00:01Pretend you're a donkey if you love the costas.
00:04Hey, aw, we love the beach.
00:06Oi, oi, better done, we love ya.
00:09Oi, oi, Kerry and Nicola, we really do.
00:12And with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:16it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:19Ah, this is a lie.
00:21Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:24Missed him.
00:25My life, you're right.
00:27Stress level.
00:28Through the roof.
00:30But at the end of the working day...
00:32Go power, go power, come on, Sam.
00:34Forward.
00:34Booyah.
00:35The quality of light on the costas...
00:41Is priceless.
00:42Cheers.
00:43Peace and love, cheers.
00:45That's why there will always be...
00:47I don't like weather, Sam.
00:48Get some blazes where it shouldn't get.
00:49Quick, someone talk about the weather.
00:51The weather.
00:52Phew.
00:53It's friendly, it's exciting.
00:55It's just like a second home.
00:56Bargain, the big Brits in the sun.
00:58Yeah!
01:00Today on the costas, singer Gaynor is changing direction with her new act.
01:10There's no peace for bar owner Diane on Remembrance Day.
01:14Can I relax now?
01:15No, not at the minute.
01:16And strap yourself in as we revisit Daredevil Val's death-defying dive.
01:21I said, OK, now, it's a bit scary.
01:31So this is my favourite area of the caravan.
01:37In Betty Dorms, singer Gaynor is delving into her extensive self-care collection.
01:42We have all the hair sprays and all the products there.
01:46We have all the make-up here.
01:48We have some of the remedies if I feel I need my oils.
01:52It's all organised perfectly to hand.
01:56Like partner Dean, she's a full-time singer in the cabaret clubs on the strip.
01:59And after a forced absence, she's making a return to the spotlight.
02:04I've got everything I possibly need to get ready for the day, for the night, whatever I'm doing.
02:10All to hand, no rummaging needed.
02:12It's all there.
02:14Before I ended up in sunny Benidorm, I had a sensible job running a hotel in Cornwall
02:21before I decided to have midlife crisis and come to Benidorm and be a singer again.
02:29I want to hear you sing!
02:32Recently, Gaynor's had to stop doing her regular Tina Turner tribute act,
02:37as the raspy singing style wasn't simply the best for her voice.
02:41So as a result of doing the Tina show,
02:46I ended up having some real difficult vocal struggles and health struggles as well.
02:53And unfortunately, I had to stop singing, which is difficult when, you know,
02:59obviously it's a source of income living out here.
03:01And had to forge a plan of recovery for myself to repair the damage that I had done.
03:10The enforced break means Gaynor's had to rethink her career and her act.
03:16This is my costume cupboard.
03:20These are the different types of waistcoats that I wore for my country show.
03:26This is a show I'm doing because it's a lot better on my vocals.
03:31To be in that situation thinking,
03:33Oh my gosh, I might never be able to sing anything ever again.
03:38It was a bit of a shock and a bit of a challenge.
03:41So I've had to re-address my life,
03:44my life choices and my lifestyle and my health.
03:49These are a bit more dressy.
03:50These are a night-time cowboy outfit.
03:52As part of her recuperation,
03:55Gaynor swapped out sequined dresses and wigs for Stetsons and Spurs.
04:00Tina Turner tribute took its toll on my vocal cords.
04:04So since then I've tried to find ways of helping myself,
04:09taking the inflammation down from my throat,
04:11making it healthy as possible in there so I can continue to sing.
04:16So I've been doing infusions of ginger with lemon.
04:21I've always been into natural health.
04:25I am a Reiki practitioner,
04:29trained masseuse,
04:32aromatherapy, reflexology, all that kind of thing.
04:35I'm a firm believer that everything you need to heal yourself
04:39is on the planet.
04:41Gaynor's voice needs all the help it can get.
04:44Tonight she's performing her new act.
04:46I tend to do two glassfuls.
04:48One I drink in the day
04:51and then one I take to work and drink when I'm on stage.
04:55And it does seem to have helped a lot.
04:59Another help through her recovery
05:01has been her partner and Liam Gallagher tribute, Dean.
05:05You know, your voice as a singer is your instrument.
05:08It's your moneymaker.
05:10Anything that was suggested,
05:12she's taken to get it right.
05:14And now she's got a nice routine
05:17with her concoctions of drinks and medication,
05:21exercising.
05:23Still not through the woods yet,
05:25but it's a slow process,
05:28but we're getting there.
05:30Let's hope her regime works,
05:32because if it doesn't,
05:33tonight's show could be less of a line-dancing hoedown
05:36and more of a great big letdown.
05:39This is the sage drops.
05:41Done.
05:47We may be famous for our stiff upper lips,
05:50but when us Brits come to the costas,
05:52it seems we're not afraid to let our hair down
05:54and take a walk on the wild side.
05:57We are going out on a banana boat later.
05:59You really want to do the parachute one,
06:02where you go up in the sky.
06:04I'm adventurous.
06:04We went to the water park
06:06and it was only me who went on the water slides.
06:09I jumped on a plane,
06:10which was horrendous, actually.
06:14You're never too old to feel the fear and do it anyway.
06:17And one retiree who's young at heart
06:19is daredevil pensioner, Val.
06:24I come to my little house.
06:26This is my sitting room where I sit.
06:29That's why I've got all those cushions in that corner.
