00:01Well, unfortunately, the team that I root for went down in the college basketball tournament yesterday.
00:07This was a tough one for me to watch.
00:08Number nine in the NCAA tournament, Iowa, beats number one, Florida, in Tampa.
00:14So much for that home cooking.
00:1773 to 72 Gators with 10.5-point favorites.
00:19Iowa hit a three-point shot at the end of the game.
00:23Alvaro Fulgarias, he was the one.
00:25Never going to forget that name.
00:27Hit a three with four seconds left.
00:28First-year head coach Ben McCollum, who used to be over in Division II, picks up a win and gets
00:33to the Sweet 16.
00:35What a great season it is for the Hawkeyes.
00:36McCollum talked about the experience of winning a Division II championship and just how that felt up against this game
00:42yesterday.
00:43You know, defending national champions, you know, on Division II, I was fortunate enough to win a national title.
00:49And then we actually got beat in the first round, which was pretty rough.
00:55But, you know, they got back to the one seed and had a spectacular season.
00:59Got a lot of respect for their program.
01:01As far as my guys go, you know, this is tough.
01:05You know, I mean, that's all it is.
01:06This is tough kids.
01:08They fight.
01:09They compete.
01:11You know, they stick with it.
01:12They just – they exemplify everything that we've wanted in Iowa basketball.
01:18They've established the foundation that we desperately needed and couldn't be any more proud of them.
01:25Obviously, a disappointing result for us tonight.
01:27Credit Iowa.
01:28Thought they played well, especially in the first half.
01:31Had us on our heels a little bit.
01:32I thought they were physically tougher than us in the first half and took a little bit for us to
01:36regain our footing.
01:37And then they got off to a good start in the second half and really proud of our guys and
01:41the way we fought.
01:43Obviously, came back and took the lead.
01:45Got up by as many as – I think we were up three or four at one point late in
01:51the second half.
01:51And just did a poor job executing on both ends in the last two minutes.
01:55I thought, you know, obviously on the last play, we wanted to take a foul to prevent them from getting
02:01off a three.
02:02And they got away from us.
02:03We weren't able to take it.
02:04And they knocked it down.
02:05So credit to them for that.
02:07And just a tough way to go out.
02:08But really proud of my group.
02:09Love these guys.
02:10They did a great job for us all year.
02:12Gaining the second one seed in a row.
02:15And a tough one for us to swallow.
02:17And, you know, we'll be thinking about this one for a while.
02:23Very tough season for Todd Golden and the Gators going down there.
02:26All right.
02:26Can we move on, please?
02:27Let's get to another team that may have busted your bracket yesterday.
02:31That's number four seed, Kansas.
02:33Some folks thought maybe they had a chance to win it all.
02:35Not so much.
02:36Guess who?
02:37Yep.
02:37That guy, Rick Pitino, back in the Sweet 16 yet again.
02:40St. John's beats Kansas 67 to 65.
02:43They didn't cover the short line here.
02:45Fourth different school.
02:46That's incredible that Rick Pitino has taken to the Sweet 16.
02:49Providence, Kentucky, Louisville, and now St. John's.
02:52In fact, one of the final plays of the game, Rick Pitino went through with the media,
02:56including a player who had done nothing throughout the game asking to get him the ball.
03:01It's the funniest thing I've ever been involved with.
03:04So we're going to run a play, but they got fouls to give, and Bells comes up to me and
03:11says,
03:11run power, which is a high back screen pick and roll.
03:15So I walk away.
03:16I said, okay, Powell.
03:17I walk away and said, wait a second.
03:20He hasn't scored a bucket, and he wants to run a play for himself.
03:25And then I'm thinking, as I'm walking, I said, but he's Bells.
03:30And not only did he do it, he went with his right hand.
03:34So I'm real proud of him because to want the ball when you haven't made a shot is unbelievable.
03:41So both of these guys had major impact in us winning tonight.
03:44I'm so happy for St. John's and the fans.
03:47We had great fans out here, and we get to go to D.C., and I'm just so jubilant, so
03:55happy for the fellas.
03:57We've taken it another step now.
03:58So it's just awesome, proud of our guys, and now it's just starting.
04:02The fun's just starting.
04:03The tournament is one thing that makes it so great is that it can be great, but it can also
04:09be cruel.
04:09And, you know, we obviously put ourselves in a position to play from behind the whole game
04:15and then really competed and played great down the stretch
04:19and just didn't finish what we had started down the stretch.
