Trascrizione
00:00Hey, everybody, and welcome to Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3 2017.
00:04We're back for another year.
00:05We've got a lot of great game content to show you
00:07and a lot of special guests ringing by as well.
00:09But to get things kicked off,
00:10we're going to take another look at Super Mario Odyssey.
00:13Just saw the video in the spotlight.
00:15It's going to be coming out on October 27th, really soon,
00:17and we're going to take a look at some gameplay.
00:19I'm Sam from the Treehouse,
00:21joined by my colleagues from the Treehouse,
00:22Rob, Rob, and Scott on the end,
00:24and we have some very special guests with us for this segment.
00:26We've got the game's producer Koizumi-san
00:29and the game's director Motukura-san.
00:31Thank you both so much for joining us today.
00:37So I know folks are probably really excited to get into the gameplay,
00:40but before we jump in,
00:41there were a lot of really cool reveals in that video,
00:44and I think folks are going to be really interested in
00:46all the different directions that you're taking this game.
00:48But at the core,
00:50there's really kind of a striving philosophy that you've got going on.
00:53I was wondering if you could tell our viewers a little bit more about that.
00:54and if you could tell our viewers a little bit more about that.
01:03First, could I just ask you,
01:04was there anything you saw in there that particularly surprised you or interested you?
01:08I gotta say, the first time I saw that T-Rex,
01:10my heart stopped it.
01:11It was so exciting.
01:24So we have a theme of going on a journey in this game,
01:26but we're also trying to give the player a lot of surprises,
01:28and I think the dinosaur is a really big surprise for most.
01:40and we're also trying to balance that feeling of surprise with some emotional resonance,
01:44Probably be so fun of playing a lot,
01:48and he's an awesome character in history.
01:54Oh yeah!
01:54He's a director of his character.
01:54We're also wanting to balance
01:55that feeling of surprise with some emotional resonance.
01:57Giving people something that's familiar,
01:59that's attractive,
02:00Lo semplicemente!
02:07Avvinto...
02:55always equal a surprise.
02:56So you go around, you throw your head at different things,
02:59you can troll enemies, and you find things that are surprising,
03:01and that gives you a power moon.
03:04So let's get into some gameplay.
03:05Rob, you're going to take us into New Dark City.
03:07I am.
03:08First I'd like to take a quick look at The Odyssey,
03:10for which the game is named.
03:12It's the ship that Mario uses to travel the world,
03:14and it's powered by these power moons,
03:16so you keep needing additional thresholds of them
03:18to get on to the next kingdom.
03:20And just to show off a little bit of the new moves,
03:22obviously there's the hat throw,
03:24You can make it stay in place, which is sometimes valuable.
03:27It can grab things for you.
03:31There's two kinds of coins, which we'll talk about a little later on.
03:34Actually, they're in that little dialog box. We saw Cappy.
03:36Oh, yeah, yeah. Cappy is both the red hat that he's wearing,
03:39and also in his native form, he's a white top hat.
03:44And so one other move that's pretty cool is this circular throw.
03:48Knocks away everything. But let's get down into the city.
03:51And as you saw in the trailer, there's the capture mechanic.
03:53lets you take over things. It also lets you do fairly exotic things,
03:56like turn into electricity, travel through wires.
04:01So how did the capture mechanic come about?
04:04What did you think of the capture mechanic?
04:08Yes. Today, we've made a lot of different techniques.
04:14So when we were making this game, what we started out doing
04:17was making just a huge amount of different gameplay prototypes.
04:25And this capture action was just one of those prototypes.
04:35And this capture action was just one of those prototypes.
04:41So, you know, it was just one of the ideas that came up,
04:43but we worked on it for two or three days,
04:45and it just instantly turned into something that was really fun,
04:48and we decided, well, okay, this should just be the center of this game.
04:52I love how much it encourages that exploration and experimentation
04:55that I think the Mario games along these lines are so known for
04:58when you think about Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine.
05:01Here, we've got so much stuff that just looks interesting,
05:04and you're wondering, okay, what will happen if I throw my cap at it?
05:07You never really know what's going to happen,
05:08so you want to try everything just to see.
05:11You want to try everything just to see.
05:13What do you think you want to try anything?
05:16Yes, I think I'd like to try to throw my cap at it.
05:22Yeah, I definitely hope my people, while they're playing this game,
05:25they just throw their head at everything and try all sorts of different things.
05:30Right now, normally, if you were following the story path of the game,
05:33you'd be talking to Mayor Pauline who wants you to recruit musicians.
05:36There's one there.