06:32We're action replaying some of Val's most adrenaline-fuelled moments,
06:36but not before a bit of a snoop round the Mijas house
06:39she's lived in since 1985.
06:42It's up in the hills,
06:43so she's clearly got her head for heights.
06:47This is a conservatory
06:48and this is a really very useful room
06:50because you couldn't use it all year round.
06:52But the trouble is that it gets very dirty, the glass above,
06:56so I have to climb right up on the top
06:58and walk along the glass and wash it.
07:01In those shoes?
07:02It's a health and safety nightmare, Val.
07:04You put your feet on the beam, you see.
07:06One leg on one beam and one on the other, like that,
07:08and then I mop in between like that.
07:10What? You're pulling me leg.
07:12She's not one for sitting back and taking it easy.
07:14And today she's going to try something she's never done.
07:17And surprise, surprise, it involves heights.
07:21Well, today I'm going to go parasailing.
07:24The first time in my life
07:25and I'm taking along for moral support and treating them.
07:30My two grandchildren are here from London.
07:33This sounds risky, so it's a good idea to have backup.
07:3716-year-old Soren and 18-year-old Faber
07:40are in Fwengirola to try something new with their gran.
07:43Originally, Nanny had the idea of going abseiling,
07:46but we thought maybe something a bit more, less stressful,
07:49so we decided to do parasailing instead,
07:51but it was all Nanny's idea in the best place.
07:53Probably less stressful than climbing on a glass roof.
07:57First, this fashion-conscious Nanny needs to get fitted out with a harness.
08:01Make sure I get a good one.
08:06Oh, suits you, Val.
08:08It keeps us young.
08:09Well, I hope it does.
08:10And once they're all tugged up, she's straight out of the door.
08:14Don't think about it.
08:15I just go.
08:16That's it.
08:16How can you not be otherwise?
08:19Facing a new challenge is something Val's familiar with.
08:22I got married when I was 22,
08:25and unfortunately, my husband died very sadly
08:28when I had three very young children in 1975.
08:32Which left Val to raise the kids by herself.
08:35They worked very hard, and when the children were teenagers,
08:39I sold up and came to live here in 1985.
08:42There's not much in life that scares her,
08:44but maybe being over 100 metres above the Fuengirola waters might.
08:49OK, are we ready?
08:50Ready.
08:52It's now or never.
08:57Coming up, bar owner Diane's poppy day plans are in crisis mode.
09:02It's just too much stuff.
09:04It's everywhere.
09:05We can't do any of this set-up the night before.
09:08And singer Gain is worried her voice might not hold out.
09:11I don't want to be singing up there and screeching.
09:15Yeah.
09:16I'm not getting any up there.
09:37I'm not getting any up there.
09:47Today is Remembrance Sunday.
09:49Really important day for the bar because it's what we're all about.
09:52Today we have the service at half past 11,
09:55and then we join the cenotaph at 12,
09:57just after our wreath plan.
09:59And then we have our celebration.
10:01The most important thing is to get everything ready for the service.
10:04See how things go.
10:06It's calm before the storm.
10:08But Diane, today is a very special day,
10:10and a very personal one as an ex-servicewoman.
10:13Right here.
10:15So my armed forces career started off
10:17when I joined the Territorial Army in 1985.
10:22And then I joined the regular army for a year
10:24and decided I liked it, so I stayed for 13 years.
10:28Everything you see in the room is a bit of a mess at the minute, obviously.
10:31That's why we're panicking a bit.
10:33It's very difficult to explain that to anybody
10:36that has not got any armed forces history.
10:38We're like a great big family.
10:40So today is very important for us
10:42because it's one of the biggest dates that we have in our calendar,
10:44first and foremost.
10:45But it's also a day that we all get together,
10:48veterans serving families of people that have lost veterans,
10:52people of the same mindset,
10:54talking about the reasons why we're here
10:56and those that we've lost
10:57and what they gave up and what their sacrifices were.
11:01There's just too much stuff.
11:03It's everywhere.
11:05We can't do any of this set-up the night before
11:07because we can't put anything outside,
11:09so everything has to be done on the day,
11:12which is not usually so bad if you've got a later start.
11:15When you've got an early start, it's like,
11:16I don't do mornings.
11:18That's part of the issue.
11:19The pressure's on because the bar isn't even open yet
11:22and the crowd have started arriving.
11:25How many people are going to be here?
11:26I have no idea.
11:28It could be from 50 to 400.
11:31I'm hoping it's not more than 400.
11:33The pair have got their work cut out
11:35to pull this together in time.
11:37I need to get the cross and the soldier
11:40outside and over to where we're going to lay the wreaths.
11:44So my husband Jim's role today
11:46is basically to not get in my way.
11:48It seems to be heavier or smaller.
11:50It's going here.
11:51The soldier and the man's going,
11:52the cross is going here.
11:54Do as he's told when he's told to do it.
11:56So his biggest job in the day
11:58is not to take anything I say too seriously
12:00and as long as we're still talking
12:02by the end of the day, it's fine.
12:04It's not going good.
12:06Too much to be done in too little time.
12:08Calling some reinforcements, Diane.
12:11Here comes my helper. Yay!
12:14While Carl gets stuck into the camo netting,
12:16Diane is on manoeuvres indoors.
12:20My involvement in the ceremony
12:21is setting everything up,
12:23making sure it works
12:24and doing the actual ceremony.