04:24But certainly disappointed, sad for our guys because they tried so hard.
04:30But, you know, just a tough afternoon.
04:38It's been a tough run for Kansas in the NCAA tournament as of late as they go down.
04:47Meanwhile, if you have Connecticut going to the Final Four, you're feeling pretty good right now.
04:51The number two seed, five-and-a-half-point favorites, beat UCLA 73-57 Alex Caravan with 27 points.
04:59And Dan Hurley, after the affair, says the team did exactly what they needed to to advance.
05:04You know, a program of UCLA's caliber, coached by, you know, not only Mick,
05:09who's one of the great coaches in the game, but just, you know, one of the best staffs too.
05:13And, you know, obviously we're fortunate, you know, that maybe their best player doesn't play in the game.
05:20And we get Silas back.
05:22And obviously Silas gutted it out before he asked minute restriction.
05:26He was around, it was 20, a little bit over that.
05:29But, you know, I just thought this game was all about, you know, Terrace's workman-like performance.
05:34You know, Braylon, you know, stepping up.
05:38Big-time performance as a freshman in a big spot.
05:41And then just the greatness of the man next to me.
05:43Just the, you know, should be celebrated at all corners of the media.
05:48And I know he's going to start, look, he's getting uncomfortable right now.
05:52But, yeah, I mean, this man's greatness and what he's done in college basketball the four years.
05:56I mean, like literally every outlet should be doing a story on this man and just his career in college.
06:04It's no one's been better in college sports the last four years in terms of being a winner.
06:10So thank you, Alex.
06:12Congrats to UConn.
06:13They were better than us tonight.
06:16Our guys gave the effort.
06:18We couldn't score the ball.
06:20Can't win.
06:21Can't score.
06:22Can't win.
06:23That's a lot of their defense.
06:26So you got to give them credit.
06:30And they get to play next week and we get to go home.
06:33So let's get to midnight.
06:36So let's bang out some questions.
06:39No questions for you, Coach.
06:40But UCLA going home pretty much when we thought they would.
06:43But he filled out a bracket for the tournament.
06:45Meanwhile, if you took Alabama moving on, good job.
06:4890-65.
06:48They defeat Texas Tech.
06:50Latrell Wrightsell had 24 points for Alabama.
06:54Unfortunately for Texas Tech, they were missing JT Toppin.
06:57He was out due to injury.
06:58Probably had a big factor in that one.
07:00And also Purdue took care of Miami.
07:0279-69.
07:03Purdue was up late in this game.
07:05Ended up closing it out.
07:07And believe it or not, Kentucky.
07:09Kentucky led Iowa State for the majority of the first half
07:12of their game.
07:14But ISU just stormed back as four and a half point favorites.
07:16And they end up winning this one.
07:19And they outscored Kentucky 51-33 in the second half.
07:22All right, real quick, I'll go through some other headlines here.
07:24And then I want to get to golf and some baseball here.
07:26Arizona beats Utah State 78-66.
07:30Utah State kept this close throughout.
07:32But Arizona ended up winning.
07:33Tennessee moving on.
07:34The six versus the three.
07:36So not quite the upset here.
07:37Because Tennessee was a light favorite.
07:39But they're going back to the Sweet 16.
07:41Fourth straight Sweet 16 for Tennessee.
07:44The big story of the tournament thus far has been Texas.
07:47They were in that play-in game early last week.
07:49They ended up winning three games last week.
07:51Beat Gonzaga 74-68.
07:53The Zags were five and a half point favorites.
07:55They were in my final four.
07:56And now they're out.
07:56And Nebraska keeps moving on.
07:58They beat Vanderbilt 74-72.
08:02They were one and a half point favorites were Vanderbilt.
08:05And basically, Nebraska is one of those surprise teams thus far.
08:09Because they hadn't won an NCAA tournament going into this thing.
08:12All right, the Valspar Championship goes to Matt Fitzpatrick.
08:15One of the tune-ups for the Masters.
08:17Matty P, or Matty F, excuse me, comes through.
08:20By the way, Brady Cannon on our show picked this guy to win the championship last week.
08:23Impressive.
08:24And also, the Blue Jays have extended their general manager and manager for the upcoming season.
08:30Specifically, John Schneider is their manager.
08:32He'll be managing for the immediate future.