05:37But we're going to ignore that right now because there's lots and lots of things
05:40to do beyond following the main story of the game,
05:42like possess rockets and turn into rockets with mustaches.
05:45And why wouldn't you do that if you could?
05:48Actually, that's an interesting note there.
05:50So you mentioned Mayor Pauline, and I think our sharp-eyed viewers will have noticed
05:53that some of the street signs are references to some Donkey Kong characters.
05:57We've got some interesting red girders going on here.
06:00I wonder, Kozumi-san and Monokura-san,
06:02if you can tell us a little bit more about this city,
06:04it's got some interesting backstory.
06:06I think that Pauline has a name called New Donk City.
06:12Can you explain more about the city about this city?
06:17Yes, his name is also,
06:20but Pauline is a Donkey Kong character.
06:22It's related to some of the games.
06:25I don't know if it's related to any of the games.
06:29So certainly you can tell that Pauline is from Donkey Kong,
06:33and the name New Donk City probably leads you to a couple of hints,
06:36but we can't get into too much of it today.
06:38And I like the shirt you're wearing, by the way.
06:40That is a snazzy shirt.
06:41Good choice today.
06:42Good choice, isn't it?
06:43Please look forward to hearing more about that.
06:48I've got to take the long way.
06:49Oh, good luck.
06:52And this is interesting here where we see,
06:54I mean really throughout New Donk City and I think throughout the world,
06:57we've got these really fun playground elements
07:00where you're bouncing on things,
07:02you're jumping on things, you're swinging.
07:04Can you tell our viewers a little bit more about
07:06how you came up with that kind of play mechanic in the game?
07:33So, you know, going back to that prototype process I was talking about before,
07:36we obviously create lots and lots of different ones,
07:38lots and lots of different ones,
07:38lots and lots of different types of things.
07:38for different game ideas and then next what we think about is where to place them within the stage
10:05Super Mario 64 e Super Mario Sunshine.
10:09So this is actually one of the two kingdoms that's going to be playable on the show floor.
10:12The show floor, of course, isn't open yet, so we don't have folks playing the game at this moment,
10:16but I'm really looking forward to talking to folks after they've played it,
10:18because I think there's so many different ways to problem solve and find moons in these kingdoms.
10:24I'm not even sure if folks will find everything over the course of the show,
10:27but it's going to be interesting to find out how different people approached completing some of these objectives.
10:31But the game encourages so much experimentation, because you aren't kicked out of the level every time you find a
10:35moon.
10:36There is no reason not to investigate every little thing you can see that might be interesting.
10:40There's no time limit. There's no disincentive.
10:45There's lots and lots of cool stuff.
10:47Whoa! Okay.
10:49Yeah, it is a very interesting change that adds, I think, to the immersion in the kingdoms.
10:52When you think about Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine,
10:55whenever you got your, whatever the collectible objective was, depending on the game you were playing,
11:00you'd get bumped out of the area and you'd have to come back in.
11:03But here, since you're not going to get booted out of the kingdom when you collect a power moon,
11:07there's a lot of encouragement to just go check out that weird thing you saw on the horizon,
11:11because you can still continue with whatever your memory objective is.
11:13Oh, no!
11:15But then, you know, keep on tracking and finding moons.
11:18Another reason to explore everything is that there's very little punishment for dying.
11:22I just lost ten coins, and there's lots.
11:25So, and I get to try again right away.
11:28I got a mission and a join coin.
11:33It's also worth mentioning that the bullet bills here are coming out with visors on,
11:36so they cannot be captured until you knock their hats off,
11:38because an enemy with a hat is the scariest thing in this game.
11:42Fashion is very important in this game.
11:43You've got to be conscious of your headwear.
11:45Oh, careful.
11:46Oh, no!
11:48Well, apparently this is not my day for this challenge.
11:51That's right. Third time's a charm, right?
11:52Yeah.
11:55And if at first you don't succeed, give up on the third attempt.
12:01I'm just looking at the space where we saw other sections of New Dog City,
12:04and looking here, I'm just so impressed with the texture work that's been done,
12:09and I feel like every time I see a new build at this game,
12:11more and more of these textures are just jumping out at me.
12:14It's really fun to see in person.
12:17It is a gorgeous game, and we're going to have some other segments later on in the stream
12:22that are going to highlight some especially pretty areas.
12:25Oh, you got this.
12:27Yeah.
12:31And, oh!
12:33While I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed, yes!
12:35Thank you.
12:36One thing that we haven't mentioned yet that we probably should talk a little bit about
12:39is the fact that you're playing with Joy-Con with the wrist straps attached.
12:41Yes.
12:42And that's a really fantastic way to play this game.
