00:05NINTENDO MINUTE
00:30Yes, I've really been looking forward to this.
00:31Great! And then of course we have Scott, our amazing translator.
00:34Thank you, thank you.
00:34And just generally a great person.
00:38So today we're talking Super Mario Odyssey.
00:40In case you didn't figure that out.
00:41We've all decked out here.
00:43Yeah!
00:43And we've got the game with us.
00:45We have two areas that we're going to show today.
00:48But I'm going to play first here.
00:50And the first thing is just, you know, looking around this amazing environment.
00:54And one thing that's really cool about this game is that you can use Mario's cap.
01:00And his name is Cappy.
01:01Cappy?
01:01Yes.
01:02And you can actually control Cappy in some pretty cool ways.
01:05You can flip a broken and stick your wrist to the right or left to make Cappy go some different
01:11directions.
01:12You can even have him do a crazy spin.
01:15So lots of different ways to use Cappy.
01:18And kind of an integral part of this game is using Cappy and kind of exploring and seeing what you
01:23can do with it.
01:24Now Cappy, sometimes in some of the speaking scenes, he appears as the white hat.
01:28But then he's also part of Mario's hat.
01:31What is the difference between the two?
01:33Yeah.
01:34So Cappy's true form is this white top hat sort of appearance.
01:38But he's the sort of guy who wants to know more about lots of different kinds of hats.
01:42And that's one of the reasons he's enjoying traveling with Mario so much.
01:46And Mario, it just so happens, for reasons you can't explain yet, has lost his hat.
01:50So this was a nice coincidence.
01:52So what I've learned so far, this town is frozen, Mario is cold.
01:57What's happening?
01:58It's very cold.
02:00So this is normally a really hot place, as you would imagine.
02:03But for a certain reason, everything is frozen right now.
02:06In fact, at this point, you don't even know yet if this was Bowser's doing or not.
02:10I do like the visual touches because you're obviously in a desert, not a place that's cold often.
02:15Right.
02:15There's enough flourishes, like you can see sort of, you know, the cold air coming off of these big structures
02:20of ice and his shivering.
02:22It really does feel cold.
02:23It does feel cold.
02:24And then when you look through the ice, like, I like the way it, like, reflects through.
02:27Yeah, it's really cool.
02:28So you can go really in any direction.
02:31Do you find that people go a certain way once they get into this desert initially?
02:36Yeah, people are certainly free to explore, but we also show them an objective right at the beginning when they
02:41enter the level.
02:41So if they want to head for that, they certainly won't get lost.
02:43Yeah, so this actually allows you to see the objective, which is right here.
02:48Yeah, you see that pillar of light over on top of the tower.
02:51But you can go anywhere you like.
02:55This is cool.
02:56So it's nice to maybe, like, see what's around you.
02:59You can form a plan of what you would like to explore.
03:06I love that move.
03:08That's a handy one.
03:09Surrounded.
03:10Nope.
03:12That's nice too.
03:13I learned that from you, actually.
03:15The greatest compliment ever.
03:17Greatest compliment ever.
03:17Greatest?
03:18Really?
03:18Wow.
03:19I'm feeling good right now.
03:20Do you?
03:20Yeah.
03:21Okay, so this is my favorite part, too.
03:22Because Cappy, obviously, can take over different classic Mario enemies that go here.
03:34That was close.
03:35And of course they get the mustache as well, which is really good.
03:39You've got to get that.
03:40You've got to have the mustache.
03:41Yes.
03:43Yes.
03:46Yes.
03:47Yeah, we really enjoyed putting mustaches on lots of things.
03:50Who doesn't?
03:51Do many on the development team grow mustaches to get into the spirit of creating a Mario game?
03:56You have a mustache.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Now, there's something that you're collecting as you're kind of exploring the levels, which are these green moons.
04:04Yes.
04:05Can we talk a little bit about sort of that?
04:08That's the item that you'll be collecting this game called power moons.
