00:00A major flood threat for Daly River, with roads cut and the waters expected to keep
00:08rising.
00:09The rainfall, the incredibly heavy rainfall totals that we have had over the past week
00:15continue to move through the Catherine River system and the Daly River system.
00:23Last night, Darwin's showgrounds was transformed into an evacuation centre, beds laid out
00:29and boxes of food trucked in, in preparation for the arrival of more than 200 evacuees
00:35from Now You community, who arrived by buses and cars from the flood zone last night.
00:41We were able to have transport ready to go with buses and links.
00:45We obviously had vehicles that could drive into the community so they weren't bogged.
00:48Now in Darwin, evacuees play the waiting game until they can begin to go home.
00:54We are anticipating and planning at this stage for anywhere up to two weeks.
00:58Many of Now You's residents have faced flood evacuations before, including in 2018 and
01:042015.
01:05The last time we got flooded out, it was like a last minute thing.
01:10Everyone was rushing around, but this year was alright.
01:14As water levels rose in the Daly this week, so too did nerves in the community.
01:18The water was getting pretty high.
01:21Some of the people got scared, mainly like the workers out there that worked at the school,
01:27Shire, Ironbuck and all that.
01:30Concerns now turning to the belongings and the pets left behind.
01:35We were really worried because we left the animals back there and the damages to the house and
01:40what we left behind, the furniture and stuff.
01:44We were worried about the house and the community and all the pets that we left them back daily.
01:51We felt sad.
01:55Authorities are anticipating the flood waters to rise further before they can assess possible
02:01damage to the community and natural risks of the area.
02:05Crocodiles are always going to be an issue with the flooding that's coming.
02:09Again, I have stationed a number of police officers, including the brevet sergeant that's
02:14there, based in that community to monitor that.
02:17With the river expected to peak at 14 metres over the weekend, a nervous wait lies ahead.
02:24It's already pointed out.
