00:01What we're seeing here already, Morgan, is a little bit of an 8-bit section.
00:05How's that gonna affect how Mario might potentially be able to move?
00:08Yeah, so this is kinda like the Nintendo Championship in a nutshell.
00:10This game is gonna bring all of their Mario skills to bear.
00:14Thomas G right now with the early lead.
00:16John Numbers trying to figure out what you need to do here.
00:19You see that light, but no!
00:21John Numbers falling through the light.
00:23How do you figure out that puzzle right there?
00:25Meanwhile, Thomas G, he's in the lead right now,
00:27realizing that, okay, something happens when I hit those P blocks.
00:30Let me go ahead and hop in that tube and see what I can do here.
00:33Both players trying to get a feel for the mechanics at this point.
00:36John Numbers going back, trying to reset the situation on your left-hand side.
00:40Still plenty of time left in this one as he has time to make up ground against Thomas G.
00:44And you look at trying to figure out the problem-solving, transitioning, Eric,
00:48from 3D to 2D, not having all of Mario's moves at your disposal when you go to 2D mode.
00:53Yeah, absolutely.
00:53Generally, 3D Mario games are about exploration, first and foremost.
00:57So you're going to go somewhere, realize you need to actually do something else,
01:00and kind of backtrack.
01:01Whereas you never backtrack, really, in a 2D Mario game.
01:04John Numbers is basically neck and neck with Thomas G at this point.
01:08It seems like John Numbers might have solved this puzzle, essentially.
01:12Thomas G, meanwhile, trying to hit that blue platform at the right time.
01:16John Numbers, no!
01:17Can't quite make that jump on your left-hand side.
01:19Thomas G, though, going to be welcomed with an easy jump and 8 coins as well, too.
01:24And Thomas G takes the early lead over our defending champion, John Numbers.
01:29Got some classic platforming action right here.
01:31John Numbers trying to figure out those red and blue platforms on your left.
01:35And here comes Thomas G, now, trying to line up 3 platforms here.
01:38And, Morgan, it's all about patience.
01:39Yeah, I think these guys, at this point, they both get what's going on in this level,
01:43and now they just have to execute it under the pressure.
01:45Oh, Thomas G lines it up perfectly, has a stairway to hopefully a potential victory
01:53as you climb the red, blue, and green platforms.
01:56Meanwhile, John Numbers still trying to figure out the second section.
02:00And Thomas G gonna go ahead and grab the moon and wins the first challenge,
02:05which means that's good for a five-second head start in our third and final challenge.
02:09And what we saw here was the quick problem-solving by Thomas G here, Eric,
02:14of recognizing the situation and seeing what the objective was.
02:16Yeah, that was really kind of the first big sort of puzzle challenge
02:20that these competitors have faced in the entire competition.
02:24Five-second head start good for Thomas G.
02:26That'll apply to the third and final challenge.
02:28However, if John Numbers wins the second challenge,
02:30that will negate that head start, meaning they will both be starting even with each other
02:34on that third and final challenge.
02:36And you look at the different moves, and Morgan, how difficult is it when you're 3D Mario
02:39and you've got all those moves?
02:40And like I asked Smitty, you go to 2D mode, and now all of your movements have changed drastically.
02:45Yeah, I think after that first level, maybe they're both feeling like,
02:47okay, I'm starting to wrap my head around this game and what I'm going to have to bring to bear.
02:50Because I mean, a five-second head start, even a 10, that might matter a lot.
02:53That might not at all.
02:54So in one hand, I might just be using the second round to make sure I master these controls,
02:57because all that really matters is that final game.
02:59It's such a good point.
03:00With the controls, they always add more abilities for Mario and what he can do
03:03in figuring out what area calls for a specific move from Mario.
03:07But how about Thomas G rising up and getting the victory in the first challenge
03:10against John Numbers, our defending champion?
03:12Yeah, you know, I was surprised how easily he moved through that level.
03:16It was really impressive to watch.
03:17As we get set for the second challenge, the players are getting everything queued up at this point.
03:21And you look at a five-second head start, and some people may be like,
03:25well, Morgan, that's not the greatest head start.