12:26We have to check with the timings
12:27because obviously it's Spain
12:28so the timings tend to slide
12:30and it gets all a bit confused.
12:31With the service imminent,
12:33the heat is on.
12:35So all these tables need to be cleared,
12:36the impressals need to go outside,
12:38the TV needs plugged in.
12:40I need to turn on the sound system
12:41and make sure it works
12:42because obviously we have to have the TV on
12:45for 12 o'clock
12:46for the two-minute silence.
12:48With minutes to go,
12:50Diane's technology has to work.
12:5211am UK time
12:54is a deadline that cannot be moved.
12:56Can you hear me outside?
12:58Can you hear me?
13:05Today I've officially got 5,000 followers.
13:09Have you?
13:10Of course.
13:11Well, I'll get you popular.
13:13In Benidorm,
13:14tribute act power couple
13:16Gaynor and Dean
13:17are getting into the zone
13:18before tonight's big show.
13:20So you're at 5 o'clock at the Western.
13:23I am.
13:24I'm following you.
13:266 o'clock.
13:26See you.
13:276 o'clock.
13:27Back to back.
13:28I like it.
13:29That's good.
13:30Get the place rocking
13:31like we do.
13:33I'll warm them up for you, love.
13:35Warm them up.
13:35Don't peak them too soon.
13:37Save a bit for me.
13:39Gaynor's been battling
13:40with a health problem
13:41that's forced her to cancel gigs.
13:45I am so lucky
13:47to have this human supporting me.
13:51I'll help Gaynor out
13:52and she helps me out
13:54and it all goes in the same pot.
13:56That's the part of a good team
13:58which we are.
13:59A good working team
14:01and then we're a good
14:03strong relationship team as well.
14:06Let's go see Mars here, shall we?
14:09Let's go see Mars, yeah.
14:12Get some coffee and lunch.
14:15I'm going to go and meet up my friend
14:17that's come over from the UK.
14:19It's always really important
14:21when you've got friends visiting
14:23that you want to do your best for them.
14:26So I'm a little bit nervous,
14:29quite excited.
14:30It would be nice to see what she thinks
14:32and give me an opinion
14:33of this new country show.
14:37It's the first time
14:38her best mate Marcia
14:40will see the new show.
14:41Hello!
14:43And Gaynor's keen to impress her.
14:45Hello!
14:46Oh, lovely to see you.
14:49Oh, happy being,
14:50have you been all right?
14:51I'm getting there,
14:52getting a lot better than I was.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Over the last few months,
14:56Gaynor's been having
14:57some serious problems
14:58with her voice.
15:00So, I have brought you
15:01lots of throat swings.
15:02Oh, you're a star.
15:03I've always just
15:04taken my voice for granted.
15:07Yeah.
15:07And I knew it was getting worse and worse.
15:09So when this new opportunity
15:11to do this show came along,
15:13it was like,
15:14I'll have a bit of that.
15:15Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely.
15:16Yeah.
15:16And it suited me.
15:17So, obviously,
15:19with not doing Tina,
15:20I'm doing the country show,
15:21which is more me
15:22and more my own style.
15:24And if I don't want to
15:26be singing up there
15:28and screeching,
15:29I can just do balance and stuff.
15:32You've got to look after yourself.
15:32I know, I'm not getting any younger.
15:36Neither are none.
15:37It is competitive,
15:38the industry in Benidorm.
15:41You have to try hard
15:42to keep your place,
15:43keep your work.
15:44Obviously, I'm a woman
15:46of a certain age.
15:47It's quite male-dominated
15:50in Benidorm.
15:53So, to be succeeding
15:55as a female is,
15:57it's a privilege.
15:58I feel very honoured.
16:02So, you're coming
16:02to see me tonight?
16:03I am.
16:04Definitely coming
16:04to see you tonight.
16:05Are you bringing a crowd?
16:06I'm going to try
16:06and get a crowd of girls,
16:08yep, definitely.
16:08Oh, that'd be good.
16:09Bit of line dancing.
16:10Yeah.
16:11Oh, yeah, that'd be good.
16:12It'll be the first time
16:13Marcia's seen
16:14Gaynor's new
16:15country rock direction.
16:17I owe you money
16:18for me throat lozenges.
16:19As long as her voice
16:20holds out.
16:22You're Prezi, love,
16:23from England.
16:23Oh, that's very kind of you.
16:25I'll buy the drinks later.
16:36This is a recent picture
16:38of Minnie on the beach
16:40and it's a really lovely picture
16:42because it's on our journey
16:43down here to Spain this time
16:45and it was just
16:45a really nice journey.
16:49So, Minnie's my little chihuahua.
16:51I've had her
16:52for four or five years.
16:53She's my little best friend.
16:55I got her as a rescue
16:57four years ago
16:58and we've been inseparable
17:00since then.
17:00She's just become
17:01part of the family.
17:07She's just happy
17:08to just get on
17:09with everything herself.
17:10This photo,
17:11she's quite happy
17:11to go mooching
17:12around on the beach.
17:13Doesn't particularly need me
17:15if I'm there or not
17:16as long as I'm there
17:17at the end of the day
17:18for her.
17:24To travel round
17:26in my motorhome
17:27with Minnie
17:27is just fantastic.
17:29I can just do
17:29what I want
17:29when I want, really.
