the chair back down.
01:32There you go.
01:35Come on.
01:36I know.
01:36I did that earlier the other day and you laughed.
01:39Yeah.
01:39Mom called us in for a family meeting this morning.
01:42But before we get started, I just want some girly time with her.
01:45She needs to discover that softer side within herself.
01:49And if she's not going to do it, I'm going to do it for her.
01:52He's so pretty, Mom.
01:53Thank you, Bri.
01:54You give me hope.
01:56If you 60-something looking like this, I mean, I have hope, honey.
02:02I am.
02:02Are you ready now?
02:03Okay.
02:04Wait.
02:04Come on.
02:05Look up.
02:07All right.
02:08Okay.
02:09You look cute.
02:11The whole purpose of calling the family meeting was to try to get Brandy and Ray to get into
02:16the mode of doing business in a way that they don't normally participate.
02:21It was important to make an attempt to get them to a place where we can all sit down and
02:28get on the same page.
02:30What's up, B?
02:32You good?
02:32Yeah.
02:32Your leg's ready, though.
02:33But you got your breakfast.
02:34Bacon and egg?
02:35Yeah.
02:36Yeah, that's the problem.
02:37Stopping to get something to eat.
02:38Don't bring nobody else nothing.
02:40The whole purpose of this office space was to give you and Ray a business setting where
02:46you guys can now participate more on a business level.
02:49Mm-hmm.
02:50I mean, this is your meeting.
02:53You know, I'm just, you know...
02:54Controlling it.
02:57Anyway, so the first thing that we want to talk about is a reception for the opening
03:02of the office.
03:03What you mean, like a party?
03:04Yeah, sort of like a party.
03:05Yeah, like a party.
03:05All right.
03:06Well, you know.
03:07Let me know.
03:08You know, I'm the queen of parties.
03:10So how many...
03:10I can pack this place out.
03:11So how many...
03:11You the queen of parties?
03:12You know I'm the queen of parties.
03:13Yeah, you are.
03:14Don't trip, dude.
03:15I throw way better parties than you.
03:16Don't even...
03:17No.
03:18With no help.
03:19No invitations, nothing.
03:20Just a blast on my email and I'll have this whole place...
03:23You're the winner of your story.
03:24Heck yeah.
03:24Okay, so let's talk about you guys and your projects.
03:27Projects.
03:27Music projects.
03:28We got all that.
03:29I need you guys to start thinking about that.
03:30We got all that.
03:31Okay.
03:31I mean with Rodney and...
03:33The first album I did with Rodney Jerkins was Never Say Never and it went five times platinum.
03:39And now he's one of the biggest music producers in the world.
03:42Our recent work that we've done together, which was my last album called Human, was not successful.
03:48And since then our relationship has been kind of shaky.
03:52You are talented.
03:54You can sing your ass off, dude.
03:56And to me, Rodney Jerkins better give you his best work because he did not give me his best work
04:01on Human.
04:02Wait a minute.
04:02I didn't even realize it was still a big deal with B and Rodney like that.
04:07I didn't even know.
04:08No.
04:09And that's all I got to say.
04:10He better bring it on this album or you tell him to kick rocks with an open toe shoe.
04:16Kick rocks with an open toe shoe.
04:18I'm serious.
04:20There are other things that we need to talk about.
04:22A couple of things that's happening this week we need to talk about.
04:25We need to address.
04:26One is Brandi's performance with Timbaland.
04:30Timbaland is one of the most successful producers in today's game.
04:34He's one of my favorites and there is a chance that he's going to be producing my next album.
04:40But that deal is not yet locked down, but I'm really looking forward to it.
04:43Are we going to sign with Timbaland or what?
04:45Like let's really like decide what that's going to be.
04:48Timbaland, yes.
04:49I agree.
04:49I agree.
04:52You about to do the show with Tim, right?
04:54That's what you do.
04:55Oh.
04:56It's cold.
04:57It's cold, I know.
04:58Just talk to Timbaland and then after that let's come back and let's talk about it again.
05:01But don't just X Tim out like that.
05:03He really loves B and he cares about the project.
05:05He does.
05:05And he wouldn't want to work with her and everything, but we just need a schedule.
05:08He was the only one out of anybody that supported Brandi when she wanted to rap.
05:12He opened his album up for Brand and he let her be creative on his joint.
05:16And we appreciate that, Ray.
05:16So we should respect that and give him a little bit of time.
05:19Talk to Tim and say, look, we're not moving without you, but you know we got to move.
05:23Let's move forward.
05:24Let's stay focused.
05:25Let's work hard.
05:26Let's do it.
05:26Let's make all this stuff happen like we can.
05:28That's the final statement, Pops.
05:30All right.
05:31R&B on three.
05:32One, two, three.
05:33R&B.
05:34That is so corny.
05:41What are you up to tomorrow?
05:42Um, I don't know.
05:44Whatever you want to be up to.
05:46You had a meeting with Rodney?
05:47Oh, yeah.
05:48No, I got it.
05:48Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:50I can't even front.
05:51I feel a little weird about that.
05:53Come on, B.
05:54You got it.
05:55It's still, like, it is still bothering me.
05:57Like, I listen.
05:58B, stop it.