12:44It, of course, supports Pro Controller and other controller options,
12:47but you can do so much with the motion controls,
12:49and throwing Cappy feels very intuitive.
12:52Yeah.
12:52I'm going to switch to a different section of the game
12:54where I show the sand world, which is also playable on the show floor.
12:59So give me just a moment here.
13:01Oh, no worries.
13:02But I do love that as you're experimenting,
13:04and I think we'll see folks doing that on the show floor here,
13:06so many of your gestures will affect how Cappy moves
13:09that while you're holding the Joy-Con with the wrist straps attached,
13:12you really want to just try moving your arms in different directions.
13:14Like, okay, I'm going to throw it up, I'm going to throw it down, throw it out.
13:18But I was really impressed by how well that implementation was put into play.
13:22Here we are.
13:23Yeah.
13:24Oh, this place is so pretty.
13:25So we are in the sand kingdom in the town of Tostarena,
13:31and they have a problem now because it's all frozen.
13:34Everything is cold for reasons, of course, that Mario will eventually solve.
13:39Yeah, actually, if you hang still for a second,
13:40we can show his little idle animation when he's cold.
13:42Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:42Really cute.
13:44Oh, he's cold.
13:46I love the locals here, too.
13:47Yeah, I think he's distracted by the local dancing around,
13:49but I think if he's by himself, then he really shivers.
13:51Oh, poor Mario.
13:54So let's see here.
13:56One thing I did want to show off is,
13:59so as we mentioned, there's two kinds of coins in this game.
14:01And I believe the first time in the Mainline Mario series,
14:04you can actually buy things with your coins.
14:06And I wanted to ask the developers how that came up,
14:09you know, that currency should be worth currency.
14:22So we wanted, you know, coins to be used as coins in this game.
14:25Actually, use them as money.
14:33And, you know, I think you'll agree, you know,
14:35if you go to a foreign land,
14:37one of the things that makes the biggest impression on you is the currency.
14:43You know, you kind of look at it and you think,
14:45wait, is this real?
14:46Can I use this?
14:54And since, you know, Mario was going around
14:55to all these different kingdoms in this game,
14:57we wanted to make sure that there was a currency for each one.
15:07And, you know, they're collectible items,
15:10so you can use them to buy different outfits or buy souvenirs.
15:14Speaking of...
15:17Yeah, and it's always fun to buy souvenirs, right?
15:19Yeah, absolutely.
15:22And speaking of shopping, we are now in Crazy Cap.
15:24So there's two kinds of coins.
15:26As we mentioned, the purple ones are unique to the local kingdom.
15:29The yellow ones can be used in any shop.
15:32I'm going to buy...
15:33Because the guy at the door said,
15:35maybe I should...
15:36I'm not living up to their dress code,
15:37maybe I should buy some clothes to fit in better.
15:40I'm going to buy a local sombrero and poncho.
15:44and wait till you see how adorable Mario looks.
15:48I'm thinking adorable.
15:49I just love the shopkeeper.
15:51Yeah, and their huge stack of hats.
15:53It's so cute.
15:54And you can see some of the souvenirs you can buy there
15:56that you can use to decorate the inside of the ship.
15:59Nice.
16:00And now I'm rocking this look.
16:05Let's go try that door again.
16:10So my capabilities are the same.
16:11You know, I still have...
16:12It's still cappy,
16:13even though he's turned into a different kind of hat now.
16:16He can turn into any kind of headwear, apparently.
16:20Exotic superpower.
16:22And, all right.
16:23So I go over and talk to this guy.
16:25See if you meet the expectations now.
16:30Ooh, snappy and lively.
16:31Snappy and lively.
16:32I think the hat is the one and the poncho is the other.
16:38All right.
16:41And this is, of course, the goal I was working toward all this time.
16:47I love all these little moments of surprise
16:48where you never really know what's going to happen
16:51when you get into these spaces.
16:52Why did I want to get in this room?
16:53I don't know.
16:53I wanted to get in this room so I could play guitar.
16:56You want to get in because it's locked.
16:57Yeah, exactly.
17:02So then we're going to move on
17:04to some more traditional 3D Mario gameplay
17:08over this direction.
17:09Now that you are terribly well-dressed,
17:10it's time to go do some exploring.
17:11Yeah.
17:13And that was just footprints.
17:14I must be on the right track.
17:20So notice that while using the motion controls,
17:22I can actually use the little homing function on the hat
17:25more easily.
17:26It is possible with the button controls only,
17:30but it's much more difficult.
17:34All right.
17:34The classic Goomba.
17:36Yeah.
17:37And let's just do a big one for that.
