00:00When it comes to the Spanish costas, us Brits all have our favourites.
00:05We love Costa Blanca!
00:07We love Costa Nelso!
00:09Benito!
00:10You've been bennied.
00:12But whichever we prefer, with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:16it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:20Ah, this is a life.
00:22Living that dream life can be blooming hard graft.
00:26Misty!
00:26My left, your right.
00:28Stress level.
00:29Through the roof.
00:31But at the end of the working day,
00:33Girl power, girl power, come on Sam.
00:35Forward.
00:36Booyah!
00:37The quality of life on the costas
00:42Is priceless.
00:43Cheers!
00:45Peace and love, cheers.
00:46That's why there will always be
00:48Espana!
00:50We love it!
00:51Olé!
00:52The weather.
00:53The boys.
00:54The wife being happy.
00:56Bargain-loving Brits,
00:57in the sun.
01:00Today on the costas.
01:02After seven years, bad luck.
01:05Ow!
01:05Daddy, how are you?
01:06Ow!
01:07Cook Paula risks everything for a lucky break.
01:10I'm sure there's one down my boot.
01:13Pet rescuer Marina risks mucking up a visit to the vet.
01:16I haven't even started mucking out yet.
01:18I'm so bit behind on my schedule.
01:21I've got to catch up with what I'm doing.
01:23And we have a second round with the expats risking everything to keep us happy on our holds.
01:27I've got a party coming up soon, actually.
01:29It's worrying, because the last thing you want to do at a party is run out of alcohol.
01:43Piglet, the poor panda.
01:45The poor panda.
01:46What are you doing?
01:48Hey.
01:48In Benidorm, it's playtime for Paula and her pooch, Piglet.
01:52Are you hungry?
01:53I reckon she is.
01:55It's her favourite day, Monday, isn't it?
01:58Get roast beef and all the leftovers from yesterday.
02:01Since moving to Spain seven years ago...
02:04Morning.
02:05Good morning.
02:06Coventry-lust Paula's been serving up her famous roast dinners all over town.
02:11This is the first order of the day.
02:14And there we have it.
02:16It's the best roast dinner here in Benidorm.
02:19This is one of the best Sunday lunches I've ever had.
02:22But while her food is a hit, her attempts to run three of her own pubs...
02:26Look what's happened to my lovely bar.
02:28...have been less successful.
02:30I am just heartbreak.
02:32And Paula's fourth establishment...
02:34Oh, the joys have opened the bar.
02:36Never even opened.
02:40I think I've got everybody's share of bad luck.
02:43In fact, if I didn't have bad luck, I'd have none at all.
02:45Is this for you?
02:47I must have broke a mirror before I left England.
02:50Because seven years of bad luck I have had.
02:52Piglet.
02:53Oh, you want to sit up there, do you?
02:55You want to sit?
02:57Here we go.
02:58Paula now has a new job, but bad luck continues to follow her.
03:02This little one is my baby.
03:05She's like my child, and gets treated like one.
03:10Piglet, she'd been bitten by something, and she was really poorly.
03:13And I thought I was going to lose her.
03:15Two weeks I couldn't even leave the house because she was so poorly and on medication.
03:20Everything was very, very hard.
03:23Wow.
03:24You've cleared the bowl.
03:26Today, Paula's hoping to put an end to her misfortune once and for all.
03:32Today, we're on a little treasure hunt trail for good luck.
03:37You know, out with the old and in with the new, and see if we can find some good luck
03:42along our way.
03:43And she's leaving nothing to chance before she even starts her quest.
03:47I've got some salt in my hand.
03:49It's going over my shoulder.
03:51So this is the first lot of the good luck trail.
03:54Here we go.
03:55Not so lucky for anybody on the street below, though, Paula.
03:59Right.
04:00So that's the first one.
04:02This is my little Buddha.
04:05And as you can see, he's got a silver belly now because he's been rubbed that many times.
04:12So, mate, here's to today.
04:16Today is also the chance to get to know a new friend.
04:21I've only known Chloe a short time, and I work with her.
04:25But she's a real nice girl, and we don't get a chance to actually sort of socialise because I'm in
04:32the kitchen.
04:32She's in the bar.
04:34We get on really well at work.
04:35It's like a little Benidorm daughter.
04:38Hello.
04:39Good morning.
04:40Afternoon.
04:40How are we?
04:41I'm all right.
04:42Are you?
04:42Good.
04:42I'm good.
04:43Hello, Piglet.
04:45Where are you?
04:46There she is.
04:48Hello.
04:49But before they set off, Paula's been sent a sign.
04:53Ah, I've actually put this top on today.
04:56Okay.
04:57I just noticed it's inside out.
04:59You can't change it.
05:00I can't change it because it's bad luck.
05:02Yeah.
05:02It's bad luck to change it.
05:04So I'm now going to have to walk around all day with my top inside out.
05:07If it's seven years bad luck for a broken mirror, I'm trying to think how much it is for an
05:12inside out top.
05:13No harm to keep trying all the little superstitions, I suppose.
05:17It's not going to bring me bad luck.
05:20Right then, shall we make a move?
05:22Okay.
05:24All right.
05:24God knows what today's going to bring.
05:27Bye, Piglet.
05:28Bye, Piglet.
05:28See you later.
05:29And for the first stop on their magical mystery tour, Paula hopes to channel the look of the Irish.