17:38The skies above
17:39Swengirola
17:40are about to witness
17:41a strange new phenomenon.
17:44Oh, my God.
17:46It's the moment of truth
17:48for 83-year-old Val
17:50taking on her first
17:51parasailing experience.
17:54I'm holding on.
17:56Oh, we're going faster.
17:59I'd rather this
18:00than a roller coaster.
18:02It's quite adventurous,
18:03isn't it?
18:04Well, it certainly is, Val.
18:06Don't look down.
18:07We're going down now,
18:08are we?
18:12I'm holding on now.
18:14I got my bum wet.
18:16Val, the eagle has landed.
18:24I'm feeling very happy
18:25to be so lucky
18:26to be able to be up in the air
18:28at the age of 83
18:29and I've not an ache
18:30in my body.
18:31Oh, I need to lie down
18:33after that.
18:33But not Val.
18:34As soon as her grandkids
18:36were on the flight home,
18:37she was thinking about
18:38her next adventure.
18:39Luckily, there's no shortage
18:41of adrenaline spiking days
18:43out in Spain.
18:44And we're joining Val
18:45on her most extreme challenge yet.
18:50I prefer ground coffee,
18:51but it's too much bother.
18:53So you get instant.
18:54Along with her friend Al,
18:56today she's going to fly
18:57even further
18:58on a zip wire
18:59almost 200 metres
19:01up in the air.
19:02The big question is,
19:03just what does one wear
19:05to go zip wiring?
19:07OK then, Val,
19:08let's see how you look now.
19:09I thought I would wear
19:10something bright
19:11so they can see me
19:13going through the air.
19:14If I could wolf whistle,
19:15I would.
19:16Wow.
19:16I don't think anyone
19:17will miss you in that get-up.
19:19I'll be flying through the air.
19:20They'll think it's a wasp
19:21coming, you see.
19:22They're not going to miss you,
19:22are they?
19:23No.
19:23I don't want them to miss me.
19:28Come on then.
19:29Let's get going.
19:30Bye, Ethel.
19:32Bye-bye, bye-bye.
19:34Dog lover Val's realised
19:36she can combine her mission
19:37to try new experiences
19:38with helping a local dog charity.
19:41I'm fundraising for Adana
19:42because I saw those fires
19:45and I couldn't believe it.
19:47We saw it on the news,
19:48we saw it in the newspapers
19:50and I just felt so sorry
19:53so I thought we've got
19:54to try and help them.
19:55Thankfully,
19:56all the dogs got out in time
19:58but the charity's kennels
19:59were badly damaged
20:00so Val's sponsorship
20:02will contribute
20:03to their repair.
20:04With the newspaper
20:04covering this remarkable feat,
20:07Val could do
20:07with all the support
20:08she can get.
20:10Good afternoon.
20:11Hello.
20:13Handily,
20:13she's got two of her friends
20:14and neighbours
20:15Albert and Jack involved.
20:17They're not just here
20:18for the ride,
20:18they're going to go
20:20zip wiring too.
20:21How are we then?
20:22Are we up for it?
20:23Yeah.
20:24Yeah, we are.
20:25The combined age
20:25of this gravity-defying quartet
20:27is 313 years.
20:30Want to put your seatbelts on?
20:31Yeah.
20:32When I find the seatbelts.
20:36Buckle up, Jack.
20:37Good practice for later.
20:42Coming up,
20:43bar owner Diane's
20:44supply lines
20:45are running dry.
20:46It's got to be
20:47a bit of a drama now
20:48because we're running
20:48out of alcohol,
20:49we've run out of glasses
20:50so I have to do a stock
20:51and make sure
20:52that we've got enough.
20:53And singer Gainer
20:54needs to saddle up
20:55and mosey on out.
20:56So much to do,
20:59so little time.
21:01I need to pick out
21:02an outfit.
21:17It's three minutes
21:18till we open
21:18and start to panic now a bit.
21:20In Benidorm,
21:21ex-servicewoman Diane...
21:22Panic!
21:24...is about to welcome
21:25the guests
21:25at the British Legion's
21:26annual Remembrance Day event.
21:29He was ready
21:30to let the hoard in.
21:32Hey, everybody,
21:33bars open!
21:34Don't all rush up once.
21:35You're not going anywhere
21:36for a couple of hours.
21:37I think they heard that
21:38back in the UK.
21:40I think there's going to be
21:41a lot of people
21:42for the beer.
21:44The ladies like the spirits.
21:46So,
21:47it's going to be a good day.
21:48It certainly looks like
21:49it could be a merry one,
21:51Pauline.
21:52Madness.
21:54Everybody wants a drink.
21:56You see people
21:57don't drink before the service,
21:59but we're in Spain
22:00and we're doing
22:00a wee bit different here.
22:02Before the service,
22:04it's a tradition
22:04to assemble at the Legion,
22:06but Diane's do
22:07has attracted a crowd
22:08of 350
22:09to her 130-seater venue.
22:13So,
22:13the people that will be
22:15coming to the service today
22:16will be a range of
22:17veterans that are here,
22:19veterans that are here
22:20on holiday,
22:21holidaymakers,
22:22but I don't care.
22:23It's people like mine
22:24that want to come
22:25and share the day with us.
22:26So,
22:26they'll be a range,
22:27they'll be young,
22:28old,
22:29just every walk of life.