05:59Are you for real?
05:59I'm so serious, dude.
06:01Like, I'm not playing.
06:03Like, I feel like some of the things that has happened between me and Rodney has been personal.
06:07The last album, Human, how he didn't put his all into that album, that was a personal thing for me.
06:12So I just want to make sure you going into this deal with him and going into the studio with
06:20him, that you make sure he gives you the best work.
06:24You know what kind of music me and Rodney make.
06:27Like, why would you want to take that away from me?
06:29I'm not trying to take that away from you, but this is the thing.
06:30So why you feel sarty about that?
06:32You know what kind of chemistry Rodney and I have, too.
06:35Absolutely.
06:35But on some personal issues, he doesn't deliver.
06:38All we want to do is tell a story to the world.
06:40Then tell the story right.
06:42That's all I'm saying.
06:42Because I don't want the same thing that happened to me to happen to you.
06:45That's all I'm saying.
06:46I can get over the fact that you're working with Rodney.
06:48And I know one of these days, I don't know when, me and Rodney will be cool.
06:53But I'm saying to you, if he's not going to give you the best work and the best album, there's
06:57no need to do a deal with him.
06:59I'm shocked at how over the top Brandy is about this.
07:04Rodney and Brandy have Grammys, sold over 10 million albums together.
07:07This is brand new to me.
07:10And it's not making any sense to me right now.
07:14And I'm trying to understand.
07:15Come on, Ryan, come in.
07:16You can hear this because you were part of this deal, too.
07:19I'm just saying to you, I don't want Rodney to do the same thing that he did to me to
07:24Ray.
07:25Which was go in purposefully and not do his best.
07:28Yeah, but Brandy and Rodney have had the greatest chemistry together.
07:32And I think that that's worth a conversation.
07:34Some of the best music in history.
07:36One of the biggest records of all time.
07:38I think that's worth amending a relationship, business-wise.
07:41Personally, whatever y'all feel, that's something else.
07:43And I think it's worth taking another shot at changing the sound of music again.
07:47Yeah, I do.
07:48I'll think about it.
07:50Need an adjourn.
07:52This whole Rodney Jerkins thing really weighs me down.
07:56Well, don't feel bitter about it, Brandy.
08:00I don't like arguing with my brother.
08:02Like, that stresses me out.
08:04So, I send Shay a text because I want to get things off my chest of what happened.
08:09Love you, B.
08:12All right.
08:17Shay's always there for me.
08:19You know, she really knows how to put things into perspective.
08:21And besides, she has something that she wants to talk to me about, so we decided to go get some
08:26fresh air and go on a hike and have girl talk.
08:29When we're done with this trail, our butts are going to look amazing.
08:32Why are you walking like you're on a catwalk?
08:34I am?
08:35You're switching.
08:36You're throwing your hips.
08:37So, now that I'm out here.
08:39Okay, listen.
08:39We got to challenge ourselves.
08:41Okay, ready?
08:43On your mark.
08:43Go all the way up, Shay.
08:44All the way up.
08:45Got you.
08:45On your mark.
08:47Get set.
08:48Go.
08:48Woo!
08:50You go, girl!
08:54I'm coming!
08:56Walking up the hill, I realized, after three minutes, Runyon Canyon was a terrible idea.
09:02I've never known that L.A. had this other than, like, shopping and smog and valet parking.
09:07Who knew?
09:08You know?
09:10Shopping, smog, and valet parking.
09:12Now that I'm here, it's weird to be back and I feel like I'm starting over.
09:16Like, all over again.
09:17Like, I want to start a new career.
09:22I want to, like...
09:23Really?
09:23I do.
09:24Like, if I'm going to be here...
09:25What do you want to do?
09:26I was talking to your mom a few days ago and she had mentioned, like, certain things and
09:30qualities that she saw in me.
09:31And so, I started thinking, like, you know, maybe I could be, like, a really good manager.
09:36You could definitely be a good manager.
09:38But, like, what makes you want to be a manager, though?
09:41Like...
09:41With everybody, I'm always the one that makes things happen.
09:44I'm the ones that make the calls.
09:45And if I've got to cuss somebody out, I'm going to cuss them out.
09:47If I've got to go hard, I'm going to go hard.
09:49And I just really think that for my personality, it's a good fit.
09:52I think I would do well.
09:53You feel like you're, like, a take-care-of type of person.
09:56Oh, my gosh.
09:56I'm going to take charge and take care of it.
09:57I'm a leader.
09:58And I don't know if I'm great at it, but I'm willing to try.
10:00You're great at it because you've already been sort of like a manager.
10:03You've already been, like, in charge of people in the corporate world.
10:05Yeah, I'm in charge of folks.
10:07Yeah, you're in charge of folks.
10:08Hiring and firing people.
10:09I will fire somebody.
10:10In a minute, honey.
10:11In a hot minute.
10:12I mean, you?
10:13What?
10:13You want to get fired?
10:14That's me.
10:16I'm not firing.
10:16Wow.
10:17I want to find something when I just wake up.
10:20I love what I do and something that I'm good at and my personality could be used.
10:24Mm-hmm.
10:24Do you think your mom would, like, take me serious and, like, really do it?
10:27Totally.
10:27Be good.