05:41You'll all be good and no runny runnys, no jumping, okay?
05:45You'll be a good kid.
05:49In Aguas de Boussot, it's the start of the day for 55-year-old animal rescuer Marina Scott.
05:57Oh, they're here.
05:58Their horse food's here.
06:00I've got to put everyone away.
06:01Make up your mind, Marina.
06:03Yeah, boy, yeah, boy.
06:05Yeah, boy.
06:06Come on, kids.
06:09I live with three horses, one donkey, one pony, and now 11 dogs.
06:13Ooh, that sounds like a lot of hard work.
06:16Que es muy grande, muy bien.
06:18Marina may have picked up the lingo, but her route to the Costas was the scenic one.
06:22I was born in Leon C., Essex.
06:25I was raised in U.S. Florida.
06:27I went to South Africa and moved to Spain 23 years ago.
06:32I come over here with my mom and my brother.
06:34With the horse food delivery done, it's straight on to the next task.
06:38I haven't even started mucking out yet.
06:40I am so far behind on my daily chores.
06:42But when you love animals as much as Marina...
06:45Blacksmith's coming.
06:46...it's all part of the job.
06:48This is Christian.
06:49This is my blacksmith, yeah.
06:53I've been rescuing animals since I was 12 years old.
06:56Because my mom was doing the same thing as myself.
06:59This was my mom's house.
07:00She passed away two years ago.
07:02And my mom was a person of horses.
07:04She had 12 horses here.
07:06So when she passed away, obviously, I had to come here and take care of the horses.
07:10And this place is heaven for horses.
07:12So there's no need for the long face, Pinocchio.
07:15The land here is 2,000 square meters.
07:18My mom had stables put in for the horses.
07:21I mean, it's my paradise.
07:23It's absolutely beautiful.
07:24A place to where when you're doing what I'm doing with the animals, it's absolutely perfect.
07:30By the way.
07:31And they get the five-star treatment.
07:34Housekeeping.
07:36As long as I do this every morning, it'll take me two hours.
07:40This is why it's very important that I get it done every day.
07:43If I don't do it every day, two hours turns into five hours the next day.
07:47It's not just time Marina invests in her menagerie.
07:50I am extremely lucky that I have what I want, thanks to my grandparents.
07:55I've got properties in England, in Leon C, along the Broadway.
07:59I've got eight apartments, four shops and a restaurant.
08:03And that's my income here.
08:05I would say 85% goes to the animals.
08:09Marina inherited her love for all things equine from her mom.
08:13But it's the canines that have a special place in her heart.
08:16And four weeks ago, a new addition arrived who needs lots of attention.
08:20Come on, my mom.
08:21Come out and say hello.
08:24So this is Panda.
08:26She had leishmaniosis, terrible disease.
08:28They can die from it if not treated.
08:30Serious breathing problems.
08:32Obviously, you can see her eye.
08:34Marina spent the last month nursing her back to health.
08:37But a major life-changing operation could be the only option for Panda.
08:42So today, she will go back to the vet.
08:44I think they might have to do a blood test to make sure that she's healthy enough.
08:48Hopefully, they will tell me that she can go in for an operation and have her eye taken out.
08:54But with just two hours until the appointment,
08:57Marina needs to move from a trot to a gallop.
08:59I'm so a bit behind on my schedule.
09:02I've got to catch up with what I'm doing.
09:07Coming up, will a makeover break the bank for bar owners Kieran and Gary?
09:13We'll be great.
09:14We'll be all right.
09:15All right.
09:15Pop up.
09:16Yeah.
09:16As long as they don't keep spending too much money.
09:20And it's Paula versus Pigeons in the pursuit of prosperity.
09:24Oh, God.
09:25Oh, my words.
09:27Look, I'm not overly keen.
09:28I didn't really want them all over me.
09:38For many of us, a holiday on the costas wouldn't be complete without visiting some of the local watering holes.
09:46Cheers, lads.
09:47But running a boozer in Benny isn't all bottoms up and up on yourself, barman.
09:52People say to me I'm mad.
09:54I'm crackers.
09:56Coming to Benadol to open a bar.
09:58There's a lot of bars.
10:00You're all in competition with each other to get as much customers as you can.
10:03And with the battle for business so fierce, we're revisiting an old friend who came up with a plan to
10:09bring the bar to you.
10:11Ah, that's the best mojito on the costa del sol.
10:14Cheers.
10:15Cheers.
10:16Peterborough lad Danny runs his own mobile party service.
10:21I can go to a villa with 200 people in it.
10:24I can supply them with absolutely everything, make them cocktails, so they can sit back and relax and enjoy their
10:29own party.
10:30And if I can make money and enjoy what I'm doing, I'm a happy man, really.
10:35He's just got his biggest booking yet.
10:37His first expat party.
10:38And it's the chance to get noticed by potential new clients.
10:42We've got a party coming up soon, actually.
10:44And they want us to supply the bar and everything like that.
10:47So I don't really want to skimp on any preparations.
10:50I want to make sure everything is absolutely perfect.
10:53First job on Danny's list.
10:54Stock up on everything he needs to keep the party lubricated and to make sure he stays on budget and
11:01doesn't forget anything, he's written it all down.
11:04I've only gone and left my bloody list at home.
11:06Without his list, Danny's improvising.
11:09I will start with my spirits.
11:13Six litres is enough, I reckon.
11:15As a start, anyway.