17:44And yeah.
17:46That's, I guess, something folks are probably noticing here.
17:48So you're not capturing those Goomba.
17:50It's not every single enemy that's capturable.
17:53That's true.
17:53You've got to find the special ones.
17:55Yeah.
17:55And a lot of it's having a good eye
17:57and just experimenting a lot with your cap.
17:59I think they're a shade bigger,
18:00the ones you can capture,
18:01but I'm not positive about that.
18:06So bullet bills, of course,
18:07are useful because you can fly with them.
18:17And now I've got to very quickly capture my ride back.
18:22And with bullet bills,
18:23you can only capture them for a limited amount of time
18:25because at some point they're just going to blow up.
18:26So you have to be a little mindful of what you're doing.
18:29Yeah.
18:30You only get so much time with the explosive guys.
18:33All right.
18:34And then almost to one of my favorite bits in this level.
18:41Oh, yeah.
18:42The next bit you're coming up to
18:43just blew my mind the first time I saw it.
18:45So this place has these murals
18:47that look like they're decorated
18:48in this cool old school aesthetic.
18:51And I'm just going to go right on in.
18:56And I've still got my costume.
18:59So Koizuma-san and Monokura-san,
19:00I think we definitely need to hear
19:01a little bit more background
19:02about why you added this into the game.
19:04Because it's so cool,
19:05but it's so unexpected as well, I think.
19:21So we wanted to make something
19:22that would be sort of a contrast
19:24with the 3D stages
19:25that you're able to explore very freely.
19:33You know, the 2D spaces
19:35are kind of more confined.
19:37They're more precise.
19:38You know, it's more like kind of
19:40sort of traditional platforming elements.
19:47And, but also within the 2D stages,
19:49as you can see,
19:50we wanted to have a lot of different variety.
19:59and of course, you know,
20:00with the visuals,
20:00we're hoping it's something,
20:01you know, the people who enjoyed
20:02kind of those classic nostalgic games
20:04also get a kick out of as well.
20:07So one thing I'd love to show off
20:08when we're getting out
20:09to the end of this space
20:11is just how much the music changes
20:14when we're transitioning back and forth.
20:16Because I know we've been chatting,
20:17maybe it's hard for some folks to hear
20:19what's been going on here,
20:19but if we just pop in and out of that warp pipe,
20:21it's a pretty impressive transition
20:23when the music changes.
20:26Oh, but there's no warp pipe up here.
20:28Just don't jump off.
20:29Yeah.
20:29But you can now see
20:30that it's more of a naturalistic instrument.
20:32So I'm going to skip ahead
20:34and show off the last part of this scenario.
20:39Okay.
20:40So for that,
20:42I will need these.
20:44Wrist straps, people.
20:45Always wrist straps.
20:46Yes.
20:50I'll just have to jump in.
20:51Okay.
20:54Yeah, it's worth mentioning, too,
20:55that we're only covering a tiny bit
20:57of what is in this kingdom.
20:58There's so much more to do and explore.
21:00There's just a ridiculous amount.
21:01All right.
21:02So here we are.
21:02This is much later in the level.
21:04I've still got my snappy outfit, though.
21:07Watch these bullet bills transition out of the 2D,
21:09and then I'm going to use one
21:10to break open this wall.
21:13So another thing that's really handy
21:14about the bullet bills
21:15is a capture target that you'll see here.
21:17When you're trying to target
21:19for really precision flying,
21:20it's got a little bit of a headlight.
21:21Oh, no.
21:22Oh, I'm doomed.
21:23That's okay.
21:24But it's got a little bit of a headlamp,
21:26so you can kind of use that to line yourself up.
21:28It's super handy.
21:31That's okay,
21:32because we get to see this cute little
21:332D to 3D transition again with the bills.
21:35It's so cool.
21:37All right.
21:40All right.
21:41You got this.
21:42Yeah.
21:44All right.
21:45Here we go.
21:48And with the bullet bills,
21:50you can also give yourself
21:50little speed bursts as well.
21:52Shaking the Joy-Con
21:53will let you go a little bit further.
21:55So it's worth experimenting
21:56once you get a feel for the timing
21:57of how long a bullet bill will last.
21:59It's kind of like driving a car
22:01that doesn't have any brake pedal.
22:03You can go faster.
22:04You can steer.
22:06But that's all you can do.
22:10And all right.
22:11So up here,
22:12we're going about to confront
22:13one of the Brutals.
22:14And folks may have seen them
22:15in our original teaser trailer
22:17for this game.
22:19They are an evil wedding planning firm.
22:22And I'd love to hear more
22:24from the developers
22:25about how they came to be
22:27and what your favorite Brutal is.
