As Queensland braces for the arrival of Cyclone Narelle, remote communities in the east of the Northern Territory are also making preparations. The Northern Territory government is now evacuating residents to Darwin, just weeks after the Daly River and Palumpa communities were brought to the capital due to flooding.

00:02More than 500 residents of a remote community in the east of the Northern Territory are
00:07being evacuated to Darwin ahead of the impact of tropical cyclone Norell.
00:13The residents of Numbulwa will be staying in a high school gym, which will be fenced
00:18off from the rest of the school, which will continue as normal.
00:22In the east communities of the Northern Territory, Groot Island and Boralula, they're bracing
00:28for impact. It's expected to be a Category 3 system when it does hit the coast, and emergency
00:34services say police have been bolstered in the region to help prepare the communities
00:40for that impact. The system is then expected to track across the Northern Territory. Currently
00:46Catherine is expected to be impacted by the system, which could cause moderate flooding
00:53in that area, which is already inundated with water from severe flooding in the past few
01:00weeks. As the system moves across, it is expected that it will have slight impacts to Darwin.
01:06We will be seeing a little bit of wind and rain, although it isn't expected to cross Darwin as
01:13it moves further west. Now, for flood impacted residents, we've also heard today that public
01:20housing rent will be paused until flood impacted residents can get back into their homes and
01:27pastoralists' rent will also be paused for a period of up to a year. For now, residents
01:34are being warned to get ready in case of emergency, update their cyclone kits and have their emergency
01:42plans ready as tropical cyclone Norell crosses across Australia.