11:18Now, Malibu, I'm not going to buy the expensive stuff.
11:22It's coconut rum.
11:22That saves me about five, six euros a bottle.
11:25It's nearly half the price, so no-brainer on that.
11:27How on earth, you know, you sort of gauge who drinks what and how much they drink.
11:33It's really, really hard.
11:35Theoretically, I should be covered.
11:36But it's worrying, because the last thing you want to do at a party is run out of alcohol.
11:42Well, looking at how much is on your trolley, I don't think there's any danger of that.
11:45Now, to see if he's on budget.
11:48I'm hoping to be spending around about $7.50, but because I forgot my list, I don't know.
11:57We're at $5.50.
11:59So I've got another $200 to play with.
12:03So that's $6.50.
12:04So it's actually 100 euros cheaper than what I thought, which is I'm pleased with.
12:08Ka-ching!
12:10Hasta luego!
12:11With the van loaded, it's time to get to the venue and unload it.
12:16This part we're going to now, it's only a small group, and I'm going to go and do it all
12:19on my own.
12:20The bash is taking place at a home in the hills near Coeen, not far from where he lives.
12:26Let's find out where we are.
12:27I just said, you're in the hills, near Coeen.
12:29Glenn!
12:32Glenn and his girlfriend Andrea are throwing their annual summer shindig, but having their own barman is a first.
12:39He will be bringing something new to the party, I'm sure.
12:42Yeah, I think it will add some value to the day, definitely.
12:47It's flat.
12:52So a bar of 30 seconds, sir.
12:54Oh, so that's what they mean by pop-up bar.
12:57I saw one of his advertisements for one of the parties that he'd done, and I thought, do you know
13:01what, that looks really good.
13:02So I contacted him and ended up booking him.
13:05This is the only thing when you wish I had two people, is when you've got to get the fridge
13:09out.
13:10They're not ridiculously heavy, but they can just sometimes be a bit awkward.
13:16Look at the arm, super, super strong.
13:20I'm going to give myself a hernia at the making, right?
13:23If this is a hit, it could lead to more work with the party-loving expat community.
13:28These are the people which have parties all year round, so it's not necessarily the holiday makers.
13:33And hopefully I get to meet a few more of the locals and take it from there.
13:38It should be a really good, eventful party.
13:41Well, let's hope so.
13:44As much as us Brits love a good knees up...
13:47It's been a lovely night. Great night. Pleasure to meet you.
13:50..and you, sir, there may be something we love even more.
13:56Yep, you guessed it, our four-legged friends.
13:59We all want to cuddle, don't we?
14:01And while us Brits are undoubtedly a nation of animal lovers...
14:05We have three parrots and five tortoises.
14:08I've got a chihuahua.
14:09My dog's called Wally, and I do love him, yeah.
14:13It's stiff competition for who takes the dog biscuit as the number one fan.
14:18I have to get a little pony my side.
14:20Lovely, Colin.
14:24But Marina's surely a front-runner.
14:28Ooh, there we go.
14:30And in Aguas de Bussot, she's almost done mucking out.
14:34So this is where the manure of the horses has been going for the last 20 years,
14:38and all the farmers, they come and take it.
14:40Very eco-friendly, Marina.
14:42But a month ago, her daily dung disposal ended with a new addition.
14:47Panda.
14:48Normal day, taking my wheelbarrow outside, full of poop to dump,
14:52and I looked at the side of my gate, and there's a little package there.
14:55I thought, oh, my God, it's a dog.
14:57And I thought it was dead.
14:58I picked up this bundle, and then she started shaking.
15:02And I looked up, and I just saw this eye.
15:05She was racing the cage just for puppies.
15:07It's thought Panda was abandoned after she'd served her purpose for the puppy breeders.
15:12These are the new trend.
15:14The American Bully pocket, they make them as low to the ground as possible and as wide as possible.
15:21They are selling these puppies easily, easily for 3,000 euros.
15:25Panda's tough past may be behind her, but there's a lot of work to do to make sure her future
15:30is a happy one.
15:32She'll stay with me for the rest of her life, if necessary.
15:35When I see a dog that's going through suffering or that's been abandoned,
15:39I'm obsessed about helping these dogs.
15:41And Marina's not the only one.
15:43Hi, Marina.
15:45Hi.
15:45How are you doing?
15:47All right.
15:50I'm running a little bit late.
15:52Just finish off here.
15:53Okay.
15:54Change my shoes, because they're stinky.
15:57Yeah, we don't want horse poo in the car.
15:59Yeah.
16:00You certainly don't.
16:03Hey, Panda.
16:04She's put on weight.
16:05She has.
16:05She's put a little bit of weight on.
16:07Marina's friend Sue works for the local dog rescue charity.
16:12Marina's just, she's amazing.
16:14She's mad as a box of frogs, but she's amazing.
16:16Come on, kids.
16:20The organisation's paying for Panda's long list of medical treatments.
16:24By the time everything's done, it's going to be up to €2,000, possibly more.
16:31Blimey.
16:32Today they have an appointment to find out if Panda is well enough to have an operation on her eye.
16:38Okay.
16:40Let's get you in this side.
16:42And they're also going to get fellow rescue dog, Katty, checked out, too.
16:47Right.
16:47Let's get Fetty.
16:49Go on.
16:49In you go.
16:51Okay.
16:52We ready?
