Extreme meteorologist Dr. Reed Timmer reported from the ground as threats for hail, rain and even potentially tornadoes ramped up across the Midwest.
Transcript
00:00Severe weather watches are coming very soon from northern Illinois, northern Indiana, into Ohio as well.
00:07Right now it appears there could be a greater tornado threat further east and northeastern Ohio,
00:11where storms can interact with lake breezes off of Lake Erie.
00:15But it also looks like the better parameter space is back toward Indiana, maybe even near the Indiana-Illinois border.
00:21That's where the strongest low-level shear overlaps with the greatest instability.
00:26And we've got low to mid-60s dew points being analyzed here.
00:30Just to the south of the cold front.
00:32And the cold front is draped west to east right now.
00:35And there are loads of lift right now moving from west to east along the southern periphery of that jet
00:40stream.
00:40You've got a little bit of lift moving into Ohio.
00:43Also from southern Michigan near the Indiana border.
00:45That might peel off a few supercells as well.
00:48And also some strengthening storms to the south of Chicago that could organize into southeasterly moving supercells.
00:55Those southeasterly movers usually do pack very significant hail as well.
01:00And that's going to be the main threat today is baseball to softball-sized hail with any dominant supercell storms.
01:06But a tornado threat can certainly not be ruled out, especially with any of those dominant southeasterly moving supercells.
01:12Stay tuned to those severe weather watches and warnings.
01:15A pretty significant severe weather event, mainly very large hail, is about to begin.