10:28Yeah, I'm going to call her.
10:29Like I think.
10:29Call her.
10:31Call her.
10:31Call her.
10:32I don't have my phone.
10:33You're in luck.
10:34I've got my handy Blackberry.
10:36When did you get a Blackberry?
10:37Listen, honey, I was keeping my phone.
10:38The new one.
10:39Well, you know, I had to upgrade, honey.
10:41L.A., you've got to have the finer things in life.
10:44Yeah, ma'am.
10:45Mom, it's me.
10:47Um, Shay and I just decided to sit down and have a conversation just about her really wanting
10:53to work with you, just being a manager and, yeah, I think it'll be good for you guys
10:59to sit down and talk.
11:02Okay.
11:03All right, I love you.
11:04I love you too, Sonia.
11:06Okay.
11:07All right, bye.
11:08What'd she say?
11:09She said she's going to think about it.
11:10She actually sounds like she likes the idea.
11:13Score.
11:14We're business partners.
11:15Please, I need to leave this place.
11:17Is it too much?
11:18Yeah, the bugs are crazy.
11:18They are not that bad.
11:20Bugs are too much.
11:22You didn't finish telling me about what happened with you and Ray.
11:25Ray and I kind of got into it.
11:27Oh, no.
11:28Which is hardly ever.
11:30Why?
11:31Just over the whole Rodney thing.
11:33Yeah, that's the thing is that sometimes you have to separate the business from the emotion.
11:38I know.
11:38And I'm having a difficult time doing that.
11:41So, I need to work on just not being so emotional, but it's so hard because everything
11:46is pretty much from my heart, you know?
11:48You're an emotional person, but it doesn't come from a bad place.
11:51Yes.
11:51No, it doesn't.
11:52You would think by, you know, 30 I would know that.
11:55You're 31.
11:57And maybe I should talk to Rodney, you know what I mean?
11:59I think you should.
12:00Like, I mean, just clear the air and it'll give you guys a chance to both get whatever's
12:04on your chest, off your chest, and then when you're done, you're done.
12:07Right.
12:07And that's that.
12:08And then you can lock it, leave it, and move on.
12:10Right.
12:10You know?
12:12And I think it's important that you have closure and then move forward.
12:16Right.
12:22So, Ryan and I, we headed over to Rodney's studio.
12:26I'm not going to even mention anything about the Brandy thing to Rodney because we have
12:31a wonderful thing going on, and I don't want to mess that up.
12:45Rodney Jerkins is one of the biggest producers ever.
12:48Not only did he produce my sister's album, he also produced Michael Jackson's album, Whitney
12:53Houston's album, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, NSYNC.
12:58So, I've always wanted to get in the studio and do a whole album with Rodney Jerkins because
13:02now I know we can take it to the next level.
13:05Sky is not the limit with Ray J, Rodney, and the Norwood family.
13:10We're going to have the mids, we're going to have the ballads, we're going to have the
13:13ups, we're going to have a classic.
13:15Yeah, man.
13:16We're going to be musical.
13:18Yeah, we got to, man.
13:19I'm amped.
13:20I'm amped.
13:21We starting soon, right?
13:22Whenever you ready.
13:24Yeah.
13:25You know what I'm saying?
13:26Man, I'm amped, man.
13:27I'm amped.
13:28You know, I've been waiting for this for a long time.
13:31This is the biggest opportunity yet for me in music because now it's time for me to drop
13:36an album that impacts the world.
13:37And I know for sure Rodney Jerkins and I together can deliver.
13:42This is real good.
13:43I'm excited about this.
13:44And I think if the business stays over here and our creative is moving, we're going to
13:48be straight.
13:49We're going to make that work.
13:50Yeah.
13:50And I know when we put this stuff together, it's going to be crazy.
13:53Like with me, you got Ryan, I got Moms is going to be in the forefront.
13:58Okay, hold.
14:00What you mean Moms is in the forefront?
14:03If I'm, if me and you knocking out the creative and then Moms, you know, from our end could
14:08still, you know, be pushing the business and, you know, staying in touch with everybody
14:11and making sure things move right from our end.
14:14That's, that was, that was my vision.
14:19Yeah.
14:19Yeah.
14:20All right.
14:20Let me, let me, let me.
14:22All right.
14:22So listen, me being part of this project is important that, you know, I'm able to lead
14:29us in the right direction.
14:30When it comes to us to take the music and go to the record companies and go to the executives
14:36in charge, I can't have your mom in the forefront.
14:39From all the meetings that I've taken already, everybody like, we love Ray J. We love Ray J.
14:44Yo, Sonya's involved, Sonya's involved.
14:47They like this.
14:51Coming up.
14:52So how you want to handle the Sonya situation?
14:54I'm not nervous, but I am a little uncomfortable.
14:57Moms is going to be upset.
14:58I'm going to be a little hot about that.
15:01And later.
15:02I love it.
15:03I brought Shay to the office so she can talk to my mom about working with R&D Productions.
15:07Sonya, this office is perfect for me, but I need some pictures of me in here.
15:10I know I'll be, uh-oh, you about to get me already.
15:12Oh, Lord have mercy.
15:14Help me, G.