22:31The packed gathering
22:32is no bad thing
22:33because more guests
22:35means more donations.
22:36The proceeds from today
22:38for the raffle
22:40that we're doing later
22:41is going towards
22:42not only the British Legion
22:44puppy appeal,
22:45but also towards
22:46the Valencia appeal.
22:47So,
22:48no matter what,
22:48you're going towards
22:49a charity.
22:50OK?
22:53My Armed Forces career
22:54spanned over 25 years,
22:5712 years with the
22:58Territorial Army
22:59and then 13 years
23:00with the Regular Army.
23:01From everything
23:02from being a nurse,
23:03day a medic
23:03to disciplined sergeant,
23:05they were great times
23:06and I finally retired
23:07in 2010.
23:09She might have
23:10hung up her uniform
23:11but her connection
23:12to the Armed Forces
23:13is as strong as ever.
23:15So,
23:15we've got 20 minutes
23:16to go
23:16and it's all gone well
23:17apparently.
23:18As I say,
23:18we'll see what happens
23:19when I turn the TV on.
23:21It's when it all
23:22goes a bit peaked on.
23:24Everything's got to be ready
23:25to match the 11am silence
23:27in the UK
23:28and the clock is ticking.
23:31Hopefully you can all hear me.
23:32Most hear me.
23:34What a turnout.
23:35Amazing.
23:36Thank you all
23:36for joining us here today.
23:37You know why we're all here,
23:39so it's just going to be
23:40a short service
23:40and I'm going to gallop up
23:42and hopefully get
23:43the cenotaph on the TV.
23:45Can I ask you all,
23:46please,
23:46to be upstanding?
23:48They grow not old
23:50as we that are left grow old.
23:53Age shall not worry them
23:54nor the years condemn
23:57at the going down of the sun
23:58and in the morning
24:00we will remember them.
24:02We will remember them.
24:25With the two-minute silence marked,
24:27it's a chance for these veterans
24:29to raise a glass
24:30to missing comrades.
24:32Have we any pint glasses?
24:33None left.
24:34What about the ones up the top?
24:36They're gone as well.
24:37What about the dishwasher ones
24:38that's pulling on?
24:39We can get them.
24:39Just only just put it on.
24:41If only they had
24:42some glasses to raise.
24:45It's going to be a bit
24:46of a drama now
24:46because we're running
24:47out of alcohol,
24:48we've run out of glasses
24:49so now I'm going to
24:49clear some tables.
24:50I have to do a stock
24:52and make sure that we've got enough
24:53because obviously we weren't expected
24:55this many people
24:56but it's been a great day.
24:57It might cause chaos
24:59behind the bar
25:00but the day is far from over
25:01and every customer
25:02is a potential
25:03raffle ticket buyer.
25:04Can I relax now?
25:06No, not at the minute.
25:15Come on then.
25:16Let's do this.
25:17Get organised.
25:19Get a move on.
25:20About an hour to go.
25:22Singer Gain has got her work
25:23cut out to get ready
25:24for this evening's
25:25live country music show.
25:27So much to do.
25:29So little time.
25:31She's suffered a possibly
25:33career-ending voice issue
25:34so she's got to take
25:35every precaution
25:37to protect it.
25:38Before I get ready
25:38I'll do a few little
25:39throat exercises.
25:42I was completely
25:44laryngitis all the time
25:46and I was signed off
25:47for quite a long,
25:49long time.
25:50You're conscious of
25:51not losing your kind of place
25:54within the venues
25:56or your sort of
25:57regular work here
25:58and I had to start
25:59looking at different ways
26:00in which I could maintain
26:02my voice
26:02which I hadn't done
26:03in the past.
26:11I didn't know
26:12you were a West Ham
26:12fan, Gaina.
26:14The idea behind
26:15this exercise
26:17is to
26:19strengthen
26:20the vocal cords
26:22and it's
26:23apparently highly
26:24recommended
26:24and I've never heard
26:25of it before
26:26until recently.
26:27Well, neither had I
26:28until now.
26:35when Gaina does
26:36her exercises
26:37that's my little
26:38time to
26:39put my headphones on
26:40and watch a bit of TV.
26:42Thanks, love.
26:43No problems.
26:44See you later.
26:45Thanks for your support.
26:47Anything good on, Dean?
26:48Oh!
26:49Warm-up done.
26:51I'll take that
26:52to have a little slurp on
26:53and I need to go
26:55and get ready.
26:55I've learnt a whole host
26:57of country tunes.
26:59I'm enjoying it.
27:00The songs suit my voice.
27:02I've kind of got
27:02a little yodel-y
27:04voice sometimes.
27:05So, um,
27:06I've started singing
27:07as me
27:09rather than
27:09trying to imitate
27:10somebody else's
27:12vocal ability.
27:14Time to dig out
27:16your spurs
27:16and best
27:17Western drawl.
27:18Lots to do.
27:20We're running
27:21a bit low
27:22on time.
27:23Make-up.
27:24And lots of it.
27:26That's the key part.
27:27Oh, my motto,
27:28exactly.
27:30To look the part,
27:31as it were.
27:32Although it does
27:33get harder with age.
27:35If you're a male performer,
27:36you don't necessarily
27:37have to
27:38make as much effort,
27:40but I think
27:41there's a lot of pressure
27:42when it comes to
27:44the expected image
27:46of a female performer.
