00:00Meanwhile, parents of children harmed by social media platforms celebrated a landmark U.S. verdict, saying they knew they harmed.
00:07The verdict could mark a turning point in the global backlash against their platform's perceived mental health harms to kids
00:14and teens more than two decades after the emergence of social media.
00:20Punitive damages for the companies will be decided next.
00:23The jury may consider whether Google or Meta's product caused the plaintiff's physical harm or whether the company has disregarded
00:30the health of other users.
00:32Judge Carolyn Kool said in court.
00:34Parents, no more looking away. This is not over. We know this is a long game.
00:39We're headed to D.C. with the evidence we have in hand and this verdict, and we're demanding safety protections
00:46and legislation to keep kids safe online from our legislators.
00:51Let's fix it. Big tech, us, let's make this world a better place.
00:55But parents, we need you to join in with us because it stops today.
01:00Big tech, your gig is over.
01:02Yep.
01:04But I'd really still like to see these companies, you know, do what's needed to design their platforms safely for
01:12kids now and in the future.
01:14And as we move on to AI, that's even more important because kids are dying from AI chatbots as we
01:19speak.
01:20And that's not okay either. So we need to pull them in or it's just going to be out of
01:24control.
01:26They will stop at nothing to keep these kids' eyes on the screen. And that's the message.
01:33No family is alone in this.
01:35Every kid with a cell phone, with any device, with a camera and connection to the Internet, is in danger,
01:43even if you're honest about their age.
01:46They do not care about these kids except for the money that they make for them.
01:51And if, you know, if social media was the gateway drug, AI is like the crack in heroin and it
02:00moves fast.
02:01And tech moves very fast and government does not.
02:04So they need to catch up because by the time we get legislation, this only, this is a victory and
02:09we all feel vindicated.
02:11But, like, until it has to be coupled with legislation because this could just be like, okay, this is just
02:17the cost of doing business.
02:19And then they go back to doing it. And we hope that that's not the case. So it has to
02:23be coupled with legislation.
02:24The jury found Google and Meta were negligent in design of both apps and felt warned about their dangers.