15:20When it comes to us to go to the record companies, I can't have your mom in the forefront.
15:25So I'm in a meeting with Rodney right now.
15:26We coming up with the plan and how we going to structure the album.
15:29And then he tells me that he doesn't want to work with Sonya.
15:33From all the meetings that I've taken already, everyone said the same thing.
15:37Like, yo, Sonya's involved?
15:39Sonya's involved.
15:40I'm like, they like this.
15:41For real.
15:42All right, going into the meeting, like, I'm thinking Ray J and Rodney, we cool.
15:46The only thing I'm going to have to probably deal with is the Brandi Rodney situation coming up.
15:50I had no clue that I was going to have to deal with the Rodney-Sonya situation.
15:54If she's involved, then we not doing nothing with this.
15:58And so that puts me in a weird place because I got relationships that I bank on.
16:04Yeah.
16:04And I got family.
16:05I got kids to feed now.
16:07I got a wife.
16:08I got a house.
16:08No doubt.
16:09You feel what I'm saying?
16:10Like, I respect Sonya.
16:11I think she's a genius.
16:12I remember her being on the phones for one wish.
16:15No doubt.
16:16I remember going to the house and seeing her.
16:18She was pushing their joint with us.
16:19I understand it.
16:20She gets the hustle.
16:21She understands that.
16:22But as far as what we're trying to do and what we're trying to go, that needs to be addressed.
16:27I'm ready.
16:28I got the music to play for you.
16:29I got some tracks.
16:30No doubt.
16:30We ready to go, but we have to go in this together.
16:33It's RJ and RJ.
16:34It's Ray J and Rodney.
16:35You know what I mean?
16:36We got to go together.
16:37We got to work this out.
16:39That's what I'm thinking.
16:40Like, I don't want to just quickly, like, okay, my mom's out of here.
16:44Because I don't roll like that.
16:46Like, I'm super loyal to the camp.
16:48I just want to make sure that we can all come to an agreement together where Rodney and
16:55I can still move forward and my team and his team is still happy.
16:59Like, my thing is to have Ray J do a real album.
17:01And I know Sonya wants the same thing.
17:03I'm done.
17:04I can't do it.
17:05I just can't.
17:06I can't risk my relationships based on, because when I talk to the people, I'm selling
17:10it on us.
17:11And I know what the response was, so that's what it got to be.
17:27Look at this.
17:29This is hot.
17:29Oh my goodness.
17:30This is so nice.
17:31This is hot.
17:31And, you know, of course it looks better, but I don't know what they're doing in the studio.
17:34Why are there only two fish in here?
17:36I know.
17:36The bowl.
17:37I brought Shay to the office today so she can talk to my mom about working with R&B Productions.
17:42And I think it's going to go quite well.
17:44So this is my office.
17:46I love it.
17:47Look at my office.
17:49I mean, your office.
17:51Get off of Twitter.
17:52But I wasn't following Serena.
17:54Okay, but get off of Twitter.
17:55How you doing Shay?
17:56This is what I think should happen, ma.
17:58This is what I think should happen.
17:59I think we should put, like, I can have a smaller desk over here.
18:03Or, you know, we can get me a lounge over here.
18:05I don't want to share office already.
18:07No, no, no.
18:07I get a lounge to the right.
18:09You know, table.
18:11No.
18:11Coffee cups.
18:12And Shay can have a desk.
18:13But I'm going to need me a little couch or whatever right here.
18:16And I can be on my laptop.
18:18Because, come on, let's be serious.
18:19Am I really going to do some work over here?
18:20Exactly.
18:20I think this is such a beautiful view.
18:22Sonya, this office is perfect for me.
18:24You can keep these up, but I need some pictures of me in here.
18:27No.
18:27I want to work for you, Sonya.
18:28I can do this.
18:29It would be an honor to work for such an esteemed woman in the business.
18:34I know I'll be, uh-oh, you about to get me already?
18:36Oh, Lord have mercy.
18:38Help me.
18:39Help me, Jesus.
18:40First of all, I like Shay.
18:42You know, she's very energetic.
18:44She's very intelligent.
18:46And I know that Shay could be a very big asset to some of the projects that we're doing.
18:52And I would love to keep her around.
18:54First of all, I realize that you've come from the corporate world.
18:57You've got all these degrees and everything, and that's all great.
19:00But you will have to start from the bottom up.
19:03What's the bottom?
19:04Shay, as with anyone her age, has a lot to learn.
19:08Shay, Monday morning.
19:10When you say morning, you mean like 11, 30?
19:1310 o'clock.
19:1410.
19:15Right here.
19:16I got a job!
19:19Mom, Shay.
19:20Yeah, I think Shay has the right attitude for this job.
19:22We're having a reception tomorrow night.
19:24Can you bring a few guests?
19:25Can I bring some menses?
19:27Are you serious?
19:28I mean, I'm just saying.
19:29Please don't bring that dude from Long Beach.
19:31Wow!
19:32Did you just do that?
19:34The rapper from Long Beach.
19:35Good job.
19:36Leave him where he sits.
19:38Leave him where he sits.
19:44Is the turkey burger good?
19:45It's very good.
19:46Let me get the turkey burger.
19:47All right.
19:49Bonnie has some concerns, man.
