00:00All right Troops, it's your man Chris Scullin here from Tyrohack and I'm going to show you my Super Mario
00:04Odyssey gameplay.
00:05I was at Nintendo's UK headquarters last week and managed to play this for about 30 or 40 minutes,
00:10but I'm only allowed to show 10 minutes at most of overall footage, so here's the kind of best of
00:15bit, of the kind of best bits that I took.
00:19So this is the Metro City, Metro Kingdom, sorry, one of the sections of which is New Donk City, which
00:25you'll have seen in the original trailer.
00:26One of the best bits is hitting people on the arse with your hat, like so and like so, that's
00:31a lovely little trick that you can do.
00:34Now the mayor here is Mayor Pauline, we're about to meet her in a second, that's the lady who was
00:40originally in Donkey Kong, so that's a lovely wee trick.
00:43There's a cool wee move here if you flick, yeah you can do that, if you flick both the Joy
00:46-Cons to the side you can do a little kind of spin attack.
00:49People get a bit concerned when you talk about motion controls, but it actually works really well in this, so
00:53don't be too annoyed.
00:54You can obviously play with the pro controller if you'd rather, there's more arse slapping with the hat.
01:00It's a simple pleasure in life, but it's an important thing.
01:04Skelp, skelp, hours of fun.
01:07You can also kind of possess this telescope thing, so you can kind of see in advance where you're going
01:14to go and what you're going to do.
01:15So it's very lovely stuff.
01:18I'm also a big fan of running about and jumping on taxis, that's always bonus, and you've got your kind
01:23of classic Mario moves like the long jump and you can do the triple jump and stuff like that.
01:28There's also a roll move which I'll show you in more detail later on.
01:31Now here's Pauline, like I say she used to be in Donkey Kong, she was the kind of damsel in
01:35distress back in the day, but she's obviously done well for herself.
01:38She's now the mayor of New Donk City, and one of the missions here she's wanting Mario to round up
01:45four musicians to join the band, and each time you find one they give you like a moon, which are
01:52needed to power up your ship so you can fly about.
01:54And I love this wee moped thing that you can drive about on, it's pretty unnecessary, you don't really need
02:00it, but it makes really cool use of the HD rumble on the Joy-Cons that you really feel like,
02:07especially when you turn, or when you start like there from a stop, from a static position when you accelerate,
02:14you really feel it, it's pretty cool.
02:16Now here's the Crazy Cap hat shop, it's not really a hat shop, it's an outfit shop where you can
02:21buy costumes, and the greatest costume of all time is here.
02:24It's like a suit, it basically turns Mario into a mafia gangster, given his Italian heritage, it's only a matter
02:30of time before Mario became the mafioso, so here we go, Super Mafia Brothers.
02:37And it's lovely, and I mean, as soon as he, wearing it doesn't necessarily stop you from doing anything else
02:44that you can do as normal Mario, and that includes, of course, smacking people in the arse with your hat.
02:51So, even though he now looks like a dapper chap, um, scalp. So, there you go, that's the important thing.
03:00Now, you can run about like a tearaway and kick fuck out of bins, but you can also use these
03:05electric currents to kind of make your way up big buildings.
03:09This one has like a hidden, not hidden, but an entrance here where you can kind of scale the tower
03:14from the inside, and this bit is more like kind of standard classic Mario platforming, which is good.
03:21So, if you're concerned that it's mostly open world stuff and no kind of old school Mario platforming, there are
03:27elements like that, so don't worry.
03:28There's a lot of these posters dotted about with Peach and Bowser getting married, and you can fuck them all
03:33up.
03:34I don't know what the point is to them yet, I don't know if there's a reason for you, maybe
03:38that one of the missions is taking down all the posters.
03:40That's just purely speculation on my part.
03:44It's not yet clear what the point is of taking those posters down, I just know that you can.
03:49These mosquito things took me by surprise originally, but there you go.
03:53So, eventually, once you get out of this building, you can get up to the very top.
03:59And it's just another wee climbing session to get up there.
04:03You can use the corner of these buildings to kind of slowly get up.
04:07And while you're climbing, it gets to the bit here where you're climbing as if it was a...
04:14here.
04:15When you're climbing there, you can shake the Joy-Con and climb quicker, like so.
04:20And that gets you to the top.
04:21And there we go, a wee moon, another wee moon right at the top.
04:25And this bit from here gives you an example of the scale of the level.
04:29It's pretty cool, it's a nice...
04:31It's not an enormous open world, but it's big enough to make things interesting.
04:35And that swimming pool over there, you bet your fucking balls you can reach it from there with a jump.
04:40I bottled it trying to do it there, but I can do it from down here a bit.
04:44Get a wee cheeky long jump going.
04:47Go for it, son.