16:54Marina's had a busy morning with her horses and should already be at the surgery.
16:58Can you just let the vets know or run a little bit late?
17:01Run a little bit late.
17:03Hola, buenas, buenas días.
17:05Mira, estoy en Marina's car y estoy en, um, en viaje hasta el veterinario.
17:10Estoy diez minutos tarde.
17:13Vale, gracias.
17:14Vale.
17:18I did phone the right vet, didn't I?
17:20You'll soon find out, Marina, and let's hope you've not missed your appointment.
17:33My favourite pet is Buna, my old dog de Bordeaux.
17:36And this is my favourite photo.
17:43She's my favourite pet.
17:45She's ten and she's the most adorable, lovely dog in the world.
17:49She's gentle, she's sweet, she's loving, she's playful, she's everything you can imagine in a dog.
17:55She's just the best dog ever.
18:02The worst thing about her is that she stinks because she's old now and she sloppers all over the house
18:06and makes such a mess.
18:14She's just the best dog you can ever imagine.
18:26You want to sit inside, yeah?
18:28Well, yeah, I think if there's any seats, that is.
18:30Yeah, we'll go in and have a nose.
18:32Back in Benidorm, Paula and Chloe are searching for some good luck to end Paula's seven-year run of the
18:38bad kind.
18:39What are you going to have?
18:41You're an Irish boy.
18:43You have to have a Guinness.
18:45What are you going to have?
18:46A water.
18:47Yeah.
18:48And a pan to Guinness.
18:49Yeah.
18:50The friends are hoping the famous Gaelic good fortune will rub off on them.
18:55OK, bottom's up.
18:57So, what are you up to?
18:59Right, well, I've been here quite some, well, seven years.
19:03In Benidorm?
19:04Yeah.
19:05I had nothing but bad luck, so I thought, let's do a bit of a good luck trail.
19:09I have a horse, you hear a bit in the back?
19:11You're welcome to come in and rub us.
19:13Oh, why not?
19:14Yeah?
19:15Well, that's a bit of luck, Paula.
19:17Literally.
19:19Ah.
19:20And it says, good luck, Anna.
19:22Can't see it.
19:23Oh, fab.
19:24I'd kiss it, but I can't reach.
19:26Good start, yeah.
19:28Do you know what?
19:29The luck of the Irish.
19:30Well, I'm half Irish, so maybe the first half of my life I didn't get it.
19:33Maybe now this half I'm going to get it.
19:36Paula may have found her first lucky charms, but Chloe's still in the dark.
19:41So, Paula, why are we here?
19:43I know we don't get a chance to talk properly at work or anything, so there's a whole big
19:50list of things that's happened along the way, and not all been great.
19:55So, my thinking behind all of this was, like, next year is going to be my year.
20:00Yeah.
20:01As in, this is what I was thinking last year.
20:02Yeah.
20:02Let's just start again.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Because I'm not taking any more bad luck from anywhere or anyone.
20:10Obviously, everything you've been through, you're still wanting to try, you're still
20:14wanting to give it a go.
20:15Someone that's been only here for a fraction of how long you've been here.
20:20So, it's good to see that it's not all, oh, it's amazing, it's amazing, you live on holiday.
20:26You know, it is hard.
20:28And so, seeing someone like you do really well, have a bad time, but not let it destroy you,
20:37it's really made me feel like, oh, I can do this.
20:41I can stay here, no matter what.
20:44After all, it's not how many times you fall down that counts, but how you get up again.
20:49So, anyway, cheers.
20:50Cheers.
20:51Cheers.
20:51Are we off?
20:52You got everything?
20:53Yeah.
20:54Perfect.
20:54I do believe so, yeah.
20:55There's no.
20:56Come on then.
20:56All right.
20:58But Paula's quest to change her future is far from over.
21:01What shall we do next?
21:03We are going to Duff Park.
21:06Don't like birds?
21:10Coming up, we revisit new bar owners Kieran and Gary and their battle not to blow their
21:16budget.
21:17I've still got some money in the bag to pay the bills.
21:19I've still got the bills I've done for the next month or two.
21:21You still want to try and keep all the spending out of the tip.
21:24And Paula's new food delivery service has customers flocking.
21:28Oh, hello.
21:29Can I open the bag?
21:45Not bad if I do say so myself.
21:46Back near Coeen, mobile barman Danny's ready to serve up everything from Mai Tai's to Mojitos
21:52at his first expat party.
21:55There you go, my lovely.
21:56All right, except no responsibility for what happens after that, all right?
21:59Daddy's hoping that if he smashes this soiree, it could lead to more business from the large
22:04expat community.
22:06I'll have a second one of these, please.
22:08And party thrower Andrea's making the mostest of being the hostess by leaving the drinks
22:13to Danny.
22:13But there's one thing she forgot to mention.
22:16Yeah, there might be a few more than Danny was thinking were actually coming today.
22:21Somewhere between 30 and 40 or plus, we're not sure.
22:24Well, those 40-odd guests have turned up with a thirst.
22:28Hopefully, Danny's stocked his bar well enough.
22:30I think they'd like to have a bit of a party, so they're taking full advantage of the cocktail
22:33bar.
22:34Danny, I'm admiring the way you're coping.
22:36And the hard work is paying off.
22:38How you doing, fella?
22:38All right?
22:39Yeah, I'm good.
22:39So what are we having?
22:40Two meatos and a pina colada?
