00:00Okay, so the Lions signed Peyton Turner over the weekend.
00:07That's right, Peyton Turner, who has had an injury-riddled career,
00:14missed all of last season with a rib injury, four years with the Saints.
00:20He recorded 50 tackles, 11 for loss, five sacks, and 39 pressures
00:25across 31 appearances.
00:28So, significant injuries.
00:32That's putting it mildly.
00:34He has played four years in the National Football League.
00:37You mentioned he missed all of last year.
00:39Yep.
00:40First year, he played five games.
00:41Next year, he played eight games.
00:432023, he played two games.
00:462024, he played 16 games and had 21 total tackles under two sacks, as you said.
00:52That is not a lot of experience playing in the National Football League.
00:55But, Doug, he's got a frame.
01:00He's fit in this suit.
01:01He's Johnny Bravo, 6'6", 270 pounds.
01:04I mean, it's...
01:06I mean, that's what...
01:07This does nothing.
01:08But when we saw Marcus Davenport at practice, he looked the part.
01:14Yeah, Marcus Davenport certainly looked the part.
01:16You know, he also had a bit of a track record of...
01:22Oh, yeah.
01:23You know, not much of one.
01:24But, I mean, he had shown the ability to rush the passer.
01:26He had nine sacks and 16 games in 2021.
01:30But he's been hurt every year.
01:32Marcus Davenport has.
01:33But at least he actually got into games when he did play.
01:36And he hit the quarterback.
01:40Is that Peyton Turner...
01:41What?
01:44So, look.
01:46The totality of what's happened this offseason.
01:51They might be better at one position.
01:54They are better at one position.
01:56Center.
01:57Yes.
01:59I don't think they're better anywhere else.
02:01They're not.
02:03Offseason's not over.
02:04No.
02:05This has been a pretty Brad Holmes-friendly show.
02:10But as I've said a lot this offseason, what he has done has not been enough.
02:15Nor do I think it's been enough.
02:17And it's coming upon him to make the next great moves that puts him over the top.
02:22I'll give you another place where they've improved.
02:25Tight end.
02:26Okay.
02:28Adam Conklin, I think, is really good depth.
02:31He's better than the depth guys they have.
02:34And, look, we don't know if Laporte is completely healthy or not.
02:37But I would hope that by the start of the season that he is.
02:41And same thing with Brock Wright.
02:42So, Wright, Laporte, and Conklin, I think, is a pretty good tight end group.
02:47I like that.
02:48But you're right.
02:50Beyond the tight ends and the center upgrade, there's no upgrade.
02:56So, one position in particular is fascinating to me.
03:02I don't know if there's a bigger disconnect between a fan base and a competent front office.
03:10Okay?
03:11Because you can see what you want about Brad Holmes.
03:12Brad Holmes is no idiot.
03:13He's no idiot.
03:15In fact, he's a really smart football mind.
03:20But I don't know if there is a greater disconnect between a fan base and a front office, a competent
03:26front office,
03:27than what the fan base wants to happen at edge rusher opposite a hutch,
03:31and what the front office is doing at the position.
03:36Because, and again, they're not done.
03:39But their additions have been DJ Wonham.
03:46Who's not a pass rusher, but he's a defensive end.
03:49And Peyton Turner.
03:50Who's not available.
03:54Now, Wonham has a chance to be a useful player.
04:00And run support and your ability to be effective in the run game is a real thing.
04:07It's a real thing.
04:10But tell me where a competent front office and a fan base have seen a position more differently than what
04:18the Lions are doing
04:19and what many fans want them to do.
04:22Now, as a general rule, I will side with the front office more so than the fans or the media.
04:29Because they know the whole story.
04:31And, you know, there are people who work in the game their whole lives.
04:34And quite frankly, it is not a prerequisite by any stretch of the imagination to have two elite pass rushers.
04:42Most teams only have one.
04:45But there's a big difference between getting Max Crosby, which might be unrealistic,
04:49and that's that elite pass rusher, and adding Turner and Wonham, which is, I'm not going to say it's nothing.
04:57I'll say it's almost nothing.
04:59To me, it doesn't.
05:00I don't want to call Wonham a nothing add.
05:03He just might not add a lot in terms of pass rush.
05:05It's nothing in pass rush.
05:07As far as being a guy who can stop the run, okay, he can do that.