04:52Wahoo, I believe is the phrase.
04:54And there we go.
04:55So that's the Metro Kingdom.
04:57There's also the Sand Kingdom, which takes place here in Tostarina Town.
05:04It's a kind of Mexican theme, but it's been plagued by ice.
05:09Now there's another crazy capstone here and there's two guys here.
05:11There's one guy here who sells you the kind of Mexican stuff, as you'd imagine.
05:15But more importantly, there's a second guy who sells you, you guessed it, fucking gangster suit.
05:21So once again, Gangster Mario in the desert wrecking the joint, causing all manner of misdemeanours.
05:31Which is just the way to go, really.
05:33So yeah, hopefully, I mean, it seems almost certain that this means you can go around any of the final
05:38game's kind of areas with full regalia.
05:42So that's quite good.
05:43Another nice wee touch I like here is when you do a roll in the sand for long enough, your
05:47outfit gets dirty.
05:48It gets all sandy and dusty, so you'll see here.
05:51See, his hat's all kind of dusty.
05:52That doesn't last for a while, it kind of only lasts a few seconds and it goes back to its
05:56normal hue, so don't worry about that.
05:59Oh, good.
05:59See, he's pretty much back there.
06:01There's also a kind of quick travel thing, so at any point you can press the minus button, I believe,
06:09and that brings up this.
06:10It's like a travel brochure, so obviously the whole kind of theme here is that you're traveling about.
06:14It's a travel as a theme, but yeah, you can bring up a brochure whenever you want and teleport to
06:20any of the checkpoint flags you've already triggered, which is a nice wee touch.
06:26Let's see what's going on here.
06:27This is using this kind of fancy attack again, and this is possessing enemies, so you can possess this bullet
06:32bill to fly about like anybody's business.
06:39And the re-flower lets him do that lovely spin jump that you sometimes get in Mario games, which is
06:43awesome.
06:44This is a cool bit you might have seen before in trailers and stuff, where you can go into a
06:48kind of 2D Mario situation.
06:51A very nice touch, if I do say so myself.
06:55It works as normal as normal Mario games do.
06:58The physics feel pretty spot on.
07:01There's a sprint button in these sections where you can run faster, so it's all standard.
07:06The whole point is to get up to the top.
07:07Now you can do it like that, or, I've found out, you can kind of do a wee bit of
07:13a trick by diving on your hat and then jumping off it and skipping that whole bit entirely.
07:17So speedrunners, take note.
07:19That's a trick, that's a kind of skill you're going to have to learn if you're going to want to
07:25shave in seconds.
07:26Just in case you're curious, yes, when you're wearing a different outfit, and you go through one of those things
07:35that he keeps the outfit when he goes to a D.
07:38That's a very nice touch.
07:39Lovely stuff.
07:40So yeah, I really enjoy it.
07:43Some of the elements, like the electricity element, like that still stays from level to level, so although that was
07:49mainly in New Donk City, it's also here as well.
07:53But overall, I'm just in love with this game.
07:55I put like 30 or 40 minutes into the demos and still was nowhere near seeing all it had to
08:02offer.
08:03There's so many alternative routes and stuff to take.
08:05For example, one of the demos I found in this section, which I didn't find in one of my other
08:10playthroughs, it's a cool kind of area where you throw your hat on these kind of blue things.
08:15They're almost like fan belts, so when you throw the hat in, it speeds it up and directs it towards
08:20these kind of things that trigger explosions.
08:25It's a nice wee touch, especially when you drop down to the second level.
08:29The explosions trigger other explosions, so when I hit this, boomf, that triggers an explosion, but then it hits the
08:38other one above it, and that triggers another explosion, which then hits the next one.
08:43So it basically makes a big kind of chain reaction of explosions, which is a nice wee touch.
08:48I mean, that could be done in any other way without necessarily using that gimmick.
08:53Nintendo could have easily just had those moving platforms with explosions, but it's nice just to see wee touches like
08:58that that make everything feel all kind of connected.
09:02Now there's these odd kind of Easter Island type statues with sunglasses, this is the last thing I'll show you,
09:07and they can put on sunglasses and take them off, and when they put them on, invisible platforms appear, like
09:14so.
09:16Now that lets you see where you can walk to find hidden things.
09:20Now when you put the shades on, they walk really slowly, but when you take them off, they walk quickly,
09:24so you can still walk over bits, as long as you've kind of uncovered them already with the shades, which
09:31is cool.
09:31So a nice wee touch, I think.
09:33It just gives you another example of how detailed, all the possibilities, basically, that are there for possessing people.
09:42But sadly that was it, this is when my last demo ended, just as I crossed the air, but yeah,
09:46so that's Super Mario Odyssey, I'm loving it.