03:27But when you have players that are this good, and they are so equal to one another,
03:32a five-second head start could be the difference between winning and losing.
03:35It's true. That's true.
03:36But sometimes coming from behind makes you run a little harder, press a little harder,
03:39and you can't sit on that advantage.
03:42Challenge number two, simple.
03:44First player to touch the moon at the end of the level is going to go ahead
03:47and add five more seconds to their head start.
03:49As we said, players are getting queued up and ready to go.
03:52And it sounds like we are set to go.
03:54So, Andrea, let's go ahead and kick things off.
03:56All right. Thanks, Jordan.
03:59I've been waiting to say this all show.
04:01Who is going to capture this round?
04:05Oh, come on. It was a good dad joke.
04:08Yeah. Thank you. Thank you.
04:11All right, players. Here we go.
04:14Three, two, one, go.
04:18That first challenge, we saw them hit some P-blocks, and now we have early use of the capture mechanic
04:22as John numbers flicking himself upwards with the fork and trying to figure out how things happen in this level.
04:28And then you see those blue arrows that's going to go ahead and move Cappy if you use Cappy against
04:33those arrows.
04:33And John numbers already quickly figuring out this level on your left-hand side.
04:37But, oh, yes. Very nice.
04:39That's critical, Morgan, realizing you've got to do the double capture in midair.
04:42Yeah, I think we talked about Cappy, Mara's new sidekick, and I think this really shows what he's going to
04:46do in this game.
04:47And John numbers using the wall jump and sliding on top of the blue flag.
04:51And John numbers. How about that, folks?
04:53Just like that. How you like me now?
04:56Getting that moon and negating the five-second head start in the final challenge,
05:00which means both Thomas G and John numbers will start at the same time as we get set for our
05:07third and final challenge,
05:09which will determine the 2017 Nintendo World Champion.
05:24Fitting, Smitty, that it would come down to an equal start.
05:28Our final challenge, our final game between our final two competitors,
05:33John numbers, our defending champion in 2015, and Thomas G, who's trying to dethrone him.
05:38And what can you imagine is going through their minds as they get set for quite possibly one of the
05:43biggest moments in their gaming lives?
05:45I don't know. I mean, I feel like John numbers after that first loss, he kind of just like it
05:50lit the fire underneath him.
05:52And now he is just ready to crush. So we'll see what happens.
05:56And this third challenge here, Morgan, you look at how equally skilled both these players are.
06:00You have to imagine that it's going to test all of Mario's abilities as we get set to try and
06:04determine a champion here this year.
06:06Yeah, I mean, think of all the games these two have played to get here. None of that matters anymore.
06:11Well, except for the warm up they got in their thumbs, but it comes down to this.
06:13They're going to start this level at the same time. Whoever wins it wins the trophy.
06:16This is about as exciting as it gets. I am fired up.
06:18And what's been great as well, too, is the atmosphere here.
06:22These fans have just been exploding every single time a game is announced.
06:25I know they're amped and ready to go. We're just around the corner from our championship challenge.
06:35And we continue to prepare the players as they get set.
06:38Lots of excitement. You want to obviously make sure everything's dialed in and queued up and ready to go as
06:43we prepare for this final challenge.
06:45They've gone through the gauntlet of games. They've stayed in the entire stages.
06:50They haven't dropped down to the underground. Super Mario Odyssey, our final challenge.
06:53The first player to complete the level and defeat the boss, wins the 2017 Nintendo World Championships.
07:04To get things started, here's Andrea.
07:07Oh my gosh, you guys! It's almost happening!
07:12I'm so nervous right now. I'm nervous for these guys.
07:16The final countdown about to begin.
07:19In three, two, one, go!
07:24As we mentioned, no head start for either player.
07:26John Numbers on your left, Thomas G on your right.
07:28Oh, that's a clue right there.
07:30What will that laser beam do?
07:31Thomas G has the path cleared in front of him right now.
07:34But that ice can be a little slippery.
07:36You see a Goomba that Thomas G avoids.
07:38Meanwhile, John Numbers trying to navigate everything.
07:41Oh, Thomas G captures a Goomba.
07:43And you notice something.
