00:0148-year-old Nathan Vikatos pleaded guilty late last year to the horrific murder of his three-year-old son
00:08in the bathroom of a Riverwood unit in 2023.
00:11Family members have given permission for Alexei Vikatos to be identified as the victim in this case after describing him
00:19in statements to the court as a lovely little boy who was deeply loved by the whole family.
00:24Today, they said no sentence would have been long enough for this crime.
00:27He was adored by everybody. He was my sister's only child and we love him and we miss him and
00:34we just can't even believe that this has even happened.
00:38In sentencing, Justice Paul Maguire relayed some of the agreed facts in this case as a large group of relatives
00:44watched on from the public gallery.
00:46The court heard that Vikatos had been increasingly paranoid about police surveillance in the lead-up to this crime, falsely
00:53paranoid because he was not under surveillance.
00:55He also believed that someone may have been trying to show that he was a neglectful father and he was
01:01also a methylamphetamine user.
01:03Just before this crime, the offender's then-partner had made an allegation to police of domestic violence and threats to
01:10kill and Vikatos had been spoken to by officers.
01:14The court heard he fatally stabbed the three-year-old in what he intended to be a murder-suicide.
01:19In custody, he was later recorded as saying,
01:23I know I'll probably get 30 years, but I'd rather that than have my son given to the Department of
01:28Families and Community Services.
01:31Justice Maguire handed down a sentence of 28 and a half years with a non-parole period of 18 and
01:37a half years.
01:38He said he'd been left unimpressed by the offender's very limited expressions of remorse and said,
01:44By killing his own child, the offender has perversely and egregiously breached the trust, affection and love that Alexei deserved.
01:52Vikatos received a 25% discount on sentence for his plea of guilty.
01:57He will not be eligible for parole until the year 2041.
