Thunderstorms intensified to severe levels across the Midwest on the evening of March 26 as supercells developed.
Transcript
00:00This is a live update from northeastern Indiana, very close to Fort Wayne right now, as we have active severe
00:06storms just to the west, but they are post-frontal.
00:09They are elevated above a shallow, stable layer behind the cold front, but they are dropping very large hail, including
00:15earlier across northwestern Indiana.
00:18Those are building further south as well and intensifying.
00:21Also, storms off to the east in Ohio, where tornado watches, in effect, have been severe worn to the west
00:27of the Cleveland area, as well.
00:29It's possible those storms could intensify and move off to the southeast with a low-end tornado threat.
00:34But we are watching this line of intensifying storms just off to the west, but we're also waiting for the
00:40potential of some storms to develop along the front, which you can see right here in northeastern Indiana.
00:45Some of the latest short-range model guidance shows explosive supercell development near the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, east into
00:53northwestern Ohio, and that could feed off of the warm, unstable air.
00:57We've got strong southwesterly winds out here, dew points of about 61 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures around 80 degrees.
01:05We had an attempt at some supercell initiation along the front earlier, but those are racing off to the east,
01:11and they're a little bit elevated right now.
01:12So we are waiting for surface-based supercell development in the northeastern corner of Indiana, and we may end up
01:19just retreating to those post-frontal hail producers, which are dropping very large hail,
01:24especially those that can get mesocyclones despite being elevated above that stable layer behind the cold front.
01:30They can still drop very large hail in excess of baseball size, which could be very destructive out there.
01:36So certainly stay tuned to those severe weather watches and warnings.
01:39The main threat is definitely hail with this event.