19:52I know what he was saying.
19:54Yeah.
19:55We all know what he was saying.
19:57You know, mom's just going to be upset.
19:59Sonia really loves to be in the forefront of stuff she wants, because she just wants to
20:04protect and make sure everything is right.
20:06I am a little uncomfortable in telling my mom this, because I know how passionate she
20:12is about my projects, and I don't want to hurt her feelings.
20:16I want my mom around on this project, but she has to let me be in the forefront.
20:22Also, you got to tell Brandy to calm down.
20:25Yes.
20:26And be just nice and cool and be professional in that office that we in.
20:30We'll be good.
20:31She understands the business side, too.
20:33Even though Brandy gets emotional about certain things, we'll be good.
20:37So how you want to handle this Sonia situation?
20:39I'm going to sit down, talk to her about it.
20:41You want me to be there?
20:43Or you kind of want to do it alone?
20:46Like, I don't know what the hell she's going to do.
20:48I'm going to talk to her at all.
20:55Coming up, may you rest in peace, Mr. Fish.
20:59Ryan?
21:04Wow.
21:04And later.
21:05I talked to Roddy today, and he wanted to make sure that he wanted to make,
21:11because I'm trying to say it, Roddy.
21:12Just say it.
21:12They had some concerns about working with you.
21:16What?
21:34First day.
21:38Hey.
21:41Ryan?
21:46What's up?
21:47I don't want to sit here.
21:49Well, listen, you've got to start somewhere.
21:51No, Ryan.
21:52I went to college, and I'm not the receptionist.
21:55Now, I want to look at your office, because I want to change some things when I move in here.
21:58I bet you do.
21:59And I'm thinking that this color is a little drab for me, so I'm going to brighten it up some.
22:04Is that right?
22:04My picture's going to go right against this wall.
22:07Just take a seat.
22:08Take a seat and see what it feels like.
22:10Let me see how I look.
22:10Yeah.
22:11See what it feels like.
22:11How does it feel?
22:13Yeah.
22:13Whoa.
22:14Wait.
22:15How does that feel to you?
22:17It feels good?
22:18It feels like my office.
22:34I think that's Ryan's job.
22:37I'm just saying.
22:39He does plants and fish.
22:40Clearly, that's why all the fish are dead.
22:46For the dead, homies.
22:48May you rest in peace, Mr. Fish.
22:58Oh, my God.
23:00I got the fish.
23:02Oh, my God.
23:10I am a little uncomfortable in telling my mom this, because I don't want to hurt her feelings,
23:16first off.
23:17Mama!
23:19And I don't want her to think that I don't want her still working with me on this project.
23:24What's up, Ray?
23:25I had a meeting with Rodney.
23:27And?
23:27Yeah.
23:27And we talked about it.
23:29Mm-hmm.
23:29And, you know, I always keep it straight up.
23:33Yeah.
23:33With you and with anybody.
23:35And before I even go into it, I'm loyal to the team.
23:40You know that.
23:41You know I've always been loyal.
23:43I never tried to go outside of the box, and I never will go outside of the box.
23:47But I talked to Rodney, and Rodney was saying that he's excited about doing it.
23:53And, you know, of course, we had a lot of success with One Wish.
23:57You know, and he wants to partner up.
24:00But he wanted to make sure that the creativity was...
24:08He wanted to make...
24:09Because I'm trying to say it.
24:10I'm trying to say it right.
24:11Just say it.
24:12Huh?
24:12Just say it.
24:13I'm trying to say it right.
24:14No, don't say it right.
24:16Just say it.
24:20That he said he reached out to, you know, a few labels.
24:24And they were excited about working.
24:27But they had some concerns about working with you.
24:32What?
24:35Coming up.
24:36What's poppin'?
24:36How you doing?
24:37I just want to clear the air with Rodney.
24:39I just think it's the best thing for me to do.
24:41I kind of feel like I didn't get the best Rodney that you are.
24:44That's my fault.
24:45This is, um...
24:46This is gonna be interesting.
24:48You didn't let me get in the way I wanted to get in.
24:50You didn't want that commitment.
24:52And later...
24:52When you don't want to work with me, you obviously got something to hide.
24:56When you start doing straight-up business, they didn't like you.
24:59I am gonna be a mother hen until they bury me six feet under.
25:09I'm loyal to the team.
25:11But I talked to Rodney and Rodney was saying that he's excited about doing it, you know.
25:19But they had some concerns about working with you.
25:23What?
25:25They wanted to know where that was at.
25:29Rodney was excited about doing it, you know.
25:32But he wants to make sure that the creativity doesn't get overshadowed by you and, you know, by the business.
25:39I don't want to make it seem like Rodney doesn't want to work with you.
25:42Or this whole thing is pending on if you gonna work with me.
25:46Because he knows for sure that I'm not budging without my mom being in the picture.
25:51You know, my mom has my back more than anybody.
25:53No matter what the situation is, like my mom's gonna be in this deal, it's just she's gonna play more
26:00of the background.
26:01Rodney has to respect that.
26:03Creativity is something I've never dived into when you guys do your projects.
26:08I never come to the studio.
26:09I never, I wait for the music to be played to me.
26:13I don't ever ask for nothing.