04:11And something that I like about those is there's so many all around you, but when you get one, you
04:16aren't taken out.
04:17You can just sort of keep going from where you left off.
04:21That's right.
04:21We moved away from the previous convention of taking the player out of the stage when they pick up a
04:26star or a moon, for example.
04:27This allows you to play continuously without interruption.
04:30Yeah.
04:31I saw that block was like sparkling a little bit, and I was like, I wonder what's in there.
04:34Must be something about that one.
04:38That's a bit of a hint on that spark.
04:40Yeah.
04:41Oh, and when I get the moon, it also restores all my heart as well.
04:44Yeah.
04:44And also, I also like how it logs when you got it.
04:47So you can kind of make sort of a mental journal of how you went through the game.
04:53Yeah, because our theme is the journey this time around, we really wanted to give people sort of like a
04:58traveling journal feel when they see the...
05:00the date attached to that power moon you picked up.
05:03Oh, it's a good one.
05:05Oh.
05:07I'm impressed.
05:09These reactions are very, like, comforting to me.
05:11They're so nice.
05:12I really like this.
05:13It's helping me a lot.
05:18So this is really cool.
05:20This is like parts of the game where it becomes your like traditional 8-bit Mario.
05:26what kind of inspired this type of element in the game?
05:31It's a really good opportunity for us in this big 3D sandbox space to give people a little bit different
05:36gameplay feel
05:37and maybe even give them a little bit of a challenge that kind of breaks up the feeling of exploration
05:41that they have in the 3D world.
05:44Oh.
05:46Come on, moon.
05:48I thought you were just going to get it.
05:49I was really like, oh, I got this.
05:51So Super Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time.
05:54And one of the reasons why is even after you got all the stars, it was fun to just go
05:58back into the levels and kind of make your own, you know, challenges for yourself and see how you might
06:02navigate it in different ways.
06:03And I really get that feel from this game as well.
06:07So I'm curious if they, you know, beyond the power moons themselves, did they create these worlds to just have
06:12so much for people to experiment with?
06:16There's definitely this running theme of freedom that you'll find in any of the sandbox space Mario games.
06:22So certainly in Super Mario 64 it would reward exploration, but also give you a reason to go back and
06:26just take a look around from a different angle.
06:28And that's something we definitely tried to create here as well.
06:34That would seem to be a bad move, but here we are.
06:37I thought it was bad.
06:39I didn't know before.
06:42So in some of the kingdoms we've seen so far, there seems to be more of a balance of, you
06:45know, classic Mario enemies, but maybe a setting that feels a bit more familiar to the real world.
06:51Like, how did you balance something so that it still feels Mario and obviously would be very different for Mario,
06:57but is familiar to the player?
07:01Yeah, because Mario is setting out from the Mushroom Kingdom on this adventure, on this journey, every world that he
07:06encounters, every kingdom he goes to is going to feel like a completely different place to him.
07:10But yeah, you're right. Some of those do look like the place that we've been before.
07:14You just have to pause to groan at that.
07:17Sorry, you had a very smart answer.
07:20We were in the middle of a deep thought right there.
07:21That I wasn't listening to him.
07:24Continue.
07:25But you'll see that whenever he encounters some places that, even though they're familiar to us, he is interacting with
07:32them in new ways that we would not certainly.
07:38Okay, hold on, hold on, hold on, just wait.
07:40Okay, patience.
07:41Patience.
07:42I'm going to get these coins.
07:43Okay, go, go, go.
07:44Okay, go, go.
07:44Okay, go down here.
07:46Yeah.
07:47That only took like ten minutes, you know.
07:48You know, we got time, it's okay.
07:51So, this creature, the Jaguar and Tassi, the Jaguar.
07:55Oh my gosh.
07:56It's going crazy.
07:58This Jaguar and Tassi, is a creature, let's say, that only lives in this world, but certainly is a lot
08:03of fun and to be able to drive.
08:05So as soon as you jump on, he like, takes off and is going insane.