22:41Two meatos and two pina coladas, please.
22:44We've got to do it coming up.
22:45I want you to do that for me, please.
22:47But it has to be better than this.
22:51Danny secured another booking from party guest Perry.
22:54It's my 60th party, and Danny will be an essential part of that, and it'll be a really
22:59good do.
23:00It'll be great.
23:01We're not going to do it unless we've got you there.
23:03Yeah, no problem, mate.
23:04And Perry's not the only one.
23:06Elvie's hired him for her bash, too.
23:08Danny, he will be my barman next week on my party.
23:14Forget about Ibiza being the party capital of Europe.
23:16Turns out it's actually a small town near Malaga.
23:19Had a few people approach me local, so it's been successful, yeah?
23:23We're happy.
23:23Andrea's happy, isn't he?
23:24Yeah.
23:25Right, Saskia.
23:25I think he's done excellent, yeah.
23:27It just runs a lot smoother.
23:29People get the drinks that they want, and it means as the host that you can just enjoy
23:34the party.
23:35So, yeah, happy day for everybody.
23:37Great day.
23:39Nice work, Danny.
23:40It looks like you really made a splash.
23:51Oh, look, there's a bargain space, yay.
23:54Look at this.
23:56In El Campeo, Marina and Sue are running late.
24:00Here we go.
24:01Come on, then.
24:02Here you go.
24:04Fingers crossed they've made it in time.
24:06Hi there.
24:07We have Cathy and Panda.
24:10I'm going to tell the bit.
24:11Thank you very much.
24:15It's just four weeks since Panda was abandoned outside Marina's house, and made her first
24:20visit to Christina, the vet.
24:22When I first brought her in, well, she couldn't even walk.
24:25She was dehydrated.
24:27So, this dog you see today is 98% different.
24:32I'm sure that Christina's going to see a big difference in Elm, isn't she?
24:35Hello.
24:36Hello.
24:37Hi, Christina.
24:38How are you?
24:39Yeah, fine.
24:40Yeah.
24:40She looks much better today.
24:44I've been waiting to hear that.
24:45Come on, then.
24:47There we go.
24:48So, today we have finished with the injections.
24:50Yes.
24:51And we are doing today the first blood control.
24:54Panda's been getting daily injections for a blood disease, which, unless brought under
24:58control, makes it dangerous to fix her other ailments.
25:03So, her eye?
25:04The eye, I'm pretty sure that maybe we have to remove it.
25:08But I prefer that she's really strong.
25:11Stronger.
25:11Stronger.
25:12Okay?
25:12To know that Elismani is under control, that she is with a good red cells level.
25:19To do everything.
25:20So, I can't do anything until the blood tests come and you can see how good the blood is.
25:24And then we can make a plan from after that.
25:27First blood.
25:28First blood.
25:29Marina was hoping to set a date for the operation, but that will have to wait for a while.
25:35How long will the results take for the middle of the test?
25:37Three, four days.
25:39After the blood test.
25:40Oh, good girl.
25:42Good girl.
25:43Time to check Panda's breathing.
25:46Yeah, the test is much, much better.
25:48And now the test is completely normal.
25:50And finally, a pedicure.
25:54Oh, that's better.
25:55Does that look better?
25:57She's going to walk much better.
26:00Checkup done.
26:01What's the verdict from vet Cristina?
26:04First time that she came, we thought that she was dying.
26:08Marina has done a really good job.
26:10She's improving a lot and I think the best treatment is always the love tender care.
26:18I reckon that's a job well done, Marina.
26:20That was really good.
26:22According to Cristina, she's doing amazing.
26:24She's doing really well.
26:25Yes.
26:25She's getting there.
26:27And when she said that we didn't know if she'd make it, would live or die, I didn't know that
26:31because they never told you that, would they?
26:33So, for her to tell me that now, I'm just like so, I'm over the moon.
26:37So, I will call you when the results are ready, but probably next check, we'll do it more or less
26:42in three weeks.
26:44Okay.
26:44Okay.
26:45Fantastic.
26:45Thank you very much.
26:47Thank you very much, Cristina.
26:48Bye-bye.
26:49Four months later, Panda was finally well enough to get the operation on her eye and is being looked after
26:55at home by her dog mom, Marina.
26:58And we wish her a speed of recovery.
27:08With so many of us heading to the costas on our holes, it takes an army to keep us all
27:13fed and watered.
27:14Yeah, getting battered a little bit.
27:16We'll be all right.
27:17While Danny's still working hard serving up his cocktails, we're going back to the time some new recruits join the
27:24hospitality ranks.
27:25Kieran, his Finnish girlfriend, Mila, and their dog, Susie.
27:30I don't know, is it our bedroom or Susie's?
27:32We kind of like to call it our bedroom.
27:35The reality is that the dog just decides.
27:37Yeah.
27:38Good girl, Susie.
27:39The couple recently invested in a Benel Mad in a bar with their friends Gary and Yvonne.
27:44And when the opportunity came up, it was a no-brainer for Kieran.
27:49I've been doing this all for 20 years.
27:51I love people.
27:51I love public.
27:52I just love the bio jobs.
27:54Kieran may know his way around the bar, but he couldn't have done this without Gary.
27:58The pair have gone halves to get the pub up and running.
28:01Another day in paradise.
28:02There we go.
28:04Oh, you'll have it.
28:05Yes.