26:14Why is it that it always bother people when it's business time?
26:19They don't want to deal with me.
26:21Or they, they don't want me to get involved.
26:24Or they rather deal with somebody else.
26:26My whole thing is I can very easily get along with anybody as long as you fare.
26:31If you, if you want to play hardball, I'll play.
26:33I know I have a reputation as a tough business woman.
26:36And I'm not surprised by what Rodney has said.
26:39If you don't want to work with me, I'm cool with that.
26:41I probably don't want to work with you either.
26:43I would rather be considered a tough business person
26:47than someone that you can walk over, disrespect, misuse, and abuse.
26:53Look, you have stepped to the plate, right?
26:56You know, and I have to say I'm so very proud
26:59because somehow or another all of these independent projects
27:03that we've done together, you know, have rubbed off on you
27:06in the business aspect where you've gone out and you've been hustling.
27:09I think it's the greatest thing for you and Rodney to work together.
27:12So you got to do what's in your best interest.
27:15I thought my mom would react way more over the top than she did.
27:19But you know what? That's my mom.
27:21And I know my mom has my back.
27:22You are my third eye.
27:25Okay.
27:26If Rodney doesn't want to deal with me in the forefront,
27:30I'm cool with that.
27:31I love you, Ray.
27:41I've been really thinking about the Rodney situation.
27:44So I sent him a text and asked if I could go and meet with him
27:48to talk to him about the situation.
27:49I just want to clear the air with Rodney
27:51so him and Ray can work in a good place.
27:54And I just think it's the best thing for me to do.
28:00Hey, hey, hey.
28:02Yeah.
28:04What's poppin'?
28:05How you doing?
28:06Good. How you?
28:08That's what it is.
28:10I like your hair because it's cute.
28:12It's your first time in the building?
28:13Um, it's my first time since it's become like the Dark Child studio.
28:17That's not good.
28:18It's not good, but...
28:20Um...
28:21But yeah, but...
28:24It's poppin'.
28:25I just came to talk to you just about, like, my brother.
28:30Rodney and I start talking and my heart is beating so fast
28:34because we haven't really talked in depth since the last album.
28:38So this is, um...
28:41This is going to be interesting.
28:43And I just want to make sure he gets the best Rodney that you are.
28:48You know what I'm saying?
28:49Because I kind of feel like on my last album, I didn't get that.
28:53How you feel like that?
28:54It wasn't as, like, creative and forthcoming as the other projects.
28:59Like, we've always had the chemistry with...
29:01But, oh, oh, oh.
29:03With anybody.
29:05That's my fault?
29:05I'm not totally blaming that on you.
29:07So you're saying that I wasn't 100% focused on the B-Rocker project?
29:13Not like how you have been in the past.
29:15So was you focused on the B-Rocker, Dark Child, creativity that we always had?
29:22Was you focused on that?
29:23I believe...
29:24Because I don't feel like that you was.
29:26At that time, you know, just coming back to the game and getting the second chance to put my music
29:34out there.
29:35I probably...
29:36My focus was probably all over the place because it was all about, you know, winning.
29:40And it was all about getting that second chance to put my music out there.
29:44Because the way I see it, I'm going to give you my view on it.
29:47Okay.
29:47I'm going to give you my view on it.
29:48I need the glasses.
29:49I can't see your eyes.
29:50That's all right.
29:51But let me give you my view on it.
29:52The difference that I saw in the last record, for my eyes, is that Brandy wasn't there.
29:59I had a studio, but one day it's like, oh yeah, I'm over here at Boom Boom Room with Black
30:06Elvis.
30:07Or I'm about to go to so-and-so studio with Brian Kennedy.
30:11Because the Brandy that I had on Never Say Never Full Moon was like, yo, I've rocked with Dark Child
30:17and that's what it's going to be.
30:19I can see how you can see it that way.
30:21But in my defense, like I just have to just say it because every time you've decided to work with
30:27me again, I've dropped everybody.
30:30And you know I have.
30:33Except for the last time.
30:35Except for the last time.
30:37I told you, you was at Boom Boom Room, you was at this.
30:39You didn't let me get in the way I wanted to get in.
30:42And you know what? And you know why?
30:44And I can understand the label.
30:45Because I felt like I didn't have the power to do that.
30:50And although I did have it, I didn't exercise it.
30:53But if you remember, Rocca, you chose to go with Epic.
30:57That was a Brandy choice.
30:59We didn't do it together.
31:00And you know why?
31:00We didn't do it together.
31:01That was the only...
31:02That was...
31:03And you were not really offering me anything at the time.
31:07You were not...
31:07Man, we talked in 03 or 04 about doing stuff, but you...
31:11Rodney, you know how up and down you are about things.
31:14I sat with your mom and I told her, I was like, I don't want to be just some hired
31:18producer anymore.
31:19That's not my thing.
31:20I don't want...
31:21I don't want to do that no more.
31:22And you didn't want that commitment to me.
31:25Right?
31:27Let me tell you something, Rodney.
31:29Yeah.
31:29You need to know this about me.
31:32I didn't believe in what we had.
31:35I didn't believe in it.
31:36It wasn't our best.
31:37It wasn't the same Rodney and Brandy.