27:48And, you know,
27:50I put a lot of weight
27:51on when I got so ill,
27:53but there was nothing
27:54really at that point
27:56that I was able to do
27:57because of the fatigue
27:59and the kind of
28:00energy levels.
28:02But you can't put
28:03your life on hold
28:04until you are
28:05an acceptable level
28:07of perfect.
28:09So you've just got to
28:10get on and do it.
28:11And I am,
28:12I do feel
28:13very grateful
28:14that I can
28:14still perform
28:16at whatever level.
28:18And I'm,
28:19you know,
28:19doing some
28:21great venues,
28:22great venues
28:23in Benador.
28:26Right,
28:26that should do
28:27for now.
28:28I need to
28:28pick out
28:29an outfit.
28:31So does Oasis
28:32tribute Dean.
28:33Here's Parker's
28:34ready to rock.
28:37Okay,
28:37so I'll do my bag.
28:38You all right?
28:39You definitely look like
28:40you're going to be a
28:41country singer.
28:42Is that a better way to go
28:43or the longer?
28:44That one.
28:45We're the black one,
28:45babe.
28:47We're better with that one.
28:49Yeah.
28:50If I send the short one,
28:51and I mean the short one,
28:52she'll put the long one on.
28:55If you two are going to make it
28:56to the venue in time,
28:58you need to get this wagon
28:59a-rolling.
29:00Come on.
29:01Let's do it.
29:03Yeehaw!
29:09Gayna may be living her best life,
29:11wowing the crowds,
29:12but with over 280,000 Brits
29:15working in Spain,
29:16she's not the only one
29:17living the dream.
29:19If I lived in Spain,
29:20I think I'd like to run my own bar
29:21or a little coffee shop
29:23or a little B&B
29:23or something like that.
29:25If I worked over here,
29:26I would like to open
29:27my own trampoline club.
29:28I'm afraid that job
29:29has its ups and downs.
29:31I think my dream job
29:32would be to work on the beach
29:33as a lifeguard.
29:34If I was a bit younger,
29:35a holiday rep,
29:36I think that would be
29:37absolutely awesome.
29:37Oh, that would be cool.
29:38Oh, yeah, that would be cool.
29:39You'd be terrific, Sarah-J.
29:41If I moved to Spain,
29:42I'd definitely set up a Welsh bar
29:44because I haven't seen one.
29:45And we've got to have a bit of Welsh
29:46in a bit of Benidon.
29:47Sangria and Welsh cakes?
29:49Oh, I'm sold.
29:50It wouldn't like to work in Spain.
29:52We're all being tired.
29:53We're being tired.
29:53Yeah, we're all being tired now with it.
29:56Fair enough, ladies.
29:57You've earned your time
29:58in the sunshine.
29:59I think dog walking
30:01would be a good job in Spain now
30:03because there's so many dogs.
30:05Well, you've changed your tune.
30:11And speaking of fulfilling your dreams...
30:14Are you eating?
30:15Yeah.
30:16Yeah?
30:16Yeah.
30:17OK, good.
30:18Val and her gang of thrill-seeking pensioners
30:21are filling up with a hearty lunch
30:22before they go zip-wiring
30:24for the very first time.
30:26It's a solid look.
30:27Solid look.
30:29Let's hope that's not your last meal, Val.
30:32Alan's got something to stiffen his nerves.
30:37And it's time for a quick snap
30:39for the paper
30:39that's sponsoring their final moments.
30:41I mean, fearless adventure.
30:44Goodbye, true world.
30:47I'm sure it won't be that bad.
30:49Oh, it is.
30:53The zip-wire over the Guadalurse Valley
30:55is over 1,300 metres,
30:57the longest in Andalusia,
30:59and they could reach speeds
31:00of more than 60 miles an hour.
31:02All my friends are going on the zip-wire
31:06because they've worried about me on my own,
31:08so they've all come.
31:09So we're all going to go on it,
31:11and two friends are older than me,
31:13and it's quite hard to find
31:14many people older than me,
31:15but I found two.
31:16Jack.
31:17How old are you, Jack?
31:18I'm 78.
31:1978?
31:20Alan said you're over 80.
31:22Jack's not 85.
31:23He's 78.
31:25Is that all he is?
31:26Yeah, all he is.
31:27Oh, he's just a whippersnapper.
31:28What's a few years
31:29amongst young at heart thrill-seekers?
31:32First to fly is 89-year-old Albert,
31:34and Val,
31:35that is a confirmed age.
31:38He's going tandem with his mate,
31:40young whippersnapper Jack.
31:49Oh, crikey.
31:50It looks like there's a problem.
31:51They've run out of momentum
31:53and got stuck.
31:54Right, rescue's on the way.
31:56Don't move.
31:57Oh, you can't.
31:59But with some help
32:01from the ground crew,
32:02the boys are reeled back
32:03onto terra firma.
32:04Well, kind of.
32:06It was so fast.
32:09Amazing.
32:12Yeah, fine.
32:13I enjoyed that.
32:15I'm ready to do it again.
32:18Hold your horses, Albert,
32:19because this was all Val's idea,
32:21and she's up next.
32:23Is it for a good cause,
32:24isn't it, Val?
32:24Oh, of course it is, yes.
32:25As long as I don't fall off
32:26in this wind.
32:28It's not the wind
32:29you need to worry about.