08:10and then you can like kind of run run through things
08:14weee!
08:15weee!
08:15ok
08:18oh my goodness
08:20so fun
08:21oh my gosh ok so we have one other area to show
08:24we're going to take a little trip to New Donk City
08:26Kit is dying to play New Donk City
08:29so we'll get that set up and we'll be right back
08:31so out of the desert into the city
08:33into the city
08:34yeah completely different environment which is very cool
08:38I think you can see that the purple coins are now a little bit different as well
08:43from when you saw them in the desert area
08:45yeah these are specific to this kingdom here
08:47let's talk to some of the citizens here
08:50so what do you think a common question is you know we have you know more human looking characters here
08:55Mario obviously looks like Mario what is the difference?
08:59perhaps the best way to say it is that the human characters you're encountering here
09:02and Mario also live on an earth together
09:06mmm
09:07I like that
09:09it's like a meta answer
09:10yeah
09:12now this is something that really gets people going
09:15you can count how many times you can jump the rope
09:17I won't do it here
09:18but I'm curious what is the highest from the dev team on the jumping rope
09:22oh yeah
09:23I don't know if I can tell you the exact answer the number of times that their record is
09:26but I can tell you their people are a lot better at it than I am
09:29I'm not very good at a jumping rope either actually
09:32and here we have a returning face Pauline who is the mayor of the city
09:37what how did you want her to play this role in New Donk City?
09:41so based on the environment we knew we were going to be creating something
09:44that was referencing a previous game in Donkey Kong
09:47and we have the city name New Donk City
09:49and we knew the the best person to represent that city was pulling another character from that game Pauline
09:56so I think it's really interesting that this world that you know Mario is exploring is so different than previous
10:03Mario games
10:04and Mr. Koizumi has worked on so many Mario games
10:09what is I'm curious to hear you know what your thoughts are on sort of how the series has evolved
10:14and you know where are we now with this particular Mario game
10:18so probably one of the biggest changes that's happened over time in the Mario series is going from those old
10:262D side-scrollers
10:27to exploring a 3D space and having all of those little discoveries with you
10:32and even within those 3D Mario games you'll see a couple of different styles
10:35where some of them ask you to go down a certain room and try to reach a goal or an
10:39end point
10:40others give you a lot of freedom and let you explore
10:43making that the core focus of the game play itself
10:45and you see here we're returning to that idea which you last would have seen in Super Mario Sunshine
10:51this city is such an interesting environment
10:54because there's so many like little nooks and crannies to kind of explore
10:58and there's always something kind of behind every corner
11:00oh how do you get in there?
11:04how did you know that?
11:05did you feel anything?
11:07yeah I did feel the vibration
11:08HD shino
11:10yes that's the HD rumble
11:11that is
11:14so tell everyone you know
11:18you heard it here first guys
11:20I like how much you can get from rooftop to rooftop
11:23and it kind of becomes a game in itself
11:25how high can I get?
11:26how can I not go down to the ground level?
11:30yeah I think that's a really key way to enjoy the game
11:34Mario has so many different actions that he can perform
11:37you can find lots of different ways
11:39different routes
11:39different means of getting to the certain parts of the level
11:42and that's a lot of the joy of this portion
11:46and I'm sure there will be people who even beat the game
11:50without even finding some of these harder to pull off actions
11:54yeah
11:54are you going to get your formal outfit on?
11:57I really want to
11:58I should find that
11:59yeah
11:59yeah
12:00he needs a sharp suit in the city
12:03so we can pull up the map here
12:04and this is nice
12:06you can just jump from checkpoint to checkpoint
12:09so there it is
12:10where am I right now?
12:12so I'm facing that way
12:17this is how I go down the street too
12:19you're sparking down the street
12:21oh
12:23crazy
12:24crazy cap store
12:26where you can actually buy different caps and outfits
12:30and there are general coins that you can get
12:32and then there are coins that are specific to each of the areas that you're in
12:36hmm
12:37let's see
12:44I mean, can I get that hat?