07:45Hey, these feet don't slip on the ice, Eric.
07:47Something important to keep in mind.
07:49Yeah, that is a little hint that he gives you and may come in handy.
07:53And this is the first 3D space they've had to really navigate here, Morgan,
07:57and try to figure out exactly what you need to do as John Numbers takes a hit
08:00and drops down to two units of health at this point.
08:03Yeah, I think that both of you guys, we can see them kind of working it out.
08:06And I'm really impressed to see, as we said in the opening,
08:09there's not just a level, there's a boss waiting.
08:11We had that in the cards.
08:12So, is that in their head yet, or are they just focused on the steps in front of them?
08:15Thomas G on the right-hand side has the early lead right now.
08:19John Numbers trying to catch him.
08:20Oh!
08:21John Numbers flirting with the edge at this point.
08:24Thomas G hopping on the flower, advancing his way right now.
08:28And what do we have coming here?
08:29A bullet bill fast approaching.
08:31Thomas G, though, not able to get that bullet bill to come close.
08:36But John Numbers captures the bullet bill.
08:39And Numbers accelerates to the lead at this point.
08:42And what you're noticing here, Smitty, it's a homing bullet bill.
08:46John Numbers trying to make his way.
08:48You see him in the lead right now.
08:49Thomas G captures the bullet bill.
08:51He's going to go ahead and advance and try and catch up.
08:53John Numbers with a 1-2 hit on the other bullet bill.
08:56Has to navigate some moving pillars.
08:58Try not to crash that bullet bill.
09:00Oh!
09:01John Numbers!
09:02No!
09:03John Numbers hits the pillar and must restart.
09:06How far back will he be sent?
09:08Thomas G, meanwhile, just trying to avoid these pillars, trying to get to the final platform here.
09:13And, yes, Thomas G is going to go ahead and enter the cavern.
09:16John Numbers, meanwhile, he's sent back packing, having to redo this bill stage.
09:21Costly mistake here, Eric.
09:22Yeah, you know, he figured it out, so it shouldn't take him too long to catch up.
09:25But, meanwhile, Thomas G is...
09:27I love that long jump from Mario.
09:29I mean, you cover so much space in so little time.
09:32Oh, Thomas G notices there's a bullet bill right there.
09:34Have to try and capture that.
09:35That's going to buy some precious time for John Numbers.
09:38Oh!
09:39Just in the nick of time, Thomas G, before that bullet bill started flashing.
09:43Able to catch it?
09:44Before you know it, John Numbers already in the same arena as Thomas G.
09:48And here comes the boss.
09:51The only thing standing between Thomas G and this 2017 championship is this boss.
09:59Thomas G's going to have to figure out how to make his way against this boss right now.
10:03Oh, Mario taking a hit at that point.
10:05Going to go ahead and get stunned.
10:07John Numbers, though, falling to his doom.
10:09And Thomas G taking control of that one arm, trying to get contact of the boss.
10:14And, yes, that's one hit for Thomas G.
10:18Got to be patient when you take on this boss, getting that critical heart to the right-hand side.
10:22John Numbers, meanwhile, trying to figure out how to even get to the boss part right now.
10:26Thomas G on your right-hand side.
10:28Has to get some more hits to claim the championship at this point.
10:31Oh, we see some icicles falling, bringing back memories of Donkey Kong Country Returns.
10:36And, Smitty, you got to watch out for both these hands and the damage that they can do.
10:40And then, once they, you know, fall on the ground, you actually have to capture them.
10:46Oh, Thomas G unable to get to the boss's face by controlling that arm in time.
10:53Misses a chance to get attacked.
10:54John Numbers trying to have a comeback here.
10:57Numbers misses with that capture.
10:59Thomas G weaving his way.
11:01Makes contact with the boss.
11:02Thomas G getting closer and closer.
11:05Meanwhile, John Numbers trying to figure things out at this point, too.
11:08Trying to come from behind and defend this title.
11:10Sees that that hand is stunned.
11:12But keep an eye on Thomas G on your right-hand side.
11:15Could be moments away from crowning a champion here, folks.
11:18Thomas G trying to avoid the damage at this point.