32:30It's the 200-foot drop
32:31to the bottom of the mountain.
32:32That's a...
32:33OK, now.
32:37Right, we have lift-off,
32:38and right behind her
32:39is her pal, Al.
32:41She looks like she's enjoying it.
32:43It's hard to tell.
32:44And Al's racing into the lead
32:45and safely home.
32:48Val's taking her time
32:49enjoying the view.
32:59It was a bit scary
33:01at the beginning,
33:02but then once I got...
33:03It felt all right.
33:06Cool as a cucumber
33:07you are, Val.
33:09That's a good one.
33:10Yeah.
33:11I almost thought
33:12she was starved.
33:13Absolutely brilliant, yeah?
33:14Yeah.
33:16Well, I don't think
33:17I'm going to do it again.
33:19But who knows what's next?
33:21It is.
33:22Well done.
33:23Well done.
33:24Brilliant.
33:24Now you've got to...
33:25Now you've got to walk back.
33:29Skydive or a bungee jump, maybe,
33:31with 200 euros raised
33:33for the dog shelter
33:34and a tick on the bucket list.
33:36Whatever's next,
33:37the sky's the limit.
33:39Yay!
33:43Coming up,
33:44ex-servicewoman Diane
33:46is at the double.
33:47So I do a thing called
33:48speed raffle.
33:49Oh, yes.
33:51You come up the stage,
33:52you take a praise
33:53and you go away.
33:55And country singer Gaynor
33:57is finally back in the saddle.
34:00Can we all do it?
34:04So, let's do it, shall we?
34:18The aftermath is tomorrow
34:20is cleaning up
34:20after all this
34:21because there won't be
34:22much done tonight.
34:24At the Benidorm British
34:25Legion's HQ,
34:27event organiser Diane
34:28has been flat out
34:29for the last four hours.
34:31The life of the successful
34:33bar owner in Spain.
34:35As well as setting up
34:36the Remembrance Day service,
34:38she runs the bar
34:39where the veterans assemble.
34:41$4.50.
34:43Did you say keep the 50 cents?
34:45Thanks.
34:47I think it's very important
34:48for the community
34:49to have an event today.
34:51So, although there's
34:52a lot of other bars
34:53in Benidorm
34:53are doing functions for today,
34:55we're the only ones
34:56that do the introduction
34:57at the beginning.
34:58We do a short service
35:00where we do
35:01the two-minute silence
35:02and then in the afternoon
35:03where then we have
35:04the entertainment
35:05starting about half past one.
35:06And with around
35:08300 thirsty attendees,
35:10she's got her work
35:11cut out to keep them fed,
35:12watered
35:13and entertained.
35:15Thanks for that.
35:16It's for you dancing, please.
35:18Thank you very much.
35:19You need.
35:28Diane can't spend too long
35:30letting her hair down.
35:32As well as being a community event,
35:33there's money to be raised.
35:36Yay!
35:41Right.
35:42Raffle, we're going to do raffle now.
35:43This is all in need
35:44of the British Legion,
35:45Poppy Appeal,
35:46and the Valencia flooding.
35:48So we should get at least
35:49250 for each of the charities,
35:51I would say,
35:51if not more.
35:53A target of 500 euros
35:55is ambitious,
35:56but Diane's unique
35:57raffle technique
35:58gives her a fighting chance.
36:00Anybody not been
36:01to one of my raffles before?
36:02So I do a thing
36:04called speed raffle.
36:05Oh, yes.
36:07So,
36:07you've got the space of time,
36:09you come up to the stage,
36:10you take a prize
36:11and you go away.
36:13If the next raffle's called
36:15and you haven't selected
36:16your prize and set up,
36:18you've lost it.
36:20Blimey.
36:20There's no hanging about
36:21when Diane's in charge.
36:22I use ready.
36:24Pink,
36:25601.
36:30Speed raffles off
36:31to a flying start, then.
36:33So has anybody
36:34got 601?
36:35You do them all,
36:36I wish.
36:37I wish.
36:38Green,
36:39829.
36:41Yes!
36:42First winner of the day
36:43is the club's bartender,
36:45Pauline.
36:46I wonder what prize
36:46she'll pick.
36:518,
36:522,
36:539.
36:55Oh, dear,
36:56false call.
36:57What a shame.
36:58It's three numbers.
37:01Let me do this
37:02in the easier way
37:02because I'm a bit fed up.
37:04So is there anybody,
37:05let me just do it this way
37:06because it's
37:07Remembrance Day
37:07and it's all about
37:09remembering them.
37:10So is there anybody
37:11in the room
37:12between the ages
37:13of 90 and 100?
37:16Hedley,
37:17come and take a prize.
37:22Hedley,
37:22in his 90s,
37:23served in the Korean War
37:24and is a well-deserved winner.
37:27I fully enjoy myself
37:29and this day
37:30is a brilliant day
37:31where we all get together,
37:32celebrate the past
37:33but also the future as well
37:35and the serving as well.
37:36Diane works hard.
37:38She works exceptionally hard.
37:40There's an extremely good turnout
37:42since I've had a lot of veterans
37:44in my family,
37:45you know,
37:46you've got to remember
37:46everyone that fought the war,
37:48haven't you?
37:48Where would we be now?
37:50Thank you for your service, darling.
37:54So,
37:55that ends the raffle
37:56for today.
