00:00Brian, I got an email this morning from the NFL.
00:04Brian McCarthy is kind of...
00:06The NFL has a bunch of heads of PR.
00:12BMAC is chief NFL spokesman.
00:14He's about to top.
00:17I got invited to a video conference today
00:19to preview a meeting being held next week.
00:22The email reads,
00:23The NFL will hold a media briefing to preview the competition committee agenda
00:27in advance of the league's annual meeting.
00:29Okay.
00:30Virtual briefing will be held at 1130.
00:32Jeff Miller is the NFL VP of Player Health and Safety.
00:36Rich McKay from the Atlanta Falcons is the competition committee co-chair.
00:40And Walt Anderson, NFL officiating rules analyst.
00:43Why are they holding this meeting previewing rule changes?
00:46Because the league meeting technically starts Sunday.
00:50They're going to get down to business Monday morning in Arizona.
00:55All the owners will be there, as will head coaches and general managers,
00:59other folks too, including me.
01:04And all the hubbub about the rules committee last year,
01:08all anybody could talk about was the tush push.
01:10Yeah.
01:11This year, it's not even a consideration.
01:13No, it's not.
01:14Because like we, you and I both stated, if they just officiated that play properly,
01:24the Eagles wouldn't have an advantage.
01:26And last year, you saw they went away from using it sometimes.
01:30They got called for false starts and all that different stuff.
01:33So they didn't have that advantage anymore.
01:35So by calling it correctly, they had to go away from it.
01:39Now you got other stuff to deal with.
01:41Now they need to be consistent because you know they're going to come back this year
01:44and try it again and you'll see what happens.
01:48I agree with all that.
01:49I think it was officiated better.
01:51I think that was the right path anyway.
01:52And as much as I hated the tush push and its incredible efficiency,
01:58I also think you can't make a rule change just to hurt one team.
02:03Like that's just children crying over spilled milk.
02:07This one team is so good at something.
02:09But it wasn't to hurt the one team.
02:10It was the fact that that team was doing illegal stuff and they wasn't calling it.
02:15So it was all on the NFL.
02:16It was their damn fault.
02:18I agree.
02:20The only thing I would add to that is the retirement of Jason Kelsey made a big impact too.
02:26If you have a future Hall of Fame center on a play that is super important for the center
02:34to be the low man and to create some space and that dude retires,
02:38that's going to have an impact too.
02:40I also think Jalen Hurts didn't want to run as much.
02:42I think that was pretty apparent and take the physical beating that that play did provide.
02:45So of all the rules changes, tush push is off.
02:50Like there will be no giant tush push conversation, which I'm okay with.
02:55The rules that have been proposed, be that you can be judge a jury on these.
03:01Number one, the competition committee would like to permit the kicking team to declare an onside kick at any time
03:08during the game.
03:09Yes.
03:09Go for that.
03:10Definitely.
03:11I should have never got out of there.
03:12I should have never moved that.
03:13The only, my real, and I like that returns are a much bigger factor in the game.
03:18I think it's far more exciting for the play.
03:20I just hate the element of the surprise onside kick being legislated out of football.
03:26Yeah.
03:26But life's about compromises, man.
03:28I shouldn't have to say, hey, I'm about to run it.
03:30Right.
03:31No, if it's a part of the game, it's a part of the damn game.
03:33But now it kind of isn't, but they're, they're trying their best.
03:36They're, they're, I mean, this is a real, have your cake and eat it too kind of thing, but I'm
03:41glad they're at least allowing for it.
03:43Um, another one.
03:45So that's two votes.
03:46Yes.
03:47For onside kick at any point.
03:49Onside pick passes.
03:51Number two B.
03:53Yeah.
03:53Eliminate the kicking team's incentive to intentionally kicking the ball out of bounds when kicking off from the 50-yard
04:00line.
04:03Yeah, I agree with that.
04:04That's, that's like, eliminate their, don't, don't make it like an easier thing for them to do.
04:11I agree with that.
04:12That's, that's only after a personal foul on, like, the extra point.
04:17But like, when they kick it out of bounds intentionally, I think they get the ball at a lesser place
04:22than they would get it in some months.
04:24When they're kicking from the 50.
04:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:26That is, uh, that is some in the weed stuff right there.