28:05And they have plans to put their own mark on the place.
28:09But the pool table itself, obviously the previous owner, they were mad into the pool, as you can see.
28:13But for us, we want to create some sort of ambience in the bar.
28:16And so I think for this, for what it's worth, it's best if we take this out.
28:20Get more tables and chairs in for the winter.
28:22And hopefully go from there and just see what happens.
28:25But yeah, big ideas.
28:26While Kieran's the ideas man, Gary is the money man.
28:29We be grand.
28:30We be all right.
28:31All right.
28:32I'd vote, yeah.
28:33As long as you don't keep spending too much money.
28:36But Kieran's already worked out how to keep the costs down.
28:40We've got a friend coming in.
28:41And he's going to do all the design more.
28:43And he's going to do all the building more.
28:44Sounds to me like he'd be doing all the work then, Kieran.
28:47The bar is staying open during the renovations to keep the money coming in to pay for it all.
28:52Our targets are a few hundred euros a day.
28:55That would cover our rents, our electricity.
28:58We're on target so far.
29:00We're doing okay from what we've generated from the bar so far.
29:02We've still got some money in the bank to pay the bills with.
29:04Still, I've got the bills all done for the next month or two.
29:06We still want to try and keep all the spending out of the till.
29:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:10That's not the only way the pair need to tighten their belts.
29:14Kieran, we've got to do something about this fridge.
29:16Suck it in, you'll be grand.
29:17We're not prying, but now we're going.
29:19Take about six inches off the bar.
29:21Or take my six inches off the belly.
29:22Yeah, six inches off the belly is probably better.
29:27No new bar will be complete without a new logo and Kieran's keeping it in the family.
29:32Well, what's crack?
29:33How's crack?
29:34His graphic designer brother, another Gary, is doing the honours.
29:38I hope you're not going to rip me off at this, eh?
29:40No, no, no.
29:41Meat reads, meat reads.
29:42Good press, good press.
29:43Brunner reads.
29:44I should hope so.
29:45Well, a logo for most people would definitely cost between 100 to 200 euro
29:49for me to start up from scratch.
29:51But, yeah, I'll do it for free for my brother because I love him.
29:54Well, I'm sure he appreciates it.
29:57You happy with that, yeah?
29:57Definitely going with that one.
29:58And you want to keep it black and white background?
30:01Leave it at that.
30:02That's absolutely perfect.
30:03Great.
30:03Yeah, no, that'd be nice.
30:04Only talking about 10 attempts for the ground.
30:07Rome wasn't built in a day.
30:09Rome wasn't built in a day.
30:10No, that's brilliant.
30:11That's the end.
30:14Branding sorted, Kieran can make room for the work to start
30:17as Gary takes on a more, well, supervisory role.
30:20Hey, you just sit down and observe your ground.
30:24Don't feel any way guilty or anything.
30:25That's my job, Sam.
30:28I'm just going to sit back, relax, chill, watch the guys working,
30:33tell them I've missed a bit.
30:34That'll be me.
30:35Under Gary's watchful eye, the builders can begin.
30:38Look to me.
30:39You ready?
30:40Right, so, might as well get a mix on.
30:43They're making light work of it, but nothing's going to waste.
30:46What I've done is all the wood that we've took off the walls now...
30:49OK, so just recycle it a bit.
30:50Recycle it a little bit.
30:51It's probably saved you 200, 300 euros on wood and materials.
30:55Oh, brilliant.
30:56That's what I like to hear.
30:57Jobs are good, isn't it?
30:58That's a bit.
30:58Oh, yeah, but that's what I'm good.
31:00Mila and Susie are keen to see how the revamp is going.
31:03Hello.
31:04Well, I see you've gotten a lot of work done.
31:06Yeah, it's looking good.
31:07It's looking good.
31:08I'm pretty excited.
31:08Well done, yes.
31:10Pretty well done.
31:11But there's still a lot of work to do before they can reveal their new look to their regulars.
31:24Suerte is the Spanish word for luck, and us Brits are counting our blessings on the costas.
31:29I can't believe that for me Spain's still got its magic.
31:32I'm very lucky to live here, I am.
31:34How lucky are we?
31:35Very lucky.
31:36We'll take a bit of good luck at work.
31:38This is going to be better than March.
31:41Beginner's look.
31:42The first time I performed on stage, I wore my favourite leopard print dress, and obviously
31:46it went really well, so now I'm using leopard print as my lucky charm.
31:48That's the one for me.
31:50Look at that.
31:52This will be perfect, won't it?
31:54Yeah.
31:54Looking stylish and lucky, Lucy.
31:57Fortune is also on our side when we're relaxing.
32:00Come on.
32:01Yeah.
32:02He's like, that's just luck.
32:03No, there's no luck.
32:05It's skill.
32:06Some people are born lucky.
32:07Yeah, it works.
32:08I am a very lucky person, according to my wife.
32:11Looks like your winning streak is over, John.
32:13Some of us are lucky in love.
32:15Do you want the most luckiest thing is?
32:17You, because you got me.
32:18You got me.
32:20Just a little symbol of what could be a little look for the future.
32:25Oh.
32:26Everything's going lucky anyway, isn't it?
32:28Yeah.
32:28Oh, it's really nice.
32:31Oh, but when it comes to getting a lucky break, there's one fellow we turn to more than any other.
32:36I like the candle in the Buddha.