37:59And as well as bringing
38:00a community together,
38:02it's raised some valuable money
38:03for the British Legion
38:04to support veterans
38:05and their families.
38:07So we raised like 300 euros
38:08on the raffle.
38:10We've still got about
38:11three tens to empty
38:12and count.
38:13So it will be over 500,
38:15maybe more on the 600 euro mark,
38:17which is great.
38:18Let me just say,
38:19I almost forget to do this.
38:20I always forget to do this.
38:21So I'd like to thank,
38:22obviously,
38:23my husband here today,
38:24you know,
38:25for helping me make this happen.
38:27I thank you all
38:28for your support.
38:30It's been a very chaotic day
38:32and even though
38:33it run pretty smoothly,
38:34my feet don't think that.
38:35My feet are just screaming at me,
38:37take your shoes off.
38:38But it's been very worthwhile.
38:39And to see the faces
38:41and the experience of support,
38:44my work here is done.
38:46Not quite yet, Diane.
38:48We have got hot dogs
38:50and hamburgers
38:51for anybody
38:51that's getting a bit pecky.
38:53It's three euros
38:54attaching all the money
38:56all going to the top.
39:02It's busy.
39:03Yeah, there's a few there,
39:05which is good.
39:06That's great.
39:06It's all right, isn't it?
39:07Let's do this.
39:08Let's do this, man.
39:10It's a buzzing evening
39:11in Benidorm
39:12and country singer Gaynor
39:13is about to start work.
39:15You got that for me?
39:16You got your fan?
39:17Perfect, I got my fan.
39:19Issues with her voice
39:20mean she's had to retire
39:21her Tina Turner act.
39:24There's still someone
39:25on stage at the moment.
39:26Tonight,
39:27she's showcasing
39:28the new country act
39:29she hopes will save her career
39:31if her voice holds up.
39:33So, um,
39:34doing Tina for,
39:36ooh, quite a few years
39:37and I've only been doing this
39:38a new show.
39:39It's a couple of months now
39:40so there's still
39:41a little bit of anxiety.
39:43You want to get everything right
39:45but you kind of have to put
39:46that to the back of your mind
39:47and just focus
39:48on what's happening now.
39:50Partner Dean
39:51is performing
39:52on the same bill
39:53but it's Gaynor
39:54who's on first.
39:55Hello, darling.
39:57Oh, hi, hello.
39:58Ah, look at you!
39:59You look fab!
40:01Her friend Marcia
40:02is over from the UK
40:03and it's her first time
40:04seeing Gaynor's new show.
40:07Have you got any nerves?
40:08A little bit now, actually
40:10because I feel like
40:11I've not quite
40:12focused my little brain.
40:14So don't let the nerves
40:15get to you?
40:16No, fine.
40:16You'll be fine.
40:17As always.
40:18Well, you know,
40:19it's not my first rodeo.
40:20No, that's true.
40:21That's true.
40:23I've done it before.
40:24I'll see you on the other side.
40:25I'll see you on the other side.
40:28Looking like a full saloon.
40:30Let's do this.
40:32Marcia's in position.
40:34Gaynor's sorted her sound.
40:36The crowd are line dance ready.
40:38And there's a last chance
40:40to have a gulp
40:40of Gaynor's homemade voice potion
40:43before showtime.
40:45How are we all doing?
40:48Are we all feeling fine tonight?
40:51So, let's do it, shall we?
40:59I'll see you on the other side.
41:22And one more mouthful
41:24of Gaynor's magical voice elixir
41:26and the show's over.
41:30Oh, hello, hello, hello, hello.
41:33Nice one, baby.
41:34Smashed it as always.
41:35As always.
41:36Hello, Dean.
41:37I mean, Liam.
41:39I don't know what the sound was like.
41:40What did it sound like out front?
41:41It sounded great out front.
41:42Voice was great.
41:43All them little herbal remedies
41:44paid off.
41:45But everyone thinks
41:46I've got alcohol in here
41:47because I keep going.
41:48Cheers.
41:49Well, whatever's in it
41:51it's helped your voice hold up.
41:55Hello.
41:57Absolutely fantastic.
41:59Oh, pleasure.
41:59You were amazing.
42:00I enjoyed it.
42:01I bet you did.
42:02And you sounded fantastic.
42:04Everything did Tina.
42:05I was always hoarse.
42:06I know, but you were good with Tina,
42:08but I think there's a bunch of more.
42:10I think the infusions are working.
42:12I think the different styles working.
42:15Yeah.
42:15Just looking after myself is working.
42:17That's the main thing.
42:18Yes.
42:19And you've got your throat lozenges.
42:20And, yes,
42:21I supply your throat sweets from you.
42:25This new direction
42:27could keep this cowgirl
42:28riding on the range
42:29long into the future.
42:31Great night.
42:32Great night.
42:32Great night.
42:33Long later continue.
42:34Absolutely.
42:38Next time on The Costas.
42:40Good evening, everybody.
42:41Cafe owner Kayleigh's
42:42reaching for the stars.
42:44Let's go!
42:45Let's go!
42:45Double O Ant
42:46goes deep undercover.
42:48I've got to put this on.
42:49None of them would realise it's me.
42:52And we pop a paw in the past
42:54as Pat pulls out all the stops.
42:56Yeah.
42:58Yeah.
43:07Thank you for listening to The Costas.
