00:00Israel and Iran traded airstrikes early Friday in the midst of a war that has sent shockwaves
00:06through the global economy and risks drawing Iran's Arab neighbors directly into the conflict.
00:11The exchange came as millions of Iranians observed Nauru's, the Persian New Year holiday
00:17and tradition dating back millennia. As Israel pounded Tehran with airstrikes,
00:23activists reported hearing strikes around the capital, Tehran,
00:26and many Iranians stayed indoors, abandoning the usual travel or gatherings this year.
00:32In Israel, local media reported blasts across Jerusalem with sirens and booms sounding across
00:38the city. The new attacks came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to refrain
00:45from more strikes on a key Iranian gas field. Israel acted alone against the Slavia gas compound.
00:53Fact number two, President Trump asked us to hold off on future attacks and we're holding out.
01:00Meanwhile, Iran stepped up its attacks on its Gulf neighbors with the United Arab Emirates UAE
01:06reporting heavy explosions in Dubai early Friday as its air defenses intercepted incoming fire over the
01:13city. Authorities in Kuwait reported two oil refineries on fire and Saudi Arabia said its Samref ref refinery in the
01:21red sea port city of Yambu was hit. Iran's attacks, which it calls, quote, retaliatory, came as Muslims observed
01:29Ida Fattir at the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and mosques across the Middle East made
01:35their first call to prayers.
01:43EU leaders clashed with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban over his use of the veto to block a crucial
01:49lifeline of 90 billion euros to Ukraine. Orban is insisting either Ukraine or the European Union
01:55pay for the reconstruction of part of the Druzhba pipeline, a Soviet-era pipeline transporting Russian oil
02:02to Hungary and Slovakia. At a major EU summit in Brussels, which was overshadowed by the war in Iran, EU
02:08member states
02:09expressed their deep disapproval of Orban's behavior, which has been described as blackmail by President of the European
02:15Council, Antonio Costa.
02:18The leaders take the floor to clear condemn the attitude from Viktor Orban, to remember that once a deal, a
02:31deal is a deal, and all the leaders need to honor their word.
02:37And nobody can blackmail the European Council. Nobody can blackmail the European Union institutions.
02:44All 27 countries were meeting to primarily discuss the EU's slow economy, but pressing issues such as gas and oil
02:51prices
02:52and supply were top of the agenda. The EU says it won't send a mission to the Strait of Ormuz,
02:57given the safety concerns,
02:58but have agreed to try and find a solution to the situation in the coming weeks.
03:02Meanwhile, the economic impact of the conflict is worsening by the day. But the EU says it will continue the
03:07path of fully phasing
03:09out Russian gas by 2027, despite ongoing supply issues due to the war.
03:14So we have our clear targets, and we're sticking to our targets. Very important was the discussion, and you just
03:24reiterated it, how important it is that we do the transformation in the energy sector to the clean,
03:34homegrown energy sources. This is, for us, extremely important.
03:39The EU is in a very tricky situation. On the one hand, having nothing to do with the war in
03:43the Iran.
03:43On the other hand, under somewhat of an obligation to ensure the safe passage of Gulf oil and gas through
03:48the Strait of Ormuz. European leaders, as well as the Japanese, have said they have tried to find a path
03:52forward over the coming weeks and days. But they're operating somewhat in the dark, given that there's very
03:57little consultation from allies, the US, about how this war is going to proceed. Shona Murray, Euronews, Brussels.
04:09Denmark and its allies reportedly deployed troops to Greenland in January because they feared a US
04:15invasion, Danish broadcaster DR has reported. DR said it had seen a military operations order dated the 13th
04:24of January, which served as the basis for the deployment of Danish forces in the autonomous
04:29Danish territory as tensions spiked over US President Donald Trump's bid to annex it.
04:35The document described an operation organizing the defense of Greenland immediately after the US
04:41operation in Venezuela to oust President NicolΓ‘s Maduro. In January, several EU nations, including
04:48France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and others, sent troops to Greenland under a Danish-led NATO
04:54exercise dubbed Arctic Endurance. But several military officials told DR that it was a real
05:00deployment and not an exercise. Trump has repeatedly said he believes the US must control Greenland to
05:07ensure its national security and long refused to rule out the use of military force to get it.
05:14After several intense weeks of aggressive remarks that plunged the alliance into its deepest crisis
05:20in years, Trump backed down from his threats in late January, announcing that he had reached
05:25a framework agreement on Greenland with NATO's Secretary General, the details of which remain vague.
05:33This war must be stopped immediately because everyone knows who is the biggest beneficiary
05:39and the cause of the conflict. Strong words from the Qatari Prime Minister on Thursday.
05:44Speaking alongside the Turkish Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said Qatar
05:50is demanding Iran stop attacks on Gulf nations, calling it a, quote, dangerous escalation that is
05:55hitting civilians and threatening global energy security. This comes after Israel targeted Iran's
06:00main natural gas field on Wednesday. Tehran responded quickly, firing missiles at energy
06:06facilities across the Gulf, including sites in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar's key gas hub, Ras Lafhan.
06:12we have re-replaced the
06:16measures of the economic crisis's crisis. We are riffing that it is very clear in Vietnam and
06:28it is a threat at the United States. It is a threat to the Iranian forces and its
06:30measures of security security. We are determined by the countries in Australia,
06:34and from the first time in the future, when it is the Iranian forces of the Iranian forces, it
06:50israeli the world's largest natural gas reserve with iran making the region critical to global
06:58energy supply ras lafan is the world's largest liquefied natural gas export facility and any
07:04disruption there is already being felt european gas prices have surged to their highest level
07:09since the conflict began three weeks ago as concerns grow over supply qatar energy says the
07:14attacks caused extensive damage to its main energy hub in the north of the country adding pressure to
07:20an already volatile global energy market meanwhile u.s president donald trump said in a social media
07:26post that israel acted alone and was solely responsible for wednesday strikes the turkish
07:31foreign minister went even further pointing squarely at israel for opening the region to what he called
07:36a battlefield that threatens global security still hakan fidan said turkish mediators are speaking
07:42to both iran and the u.s to push for de-escalation adding that almost all of the world wants

09:40and this is because energy prices will be higher owing to the war in the middle east the ecb considers
09:48that
09:48the iran war will foster inflation through higher energy prices in the short term yet the bank says its
09:54long-term consequences will depend on the intensity and the duration of the conflict and on how energy
10:00prices affect consumer prices and the economy
