00:05Hey guys, Sid here from PlayStation Blog. We're at GDC, that's the Game Developers Conference, and I just checked out
00:11Project Morpheus. That's a prototype virtual reality system that works with PS4, and I'm here with Dr. Rick Marks. You
00:19work with SUNY Computer Entertainment, America's R&D department, and you're the director of what they've been calling the Magic
00:25Lab.
00:25Correct. Tell me about what virtual reality, what Project Morpheus, what they're sort of going to bring to the development
00:30community.
00:31Well, at PlayStation we're always trying to push the boundaries of play, right, and one of the things we've always
00:36tried to do is make games more immersive.
00:38This is even one step past where we've ever been before, so virtual reality, it's really about being in a
00:44completely different space, a different environment, and really feeling like you're there.
00:48So I was playing EVE, Valkyrie, which is this really cool demo that you guys have set up down there,
00:54and one of the things I noticed right away is I was wearing Project Morpheus.
00:57It's light, it's comfortable to wear, it's a prototype, but I'm looking down and I can see my body, I
01:02can see my fists ripping the flight sticks, and it was unlike anything I've ever experienced before.
01:07I've never tried virtual reality. I mean, tell me about this concept of presence that you guys are bringing.
01:11Presence is that feeling when you really are not where you are anymore and you're present in a different space,
01:17so in that case you're in a cockpit.
01:19You actually believe that you're in a cockpit when you feel that feeling of presence.
01:23So yeah, you look around and you see the bars of the windshield and stuff, and you're really like, I'm
01:27not where I was a minute ago. That's that feeling.
01:30When you watch a movie or you, even when you play most games, you don't really feel like you're there.
01:36This is different that way.
01:37I was a little, you know, skeptical, I have to say. I mean, it's virtual reality. We've been promised this
01:42before, right?
01:43I mean, 10, 15, 20 years ago even. And I'm happy to report, I felt completely stable, I felt totally
01:49grounded in the world, and I felt like I could see everything very clearly and perfectly.
01:53So talk about a little bit of the technology that you guys have been working on to make sure that
01:56Project Morpheus is going to be a really balanced experience for gamers.
02:00Sure. I mean, there have been virtual reality things in the past where you could have no motion sickness, but
02:06they were really, really expensive.
02:08Now we're at this kind of perfect storm where screen technology and tracking technology, all are possible.
02:14All the graphics rendering power you need to do it, all that is at an affordable price where you could
02:18actually make a consumer product out of it.
02:20That's awesome. So Project Morpheus is already very impressive, but very much a work in progress right now.
02:25Yeah, it's a very good kit already, but yeah, it's not what we're considering final at this stage.
02:31All right. Outstanding. Well, that was Dr. Rick Marks. We were checking out Project Morpheus. Stay tuned for more GDC
02:38coverage.
