New marine species have been discovered in the coral sea. The taxidermy species were collected late last year by scientist on board the CSIRO research vessel investigator. The species were found below 200 metres and as deep as 3 kilometres below the surface in the coral sea marine park east of the Great Barrier Reef.

00:02First, when we're on the voyage we sort of collect the specimens, put rough identifications
00:08on them and then once we know what we've got coming back we then look at getting the
00:11taxonomic expertise that might be within another state, it might be within another country
00:18and then we try and bring all those people together through these taxonomic workshops
00:22that we've just held.
00:23So we had over 50 people involved and then experts on particular groups come in and they
00:28examine them and with their knowledge of what they know of these groups they can usually
00:33quite quickly determine some species being new.
00:35Like the cat shark I knew straight away that one was going to likely be a new species but
00:42then on the other hand the skate I originally thought was another species that had already
00:45been described and it's not until we got back and had closer examination of the specimens
00:50that we realised it was different again.