22:47So they've,
22:48you know, as
22:49you kind of said,
22:49they've been employed
22:50by Bowser. They're in charge of making
22:52sure his wedding goes off about a hitch.
22:57They're very serious
22:58about their work.
22:59I'm just like that.
23:00Their work ethic is admirable.
23:15And you know, my
23:17The kind of shorter one
23:19who has that green top hat on? Yeah,
23:23guy in green. Yeah. Yeah
Now
23:27what do Koizumiさん,
23:28do you have a favorite? Koizumi
23:47This is really good timing
23:48because the character
23:49I like the most
23:49is the one you're
23:50fighting right now,
23:51Harriet.
23:51She has this great
23:52contrast between
23:53her cute appearance
23:54and like how devilish she is.
23:56She's sort of like
23:56the tricky little sister
23:58of the group here.
24:02Her attacks are really
24:03fun to watch as well,
24:04especially when she
24:04starts flying around.
24:06And it's worth mentioning
24:07you fight each of the
24:08Brutals a few times,
24:10but their tactics
24:11get more and more
24:12intense and dangerous.
24:17But I'll be honest,
24:17having planned
24:18a wedding last year,
24:19I would take the help
24:20of evil wedding planner.
24:22Yeah, I mean,
24:23any evil help
24:24is better than no help.
24:25And they're very
24:26dedicated to their work.
24:27And they're willing
24:28to fight your enemies
24:28for you,
24:29and that's pretty great.
24:30Oh, nice.
24:32There we go.
24:34Nicely done.
24:35Thank you.
24:38Sorry, Harriet.
24:41She'll be back.
24:43All right.
24:44So that's a grand moon
24:45worth three power moons.
24:46And there we see Cappy
24:47in his natural stage
24:47as well.
24:48Yep, there he is,
24:48celebrating with Mario.
24:53Nice.
24:55Nice.
24:56All right.
24:57So that's what we have
24:58for gameplay for right now.
24:59But we did have one more
25:00little feature,
25:01I believe.
25:02Yes, we've got
25:03some new goodies
25:04that have turned up
25:05here on stage with us.
25:06So these are
25:07the amiibo for the game.
25:09We've got Princess Peach,
25:11Bowser, and Mario
25:12in their wedding outfits.
25:13and I just need
25:15to ask you guys
25:16about the development
25:17process for these
25:18because the detail
25:19of the sculpting
25:20is incredible.
25:20It must have been
25:21a very interesting
25:21process getting these
25:23to the state
25:24they're in here.
25:37So first of all,
25:38you know, we've got our
25:38heroine, Peach,
25:40and we wanted to make sure
25:40that she just looked
25:41that's absolutely stunning.
25:49And then from there,
25:50you know, we have Mario
25:51and Bowser as well
25:52and we had to make sure
25:53that, you know,
25:53in terms of visuals,
25:54they weren't going
25:54to lose out.
25:55They've got to keep up.
25:58so we can figure out
26:03that it's really
26:04the pose.
26:04And another characteristic
26:06of these is that the
26:07posing is very kind of
26:08directly linked with the
26:10story and, you know,
26:11what's going to be
26:11in the game.
26:13Mario's got kind of a humble bow thing going
26:17and Bowser's kind of looking like,
26:19I own the world!
26:21I think Bowser looks pretty dapper here though.
26:23But it is really amazing the,
26:25I don't know how close we can get the camera here,
26:27we've got a better look here,
26:28but in person the texture where some of them have
26:31almost like a pearlized kind of texture
26:33and there's a lot of subtlety with the different kinds of fabric,
26:36you can really see a lot of nuance
26:39for these Amiibo.
26:41I'm really looking forward to people seeing them in person.
26:43Yeah, they're gorgeous.
26:44And I wonder, at this point is there anything you'd like to share
26:46about the functionality of Amiibo for our viewers?
27:07So you'll be able to use the Amiibo to get different costumes within the game,
27:11and then they'll also have kind of an assist function.
27:14And we do have existing Amiibo that are supported as well,
27:17I think we'll be talking more about that at a later point.
27:20But I think that's all we're allowed to show for right now, unfortunately.
27:24We'll be seeing more of this game later on in the stream, of course.
27:27Yes, we'll definitely do that.
27:27But Murkura-san and Koizumi-san,
27:28thank you again so much for joining us here
27:30and sharing some of the insight about the development process of the game.
27:33Thank you very much.
27:37And folks who are watching, thank you so much for joining us.
27:39We're going to be back in a few seconds here with our next segment,
27:42so please don't go anywhere.