04:29Yeah.
04:29Your average football fan has no idea what we just discussed for the last 40 seconds.
04:33But the people that are doing it, they know exactly what they're doing.
04:37And basically you're saying you're trying to circumvent the rules and get a better deal out of it.
04:43So we're going to stop that.
04:44And I agree with them.
04:45Number three, modify the kickoff alignment requirements for the receiving team players in the setup zone.
04:55Shouldn't the players be able to line up where they want?
04:57Well, no, no, that one, yes.
04:59I think, well, they're telling you they should be able to modify it.
05:02Right, right now, you have, everybody has to be in a certain position.
05:07Or you can, uh, what, a legal, uh, formation or whatever.
05:12And the two guys back deep, they had to be a certain place.
05:16I think, yes, that you should implement that.
05:20Okay.
05:21Yeah.
05:22Vote yes.
05:23Um, about this one.
05:25The last one.
05:26Number four.
05:27Four, okay.
05:28Allow league personnel to consult with on-field officials when considering disqualifications
05:33for both flagrant football acts and non-football acts without being called on the field.
05:38Okay, I, this is where I'm at with that.
05:40If the referees are supposed to be doing their job, let them do their damn jobs.
05:44Why do the league officials have to come in and say, hey, hey, don't, don't, don't throw
05:49him out the game or throw him out the game.
05:51You see what I'm saying?
05:52That's where I think the league now can sway games.
05:54And I don't, I don't, I don't like that.
05:57But what about scenarios where a guy punches somebody, a guy spits on somebody and the rest
06:03don't catch it?
06:05I think that's what they're, the non-football acts stuff.
06:09This, this is not necessarily what that is about.
06:11This is about, before you call that second one, where you're going to kick him out the
06:14game, I want to talk to you.
06:16See what I'm saying?
06:17Think about.
06:18Which I don't like that.
06:19Who got, um, when Deron Payne got.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Thrown out.
06:25If this rule's in place, maybe Amon Ra also gets thrown out.
06:28Well, if they see that, you call it, but this is about the disqualification after two.
06:34You know, if you get two flagrant fouls or whatever, you're out the game.
06:38But they, the league wants to talk to you to find out which player it's going to be.
06:44Like, you know, remember the thing that Stephen A been yelling about over the last few days
06:48about.
06:48There's one thing?
06:49Jalen Brown being thrown out the game that time.
06:51Yeah.
06:51I think.
06:53Well, you can't throw out the stars.
06:54If the stars do something stupid, they get thrown out the damn game too.
06:58Sure.
06:58So, you shouldn't be able to, you, if you punch me, didn't spit on me, you should, out
07:02the game.
07:03Regardless of who you are.
07:04Just because I'm a no-name dude don't mean it.
07:06If I go out there and I'm tackling you and I got a pill and you gave me a flagrant,
07:12which
07:12probably wasn't.
07:14And then later on, something else happened and you throw me out the game.
07:17Why is it okay for the guy that's, the 53rd guy to get thrown out and the first guy
07:20not to get thrown out?
07:21I mean, not to equate it, but on the world stage, the biggest moment I can remember in
07:29a World Cup in my life, maybe until this last one, the dude Zidane from France, who was
07:35the best and most famous player in the world in 2006, maybe 2010, remember he head-butted
07:41that Italy dude and they tossed him?
07:43Yeah.
07:43They should have.
07:44If you're, it doesn't matter how bright your star is, maybe you get a little more leeway,
07:48but at some point, if it goes down, you got to go out.
07:51See, so that, that, that one right there worries me because I think the league will dip their
07:57nose into it too much.
07:59Um, number five for one year only allow NFL officiating department to correct clear and
08:05obvious misses made by on-field officials that impact the game.
08:09In the event, there is a work stoppage involving the game officials represented by the NFL referees
08:15association.
08:16The league is telling you replacement refs are coming.
08:19We know they're not as good.
08:20They said, let us fix it from New York when we see something abhorrent.
08:23Well, no, because they're going to try to keep it going when they come back.
08:27How cheap are we being NFL?
08:30You make billions upon billions upon billions.
08:32They try to put, they try to put the rule change, put this into the rules because they
08:35know what they're about to do.
08:36You're going to try to put it in.
08:36You're going to try to put it in.