12:46I want that
12:47I want that
12:47I want that
12:47I want that
12:48I can
12:50I do have enough
12:52yes
12:54please
12:55that's a bargain
12:56I have to say
12:58this is casual
12:59it's like an E3 wear
13:02look at that, wow
13:05Cappy's still involved of course
13:06Cappy's still
13:07you can tell by the little eyes
13:08you know
13:09Cappy has some expressive
13:11expressive eyes
13:12oh
13:13get riding off to work
13:14in this business casual
13:15oh gosh
13:16gotta be careful
13:17you can jump
13:18in the scooter too
13:20off of the car perhaps
13:21whoa
13:22that's how I get to work every day
13:23oh yes
13:24here we can
13:24see if we can go up this
13:26oh gosh
13:27oh no
13:27here we can
13:28oh
13:29stunt Mario bike
13:31I'm sure you're feeling some shaking
13:32as you're riding the things here
13:33I am
13:33that is the HD rumble
13:35HD rumble
13:36that's HD rumble
13:40yes
13:41what's underneath those tarps?
13:43I'm focused on this right now
13:44I can't answer your questions
13:47oh you can park here
13:48I found the one parking lot
13:49up on the top of this building
13:50but you have to go up the stairs
13:52I'm the very first
13:52me
13:53you see
13:57he's like very relaxed on the scooter
13:59of course he is
14:00he's Mario
14:02no
14:02and this is where we get off
14:06oh my gosh that's too funny
14:08uh
14:08little bit further here
14:09let's just see what's up here
14:10I like to climb the city
14:11you do
14:11I really like that
14:12oh nice
14:14oh oh no
14:14my wall jump
14:15no
14:15here's the dream guys
14:18reach for your goals Mario
14:23and uh I really like these
14:25because you can kind of flick yourself
14:27forward
14:28oh no
14:29wait wait
14:29it's okay
14:30it's not okay
14:31oh
14:32oh no
14:32halfway safe
14:33can't you port back to that
14:35flag
14:36that's a great point
14:37I tried to show off
14:38and it backfired
14:39it really did
14:40this is where you have to be more humble
14:41I don't like that
14:45notice I did not flick myself
14:47this time
14:48right
14:48yes this is
14:49this is exactly
14:52this is incredible right
14:53yes
14:53went all the way
14:55to the top
14:58as it turns out
14:59a lot of the shape of the building
15:00architectural style
15:01it all comes off of
15:03the way we were feeling
15:03about the character of Pauline
15:05she drove a lot of that
15:07who knew that Pauline is such a classy lady
15:09you didn't know when she was
15:10getting pelted by Donkey Kong
15:12barrels flying all over the place
15:15and you can see that's where I started
15:17over there
15:18and where I've been
15:20and I really like that pool
15:21oh
15:22rooftop pool
15:22I think that might be
15:23a nice way to wrap up
15:25at the end of our
15:27trailer for Super Mario Odyssey at E3
15:30we had a really awesome song
15:32that kind of played along with
15:34the new footage returned from James
15:36and it's actually you know a song that's voiced
15:41and in the song they refer to a one-up girl
15:45what is a one-up girl?
15:46what does that mean?
15:47and how do I become one?
15:49that's my question for you
15:52that's my question for you
15:53so we also have lyrics that are in Japanese for this song as well
15:58they're a little bit different from the English
16:00in that they take a slightly different tact
16:02they're like it's more like how could I become your one-up girl
16:05so either way
16:07either way we're interested
16:08I don't know
16:09I don't know
16:11very interested
16:14so the whole idea of the song is to really give people like a great energy and vibe
16:18and get them pumped up to play the game
16:20and so if you're the kind of person that can give people that sort of energy
16:23and get them hyped up
16:24then maybe you have already become
16:27WHOA!
16:27this is the biggest one of you
16:30arigatouzaimasu
16:32well this is so amazing to have you here and tell us about the game and getting a chance to