32:38Do you think it gives us luck?
32:40It weighs a ton.
32:41It takes two of us to pick it up, doesn't it?
32:43This is my Buddha.
32:45And obviously, on a Buddha, you always rub their tummy for good luck.
32:49Fingers crossed it works for you, Joy.
32:59Why are we here?
33:01I've got to see if all my people make it.
33:04I'm not going near them.
33:06I'm not going near them.
33:08Back in Burydome, Paula and Chloe have reached the next stop on their good luck trail, the town's famous Dove
33:14Park.
33:15Oh, Paula, I can't go any closer.
33:18Not the best place if you have a fear of birds like Chloe.
33:21Paula, look at that lady.
33:22Oh, my word.
33:23Oh, my God, she's got one on her head.
33:25She's got more than one on her head.
33:28Doves are believed to be signs of good fortune, and Paula's hoping for a lucky, if slightly messy, encounter.
33:37Yesterday, when I was walking Piglet, a bird had only got my arm, and 24 hours too early.
33:45So, yeah, we'll see if it happens again today.
33:47You're taking this very seriously, Paula.
33:52Let's go, Paula.
33:54So, we're buying food now.
33:55But having seen just how friendly her new feathered friends are, Paula's having second thoughts.
34:00Look, I'm not overly keen. I didn't really want them all over me.
34:03Well, it's a sign of good luck. You have to.
34:06Oh, God. Oh, my word.
34:10First job, get some bait to entice them to drop a little bit of luck.
34:14Can I get the smallest bag?
34:15Yeah.
34:16We'll just take these one.
34:17Yeah, OK, what are they? Two...
34:19These are just the peanuts.
34:20OK.
34:21I'll eat them.
34:24And it turns out peanuts are their favourite.
34:28Oh, hello. Oh, I've got a baby on me.
34:31I haven't opened the bag yet.
34:33I...
34:34Oh, my God, I haven't even opened the bag.
34:38Oh, hello.
34:39Can I...
34:40Look, how can I open the bag?
34:43Sorry, wait a minute.
34:45It's OK.
34:45Yeah, that's enough for me, Paula.
34:47You're on your own now.
34:49You're on your own.
34:53The bag's not even open properly yet.
34:55Right, you're bound to have the best luck in the world.
34:58Hello.
35:01I'm sure there's one down my boot.
35:03You'd never make it as a scarecrow, Paula.
35:06OK, I've got nothing left.
35:08It's all gone.
35:09It's all been eaten.
35:11Come on.
35:13Come on.
35:14Off you go.
35:15Off you go.
35:17Choo-choo.
35:18Right.
35:20Wow, that was an experience.
35:23It certainly was.
35:24But have they granted you some good luck?
35:27Can I clean?
35:28Of course.
35:31You've got my teeth.
35:33That was the most terrifying experience I've ever went through.
35:37Oh, I quite like that.
35:38My life.
35:39Oh, hello.
35:40I think you've made a friend, Paula.
35:42I've got nothing left.
35:43Oh, there we go.
35:44There we go.
35:48Do you know what?
35:49Considering I didn't think I would like that, I enjoyed that.
35:53The doves may not have supplied the intended good omen,
35:56but this trip hasn't been a complete failure.
35:58Paula, I think you've...
35:59Got a feather in my boob.
36:01White feathers are good luck.
36:02Oh, and I've got a nut.
36:07There's just one stop left on Paula's good luck trail.
36:10And the next.
36:12Yeah.
36:13Food.
36:13Food, yeah.
36:14We need food.
36:15Definitely food.
36:16But will they find food that also brings them good fortune?
36:24Coming up, there's no chickening out for Paula on her search for good luck.
36:28Find your wish, Brayton.
36:30Make a wish.
36:31The optimism is all there.
36:32But Kieran's not relying on luck to make back what he's spent.
36:36Does anybody want to give me money?
36:38No?
36:38No?
36:51Back in Benelmadina, bar owners Kieran and Gary have been busy giving their place a makeover.
36:57And it's almost finished.
36:58Just in time to welcome the evening crowd.
37:01More or less, everything's changed.
37:03We're still waiting on a few bits of furniture, like chairs and stuff to come along.
37:06But all the fabric's been done, the back walls, all the paneling's been taken out.
37:10We were very lucky to find these.
37:12They go quite nice with the bar itself.
37:14It's a steam punk club.
37:15It's a steam punk club.
37:17I think we've created a proper pub, a nice pub.
37:20So because winter's coming soon enough, we decided, right, let's make it something nice and cosy and a proper pub
37:24for people to come down, have the crack, have the banter.
37:27And then just enjoy the experience when you come to the bar.
37:32With most of the work done, it's time to tot up what it cost and, of course, Gary's been keeping
37:37tabs.
37:38We budgeted ourselves about four grand.
37:40Yeah.
37:40It was four grand.
37:41We just went a little bit over, just a little bit.
37:43Yeah, maybe closer to five.
37:45Five grand, not bad for an entirely new bar, but it could have been a lot more pricey.
37:51Previous, we got the boys in to start doing a bit of building more for us.
37:53In fact, it did do quite a bit of the walk, but it was starting to add up a little
37:57bit.
37:57So we just decided we had a bit of time, let's do it ourselves.
38:00So this is what we've been doing.
38:01Actually, most of this has been done through our own hands, which made us even more proud of it.