05:10But I would imagine that you can find a bunch of guys that if you tell them, we're not counting
05:14on you to stop the run,
05:15or it'd be a pass rusher, just be a run stopper, that you could probably find a bunch of guys
05:20to fit that mold.
05:22I think to the fans' credit and listeners' credit to the show, when the trade was going down with Max
05:31Crosby,
05:31and then it got erased and all that, there weren't many people saying, Lions got to get him.
05:37We talked about it.
05:38I would have liked to see the, then you saw the actual price being paid was two first round picks.
05:43I would have done it.
05:44But we didn't get much fan support for that.
05:47I think the fans moved on from thinking high of getting Max Crosby or Trey Hendrickson,
05:52and now it's shifted to get us a guy like a Cam Jordan or a Joey Bosa, or something that
06:01ilk.
06:02That's where we're looking now.
06:03We've set the bar way lower.
06:06Not that Cam Jordan wouldn't be a great addition, but it's no longer saying we got to get the guy
06:10that's going to be a $30 million a year pass rusher.
06:13And I think that's a credit to the fans and listeners for understanding this.
06:17But you talk about the gap.
06:20Yeah, the gap's massive because the way the Lions have operated and their answers are Peyton Turner and DJ Wanham
06:30as opposed to bringing back Al-Khani Muhammad and frankly, DJ Wanham, if that's what you wanted to do.
06:38Right.
06:38I don't understand why they're not doing it yet.
06:42Now maybe, again, they'll wait in the next week or so, or maybe it's right before, whatever.
06:47If they just add Cam Jordan at any point in time between now and the start of the season,
06:53then I won't care and I'll be like, that's awesome.
06:55Nice job.
06:55Yep.
06:56And the offseason's not over.
06:57But here's the disturbing tweet I mentioned from an insider.
07:00Justin Rogers did a nice job covering the Lions.
07:03Tweeted the following,
07:03there are probably more veteran signings coming, but the heavy lifting of free agency is likely done for the Lions.
07:12That's the end of the tweet.
07:16No.
07:19No, it shouldn't be.
07:21Well, what's, what's the $25 million in cap space for?
07:26It's, it's going to be for extensions in whatever way it is that the manipulate the cap and how the
07:32extensions go that way.
07:33And, you know, you may, you know, remember you heard last year, well, we had to save some money for
07:38the extensions because of, that we're going to give out after next year.
07:41That it'll affect the cap.
07:42Like, how does it affect the cap this year?
07:44Well, I don't know.
07:45Cap rules are very complicated and I, you know, and it is a real thing.
07:48Eventually.
07:49Yeah.
07:49You can work around the cap for a while.
07:51And I think what they're trying to do is to not have to cut any of their really good players.
07:56But in the process, are they basically saying, we're going to keep parading out the same product and try and
08:03win that way.
08:04Without talking about, with, with denying that there's a window.
08:08Because they don't like the word window.
08:09No, they don't like the word window.
08:10They don't like the word window.
08:10Well, and I think they're trying to keep the window open for as long as possible by locking up guys
08:14long term.
08:16But if you're doing it, but if you're only doing it with your own players.
08:21I mean, there could be some other things at play here.
08:23We'll get to that.
08:24It's, it's, yeah, but those players are going to be there.
08:26Most of them are young and should be here for a long time.
08:28Like so long that it's not even worth talking about it closing.
08:32But not to the point that I'm going to give the extensions now.
08:35I'm not even giving it.
08:36I'm not.
08:37Look, the guys you have to think about right now.
08:39Are Laporta and Branch.
08:41And I'm not giving either one an extension right now.
08:43If it's me, I'm not doing it.
08:44Are you?
08:44Not the injured guys, no.
08:45No.
08:46And when it comes to the fifth year guys.
08:49I'm not in any hurry to go give the running back or the linebacker an extension right now.
08:55Oh, and they can play the rest of this year.
08:57And then I pick up the fifth year.
08:58Well, you remember you said you don't get mad about stuff until after it happens.
09:02It's just when I see a tweet like that from somebody who's pretty dialed in that the heavy lifting is
09:07probably over.
09:09I feel like it can't be.
09:11Now, maybe Cam Jordan isn't considered heavy lifting.
09:14I would think of it as.
09:15I'd breathe a huge sigh of relief if they did.
09:17Carson Anderson, 97.1.
09:19We'll see you then.