31:41And I can tell that that bothered you a little bit.
31:44You know how we get jealous of each other when we work with other people.
31:47It's just some...
31:48I get jealous, you get jealous.
31:49It's whatever.
31:50I mean, we're married in music.
31:51It's just what it is.
31:52That's funny.
31:54I respect that.
31:54I mean, it is what it is.
31:56I respect that.
31:57I appreciate you coming over here and sitting down and having this conversation.
32:03I believe you.
32:04I think as far as feelings, it's resolved.
32:07But Rodney and I will always have unresolved issues until we get back in the studio.
32:13Have a good day.
32:14You too.
32:15Rodney and I can't make up in words.
32:17We have to make up in music.
32:18Can you swing by our R&B production party tonight?
32:21We're kicking it off like in our new offices and stuff.
32:24All right.
32:24I'm going to come through.
32:25Ray would love to see you too.
32:27Okay, cool.
32:27Okay, my mom.
32:28All right, thank you.
32:29All right.
32:30Coming up.
32:31Hi, Jamal.
32:32All of a sudden, it's Jamal Brown from the New Orleans Saints.
32:37You are a ass.
32:38He seemed like a really nice guy.
32:40Trying to think if I'm giving you my number two quick and later.
32:44This project is about you.
32:45I need to know that the focus is really there.
32:47You had the girls and the life of a young baller.
32:51You got that.
32:51But when it comes to being in that studio, you got to be focused.
32:55Playtime got to be over.
33:10Hey.
33:11Hey.
33:12What's up?
33:13Everything's good.
33:14Yeah.
33:15Reggie had a conversation with Rodney.
33:17His concern is same old, same old.
33:20Don't want to work with mom.
33:22Mom can't be in the forefront.
33:23You know what I got to say about that?
33:25To everyone who feels like that.
33:27What?
33:28So what and too bad.
33:30Well, they don't know you.
33:31No, they don't know me.
33:32No, they don't.
33:33The way that I see it, I am a very straight up person.
33:35When you don't want to work with me, you obviously got something to hide.
33:41I remember back in the day, all the person had to do to be a manager was to get a
33:47beeper on their belt and a cell phone.
33:49You know, cause back then, if you had a cell phone, you were big time.
33:52So they be walking around, you know, rocking around, talking, you know, yeah.
33:56Yeah.
33:57Like they doing deals and stuff like that.
33:59You know what I mean?
34:00Funny.
34:00And then along come you.
34:02And you like nonsense.
34:04You doing things straight.
34:05Business.
34:06Straight up business.
34:07Not all that, that janky stuff that they be doing.
34:10And when you start doing straight up business, they didn't like you.
34:13I am, I am going to be a mother hen until they bury me six feet under.
34:19I am their mother.
34:20And when I became their mother, I became their mother for life.
34:23I think that's a good thing.
34:24Did I lose a few because people didn't want to work with me?
34:26Of course I did.
34:27Now I'm at a point where I want to retire.
34:31I'm headed for retirement.
34:33Let's go back.
34:33I don't want to, I don't want to be in this business forever.
34:35This is the most runchiest business that exists on the face of the earth.
34:40There are people in this business whose purpose is to exploit people.
34:44Right.
34:45That's their primary purpose.
34:47There are people in this business to squeeze you for what they can do right now and they
34:51don't give a heck of where you are next year.
34:54Right.
34:54So don't think everybody hates you.
34:55Everybody don't hate you and everybody don't put you down.
34:59Because it's a lot of parents feel just like you feel.
35:02Probably so.
35:02And I hope so.
35:03I will let go to some degree, but there is no life for me without Brandy and Ray.
35:10That's what you got to understand.
35:12They, they keep the blood flowing for me.
35:15Say for instance, if somebody gave Ray J a choice or Brandy a choice, say look, here's
35:21X amount of money.
35:22This is the deal.
35:24We can make this happen for you right now.
35:26Yeah.
35:26This is, this is, we can make this happen, but we can't, you have to.
35:29Get rid of your mama.
35:30We can't deal with your mama.
35:31So what choice you think they going to make now?
35:34Uh, in some cases they made some choices without their mom.
35:37But how did it make you feel?
35:39You, I, this is a glory, listen, this is a glorious, this is a glorious situation.
35:44Because now I finally get to see a test to see whether what I've taught Ray works.
35:51To see if he's learned what I've taught him.
35:53And if he has, guess what?
35:55I can begin to slide away a little bit more now.
35:58Well, but promise me something.
36:00What?
36:00When you, when you, when we go to the, uh, when we go to the, the office party tonight.
36:04Yeah.
36:06That you let them shine.

36:51The cocktail party, it was crazy.
36:54Everybody is there.
36:55All of my friends are there.
36:56Ray's friends.
36:57It was just good to see how everybody responded to the office space.
37:00And I felt the potential of R&B that night.
37:03Definitely.
37:20All of a sudden, this big dude walks in and it's Jamal Brown from the New Orleans Saints.
37:27He went to the Super Bowl.
37:29He went to the Super Bowl.
37:30Then they won it.
37:31That's a plus.
37:32You know, has his own thing, you know, going on.
37:35He doesn't beat me for anything.
37:37You know, that's always good.