38:05Just let's hope that this does succeed and people do quite enjoy what we've built.
38:10With the building work done, the gang are just putting the finishing touches to the bar to make it feel
38:15brand new.
38:17On this side, rather than doing wallpaper all over, we decided to paint the wall.
38:24So Yvonne and I were talking that little decorated mirrors would be nice, just glamming it up a little.
38:29And Yvonne found these mirrors in a local shop, and they just happened to match the pattern of the fabric
38:35that we chose earlier really nicely as well.
38:37So I'm really pleased with that.
38:39And while Kieran and the team are giving the whole pub a new lease of life, there's one thing that's
38:44not getting a revamp.
38:46Our buyer's called the back of the shaft. We didn't name it.
38:48No, it's had the same name for the past 20 years at least, not longer than that, 30 years.
38:53We still don't really know where the name came from, but we have been told the past two owners have
38:57been Scottish.
38:58So it's something to do with the mining in Scotland.
39:01I'd be very foolish to change that name.
39:03Yeah, we're not going to change it.
39:05As the regulars arrive at the new bar with the old name...
39:09Does anybody want to give me money? No?
39:13The renovation is getting its first reviews.
39:16We like to come to the bars where we know.
39:19We get made welcome, and it's like home to home, like family.
39:23And that's what we like about it.
39:25I've now lived in Spain for coming up on a year.
39:29I look for a good bar as friendliness, first of all, a welcome as you come in the door.
39:34The customers think it's been worth it, but what about the owners?
39:38I think the feedback's been amazing, though, hasn't it?
39:40I think people enjoy themselves, definitely.
39:41A lot of people comment on the difference in the bar.
39:43There's a different atmosphere.
39:45They're working in a crack.
39:46Since the renovations are almost bound for themselves, look where.
39:49You should be.
39:50Here's to you and your new pub.
39:56Back in Benidorm...
39:58Here we go.
39:59Order some chicken.
40:00Chicken?
40:01Chicken, chicken.
40:02Yeah.
40:03After a memorable encounter with some live birds,
40:06Boll's hoping this next one will be less feisty, but just as lucky.
40:11Uno pollo completa.
40:13Si.
40:13And salada.
40:15Y patas.
40:15Papas frites.
40:16Perfect.
40:17Chicken, salad and chips.
40:19Well, you can't go wrong with that.
40:21Quanto es?
40:22Cuenta.
40:2370, 75.
40:26Muchas gracias.
40:27Thank you very much.
40:28Have a good day.
40:29Do you like that?
40:30Go down near the beach.
40:31Beach?
40:32Yeah.
40:32Yeah.
40:32OK.
40:33Nice view.
40:34Picnic with a view.
40:35Take a pic.
40:36Paula and workmate Chloe are on a good-look trail.
40:39So far, they've rubbed a horseshoe and met some lucky doves.
40:43This is their third and final stop.
40:45Shall we sit on this?
40:47Might as well.
40:48I think so.
40:49As well as being a tasty treat, Paula has a plan for this particular piece of poultry.
40:54Find your wishbone and make a wish.
40:57Is that it there?
40:58You found that quick.
40:59I find that one.
41:01Getting the bigger half of the wishbone is considered lucky, but who will it be?
41:06Ready?
41:08Three, two, one, go.
41:12Ah, you look simple, Paula.
41:14Quick, make a wish.
41:15But did you make your wish?
41:16Yeah.
41:17Well, come on then.
41:18Spill the magic beans.
41:19I can't tell you what the wish is, but you can't wish for something material type thing,
41:25if you know what I mean.
41:25Yeah, of course.
41:26So, I think a good working life, health, happiness, good friends, stuff that you can share with people.
41:38Yeah.
41:38And if other good things come along, then great.
41:42It's nothing material I'm trying to get out of being on a good look trail, but just no bad look.
41:48Yeah.
41:49Well, basically.
41:50As well as hopefully changing her fortune, today's been the chance to cement a friendship.
41:54Oh, do you know what?
41:55It's been a really good day.
41:56Nice to spend time with you.
41:57Get to know you more.
41:58Yeah.
41:58You get to know me more.
42:01But just to be away from work, not look at your phone, not, you know, just literally totally chilled out,
42:08having a good laugh.
42:09Yeah.
42:10And doing stuff, especially the birds.
42:13Yeah.
42:14I've never done before.
42:15Exactly.
42:15It's been a really nice, good day.
42:18Good.
42:18And the, um, the optimism is all there.
42:21Yeah.
42:22Hopefully something will bring you good luck.
42:25It has to.
42:26Yeah.
42:27It has to.
42:28Fingers crossed it's the start of a new and luckier chapter for Paula.
42:33We should have got more napkins.
42:35No one ever thought about that, did we?
42:37No.
42:38You should have wished for some clothing.
42:40Thank you very much.
42:41Thank you for an amazing day.
42:42It's been brilliant.
42:43Yes.
42:44Oh, thoroughly enjoyed it.
42:46Good.
42:46And we wish you the very best of luck.
42:51Next time on The Costas.
42:53I'm in a huge rationale.
42:55Val hits the town looking her witchy best.
42:59Paige volunteers her talents for a special crowd.
43:02They're all up for a laugh, so that's really nice.
43:05And Adrian and Debbie hope it will be love at first flight for their latest arrive.
43:09Let's see what happens.
43:11There she goes.
43:25We'll see you next time.