37:38This is the studio.
37:42This is where I need to be at.
37:45You rap?
37:45Yeah, nah, a little bit though.
37:47I rap too.
37:48I can rap better than you though.
37:50See?
37:50No, I don't think you can.
37:51Yeah, I can.
37:51I really don't.
37:52I don't want to have to embarrass you.
37:55You're going to the Super Bowl and everything.
37:57Let's just keep the excitement, you know?
37:59I don't know what the booth looks like.
38:01A while back, Flo invited me to the Grammys and it didn't happen because of business reasons.
38:06And, you know, I kind of fell down about it.
38:09But now, I'm being open to even letting somebody take me to lunch.
38:14So, Jamal, he seemed like a really nice guy.
38:17And he's a big dude.
38:19I kind of like big dudes like Paul.
38:21You know, big dudes.
38:23I'm trying to think.
38:24I'm trying to think if I can give you my number too quick.
38:27Just because you play for the safe don't mean that you can have my...
38:31No, no, I'm a good boy though.
38:34You a good...
38:35Yeah, that's what they all say.
38:40What's up, boy?
38:41You good?
38:42Thanks for coming.

38:45You know, I heard Brandi talk to Rodney and everything's supposed to be cool.
38:49Hey!
38:50Sonia!
38:50What's up, Rodney?
38:52Oh, no.
38:52Sonia, Sonia.
38:54What's up, Sonia?
38:55Oh, everything is nothing.
38:57For the time being, everything is cool with Brandi, Moms, and Rodney.
39:01I'm happy.
39:03This feels better in my , man.
39:05It's hot in there.
39:08How did it go here?
39:09It went well.
39:10It did?
39:10Okay.
39:11Like I told you, I respect Brandi.
39:12I respect Moms.
39:13I respect the whole Noah family.
39:15But I know this project is about you.
39:18Absolutely.
39:19You know what I'm saying?
39:19I think the thing I need from you though, is I need to know that the focus is really there.
39:23Like, I feel it.
39:25Like, I feel the passion.
39:26I feel like you got the confidence.
39:27You know, I just feel like playtime got to be over.
39:31You know, you had the girls and the life of a young baller.
39:36You got that.
39:37But when it comes to being in that studio, you got to be focused.
39:41Like, for real.
39:42Like, I don't need to get, I don't want to pick up the phone and you like,
39:44you know, RJ, I can't make it and I got to go to this club.
39:47I know you got to get your money.
39:48No doubt.
39:49But I'm serious about this and I need you to be serious.
39:51Nah, I appreciate you.
39:53Absolutely.
39:53For real.
39:54All right.
39:54You know what I mean?
39:55All right.
39:55Let's go.
39:56All right.
40:03Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
40:06Everybody gather round, please.
40:08So, first of all, I, you know, I would like to personally thank all of you for coming
40:13out tonight because obviously you guys are all special to us because you got a personal
40:18invitation to come out.
40:19And we are a family.
40:22Secondly, I want to introduce to you two people that I love dearly.
40:27You have known them by television, by radio.
40:31Like these aren't our friends.
40:33Oh, yeah.
40:34I forgot.
40:35Sorry.
40:36Sorry.
40:36Wait.
40:37Can you give me a moment?
40:38Can I have something?
40:39Let me finish.
40:40Let me just finish.
40:41What I'm saying is, is that tonight they are free on their own to do their own thing.
40:48But don't get it twisted.
40:49Oh.
40:50I'm not far.
40:51Okay.
40:52I'm not far.
40:53Okay.
40:54I'm not far.
40:55Actually, you're right down the way.
40:56I'm right down the way.
40:58Okay.
40:58All right.
40:59So, that's all I got to say.
41:00We're going to make this 2010 R&B production.
41:03Yes.
41:03We're going to branch out and we're going to do our thing and we invite you to come
41:07to us.
41:07We know how to do it.
41:08Because that's who we are.
41:10Apple juices in the air.
41:11That's right.
41:12Our friends.
41:13That's right.
41:16We've been a family doing business with each other.
41:19I'd say as long as we've been a family.
41:21That's not new.
41:23What's new is, it's our children now that's taking the lead and shaping the future of our family.
41:28And I'd say that future is in good hands.
41:36Next week on A Family Business.
41:38Hey Ray J.
41:39Is there a Ray J?
41:39Hey.
41:40I got a closing door, y'all.
41:42What is going on?
41:43On the door.
41:44Ray's having a lap dance in his office.
41:46Call the security.
41:47I want them out.
41:48Mama, that wasn't it.
41:49No, it was.
41:50That wasn't nice, Mom.
41:52No, he's sitting there.
41:52No, he's sitting there and just do all of this over my head.
41:55I did.
41:55But that's something about his life.
41:57But that's something about his life.
41:58Don't tell me what I should do.
41:59Why is she yelling at me?
42:00I didn't even do anything.
42:01I mean, this is not even my stripper.
42:02I'm done and I'm out.
42:04She mad at me and Pops for not reacting.
42:07She's not mad at him though.
42:09Why the hell she ain't mad at you?
42:10Because it wasn't my fault.
42:12Sometimes life can strike a blow at your family that they haven't grown enough as a family to handle it.
